- Today, I’m doing “Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding,” the opening track on Elton John’s iconic 1973 album, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. This song is Elton’s masterpiece. It’s perfection wrapped in more perfection. Each transition, each sound, each instrument has a purpose. It really shows the genius of Elton, his band, and the producer Gus Dudgeon. This song was popular on FM radio in the early ‘70s, as it was before FM became like AM radio with just three-minute pop ditties. The two songs (Funeral For A Friend and Love Lies Bleeding) were written separately but recorded together to create one gigantic song. The runtime of the original version is over 11 minutes, but since I shortened the synthesizer intro here, it is a bit shorter. The synthesizer intro I used was a snippet I clipped out from the One Night Only concert in 2000.
Elton has used this track as the opening number on numerous tours. However, for the times that it was not used as an opener, it was placed in the middle of the setlist, which is what Elton has done for the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.
This song is challenging. It is one of the most complex songs I know. While it’s not hard to play, it’s difficult to play it right because it is really, really long. I hope you can still enjoy my performance of it, despite the few mistakes here and there! ;)

Can't lie... Ended up here by accident but I randomly happen to be a huge EJ fan. Prob seen him 15x. Anyone who is a fan has to love this video. This guy plays with incredible conviction. I'm not a piano player at all, but his left thumb smashing down at the beginning is the key.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm really glad you enjoyed it and flattered that you think my playing is accurate to Elton's play-style! Be sure to hit subscribe if you haven't already! ;)
Fantastic.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice uplifting version of this song, Reminds me of Elton's opening song during his 1980 Live in Central Park Concert. He was really at the top of his game in that video.
Thank you! Really appreciate that! Hit subscribe if you haven't already! 😉
Nice to hear EJ songs with only a piano. Very good. Do more! I’m envious!
Thanks! Super glad you enjoyed the performance! 😉
I like the camera angle. Just like his live performances.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! And hit subscribe if you haven't already! ;)
Exellent!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
This is absolutely incredibly well done. You included the "funeral procession" beats with your left thumb at the beginning. Most everyone forgets that. You've got them! And then in "Love Lies Bleeding" you included all of the trills. You did such an amazing job performing this piece. Well done. You have such amazing talent. It's jaw dropping. Thank you for sharing your talent!
Thanks! This means a lot! I actually perform this a bit better now, so I plan to post a new version at some point!
I’m looking forward to listening to it! I subscribed to your channel. Thank you, again!
Simply spectacular!
Thanks! I'm probably going to redo this one at some point too, so stay on the lookout for that!
are you kidding me??? THIS IS SO AWESOME!!!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video! Hit subscribe if you haven't already! ;)
My dearest friend, this is the most fantastic syntesis of the best Elton John ' s piano playing ever heard!!!!! Thank you very much!!!!!!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the performance! ;)
Brilliant song and performance. Excellent.
Thank you! Really glad you enjoyed it! 😉
Seriously good job, sir!
Thank you! I plan to rerecord this at some point, because I can play it even better now (more in time and just overall better), so stay tuned for that!
Ya this is really good.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
How do I give this more likes???? Right up there with the Man Himself XXX
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! ;)
Favorite Elton song. Sounds majestic the way you played it!
Thank you so much for the kind words! Glad you enjoyed!
MERCI pour ces harmonies supplémentaires ! le sens du rythme ! bravo!!!
Damn man you set those keys on fire!!! Awesome cover.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! 😉
Really appreciate that this is just the piano accompaniment from the song instead of the melodies. Been trying to find it so I can learn it
Thanks! Glad you like it. And I agree-I do rhythm covers for this reason! I find that so many people try to play chords in the left hand and play the melody in the right hand, and I know that's how the sheet music usually has this stuff, but it's just damn' wrong! It sounds lopsided and whacky, and totally not how the artist plays it.
The piano is the melody.
Amazing!!!!
Thanks! I plan on redoing this cover at some point, so stay tuned! ;)
Exquisite. Really!
Thanks! Super glad you enjoyed it! ;)
AWESOME! best version I have heard, bravo!!!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Hit subscribe if you haven't already! ;)
you made it yours. i play this song like the sheet music says. you play beyond esr you play instinct attitude, i dont know but it rocks. no bocals needed. sit never thought i would say that. ej voice the whole point i thought.
Thank you! That's a really nice compliment! I'm really glad you enjoyed it! Subscribe if you haven't already! ;)
I throughly enjoyed this

That was f'ing cool.
Thank you! I appreciate that!
So you've been practicing all I can say is well done 👍👍
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
You're absolutely brilliant! So much like his piano keys it's unreal!! I'm learning Bennie and the jets at the moment myself
Thank you! I recently re-did my cover of that song here: ruclips.net/video/XAQv4N3fhso/видео.html
Nice...very nice!
Thanks! Super glad you enjoyed it!

absolutely beutiful
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Be sure to hit subscribe if you haven't already! ;)
How did you manage to get your piano to sound so similar to Eltons?
It sounds spectacular!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! I use SoundFonts sampled from the exact MIDI modules Elton uses live. I layer a SoundFont of the Roland MKS-20 with a sample of the Yamaha PowerGrand, leveled and EQed as close to Elton's sound as possible! Hope this helps! ;)
Very nice work while cleaning my kitchen!! Thanks
Any Prelude / Angry young man by Joel??
Thanks! I covered the song almost three years ago, but here’s a new and improved version that I just uploaded today: ruclips.net/video/8Q_t2PJnNbQ/видео.html
Bravo!

Woooow 👌🏻😳😍
Thanks so much for watching! Please subscribe if you haven't already! 😉
Amazing stuff!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed! 😉
This is great. Did you work out the notes yourself or is there actually a written version of what you are playing?
Thank you! I appreciate that. I'm not a traditional player, so I learn by a combination of things. This is the product of my eyes and ears studying many live versions, cover versions, and looking at existing chord sheets. While many of those chord sheets are mostly wrong, I use them only sometimes as a sort of "guide." This was a good solo cover I found that I used to picked up some things I missed: ruclips.net/video/1dClyWBza2E/видео.html. I also found the soundboard of "Funeral For A Friend / Tonight" with Ray Cooper from a live show in 2009 useful: ruclips.net/video/Hz7RJhUio9c/видео.html

I do the same thing. Most lead sheets are terrible, using I chord instead of a vi is really common, but it gives you a place to start. I have Elton song books, but it’s too tedious to read music for me.
@@KyleCourounis another good cover that actually includes LLB

Dude, I havent had that much fun a long time. I was looking for someone to do that so i could go along with the guitar part, ALL of it. I always play all the parts on guitar. it was cool jus to focus on the one part. , I'll make a vid on the downlow. Do you live around KC?
I play piano (not this well) and I do live around KC
Glad to hear you found the video fun and enjoyable! I don't live around KC. Hit subscribe if you haven't already! ;)
You can still collab even if not in same area
Where is your vid? You could collab with Tommy.
Amazing cover! You are incredibly talented 🤩🤩 If you don't mind me asking, how long have you been playing and do you mainly play by ear?
Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I've been playing for about 9 years now and play by a combination of my ear and chord sheets. Hit subscribe if you haven't already! ;)
Awesome work!! Do you do Midis?
Thanks! I don't usually make MIDI files of what I play and not for any particular reason. I might in the future, but it's doubtful I will. Sorry!
I really hope you do! Because this was beautiful and I wanna try and play like it lol
@@BenjiDarius If you're really determined, maybe you want to give it a try by ear! My ear isn't perfect by any stretch, but I can figure a lot of stuff out. It's so much fun to be able to learn things without relying on a MIDI file or sheet music (because I can't read it for shit 😂). I may cover this song again at some point (I'm not happy with how fast I played in some parts), so if I remember, I can record a MIDI then! Thanks again for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed it so much you want to play like it!
@@KyleCourounis I agree, it would he nice to learn by ear, but it takes forever soo. I also noticed you speeding up at some parts, but that's probably because you got excited at your favorite part. I'm currently trying to learn this from Limecovers since he has a top view. But nice work! How long did it take for you to learn? And which performance was your inspiration for this?
Also sorry for the late reply, I also wonder if you were inspired by Still Dre at 1:40
Do you have sheet music for this version?
No, I don't read sheet music. Sorry!
this is amazing! sheet music or by ear??
Thank you! It's pretty much by ear! ;)
Electric piano?
I use MainStage to layer SoundFonts of the exact sound modules Elton John uses live-a Roland MKS-20 and a Yamaha MOTIF rack with the PowerGrand preset.
Is that a kawai VPC1?
Yep! Indeed it is! ;)
Not bad, tempo little fast and heavy on the left hand thumb.
Yeah, I'm aware. I plan to redo a lot of my early covers at some point, possibly over the next month when I'm home more. I play it at a better tempo now! Stay tuned!
Awesome, but a terrible camera angle
It's meant to look like Elton's piano camera that is hooked and angled on the side of his piano, but in this particular video, it is far too sideways. I've played around with other angles on more recent videos. I plan on redoing this cover at some point for several reasons, but for now, this'll have to do.
