I've been in love with this song since the first time I heard it, and I think it is the ULTIMATE concert opener for Elton. In fact, I had only ever heard various live renditions of it for at least three or four years before I finally bought a copy of the GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD album and heard the original recording. For me, this is a song that will always be better live.
It was the perfect melding of the talent in Elton's original band....Davey Johnstone's guitar work is stellar....I call him the "Goldilocks Guitarist" because his playing is never too much or too little...it's just always the PERFECT compliment to Elton's writing and piano playing. There were plenty of opportunities for Dee Murray to open up with his very melodic style of bass playing, and the legendary Nigel Olsson delivers like usual with his brilliantly understated drum work, holding it all together like glue.
I LOVE that band, and feel all kinds of delight whenever I hear recordings of them playing together from the 70's OR their 3 years back together in the 80's....together they were, in my opinion, "The Elton John Sound".
Anyway....amazing tune, and without a doubt one of the most fun to play of anything I've ever learned.
