Zoro: 'I WILL NEVER LOSE AGAIN!!' This is for sure one of the first moments in the story that not only made me fall in love with the one piece manga, but especially with Zoro as a character. Zoro vs Mihawk is without any doubt the first fight in the series that has a seriously shocking and impactful vibe in the series and sets up the overarching character arc for Zoro. This includes Zoro being trained by Mihawk and slowly coming closer to his level. The way Zoro accepts his defeat in this scene is epic and one of the best zoro moments. The scene is especially good at dialogue and we will be looking at all narrative elements in depth here. Oh, and also: Zoro Declares His Loyalty to Luffy.

    1. Luffy climbing the mountain while carrying Nami and Sanji showing the determination to save those he cares about and put them before himself.

Zoro is one of my favorite characters too because personally I love his undisputed values. There are Strawhats like Nami, Chopper, Robin, and Sanji who go through a lot of internal conflict wanting to protect many things and not being sure what they should prioritize. I'm not saying that they're any lesser because they go through tough times, but i've always found it really cool that Zoro knows what needs to be done in any situation. The man knows what he wants and he acts upon it. This is most prevalent I feel in his absolute loyalty for Luffy, but he's also shown to have clear boundaries. Like in that scene from the Water 7 arc where Zoro says Ussop can't be let back into the crew until he apologizes for disrespecting the captain. So he's basically saying, he won't follow a captain who can't even demand respect from his own. Again, Zoro is one of the, if not the most loyal Strawhat, but he has his set standards and keeps Luffy in check. I wouldn't mind seeing him go through a moral dilemma and overcoming it later in the story, but overall, his ride or die personality is just what really sold me into liking him so much (lmao, I just realized how much I'm rambling, I'll stop).

I don't know if this counts for any of your particular series, but I think it's a neat detail to discuss:
The Sabaody Arc predicted the Wano Arc's, specifically the alliences and some of the fate of the Captain Supernovas.
Luffy, Law and Kid stand together against an oppressive force before going their own way, but not holding any grudges against each other. Only respect.
Urouge would initially be encountering the major antagonist (in Sabaody it's Kizaru when in Wano is Kaido), but he's injured by something else and has no further involvement.
Bonney and Capone are doing their own thing.
X Drake, Hawkins and Scratchmen all get defeated pretty easily and are left at the complete mercy of the oppressive force, even though initially they were attempting to fight back.
By this time, Blackbeard had no involvement in the matter.

Man I love Zoro. While I personally think that he’s tied with Luffy for best straw hat, there is no doubt that he’s an incredible character.
I think this scene is the turning point for Zoro. We first hear it in Alabasta, but *this* is where Zoro’s loyalty is cemented. Which I mean- his loyalty is probably my favorite aspect of his character. I think that, much in the same way as Ace (well not anymore) and Sabo, Zoro is someone that Luffy can trust fully with the safety of friends. Zoro’s promise not to lose is something that I think Luffy holds onto pretty tightly. Sort of like how Ace’s promise not to die is the only thing that made Luffy stop crying after Sabo ‘died’. After WCI I think that Sanji will absolutely be this as well, but he had his blood family holding him back before.
I’m probably rambling, but I just personally believe that Luffy’s trauma and fear is largely overlooked. Luffy’s biggest fear is being alone. It’s the reason he chased after Ace, it’s the reason he needs Ace to promise not to leave him in order for him to move on. You can even see it when he meets Sabo again, when he breaks down and blames himself for losing Ace. Sabo, Ace (RIP), and maybe Shanks are the only people he would ever admit that to.

My favorite moment is when the crew read the newspaper and know about the war, Luffy and Ace. I dont cry for Ace, I like Ace more for kid and his end (die young but happy), but I and don't just know, hear and what some of Luffy or the crew... I live the crew being born, their friendship, their journey, adventures, laughts and cries and I became a part of them. And Luffy of course, the captain and the one who make all, who battle in first line, who inspires all...
That is why I can feel when they read about the war, when Luffy needs help to rescue his brother... who die in front of him. The crew (or not all) doesn't have a big bound to Ace, but they KNOW the pain of lose someone and they was loosing the time while his loved captain was alone, when he needs help... and now was suffering in body, mind, heart and moral... and their useless crew can't just GO and give him a shoulder to cry. They failed to Luffy.
I don't say I blame them, I don't, but I know they would feel blame. Even if they don't have it, I can feel and understand why for all the story I watch and LIVE with them. And the desperate energy to find a way to go out of that stupid island and find their captain.
And something more I have to say, that makes greates all from Amazon Lily to Marinerfod and when Luffy wakes up. All of that was an expression of how Luffy can make much goals, but he can't do anything. From Amazon Lily he says that Franky could construct a ship (and he makes a bad balsa), with Nami and the crew they could think in a plan to go in Impel Down and rescue Ace in a 100%, and Luffy needs an emotional support or something at the end of the war, a help that Jinbe could give him for lucky. And understand than he can't do all, the people die and he needs to remember and value what he still have: his crew. All of this only makes Luffy and the crew even greater, because they are imperfect and always need help, they can make big things but only together and thats why they could get this far.

The moment Zoro declared he would never lose and asked Luffy if there was any problems with that referring to Luffy as Pirate King was the moment Zoro truly recognised that both he and Luffy had a long way to go. From the very start I think Zoro has thought as Luffy as the Pirate King and vice versa Luffy see's Zoro as the best swordsman in the world.
The any problems with that line I always interpretated as 'I'm not going to lose and neither are you okay?'

  • @justad00d76
    @justad00d76 3 года назад +67

I've been wondering if fujitora "blinding himself" has any relevance to swordsmanship. I mean Oda does like to reference seldom known pirate themes, and there's one interesting piece of trivia about pirates that this could be a reference to.
Contrary to popular belief, pirates used to wear eye patches NOT because of missing eyes (though the canon men often had to be wary of those kinds of injuries) -- they wore eyepatches to adjust that eye to be able to see in pitch-black darkness, so that once it was removed, they could see with clear vision below deck, or through the night during raids, or while watching from a crows' nest. There were many benefits to making sure one eye was always ready to see in the dark, and switching between which eye was covered was a clever way to maximize vision. I'm wondering if Zoro, Rayleigh, and Fujitora having their scarred eyes is supposed to be in reference to WILLFULLY closing one's eyes in order to achieve a greater sense of vision? It also begs the question, Why are Dracule Mihawk's eyes so uniquely designed? We do not know much about him, and we see no scars on his eyes, but why are unique eyes so common among these strong swordsmen? we see Vista and Whitebeard and Roger without these scars, but still with strong swordsmanship, (and White beard DOES at least have an eye color similar to Hawkeye's) but Rayleigh and Zoro, who are meant to be parallel firstmates to their respective pirate kings, aren't the only case of this. We also see that Shanks who received his scar from Blackbeard, Fujitora, and even Cracker, who is said to be an elite swordsman all happen to have scars on one or both of their eyes. It's an odd coincidence, to say the least, but perhaps eventually it will be revealed to heighten one's reliance and sensitivity to Sensory Haki, or somehow be helpful. What I'm trying to suggest is that perhaps wounds on the eye, for some reason or other, perhaps advance one's abilities in swordsmanship, and maybe the correlation isn't "the best swordsmen cut their eyes because it helps," but "people with cut eyes gain something that make them closer to the best swordsman". Perhaps Fujitora willfully closed both eyes out of desire to tap into more sensory powers, since his DF ability can't rely as much on sight as on sensory Haki anyway. What do you guys think?

11:19 Since you mentioned Yoru as signifier of his religious motif:
The _asymmetric_ design of his sword is the one thing that I don't love about Mihawk.
If there's any swordsman in One Piece that would have been a perfect candidate for an iconic European double-edged sword, it'd be Mihawk.
I wonder if it's just a personal preference for Oda to draw curved blades. Or if this was intentional, to give further depth to the design by making Yoru a 'sword hybrid'. In order to resemble a samurai blade as well, as a nod to Mihawk following the path of the samurai.

I think that making it a single edged sword was done partly to show how skilled Mihawk is. Only having one edge to your sword restricts the kinds of movements you can make with the blade, and while it does open up some new techniques, having a blade that large that you'll need to quickly maneuver to be effective with stands as a testament to Mihawk's skill.
To me the sword seems like a combination of a claymore/zweihander and a dao/falchion. It also somewhat resembles a cutlass, which is the stereotypical blade for pirates to use.

IMO the sword it most resembles is a Kriegsmesser, doubt Oda even knows what one is though.

@@Dreadnautilus If he does, this might actually be a very obscure nod to how Mihawk sliced Don Krieg's ship in two - like a knife goes through butter, lol. (The word by word translation of Kriegsmesser is "war knife".)
Unlikely, but it would be hilarious if that was part of the decision.

This is the first One Piece video I have ever watched. I just got into anime and manga 3 months ago and though I had known about one piece for some time, I always pegged it as just some comedic cartoony action anime. I never would have guessed it had such deep and multifaceted characterization and character development, good writing and world building. Anime really continues to surprise me.
