Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Thank you for being here with us for cabin life, van life and all the in between!

Excited to share the next chapter with you all- Thank you for your support each week 💛 💛 Love from us four! 🐾
Nico💞😍
So what do you mean the end?
Oh, thank GOD! I thought it was the end of the youtube channel and your cabin?
What do you mean, "last week at the cabin". Did I hear that wrong?
Yay! Impressive amount of work y’all have accomplished. You deserve some sun ☀️ and a bit of a rest.
I'm truly amazed HGTV or Netflix haven't offered you guys a deal for the shows. The editing and production is excellent and the content is bang on.
In the beginning I was hoping the guy actually said: "This place is infested with _beer_ "
😂 I thought so too !
Hahahaha
Me too, I thought that was his way of asking for one, lol
Speaking as a 60 year old man, you two impress the heck out of me and yes, inspire me. Thank you for posting these videos. You 4 take care of each other and continue having fun!
I just remembered since the delivery guy said bears, you shold protect your young trees trunks with some wire to prevent it from deer or any other animals... it is a treat for them 🙃
I actually had to look back ... I re-watched the video when you moved in to the cabin. Three months. *3 months* !!! While I was re-watching the move-in video, I was reminded of what the property looked like the day you first drove up. What you all have done in 3 months is simply *unreal* . You are not _really good for people who have never done this_ , you are *really good* by pro standards. And it's not just one thing...it's construction, woodworking, landscaping, laying driveway, roofing, and, and. I know there were missteps but you two are *seriously good* And now... where are you going?? You said next Sunday will be the last week in the cabin. I don't know if I missed something, but I thought you *would be* wintering there. Hmmmm, what's up gals??
I was infested with beers once. Had a terrible hangover the next day! :)
I got my Vessi shoes in the mail yesterday! Bring on the rain NYC - I’m now ready for you! I walk to and from work and basically everywhere in Manhattan and I’m excited to have these on standby now for rainy days!
Amazing! Perfect for those NYC streets! Enjoy them xx thanks for supporting us & our sponsor
Might have been a good idea to run a sacrificial gravel board along the very bottom of the back of the outhouse and will be the one that rots and easily changed instead of each vertical plank rotting at the bottom because of soil and splash back contact from rain. Dig out along the back wall and back fill with gravel to help. Great work though guys!! 💚💚
yes, there are some great ways, and natural ways, of treating wood so it doesn't rot; I was surprised they didn't go down that route given how thorough they've been with everything else. Maybe when they do the finishing they will fix?
👏👏 Your homestead looks wonderful!! Wow your a great couple it's amazing all you've accomplished .
I'm from Maine and our first home was an 85 acres old farm on a big hill, with a small house no insulation . When the wind blew the curtains inside fluttered. We had a small Wood stove and a wood cook stove . We moved in late fall. We put hay bails around the foundation to keep the wind from freezing the pipes. I mention that because there appears to be no skirting around your house.
The floors will be freezing 💞
Another awesome video this week... getting back on a ladder is the hardest part! btw the bird you showed was a nuthatch and not a black capped chickadee... they tend to hang out together but nuthatches tend to go upside down when they forage for insects in the bark! take care!
Wow. A ton of work, and all well done. A couple questions I have been wanting to ask:
1. I see that the cabin is up off the ground without a footing. How is your cabin floor insulated? (hope it is good). Keep in mind that some people get bales of straw and stack them around the bottom of the cabin to block wind and snow from blowing in underneath. Inexpensive, easy to do, very effective.
2. How are you using the water from your well? (never saw the conclusion of that, maybe I missed it). I assume you don't have the power to run a submersible pump down such a deep well.
Glad you have the bird feeders up, that will be a great source of pleasure in the coming months, because.... after all this incredible work... once the snow comes in earnest you are going to have lots more time on your hands. At the very least, indoor projects done during the winter can be done at your own pace, without the time pressure of the seasons. But still, it may be a bit of a shock after the frenzy of fall season work.
Thank you!
Good questions.
1. We plan to insulate under it one day. The floor is freezing LOL.
2. We are not yet. We have to dig a 4 feet trench underground to the cabin to run our water lines so they don’t freeze. We hoped to have it done this year however, we didn’t make it in time due to the winter and ground freezing fast. As well, we need to instal our electrical system before we can run a 240 well pump. This will all happen sometime in 2022.
@@Hhaha888 Thanks, I had missed that... it seemed from some other comments that might be a (very good) plan.
I have been watching your channel since stumbling upon the cabin series. I love your positivity and enthusiasm. Keep it up.
As a man who mills his own lumber from the trees upon my land for many years, I have learned a few tricks that might help you out on any future projects. The outhouse was probably the best type of build for beginners to attempt. Simple, uncomplicated and forgiving. A great way to gain experience.
Fresh cut lumber is cut true to dimension and gradually shrinks as it dries and reaches moisture equilibrium with the ambient air. As such, you need to account for the shrinkage when you are using green lumber. The method I use is to build board and batten as you have done but, instead of nailing each board with two side by side nails, as you have done, only put one nail in each board at each cross-beam nailer. This allows the board to shrink, minimizing splitting. You do the same with the batten by placing that nail in-between the gap of the two boards under it. When the boards have air dried you can go back and add more nails to each board.
The second thing you need know when using green lumber is that it will warp and curl as it dries. The warping is addressed when you nail the boards upon the structure. You compensate for curling by turning each board with the outside edge facing in towards the wall. Boards generally curl outward (the bark side). You can tell by looking at the end of your boards. Look for the growth rings.
Good Luck in your future endeavors. I look forward to seeing what you have planned next. Peace
LOL. You can't rehire your ground helper . . . you and Jazz are stuck like glue for life! : ) Just so impressed by your drive and perseverance. Congrats on yet another great project outcome. Ummmm . . . can I buy you a heated toilet seat for Christmas? Stay strong, be well. Rock On!
You and me baby were stuck like glue 🎵 love it! Haha thank you so so much! Heated toilet seat? Wow I didn’t even know those existed xx
@@Vanwives heated floor as well 😬👍
@@teepeeX go for it, mind you Thats one long walk
Sunday is my favorite day of the week! I have you guys, Eamon and Bec, Kara and Nate as well as Kinging it.....it just makes my week.....thank you for being you!
OK so you two are my favorites AND I'm so excited for all that you're building together and for your lives. You make my day on Sundays. And... because I'm actually a naturalist, someone who makes a living taking people out in nature and helping them connect with the world around them... Aren't those nuthatches? :D And sorta thinking that Bella's squirrel is a chipmunk... sending a field guide!
LOL!
That was a chipmunk not a squirrel. I love both but I definitely know my chipmunks.
Hi you four Girls 🤗
Sunday afternoon in North-Germany, the Coffee is made, time for the Girls in Novascotia ❗It's so great what you have done, it looks all so beautiful, congrats, winter can comes, lots of love and best wishes from Andreas and Balou 🐕 🧡🧡
See you next Sunday xx
You girls give me so much joy, Love the project, and the fact that you guys aren't scared to take on anything. Keep it up and thanks for the smiles and laughs you bring out on this old guy.
Thanks!
Finally the best one coming!! Enjoy winter with your cabin, cuddles and hot tea☕️ 🫖 Happy Sunday!!❤️🔥
Thank you 💛🤗
Happy Sunday!
Pro tip. Keep your lumber on level ground and stacked neatly to prevent warping. Also when cutting materials when possible stand them on end for better cuts and longer blade life. It's looking so good
Always amazing. You realize this 20 minutes on Sunday is the only exercise I get? So never stop. 🥰
Outhouse is Awesome! It’s amazing what y’all have been able to accomplish before winter! I hope it’s time to stay warm and cozy inside with the pups!
Watching you both is the highlight of my Sunday morning! I am so impressed with all your hard work. Thank you for sharing, until next week!💛xo
Thank you Mary xx see you then 🤗🌞
Ladies- my wife and I adore you and the pups so much. Thank you for sharing your journey with us! You said next week is your last week in the cabin. Where are you headed next????
Amazing! Great job ladies
Thank you 💛
Last week at the cabin! Wow!
Love everyone in this chat! You are loved!❤️
Thank you for coming along 💛
tip... line the bed with plastic sheet. then slide the last of the mulch out. no mess or brushing. love the show
I'm always impressed by your teamwork and your willingness to take on projects which you've never done before. I enjoy your videos alot!
By the way, the bird is a nuthatch. I think that your idea to use regular lumber for the outhouse is admirable, but because it's not "treated lumber" all lumber in contact with the ground or snow will rot before its time.....
Ladies, you are inspirational and sensational! I have enjoyed every moment spent with the four of you! I look forward to more posts! I am 78 years young living in Ohio USA. I am a retired teacher and I appreciate your " zest for life!" God bless!
Thank you for sharing your adventures with us , you have done an awesome transformation of what use to be there.
The cabin , the landscaping , the outhouse , just everything is looking absolutely fantastic , really happy for you guys.
Those fruit trees will be bearing some good energy and vitamins for you , Bella & Izzy look really happy and content.
Be well .. keep smiling .. catch ya on the flip side .. Cheers.
Thank you so so much for coming along on the cabin series. 💛💛
Love you girls, be safe, and prayers from TEXAS Bear... keep posting vids, we love em!
The joy you two express and share each week is exhausting. And that’s standing still! Then you start to work. Phew! So fun to watch as you make your lovely property and your dreams come true. Love you guys, from Ottawa 👵🏼😘
The transformation on your property is absolutely mind blowing.
Omg! I can totally relate to how scared Crystle felt trying to come down. I have no problem going up on the roof but coming down is terrifying to me. It’s a very scary feeling. Glad you conquered it!
Seriously, a Jackery ad? I LOVE my Jackery. Thanks to you, I bought it last Spring. Thanks!!!
You two are amazing. Thanks for the effort in sharing the vlog. Loved watching the build. Bella is beautiful.
Thank you! 💛🐾
don’t forget to trim the wood up away from the dirt at the bottom, it will help to keep the boards from rotting
I look forward to a Sunday morning video from you guys. Thank you for sharing your journey with all of us 💖💖💖
What a CHARMING homestead!
😊❤️🇨🇦🎶
Look at all the work you did in a really short time! You two are incredible! Can’t wait for what’s coming;) If I had to guess, I’d say you’re about to hit the road southbound! ;)
YOU GIRLS ARE GREAT, WAY TO GO. GOOD LUCK AND HAVE A GREAT DAY.
The Dogs are lovely the outhouse looks great. Any heating going in there? Freezing butts! 🥶 when you said the End I rushed to RUclips and it wasn’t what I was thinking phew. Looking good ladies much love from London UK ❤️
Thank you! Not this year. But down the line perhaps. 💛
C'mon down to San Diego. I've got a few projects that you can help me with, and the weather is good! 😉
Four paws up for all the great work you did this year, and take care. 🐾 🐾
The energy u both have during a most tiresome moment in a project is so inspiring. You both balance each other out so well in bringing out the confidence, encouragement n "you can do it" attitude is just so wonderful to see. Thanks ladies!
Another wonderful video. I enjoy them a lot! But one thing the bird you described showed in the video is a Nuthatch, not a black capped chickadee. You can tell Nuthatches not only by coloring but also by what they do. They land on tree trunks and then go down the tree looking for insects. They invariably go down the tree. Thanks!
What a transformation! You've done amazingly well! Love how positive you are and how kind you are to the doggies. 👍😎🇨🇦📷🐾💜🐾🌲🔥
You girls have done more in 6 months than i have in years on my farm. Feel proud as you so did it to the fullest. Im Proud of you.
I am so impressed with your designs. I recognize your stupendous efforts, compassions, and enthusiasms. Thank you for the inspiration. Much love to you both~ P.S. Once you use a two-wheeled wheelbarrow, you’ll never go back to the single! So much more stable, and easier to catch some air with a full load! Have fun, y’all. May you remain warm and safe this winter. 🎶👏🌹🏵🤟🎁🙏🔥
much admiration for you two and love your doggies. Confused as to why you aren't staying in the cabin now that you have everything closed up well.
It's been fun to watch the amazing transformation of the land around the cabin and the cabin itself. You two amazing ladies have done some great work for novices and I mean that in a great way. It shows a lot of determination and willingness to take it on yourselves. There are lots of people who would never undertake some of the work you have done. Looking forward to the next chapter.
You guys suggesting a multi tool like waaayyy back at some point is what inspired me to buy my own, and you are 100% correct - it has been insanely useful for my van build lol
You two just SOOOO ROCK!!! I just totally admire your hard work and willingness to do it all yourself as much as possible! But what I LOVE, most of all, is you guys including your Aussies in the vids as much as you do. I love Aussies SOOOO MUCH! I had my Aussie, Hannah, for 12 1/2 yrs, and she was the absolute best friend (and partner) anyone could hope for. It bas been 2 yrs since she had to leave me, and I still miss her so much. Please keep including the doggos!
I just them these 4. Are beautiful
I cannot believe what you two have accomplished in such a relatively short period of time.
Your property looks amazing! Way to go!
So this is the end, but I hope we'll see more of you in the future. You girls have done so much good for not only yourselves, but for the area you live in, I wish I could give you both a Big hug and say thanks for all you do. You've learned a lot and had fun doing it. I love you guys, best of luck and be careful out there, never take any unnecessary chances. Most of all take good care of yourselves.
Of course! Every Sunday. We love posting videos xx the end of cabin life for a bit. See you next Sunday xx

Those RV collapsible ladders are my least favorite.. The plastic retainer clips fall off and it collapses when you least expect. I watch with worry each time you use it. Very impressive achievements at the cabin.
You got a lot of loose ends tied up, congratulations on your hard work, what a transformation from when you first pulled up! You guys are amazing!!! See you next week for the going away party, kinda confused 🤔☮️❤️
You ladies did a fine job. Lots of projects completed well lots of time and money invested. I'm impressed by your dedication. Now, get snowshoes, xc skis and ice skates! Some good books. Stay safe.
Love the outhouse ladies!

I've been totally impressed with your attitudes and energy throughout this whole series of ramping up your property and cabin. Kudos to the both of you!
I love you both so much ☺️ sorry the four of you
Look what you two have accomplished‼️ all of that hard work has paid off and you are physically fit, strong and confident👏👏👍 l look forward to the next adventure!
I love watching all your progress with seasonal projects. A project for every season. You girls have a great life!
It is such good fun watching the way you interact with each other.
Your interaction with the canine members of the family is also a joy!👍👏
Your website is one of the very few which gets the audio at a decent level. The aerial photography is simple and expertly executed. Also you plan time well so that we see the different projects advancing bit by bit across a very wide front at any given time. Where did you both learn such efficiency and clever editing?
The brain is the biggest 'muscle' humans have and when 2 minds think alike the result is to be celebrated.
Hey girls, I hope you guys are doing good! I hope the dogs are good and everyone ie well! I love your videos 💙

I'm surprised you didn't put a barn door on the closet., where the top half can be opened independently of the lower half. How nice to look out. Believe me; one of my family had one attached to the back of their house overlooking the garden. I am impressed with the progress you are making, not surprised because women are as good as any guy at most things. Can't wait to see what is next.
You ladies are amazing ! Your enthusiasm is great to see . Love all of your projects
Glad you have decided to become Bluenosers. Let's hope for a mild winter.

Your property would be so cute in the spring with daffodils and tulips. Now is the time to plant bulbs. Love your vids!! 👍❤️🥰
Great overview of what you have accomplished thus far. Amazing work!
Thank you xx
Hey Vanwives pack!
Awesome work. Just stated watching all your back catalogue, as I’m a new subscriber. Brilliant work in this one. I live in an off grid 50 year old converted sheep shearing shed on in Koonya on the Tasman Peninsula, Tasmania, Australia. It too is “Board and Batten”, however, here in Tas, we refer to is a “Vertical Board”. Yes, it looks great! All my outbuildings are constructed similarly.
Great to see the pups! I live here with my gorgeous 11 yo (her Birthday is tomorrow!) Australian Blue Heeler cattle dog, “Lulu” & without a doubt, she’s my pack also.
Looking forward to seeing all the other videos. They’re so good to watch, amazing energy, lots of laughs. Keep it up.
Go well.

P.s. Wish I could show you pics of this amazing home, and my best mate, Lulu.
Hey Vanwives!!
I was so worried about you guys this winter knowing how bad it could be up there. It seems as though you are addressing the important aspects of survival. I have chills just thinking about it. Can't wait to see what's next. Stay safe my lovies.
Hey Mad! Thanks for caring 💛 see you soon xx
So glad you will be indoors from now on, it looked so cold. Your home is so cosy now with the fire and the fixed chimney.
You two are doing just a terrific job! Amazing amount of work, and so enjoyable to watch! Can’t wait to see what’s next!
Thank you 🤗
The outhouse looks really great! Don’t cry to much because you finished all the roofing😝😝. Can’t wait to see what your winter projects are. Sending lots of love to you and Bella & Ozzie❤️❤️❤️❤️
Outstanding!! B-e-l-l-a for the win!
I just lost my 9yr old ride or die pup and seeing Bella 'supervise' brought all the feels, Dakota would have sat right there the whole time if I was on that roof💔💔💔
So are you onto the interior work or heading to warmer weather🥰
You are Amazing@ And such an inspiration! I love how you speed up the work videos and get so many projects in every week! No more roofing!!! Excited about your winter adventures!
Everything looks amazing 😍😍. I have learned so many tips and tricks of building from you both!
Ocian! Happy we can share some knowledge xx thanks 💛🤗
The out house looks terrific gals. Loved Bella standing guard over Chippy!! She’s too cute. It’s always been a thought that runs through my mind as to what type of wildlife you have in your area. I lived in Kodiak, Alaska for six years. We had a 25x25 foot cabin with a loft built from logs milled off the property, I just loved it. Kodiak has the largest bears in the world and they aren’t always your typical Yogi and Booboo friendly so we were always “bear aware”. We never went anywhere on the property without some type of protection you two cookies are pretty sharp so I’m sure you’ve come up with a plan to protect yourself if the need should ever arise. I’m looking forward to see what you’re going to do with the inside of the cabin.
Incredibly phenomenal work. So inspiring, your work ethics unreal. So proud of you ladies and happy to be getting to join you along your journey.
Thank you Erika xx

Hi girls. Im not an canadian roofs but in my Country we put these rubber chimney protection under metal roof sheets. There is better/flat contact with roof. I hope that there wont be any leaks. Great job girls
Bears??!!🐻 Yikes!!. When the snow comes you'll be able to see footprints of all the critters that ars passing by at night. You two have accomplished an amazing amout of improvements to the yard of your cabin. Can't wait to see what your next chapter is going to be.
Bears don't stay out in the winter, plus ,most other animals stay in the swamp for the winter only , wolves , cayotes and deer move around in the winter .
@@Canuckgirl152Some Alaska bears don’t sleep/hibernate all winter long. 😬
@@tlemnartist lol they are in NS not Alaska tho
@@Canuckgirl152 haha I am aware of that. Thanks
@@Canuckgirl152 I didn't say winter. I said when it snows. I know bears hibernate in the winter but it will snow a few times before they go into hibernation. I assume they hibernate during the worst of winter. Any way it's fun to see tracks in the snow and see what the different critters are that wander around. I live in the country and animals pass through my yard to get from the woods to the creek.
Ah awesomesauce new project - I'd not long mentioned the garden domes to the gents too (Tyler & Todd). How exciting for you both!
I never knew that the wood was shorter at a DIY store, you just take it that the measurements are true. Are you goi g to have light in your toilet in case you need to go at nighttime. Thanks for the information. Your place is looking awesome, fantastic work ladies. Are you not staying in the cabin throughout the winter? Will it be too cold to stay? I live in the UK so I’m not sure how cold it gets in Canada in winter.
It can get below -40 Celsius in our winters 🥶
Wood at stores used to be true to size, but then they started cutting corners.
@@MiriamLove366 actually no corners are cut. The stated size in store is the size PRE planing. The lumber sold in store unless stated as rough cut will be planed.
@@scientifically_sarah oh no, way too cold.🥶🥶
Thanks Carolyn! It can be tricky. A light for sure. Not this year as we ran out of time to beat this winter. But we will not be spending this winter at the cabin. Moving onto new things 🤗
