In this One Piece knight of the sea jinbe character analysis I discuss the role of Jinbei in the one piece manga and the one piece anime. Jinbe is a very well developed and impactful character in the story of one piece. Jinbe´s character is very complex and his backstory with the fishmen on fishman island is one of the most meaningful in all of one piece and in the crew. Beside his role as the helmsman on the straw hat crew, he also has great fight powers due to his knowledge in fish men karate and is able to support Luffy and the others of his crew. Brook has been playing a very important role in the story and he dreams of creating peace between the fish-men and the humans one day. As a warlord and shijibukai he also has interacted with the likes of white beard and big mom and was part of the marine ford war.

The man has taken more "bullets" for luffy than any other member. He also helped restore Luffy's will after Ace died. Definitely worthy

@@PhiDuyanh I could never forget my favorite character in the series. But Jimbei has more to lose than Zoro & he still did what he did. That's why I put him above in terms of sacrifices made.
Jimbei did all of that within hours of meeting Luffy while Zoro was a bit on the fence until he lost against Mihawk at Baratie. So let's not down play Jimbei's accomplishments we can stan all the strawhats, they've shown their loyalty to Luffy in one way or another.
I vote Smoker. He's one of the oldest recurring characters that isn't a crew member, and has an interesting dynamic with them. also, it would be neat to see the series jump to the marrines simply because of all the pirates.
At this point in the story any new strawhat would have to be a recurring cast member from the length of the story if they're going to have as much emotional significance as a strawhat from pre-ts

To me Smoker more fits the role of Garp to Luffy's Gol D Roger, do you know what I mean? Obviously they're not the same people but I've always felt like that was something Oda was building up between them. My vote would absolutely be for Bon Clay like Somenerdpig said.

Jimbe punching Big Mom off of the Sunny is honestly one of my favorite moments in One Piece. I think I cheered out loud the first time I saw it.
Vagabond Drill was hype asf. Together with Luffy & Teach he‘s my favorite

Secret FM Karate implies it’s a move he doesn’t just use against anyone.
Also his opponent is a Yonko. It would be kind of presumptuous to not use your strongest technique.

One thing I never hear people talk about is the way that Jinbe inherited the will of both Otohime and Fisher Tiger.
During his time on the Sun Pirates’ initial voyage he came to understand the nature of racism on an individual level and did acted in favor of immediate harm reduction through his role in helping Koala heal from her past and return home safely.
However, after Tiger’s death Jinbe allowed himself to become a symbol of positive development toward unity with the humans by joining the Shichibukai, which demonstrates that similarly to Otohime, as he grew as a person and started to have a more complete perspective on race relations he became aware that systemic change is needed before Fishmen and Humans can ever live together in any meaningful way. His goal shifted from safety from humans to a better future where both groups could live together, which meant trying to effect change within their systems of government.
Fisher Tiger was too traumatized by his past to pursue any sort of meaningful systemic change, while Otohime was so focused on structural issues that she didn’t really understand the cycle of hatred on an individual level. The fact that Jinbe has come to terms with things and had a full perspective on the issue is what I think will ultimately help him to realize their dream of peace.

I noticed that the number 3 has a meaning for the future big 3 of luffy's crew Zoro's 3 sword style with his 3 swords, earrings, and scars. Sanji's name has the number 3 in it's meaning he's the 3rd son of a notorious family and his power suit has the number 3 on it. As for Jimbei he has consistently saved Luffy's 3 times at marineford, Fishman island, whole cake island, he did so physically and if you notice like a helmsman he in sense 'steered' Luffy's actions and mental state of mind in one form or another making the end result bigger than what Luffy expected for example who to fight when, and what to fight for. From this perspective I believe he Jimbei will be the true vice captain of the crew or will most likely assume the position that literally fills the 3rd spot of the big 3 power houses of the crew. Furthermore look at it this way you would not want fight Jimbei in or under water, Zoro on land within his range he literally destroy's people and mountains we all know, or Sanji in the air I mean seriously. In conclusion can anyone imagine a combined attack with the big 3 I mentioned together with the style of combination that was used during thriller bark arc!! It is hard to imagine a lot characters or crews for that matter blocking such a devastating force.... Mind Blown!! OK I'm done any thoughts and feedback is welcome remember you heard this theory here first!!!

Always thought this man was underrated and he’s a top 3 character for me atm. I’m relatively new to the series (only been watching for 4 years now and I’m currently in the midst of dressrosa) but his stern earnest nature always delivers. 10/10 character.

@@chinuaalibatya7345 subversion of expectations was the theme of that arc; it was also shown as Ace is introduced as a "mystery fighter" or potentially dangerous when he was actually an ally/Luffys brother..
The Pirate's were the good guys, the government sanctioned war lord & marines were the villains in the beginning but Smoker decides to not arrest Luffy when he's saved by him making the marines neutral until Hina shows up.
This side switching and villains becoming good also plays into the arc and series later especially considering Robin and Vivi were rivals until the Straw hats especially Luffy brought them together under one flag. And instead of the freind joining the Duality is the enemy was the 7th member as the Alabasta narrative and arc is over when she chooses to stay.
These videos are so high quality... It’s a shame that this channel is so underrated.

Vivi is officially considered a Strawhat according to the Vivre Card Databook.
The vivre card also says shanks was a yanko when he lost his arm and that turned out to not be true in chapter 957

And Mihawk is definitely not shallow. If he doesn't interest you that's fine, but don't go slandering him because you don't want to get into him, just keep on going with your life and maybe give this conent a dislike so the next video isn't about him, that's all.

As for Mihawk, I didn't give much of an explanation myself either because I don't think it was the point of my comment back then, but seeing that it's come two times I think it warrants at least a short one. I'm gonna guess that you're up to date with One Piece of course, so spoilers. I hope you wouldn't go criticizing a character otherwise...
I can't say that I agree with this plain statement "And yes, he is very 2 dimensional!" at all (especially spoken like a fact withut even a glimpse of an explanation). His present position regarding the Shichibukai losing their position already makes him quite interesting by itself and to be honest just being a Shichibukai by itself gives most of it's members a shade of gray. What would make these pirates work with the government? Different answers for different reasons.
But even among said members he stands out; not only is he a Shichibukai, but the best swordsman in the whole One Piece world! His position isn't an easily achievable one, and it already tells quite a lot about his character.
Which is, by the way, completely interlinked with one of the main characters, with him being the end goal of Zoro. You know, a big fucking deal. Saying that he's two dimensional is akin to saying Shanks is two dimensional. I may agree that maybe not much has been shown about them and that there are more questions than answers but just from their positions in the story I don't think it would be correct to say that they are "two dimensional".
And that's not even going into detail about his relationship with the aforementioned Shanks, his realtionship with Zoro and even with Luffy. Or his short interactions with the world government, specifically Sengoku and Tsuru, and even the Whitebeard pirates. Or his personality, actions and general demeanor. There's a lot to unravel with this man mate, so much potential!
And I'm certainly open to having a discussion and even changing my mind in regards to him!
Although being honest maybe not gladly given this rough start...
But goddamn man... Calm down a little... Please...

I was just thinking about how much shit Jinbe has been through. Brook might be the oldest crew member, but he spent most of his life stranded on a dead ship. And Franky is older than most of the crew but again he still was mostly working through one main conflict.
Meanwhile Jinbe man. He's been on so many different crews and organizations. He's joined the world government and rebelled against them. He's dealt directly with Yonko and Racism first-hand. He has seen so much and dealt with so much shit throughout his life.

A missing arm, leg or eye won't stop Jinbei from having the 2nd best sacrifice of the series (Ace no. 1 all time in OP)
I can bet ya he is gonna be in act 3. I predict hes gonna show up very early into act 3!
Jinbe might reappear in wano arc with several burn marks from Oven and cuts from Smoothie.
But most definitely, Jinbe is going to hold the spotlight when the Will of Ds, with Luffy being the frontliner, actually took off to "kill" some false gods up on Mariejoa.
Oda said Jinbe will be a bit different from how we know him when he comes to wano. It's also the reason why he doesn't include Jinbe in covers because he does not wanna spoil his changes. I can't wait till he reappears cause he's my favorite!

imo you got jinbei’s character spot on as well as his arc n motives.
the moment he got introduced in the impel down arc i had hoped he’d be the next strawhat n luffy inviting him after fishman island arc n jinbei actually accepting made me so happy! n then jinbei’s game of peek-a-boo started lol. at first this made me quite anxious that he wasn’t joining after all n gets some off screen death to give luffy a new drive in a certain dirction (N i am still sorta anxious that jinbei won’t make it to wano), but by now i am also fairly certain that one of the reasons jinbei has been used sparsely so far is because he’d been too over powered for the problems the strawhats faced during the punkhazard|dressrosa|zou arc. he is a considerable addition to their force n the enemies that they’ve faced so far rapadidly gained in power as well. but just -not enough-
in a way dressrosa particularly was a lot about showing off how strong luffy, zoro, frankie n robin have gotten. jinbei would have thrown that out of balance.
but he got re-introduced during whole cake arc. for once due to plot reasons, absolutely, but also because the enemies there protrait a massive power upgrade (With our first opponent with over 1billion belly to his name).
so his involvement made sense in 2 ways.
n now with the wani arc we’re again in an arc with an ever growing power gap.
it’s also the arc the strawhats are finally back together again.

The problem with jinbei is he's just not there. I reckon he was turned into a homie by big mom. He's gonna be turned on the straw hats but refuse big mom's will through the strength of his own will in wano. Just theorising around the " even if you die, Dont die. " Parting words.

Do it about Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King himself. Outside the Strawhats, he is definitely the most important character in One Piece even though he isn’t directly doing anything. His death is what set in motion all the history and we continuously return to his past life to explain the present.
i think there is a problem with that request; we dont yet know quite enough of his story to get a good picture of who he is. if you argue that he is simmilar to luffy, then what reason is there to make it, when it would simply be a repeat of the luffy video?

What a beautifully done video！it is rare to see character analysis on OP and your work is therefore such a perfection! Really love the music and sound effects in the background together with the images and your soothing voice, it becomes such an enjoyment to watch this production.
Jinbe has been one of my favourite characters ever since the marineford arc because of his strong belief in justice and equality. One of my most memorable moments of Jinbe was when he stayed side by side with Luffy through the darkest time of his life, and ultimately reminded him of what’s left to cherish. I think this just shows the maturity of Jinbe as a decision maker in the straw hat crew because of his age and experience. Anyway. I really look forward to seeing him soon on Sunny!

I disagree, i considered him a member at Fishman Island, he said he'd join when he got his affairs settled. Luffy more or less said there was a spot for him, when he was ready. So to me, that meant he was already crew, just had to settle his affairs before officially joining,.
I'd be more inclined to agree with you if for one he still wasn't allied with the Big Mom Pirates who became the Strawhats' enemies at the end of Fishman Island. While Jinbei was still allied with the BM Pirates they fired on the Sunny Go and ended up taking Sanji from Zou.
Additionally, I admit those things aren't directly related to Jinbei himself. But, then he ended up bringing a poneglyph for Big Mom to make up for him leaving. So, he was actively doing work for Big Mom during this time period between the Fishman Island arc and Whole Cake Island arc.
It's pretty difficult for me to consider Jinbei a "real," member at that point in time given his future actions from that point forward and the Strawhats relationship with the Big Mom Pirates.

I pointed out why I thought that was an odd conclusion to come to.
I’m aware Jinbei has been a Strawhat member from the end of WCI and onward. No disputes there.
i am more than willing to consider him a crew member, but saying it was valid all the way from fishman island is a bit more questionable. even if i wanted him to join at FI, it was clear luffy asked too early within Jimbei's own story. To me, he was an official member from the moment he tried to leave Big Mom, far before the arc was over, but still after dealing with his problems from FI.

Well done O. I’ve never found the addition of Jinbei into the Mugiwara crew wholly aesthetic, but listening to your rationale has gone a long way into my reconciliation of the idea.
I'm redoing a comment I made, because I actually have more to say than just "Jinbe's my favorite character" (though he is).
First of all, the Tenryubito didn't kill Otohime, Hody Jones did then framed it on a random human. Not only that, but Jinbe wasn't stripped of his title, he was arrested and put in Impel Down to "cool him off" after he suddenly went on a rampage when the Marines/World Government declared war against Whitebeard, apparently thinking Jinbe would be all for it since he hates pirates and were oblivious to the fact that Whitebeard had been protecting Fishman Island for years. Also, Jinbe can only talk to whale sharks, not all sea life in general. In fact, it's noted that typically only merfolk can talk to the creatures of the sea, and Jinbe displaying a similar ability is incredibly unique compared to fishmen as a whole.
All those nitpicks aside, I really liked how you summed up Jinbe's character, in particular Jinbe's dutifulness. I always felt that Jinbe's selflessness was something that was oddly underplayed compared to how Oda characterizes other characters; he's usually very blunt, and subtlety might as well not exist to him, which results in various characters playing up their various quirks and personality traits. Jinbe is very restraining in that regard, which already makes him unique, but I also love how, when it came to announcing his intentions of joining the Straw Hat Pirates, he frames it as if it's the right thing to do for the good of his people, not so much trying to justify it, but because he sincerely believes it. It comes as a surprise to him that his crew is well aware of his intentions and say he can go ahead and join them, with one of them even saying after everything he's done for fishman kind, he earned the right to make at least one selfish decision. Aladdin actually addressing the fact that Jinbe almost never thinks for himself and always thinks of others is also something I like; it's not a character flaw, but it is something he should grapple with, especially since Luffy would not want him to throw away his life, which he's apparently ready to do for a lot of people at this point.
I also feel like, in addition to the reasons you gave, there's another reason why Jinbe couldn't join right away, and that's his overall strength and power level. I get the feeling that he and Luffy were evenly matched by the time they reunited on Fishman Island, or at least close to it, and while it would make sense for the captain to be the strongest member of a crew and have a bigger bounty, that's not nearly as important as making sure he doesn't stick out as too overly powerful for the Straw Hat Crew at that point in time. We barely had a chance to truly see how much the crew has grown stronger as a whole, and having someone as strong as Jinbe join would lead to a lot of scenarios where he would end up either stealing the spotlight or do a lot of the heavy lifting when it came to the increasingly more powerful adversaries the Straw Hat Pirates faced. It only makes sense for him to officially join the crew once Luffy and the Straw Hats started actively and directly attacking the Yonko/Pirate Emperors. I also have a feeling that there's another story-related reason why he stayed behind and didn't go to Wano with the rest of the crew, like he's going to show up just when the crew needs him the most... Which might be soon, as it turns out.
Anyway, the day when Jinbe starts actively starts sailing with the rest of the crew (and is part of color spreads featuring the whole crew, which for some reason he hasn't yet) is going to be a happy day for me! I liked Jinbe almost immediately when we first met him, and I've been hoping for a really long time that he'd join the crew proper. While he may be officially part of the crew, I still can't wait for him to start interacting with them on a more regular basis!

Jimbei is a top 3 favorite for me, He is so strong especially during the Big Mom chapter. Showing no fear and attacking her to defend the ship was so fun to watch. Unlike luffy and the others Jimbei's attacks did effect Big Mom.
