This is my rendition of Elton John's "Funeral For A Friend" using only an iPad 2, Axiom MIDI controller and my piano. I wanted to see if it was possible to recreate as closely as possible the intro to FFaF using just the iPad, and this is what eventually came of that. While not absolutely perfect, I think it gets the point across! :) BTW, NO sampling or recorded waveforms were used here - it's all synthesizer programming like the old days!
The synth apps used are:
Beepstreet Sunrizer (wind effect)
Moog AniMoog (howling sounds)
Arturia iMini (Bell)
Arturia iSEM (Main Brass-synth sound)
Bismark BS-16i (Strings, additional brass sound)
Baldwin L1 piano (real!)
Thanks for watching/listening!
How does this video not have millions of hits? Your a one man band!
Thank you, what a nice compliment!
Elton would be proud.... you rocked a great piece of history
OMG!! It's not often I comment on RUclips but this was phenomenal. Absolute genius. :)
wow...there is no other BAND on you tube that even comes close to those right on synth sounds. That's a 10! I did a complete recording of it myself in 1992, bad guitar and all, but lost all the miidi but the pretty poorly mixed mp3 made from my 8 track cassette tascam. Love to send it to you for a chuckle from a real musician like you
Your piano forte is still the best I've seen nailing the original. So many others just hammering the keys. But you're nailing it,
Bill you did this tune justice. Great job. I know you play it with passion. I can tell you really took the time to learn it and feel it. Awesome.
+Dave Rosado Hi Dave, and thank you so much for the kind words! Elton is very special to me, he really was my most influential piano "teacher" when I was growing up. Through learning his music I eventually branched out and became a real musician. Forever grateful to him for that.
Wow! Great job, man! Are you the Wizard of Oz?! Only people with a huge love for a song can do it with this perfection and detail!
AAAAAMazing! Great job!!
FYI, I have been to at least 15 Elton John concerts over the years, shook his hand twice, have every printed tour book and own one of the largest EJ Soundboard Recording collections I know of. To say the least, I am a fan too!
This is the second time I’ve come across this randomly. The first time was several years ago it was amazing then, and it’s amazing now. Great work buddy, keep it up!
Awesome!! Amazing!! Very well done!! You nailed it!! Thankyou...
Singing “The roses in the window box have tilted to one side, everything about this house was born to grow and die, you’re a bluebird on a telegraph line I hope you’re happy now....for the winds of change are coming down your way girl.............- THE best rock song of EJ. Nice job on the synth. I wish I was your next door neighbour, we could take this to the masses!
The cold bumps on my arms are receding now...Yes it made me go cold. The opening with the synthesizer
was just out of this world, never seen anything like it outside an Elton John concert. You Are Amazing...
My god. That was fantastic!!! I wish I could play that well.
WTF!! AMAZING! What a great job you did. I am so jealous! Loved it. Thank you for you efforts. Really enjoyed it.
Well done Bill! That is truly an epic piece! What I love about Elton’s piano playing is that it has great power and commitment with unique progressions. This is not your average song to cover, but you did it well.
Very inspirational- I've been wondering how one person could pull off the synth and piano simultaneously. You've given me hope! Great job!
WOW!!! OMG!!! That was Excellent Bill, I could not stop watching, it was amazing♪ You did Sir Elton proud for sure..... Two Thumbs Waaay Up for Bill Vincent...…. LM
WELL THAT JUST BLEW MY MIND! AWESOME JOB YOUNG MAN! THANKS FOR THE SHARE.
This is absolutely phenomenal. No understatement. Mind boggling. Wow
Incredible. Congratulations! Really inspiring.
First real post on youtube in 15 years so be proud because you are impressive my friend
Hey Bill
Amazing rendition of one of my favourite Elton John classics.
Great programing and attention to detail .
Thanx 4 sharing
Pure Genius using the app for the vintage synth tones !! I enjoyed it very much .
I'd love to hear you try multitracking the synth and piano and add sampled guitar and bass parts. Well done man.
Wow... awesome... Elton must see that one!!! Great! Big congrats :) Keep it up!
unbelievable good... the emotion and passion that you put into this music moves my soul
Hi Bill. I can see that you have put an enormous amount of work into this. I've just acquired the Blu-ray 5.1 version of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and it inspired me to look for a tutorial on this track. It's a gift that keeps on giving, thanks very much!
Very inspiring! Thanks for recording this.
Excellent job :) Keep it up! Great sounds and performance
From one piano player to another this is incredible. Way to go
Beautiful.
Beautiful, thanks for the upload. This being one of my favourite Elton John songs, I enjoyed hearing the intro and the piano part. Definitely made my night. :)
Bravo! If I'd only heard the music and not seen the video I would have thought there were several people playing in collaboration. Excellent. Technically challenging, and you also catch the essence of this piece.
DUDE you are a freak! and I mean that in the best way that was brilliant I wish I had half your talent.
Robby, thank you!
This is amazing!!!! Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Dying is my favorite Elton John song because of the amazing piano part!! Thanks for bringing it to life so awesomely!!
Wow man, that was great. You can feel the passion
Excellent job. That’s by far the closest sound to the original I have heard.
Great playing. What nice pianos you have.
That was fantastic! You did a great job, on a great tune, from that great album "Yellow Brick Road"
You sound amazing, man. Very good! Thanks
tu est tres impressionnant you are very good
Wow!!!!! You just surprised the hell out of me! Excellent playing!
Bill, that was great! Ok. Bernie wrote it. Elton and the band play and sing it. Do y’all think that Elton does most of the arrangements? Aside from the sound board engineer putting all the pieces together?
OMG mindblowing, so good man... Amazing
What is really cool is you did an excellent job recreating all the synthesizer parts live using an inexpensive iPad and midi controller, whereas for the last 47 years, though the song has been a staple of Elton’s live shows, for the most part, they have just used a recording for the synthesizer intro. (I think there have been exception.)
All sorts of feels my brother! I'm playing Nigel's part right along with you!!! Bravo!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic, Enormous Job, Master !!! Congrats !!!
Awesome! Must have watched this four times😅
Very beautifully played; I clearly hear your devotion (awe?) to the GBYBR original in your performance.
I never had a Baldwin, baby grand or otherwise, but I invested in a Yamaha console when I left the nest (1988) and still use it.
My grandfather was a Master Piano tuner and back in the 70s said Yamaha were the best in terms of technical specs and tone.
I'm blessed to be old enough to remember that album's release and those two tracks remain my favourites of Sir Elton's et al anthology.
N.B. I always envied guys with that Arp beast but to be honest I'm not sure I could have been so proficient with the three oscillators, patch sliders and on-board sequencers required to lay down the foundation in FFaF.
♥ Thank you!
Very well done, Sir ! Congratulations !
Great job!!! I love Elton John!!! My dad got me into him when I was little. This is one of my favorite songs by him. You did an awesome job. I've always wanted to play the piano. Keep up the good work!!
Bill! Just came across your amazing rendition of Funeral For A Friend. I taught myself how to play piano by listening to Elton. I used to do a version of this song many years ago. I have completely forgotten how to play it now, but when I saw what an amazing version you did of this masterpiece i am considering re learning how to play it again. LOL
One of the best on RUclips good job!
Beautiful! Loved it.
Extremely good job.Well done sir.
Such a beautiful job playing my favorite song!
Hah, let's see Jordan Rudess do that on an iPad :-)
(Dream Theater has a cover of this on a live album)
Nicely done.
Enjoyed this immensely, keep up the good work.

Great job!
i've been seeing this video daily for like 2 weeks
This is absolutely amazing! Thank you for this!
Absolutely stunning
Well Done I'm jealous your technique is perfect but you also have the feeling too
Thank you Bill!
question: all those synth apps run standalone??? or do you use some DAW or something???
your job is perfect and very very accurate in intense moments when you pitch the IPad
thanks and greetings
Hi, and thank you! Yes, all the apps run standalone, together on the iPad. No DAW was used, no other sounds (other than the real piano, of course) were used. All of it is from the iPad. See above description for list of apps/sounds.
YOU VERY WELCOME BILL . KEEP GOING.
Just fantastic!
You got my vote!
That was really well done. Nice job. Sounds almost the same. I love this song
Very nice indeed. Thank you!
What a workout , sounded EXCELLENT
Great Job with it , I got to figure out the Bass on it . Always been a favorite song . Dee Murray awsome bass player , my same Initials D M
I could hear where all of Davey Johnstone's guitar work would be layered in as I was listening. Great stuff. Easily one of my favorite intros of all time. Thanks for breaking it down for us!
Me too.
That was so awesome
THAT WAS AWESOME!
Bill you've just blown me away 😊
Absolutely brilliant!
Fantastic job ! You really nailed it, and put your own sound into it too. Am working on this one too, you are an inspiration dude !
Awesome . . .
The I pad sounded digital at first then at 1:56 it sounded analog until it faded out. In the 70's when he played Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding live he used play back for the synth part because the ARP2500 would have took along time to set up, then carrying around the world etc. These days Kim Bullard uses 2 keyboards to play it.
That's AWESOME, man!! Excellent!! ✌😃
Great job, this was epic
Magic
wow.....just wow!!!
Loved it👍👍👍
Incredible, this was amazing man. Congratulations. You should Make a tutorial of this song, my favourite by far.
Manusilva14 thank you for checking it out!
