Glad to see more and more RUclipsrs who recognize the subtle brilliance of both characters in this exchange! Another cool detail is the name on Katakuri's back, it's not his name but the name of the Charlotte family. The name he dare not bring shame to by ever falling on his back. So just as he discards the scarf to reveal his true self, he also discards his jacket to release the burden of the Charlotte family he was carrying on his shoulders, he then allows himself to fall on his back.
You just put everything that was on my mind. Luffy vs. Katakuri is my favourite Luffy battle because of how much both characters grow at every blows they exchange. They learn from each other. They earn mutual respect. And Katakuri is not a villain that Luffy usually fights against. He is an honorable man who is strong because he has family that he needs to protect.
Yeah I agree too! But I really don't understand why people think that someone who is such a perfect person like Katakuri before his true personality reveal is boring. I mean, people hate Itachi because he's boring and I don't understand why... I like people like that but the majority just seems to think otherwise

You know whats more epic ? They are fighting on a mirror dimension. They mirror each other to the point that they are learning each other's traits, wisdom, and almost everything. Oda never missed this kind of details.
Brullee is one of my favorite characters in one piece! For the first time, Luffy is the invader that came to mess up with someone's home in the whole cake arc as well. Brulle shows such amazing widths of emotion and humour, her moments with her brother are my favorites overal!!! the fact that the "villain" wants to keep his family protected is what breaks the big mom pirates from the rest, since we see different notions from each of them as a crew.
The way Luffy put his hat on face of katakuri to hide his face is a such great way to show respect our opponent ...bcoz katakuri doesn't liked someone to see his face... that last hat scene after battle is just MASTERPIECE
After the battle concluded I instantly thought about Rayleigh asking luffy what he would do when he fought stronger opponents, and luffy responded saying it depends on what kind of person he fought.. Oda is truly masterful bringing things full circle
Something about Katakuri taking off his jacket with the name of the family to fight for real Luffy makes so much sense. It shows that it's not about him being part of the Big Mom crew/family anymore, it's a fight for himself.

That single exchange warps up the fight perfectly. not only does Katakuri think Luffy has what it takes, the tone of it also says as though Luffy has even bested him in Future Vision. Something along the line of "You're seeing much further into the future than i even dare to . I myself cant see myself be a pirate king yet"
I also like the fact that the longer the fight goes on, the mirrors shatter more and more, symbolizing Katakuri gradually freeing himself from the pressure of always being watched and having a certain kind of appearance expected of him.
Katakuri and Brulee's relationship also reflects the relationship of Sanji and Reiju, where he has protected her and created a persona and Reiju has a persona of heartlessness to protect Sanji but in reality both of them aren't like that. Both Reiju and Katakuri also find it impossible to break away from their parental figures (BM and Judge).
Katakuri doesn't want to escape from BM? Where did you get that from? Neither does Reiju. If either of them wanted that, they'd just leave, especially Katakuri. Everyone in that family knows he's the strongest of them and still respect him even after his defeat. He is also one of the successors of their "empire" if BM dies or "retires" lol

I only highlighted that they both developed personas while under the control of overbearing parental figures which they have to live up to certain expectations which has lead them to feeling obliged to serve them. Katakuri's righteous, unbeatable and undefeated self and Reijus heartlessness are for their parents and sibling both as the oldest. While in reality they are nothing like how their siblings see them except for brulee with katakuri and Sanji with reiju. Who both saw through these personas. I'm even pretty sure Sanji asked Reiju why she didn't leave for her to relpy saying its too late for her but not for him and to live his life. Unless I remember that wrong or is anime only I don't know but the parallels are there. I hope this cleared up my thoughts for you.

Katakuri and Brulee were some of my favorites from the big mom pirates. It's especially cool when you consider that luffy and katakuri's battle was the man who never falls vs the man who always gets back up
I like how at certain points of the fight to show that luffy is learning how to see the future slightly, instead of doing the red line thing katakuri does, luffy just sometimes responds to katakuri before he even finishes asking his question.
I feel like physically, Katakuri could've kept going, but mentally he accepted defeat like, "Luffy is not a man to be taken down", or something along those lines, so he ended up losing his will to fight.
More so he lost reason to even continue the fight, as well as will. If he won it would only hurt Luffy and end his dream, who he is starting to really admire, if he lost nothing would really happen except Luffy escaping as well as on a character level gaining everything discussed in the video.

The fact of the matter is he was stronger than Luffy at the beginning of the fight and he was incredibly inspired seeing him get up over and over again. People say he lost will to fight as if Katakuri is weak willed and coulnd't have went on, but that wasn't really the point. It was a battle of ideals and Luffy was fighting to free Katakuri.

honestly for me i think the thing i loved the most of this fight was how much you could see that katakuri was really a product of those around him rather than a villain at heart and it makes me hopefully that at bare minimum, when big moms gets killed eventually that he will take the reigns of the big mom pirates and finally fix the problems that his mother caused for so many and more than that, it would be awesome if him and brulee ended up at wano to stop big mom and take her down the way he should have long ago and that he would do that so as to let luffy achieve his goal of taking down kaido and freeing the land of wano from his tyranny :D beyond all of that since i feel its almost a guarantee that katakuri will probably become the next leader of the big mom pirates, that he will actually become one of luffies rivals in the same way kid is or in the same way that it felt like rodger and whitebeard were where they are technically enemies but rather than fighting eachother out of hatred for one anohter, they fight eachother to prove themselves to each other :)

I just finished watching whole cake island for the first time and man this fight was incredible. Katakuri is an incredible character and might even be my favorite op antagonist. Another thing I'll mention is that I had seen a clip of katakuri stabbing himself to make up for luffy's wound before watching the fight, but when it happened it still hit me really hard. Truly a goat antagonist and fight no doubt
Awesome video. I remember not appreciating this fight as much when I was reading it weekly. But then I went back a few months ago when one piece was on break and read it from beginning to end. I recommend everyone to do that. It really is one of the greatest fights in one piece and manga period.
I'm not going to lie, I almost died laughing the first time I heard Katakuri say "Did I do Elephant Gun right?" It was such an innocent question in such a strange manner.
It was something said from an air of confidence and mockery, but you can hear that child behind it like "wow... if I could be free to be myself I could come up with fun moves like that and fight earnestly... If I could be free to be myself." And over the course of the later parts of the fight he uses more and more fruity moves like the giant spiked mace arm. That was who he was the whole time... I'm gonna cry ;(

I love how even though the trope of “im you but stronger” has been done to death one piece as usual has made it its own. While villains seeing the error of their way a ton of times also again one piece does it so uniquely with literal mirrors all over the place keeping that metaphor. Oda is the king of world building and writing and it never ceases to amaze me.
Katakuri is my personal favorite character and honestly I can’t wait for his return. Hopefully it is on the side of luffy in battle against a common enemy like black beards crew.

Sticky, gets pushed down and doesn't bounce back, there's no saying thats "I'm rubber you're mochi"... it's a thing that's meant to say they're both polymers but ones obviously stronger and sturdier while ones sticky and malleable. As we see in this fight, The malleable and sticky Katakuri *changes* and becomes *attached* to Luffy while the sturdy younger pirate comes out on top.
I disagree with one fact, of "Katakuri taking over as a leader" when Big Mom was in a frenzy. The one who showed LEADERSHIP is mostly Perospero. Katakuri did something important for the family, but the one who was "solving the problems" or at least trying was Perospero. He kept his cool and did not chase after small stuff, he focused on the bigger picture of calming down the Calamity that is his mother and keeping the damage as small as possible.
I think there are 2 fractions in the BM pirates: Those who would follow Perospero and those who would follow Katakuri. This was also made clear after they lost Big Mom in Wano
I agree but Perospero had to take on that role since he already was with her, Katakuri was busy fighting Luffy also Katakuri has color of the supreme king so imo he's more fit to be a leader.

In One Piece, we're used to seeing the strongest member as the natural leader, but Perospero was the MVP of the Big Mom Pirates in this battle. As good as the storytelling and fight between Luffy and Katakuri was, the real groundwork was done by Perospero, who even sacrificed an arm for his family and risked being killed by his own mother. He does not have Conquerers Haki, but Katakuri was not using it for the benefit of everyone either. He "went after the strongest intruder" while Perospero was "saving the kingdom". And nobody was questioning his authority at all, not even smoothy, who has a sizeable bigger bounty and is prolly a stronger fighter than him. Given, Perospero in the Wano Arc does not seem like the same thoughtful leader he was in the Totland Arc. Now he kinda seems vengeful and selfish.
Love how Luffy took inspiration from the abilities of his opponents in mirror matches. Future sight from Katakuri, obviously, but Gear Second is clearly at least partially inspired by Bellamy.
This whole arc took don't judge a book by its cover to a whole new level with flampe looking nice and cute at first then turning out to be so toxic, brulee that looked like such a bad "witch", pudding with her acting to be a sweet girl when she is forced to be like that by her mom, with big mom that may appear a nice person when she wants to have a country with all races in the world and then she turns out to be an actual cannibal, even with Luffy who to us may felt like the strongest at that time but he also needed to surpass himself, also with the whole wedding it sounded and looked really nice with all the sweets and cake but then it's also just fake, even Totland itself may look like such a nice place to live in that its fully made with sweets and chocolate and everything that is nice but it still has such a deep darkness living in. This arc is one of my favorites tbh especially that we get to see more about Sanji
Our two favorite gluttons! One of my favorite concepts is how Haki evens the playing field tremendously. Pre-Time Skip it was all about the best devil fruit and your techniques you can accomplish. Post-Time Skip, it is all about training and how much better you can become through hard work.

I would say their is one other thing that no one really analyzed . Which is katakuri having advanced armament haki, that he stated him self to have . That blocked mochi was doing real work to Luffy on another level .

There was one line where he told Luffy there is a higher level of armament, but he didn't necessarily imply that's what he was using. Maybe, but I doubt it when you look at how advanced armament is being depicted these days.
Justin O'Malley With the riyuou in Wano nowadays it can get a bit confusing, but I think there are simply people who have fought with armament haki for, I don’t know 30 years and their experience with it is much more, therefore their color of arms is stronger than others, hence why Katakuri’s punches were hurting Luffy’s ELEPHANT GUNNED fists. Katakuri wasn’t using riyuou. Even if he did, i dont think we would have it mentioned, as the whole totland arc was based around observation.

I never even thought about it that way, that Luffy's rubber represents his bouncing back no matter how many times his beaten and Katakuri's mochi, however flexible he may be stays the same after being beaten. Not just one of my favorite antagonists in OP, but seriously one of my favorites of all time through all of anime. Katakuri's character development as well as Luffy's development throughout their fight is better than I’ve seem in most story's!
Would love to see a video breaking down the psychology behind the Enel fight. As his god complex is what made him decide to just leave. And it’s quite unique as it’s one of the few Luffy wasn’t able to change in some way.
In this fight Oda really hammered home the fact that Luffys biggest strength is not his physical power but the ability to pull people to his side. Its what Mihawk was saying about Luffy during Marineford.
WCI arc is all about façade. When they first arrive, everyone seemed happy and the place is filled with great things. But we discover that it is all because Big Mom pressure her people and family to act this way. Big mom herself is not the cruel tyrant we know, as a child she is extremelly sweet and caring about her family. She grew to be a monster by being manipulated and abandon she suffered through all her life. Katakuri embodies that façade too. He acts as the cool and ruthless protector of his family, but if he could he liked to be a lot more free and careless. Luffy, on the other hand, never compromised who he is for anyone, completely ignoring or beating other people who comes his way. In that sense, I like your analysis, but Luffy is still the moral winner of the fight. He showed Katakuri that he is able to sacrifice himself to this freedom to act his way, while Katakuri is forever tied to the family bonds he have, even if he changes a part of his personality.
I hate child Big mom, she wasn't manipulated, and when she got abandoned by her parents mama was there for her. Sure, mama was going to betray her, but Big mom ate her and everyone else first, it's disgusting. The hunger pangs are the most pure evil parts of her character

He lives to fight strong opponents and keeps reminding them that his power has the properties of both rubber and gum. It's become a meme in the fanbase to always make sure you know that it is both rubber and gum! The joke here is that Luffy is missing the gum part.

Katakuri definitely could have won very quick if you kept making sharp objects and punched holes in luffy. Instead, he used blunt, fist-shaped mochi attacks to mimic luffy and minimize the overall damage. Imagine if his power attacks and awakened abilities made spears? Game over, instantly
keep in mind that this fight took place around chapter 850. 20+ years after the first chapter and the series still offering compelling fights and character development scenes, the best in the series at that point. And even now in Wano its continuing to give us these amazing compelling fights 1000 chapters later.
I loved this fight and the fact that Luffy upgraded his skills and how he uses them. He use to be straight into the fight. But after that fight he uses Haki to get rid of the trash and send off welcome punches then stares you down and welcomes the fight. You can really see how he is maturing.

I love the scene with Katakuri and Brulee after the fight where Brulee admits that she's been spying on katakuri and knows about his true nature and loves and accepts him anyway. its a deep look into the real connections between the big mom family.
Luffy covering kat’s mouth with his hat speaks volume to me. It’s luffy showing his respect Kat. I also love how kat apologizes for not noticing flampe interfering and luffy saying it was his fault for not dodging. If/when big mom gets out of the picture I can see them becoming allies because of their shared respect✊🏾

A fight is not the *same* as a battle, it's just very close in meaning and thus people who don't know the full meaning of both words will use them interchangeably. To clarify I don't disagree that many people use them interchangeably, I'm saying *everyone* who does is wrong and the only example they are good for is: English as a language is probably the least understood by it's own native speakers. im actually rewatching one piece right now while i wait for more wano to come out. im so hyped for whole cake now. i never thought much about it but your 100% right.
I rewatched this fight a second time, and honestly realised I've never been so intently focused on a specific fight like I was with this one. The slow progression of them both growing respect for each other throughout was a masterpiece. I can't wait to see a follow up on Katakuri now that Wano is over, or his reaction to that news. For me, he is the best antagonist that Luffy has fought in the series, because he's so unique and the situation is so different.

One of my favourite moments is when Luffy tells him doesn't care what he looks like after seeing his mouth without the scarf and you see in Katakuri's face that he was surprised. It was a nice to see.
This always felt really strange to me. Half the characters in One Piece look extremely abnormal in some way. And yet, Katakuri's mouth is the straw that breaks the camel's back? What about Usopp's nose? What about all the modification Franky has done to his body? What about Crocodile's hand being replaced with a hook? What about Ivankoff's massive freakin' head? Hell, Katakuri's sister (the one watching him and Luffy fight) looks more abnormal than him, wearing an egg as pants. Even Oven and Perospero look more abnormal than him, with the former's weird hair and Perospero's massive freakin' tongue! Even with his mouth, he looks incredibly normal. Only when he eats doughnuts and expands his mouth to look like a frog does it seem weird. Anyway, I just felt that One Piece is just a really weird show to have its characters judge others by appearance

I never thought of their fight like this before. Huh. This really puts a new perspective. Tbh, I'm on the fence with which fight I liked better: Lucci vs Luffy or Katakuri vs Luffy.
I would resume Katakuris character un the moment he threw his scarf to the floor. The will to smile, to show yourself and enjoy the battle ahead, in that moment he showed us his will to D. That aside, my theory on Katakuri's personality is that his entire self was builded to be the one who protects his family, because his mother could not, he had to be hypersensitive (future sight) to his environment, read how to prevent his mother's hunger pains and prevent mayor deaths, he lived in constant fear and his happiness depended on how his family was. The fight with Luffy was probably the first time he could take his mask/scarf off and be himself. Probably Perospero and other mayor characters of the Charlotte family are feeling something similar, where they have to take care of their mother and fear her. I hope the Elbaf saga will show us how this entire family changes, be it through BM and her story and/or the change that started with Katakuri.

Another cool detail is the name on Katakuri's back, it's not his name but the name of the Charlotte family. The name he dare not bring shame to by ever falling on his back. So just as he discards the scarf to reveal his true self, he also discards his jacket to release the burden of the Charlotte family he was carrying on his shoulders, he then allows himself to fall on his back.

You just put everything that was on my mind. Luffy vs. Katakuri is my favourite Luffy battle because of how much both characters grow at every blows they exchange. They learn from each other. They earn mutual respect. And Katakuri is not a villain that Luffy usually fights against. He is an honorable man who is strong because he has family that he needs to protect.

Brullee is one of my favorite characters in one piece! For the first time, Luffy is the invader that came to mess up with someone's home in the whole cake arc as well. Brulle shows such amazing widths of emotion and humour, her moments with her brother are my favorites overal!!! the fact that the "villain" wants to keep his family protected is what breaks the big mom pirates from the rest, since we see different notions from each of them as a crew.
Honestly, I found her annoying at first. But the scene whit Katakuri made her so awesome!

Katakuri and Brulee's relationship also reflects the relationship of Sanji and Reiju, where he has protected her and created a persona and Reiju has a persona of heartlessness to protect Sanji but in reality both of them aren't like that. Both Reiju and Katakuri also find it impossible to break away from their parental figures (BM and Judge).

Katakuri and Brulee were some of my favorites from the big mom pirates. It's especially cool when you consider that luffy and katakuri's battle was the man who never falls vs the man who always gets back up
I like how at certain points of the fight to show that luffy is learning how to see the future slightly, instead of doing the red line thing katakuri does, luffy just sometimes responds to katakuri before he even finishes asking his question.
I feel like physically, Katakuri could've kept going, but mentally he accepted defeat like, "Luffy is not a man to be taken down", or something along those lines, so he ended up losing his will to fight.
More so he lost reason to even continue the fight, as well as will. If he won it would only hurt Luffy and end his dream, who he is starting to really admire, if he lost nothing would really happen except Luffy escaping as well as on a character level gaining everything discussed in the video.

The fact of the matter is he was stronger than Luffy at the beginning of the fight and he was incredibly inspired seeing him get up over and over again. People say he lost will to fight as if Katakuri is weak willed and coulnd't have went on, but that wasn't really the point. It was a battle of ideals and Luffy was fighting to free Katakuri.

honestly for me i think the thing i loved the most of this fight was how much you could see that katakuri was really a product of those around him rather than a villain at heart and it makes me hopefully that at bare minimum, when big moms gets killed eventually that he will take the reigns of the big mom pirates and finally fix the problems that his mother caused for so many and more than that, it would be awesome if him and brulee ended up at wano to stop big mom and take her down the way he should have long ago and that he would do that so as to let luffy achieve his goal of taking down kaido and freeing the land of wano from his tyranny :D beyond all of that since i feel its almost a guarantee that katakuri will probably become the next leader of the big mom pirates, that he will actually become one of luffies rivals in the same way kid is or in the same way that it felt like rodger and whitebeard were where they are technically enemies but rather than fighting eachother out of hatred for one anohter, they fight eachother to prove themselves to each other :)

I just finished watching whole cake island for the first time and man this fight was incredible. Katakuri is an incredible character and might even be my favorite op antagonist. Another thing I'll mention is that I had seen a clip of katakuri stabbing himself to make up for luffy's wound before watching the fight, but when it happened it still hit me really hard. Truly a goat antagonist and fight no doubt

If I could be free to be myself." And over the course of the later parts of the fight he uses more and more fruity moves like the giant spiked mace arm. That was who he was the whole time... I love how even though the trope of “im you but stronger” has been done to death one piece as usual has made it its own. While villains seeing the error of their way a ton of times also again one piece does it so uniquely with literal mirrors all over the place keeping that metaphor. Oda is the king of world building and writing and it never ceases to amaze me.

Sticky, gets pushed down and doesn't bounce back, there's no saying thats "I'm rubber you're mochi"... it's a thing that's meant to say they're both polymers but ones obviously stronger and sturdier while ones sticky and malleable. As we see in this fight, The malleable and sticky Katakuri *changes* and becomes *attached* to Luffy while the sturdy younger pirate comes out on top.

I disagree with one fact, of "Katakuri taking over as a leader" when Big Mom was in a frenzy. The one who showed LEADERSHIP is mostly Perospero. Katakuri did something important for the family, but the one who was "solving the problems" or at least trying was Perospero. He kept his cool and did not chase after small stuff, he focused on the bigger picture of calming down the Calamity that is his mother and keeping the damage as small as possible.
I think there are 2 fractions in the BM pirates: Those who would follow Perospero and those who would follow Katakuri. This was also made clear after they lost Big Mom in Wano
Both Perospero and Katakuri showed extraordinary leadership in the battle on whole cake.

In One Piece, we're used to seeing the strongest member as the natural leader, but Perospero was the MVP of the Big Mom Pirates in this battle. As good as the storytelling and fight between Luffy and Katakuri was, the real groundwork was done by Perospero, who even sacrificed an arm for his family and risked being killed by his own mother. He does not have Conquerers Haki, but Katakuri was not using it for the benefit of everyone either. He "went after the strongest intruder" while Perospero was "saving the kingdom". And nobody was questioning his authority at all, not even smoothy, who has a sizeable bigger bounty and is prolly a stronger fighter than him.
Given, Perospero in the Wano Arc does not seem like the same thoughtful leader he was in the Totland Arc. Now he kinda seems vengeful and selfish.

This whole arc took don't judge a book by its cover to a whole new level with flampe looking nice and cute at first then turning out to be so toxic, brulee that looked like such a bad "witch", pudding with her acting to be a sweet girl when she is forced to be like that by her mom, with big mom that may appear a nice person when she wants to have a country with all races in the world and then she turns out to be an actual cannibal, even with Luffy who to us may felt like the strongest at that time but he also needed to surpass himself, also with the whole wedding it sounded and looked really nice with all the sweets and cake but then it's also just fake, even Totland itself may look like such a nice place to live in that its fully made with sweets and chocolate and everything that is nice but it still has such a deep darkness living in. This arc is one of my favorites tbh especially that we get to see more about Sanji

I would say their is one other thing that no one really analyzed . Which is katakuri having advanced armament haki, that he stated him self to have . That blocked mochi was doing real work to Luffy on another level .

There was one line where he told Luffy there is a higher level of armament, but he didn't necessarily imply that's what he was using. Maybe, but I doubt it when you look at how advanced armament is being depicted these days.
Justin O'Malley With the riyuou in Wano nowadays it can get a bit confusing, but I think there are simply people who have fought with armament haki for, I don’t know 30 years and their experience with it is much more, therefore their color of arms is stronger than others, hence why Katakuri’s punches were hurting Luffy’s ELEPHANT GUNNED fists.

In this fight Oda really hammered home the fact that Luffys biggest strength is not his physical power but the ability to pull people to his side. Its what Mihawk was saying about Luffy during Marineford.
WCI arc is all about façade. When they first arrive, everyone seemed happy and the place is filled with great things. But we discover that it is all because Big Mom pressure her people and family to act this way.
Big mom herself is not the cruel tyrant we know, as a child she is extremelly sweet and caring about her family. She grew to be a monster by being manipulated and abandon she suffered through all her life.
Katakuri embodies that façade too. He acts as the cool and ruthless protector of his family, but if he could he liked to be a lot more free and careless. Luffy, on the other hand, never compromised who he is for anyone, completely ignoring or beating other people who comes his way. In that sense, I like your analysis, but Luffy is still the moral winner of the fight. He showed Katakuri that he is able to sacrifice himself to this freedom to act his way, while Katakuri is forever tied to the family bonds he have, even if he changes a part of his personality.
I hate child Big mom, she wasn't manipulated, and when she got abandoned by her parents mama was there for her. Sure, mama was going to betray her, but Big mom ate her and everyone else first, it's disgusting. The hunger pangs are the most pure evil parts of her character

The one thing nobody really says about this fight is that in the beginning it’s the only fight he thought he might lose, and at the same time katakuri was sure he’d win until the end.

He lives to fight strong opponents and keeps reminding them that his power has the properties of both rubber and gum. It's become a meme in the fanbase to always make sure you know that it is both rubber and gum! The joke here is that Luffy is missing the gum part.

Katakuri definitely could have won very quick if you kept making sharp objects and punched holes in luffy. Instead, he used blunt, fist-shaped mochi attacks to mimic luffy and minimize the overall damage. Imagine if his power attacks and awakened abilities made spears? Game over, instantly

keep in mind that this fight took place around chapter 850. 20+ years after the first chapter and the series still offering compelling fights and character development scenes, the best in the series at that point. And even now in Wano its continuing to give us these amazing compelling fights 1000 chapters later.
I loved this fight and the fact that Luffy upgraded his skills and how he uses them. He use to be straight into the fight. But after that fight he uses Haki to get rid of the trash and send off welcome punches then stares you down and welcomes the fight. You can really see how he is maturing.

I love the scene with Katakuri and Brulee after the fight where Brulee admits that she's been spying on katakuri and knows about his true nature and loves and accepts him anyway. its a deep look into the real connections between the big mom family.

Luffy covering kat’s mouth with his hat speaks volume to me. It’s luffy showing his respect Kat. I also love how kat apologizes for not noticing flampe interfering and luffy saying it was his fault for not dodging. If/when big mom gets out of the picture I can see them becoming allies because of their shared respect✊🏾

@Jordan Vance no...different words have different meanings and most "interchangeable" words are more nuanced than you think. A fight is not the *same* as a battle, it's just very close in meaning and thus people who don't know the full meaning of both words will use them interchangeably. To clarify I don't disagree that many people use them interchangeably, I'm saying *everyone* who does is wrong and the only example they are good for is: English as a language is probably the least understood by it's own native speakers. I don't mean that as an insult, but using words interchangeably is literally not giving a shit about the meaning of what you say

im actually rewatching one piece right now while i wait for more wano to come out. im so hyped for whole cake now. i never thought much about it but your 100% right.
I rewatched this fight a second time, and honestly realised I've never been so intently focused on a specific fight like I was with this one. The slow progression of them both growing respect for each other throughout was a masterpiece. I can't wait to see a follow up on Katakuri now that Wano is over, or his reaction to that news. For me, he is the best antagonist that Luffy has fought in the series, because he's so unique and the situation is so different.

He is he could’ve killed Luffy anytime he wanted during the battle but chose to tell Luffy to get back up. Before Luffy left, Katakuri asked Luffy will he come back to defeat Big Mom to free everyone from her control
Luffy did win the fight and Katakuri might come to Wano to help Luffy since Big Mom’s in Wano with a majority of her crew

One of my favourite moments is when Luffy tells him doesn't care what he looks like after seeing his mouth without the scarf and you see in Katakuri's face that he was surprised. It was a nice to see.
This always felt really strange to me. Half the characters in One Piece look extremely abnormal in some way. And yet, Katakuri's mouth is the straw that breaks the camel's back? What about Usopp's nose? What about all the modification Franky has done to his body? What about Crocodile's hand being replaced with a hook? What about Ivankoff's massive freakin' head? Hell, Katakuri's sister (the one watching him and Luffy fight) looks more abnormal than him, wearing an egg as pants. Even Oven and Perospero look more abnormal than him, with the former's weird hair and Perospero's massive freakin' tongue!
Even with his mouth, he looks incredibly normal. Only when he eats doughnuts and expands his mouth to look like a frog does it seem weird. Anyway, I just felt that One Piece is just a really weird show to have its characters judge others by appearance

I would resume Katakuris character un the moment he threw his scarf to the floor. The will to smile, to show yourself and enjoy the battle ahead, in that moment he showed us his will to D.
That aside, my theory on Katakuri's personality is that his entire self was builded to be the one who protects his family, because his mother could not, he had to be hypersensitive (future sight) to his environment, read how to prevent his mother's hunger pains and prevent mayor deaths, he lived in constant fear and his happiness depended on how his family was. The fight with Luffy was probably the first time he could take his mask/scarf off and be himself.
Probably Perospero and other mayor characters of the Charlotte family are feeling something similar, where they have to take care of their mother and fear her. I hope the Elbaf saga will show us how this entire family changes, be it through BM and her story and/or the change that started with Katakuri.
