      I won't lie I religiously enjoy One Piece and hold Oda on a pillar that no one else could live up to but even Luffy had to realize that no one is perfect and by extension it applies to Oda. So I have one request, I want to see an analysis on the most controversial topic, failure. Even the holy Miyamoto from Nintendo isn't perfect and I want to see a video on something in One Piece that doesn't live up to the rest of the series.

    • @AnyMe223

      Ace can be criticised as a character on its own, with the following context: Had he been a main character in a story of his own, with the amount of development he had up to Marineford, he would've been a garbage MC, barely over Boruto (impossible to be worse than Boruto).
      But he was not the MC of One Piece. His role on the story was to add to Luffy's background and bounce reactions off him, and in that regard, his character was great. People also claim that having his flashback before Marineford would have made it more impactful, and all-in-all better, but I entirely disagree with that claim. At the moment of Ace's death we are not supposed to be caring about him, but about Luffy and the world changing. Afterwards we get to know who Ace was, and then we can care about him in a more personal level, if we so desire, while we get to know about Sabo, and add a whole new layer of meaning to his demise.
      So, what I mean with that little rant is that every time Ace gets criticised I just pity the critic who didn't understand what was happening in front of their eyes

    • @tayojones9460
      @tayojones9460 4 года назад +134

      Please do not compare Boruto to Ace. Ace may not have appeared as many times as Jinbei but he is still a better developed character than the entire Boruto cast.

      @AnyMe223 4 года назад +24

      @@tayojones9460 Don't get me wrong, I entirely agree!
      The case I was trying to make is that, IF Ace had been the MC, and IF he had only had the development we got up until Marineford (i.e. going after BB, losing and getting executed) he could be criticised as a crappy character (yet even then better than Boruto).
      But as he was *not* the MC, and his flashback was correctly place after his death.
      I do get you, though. Having any character in a comparative sentence together with Boruto, even if it is to say it's better, is somehow hurtful

    1. He died because of who his father was.

    I think that the reason why so many people don't like Ace is because they're sour about losing him after having so little time with him.
    I think he's an amazing character. He has a burden best described as "sins of the father" and although that weighs down in him, possibly pulling him into a childhood depression at some point, he does everything possible to live life as free and happy as possible. "He has no compelling goal" they say? Well, "I want to live life with no regrets" is compelling enough. His carefree demeanour and positive attitude aren't just a reference to Luffy, Roger, and Shanks, but further support his life philosophy of living a life of no regrets. One cannot regret being happy and carefree but they can regret being depressed and stressed out.
    Furthermore, that pride that got him killed isn't just a plot device to get him killed, it is the quality of a King. Roger and Whitebeard were famous for not retreating until their entire crews were safe, Ace refused to turn his back on Bluejam as it would risk Luffy's life. In this case, he was protecting his "father's" legacy and was blind to the power gap between him and Sakazuki.
    We have seen enough of him to get a pretty good idea of who he is as a person but not enough to feel the same for him as we do for any of the Strawhats.
    That is, in my opinion, why many of the fanbase don't appreciate him as much as they should. It's a tragedy, really, that he hasn't had a chance to reach his full potential both in the world and in the fanbase but I believe it is what actually makes the tragedy factor better.

    • @asquarefix7193
      @asquarefix7193 4 года назад +10

      I think it's important that we don't see much of him anyway because that what makes it all the more tragic. He died young = He didn't get to his full potential yet.
      WE all should see that much of him because at the end we are viewing Ace from Luffy's perspective ( except the part where Ace started a fight with blackbeard because it is important to establish this scene from his perspective for better context of the following events) and not as another existing full character...because at the end, Ace lived mostly in Luffy's mind for us...

    I still don’t get how people can not like Ace ESPECIALLY after Marineford
    He may not have gotten the slow growing character development that would usually make the audience emotionally invest in a character but he did develop, its peak was literally his death. The fragments of his life that was showcased to us bit by bit contrasts his initial introduction as the cool responsible older brother of Luffy (as seen when he appeared in Alabasta); those snippets of the past, like him talking to people in bars or where he asks Garp whether his life was a good thing makes you reflect on why he had been introduced that way and why he died that way. It makes you think about how all the things he did throughout the story was a means to justify his existence, his life, just to find the answer to the question he voiced out to Garp. And then you add in the memories of ASL, Sabo dying, and Luffy making Ace promise that he wouldn’t die and how that promise may have been considered a small justification of Ace’s life in the sense where he’d live for the sake of his younger brother or what not (but as found, it wasn’t enough for him to stop questioning his life).
    Then when Ace was at the execution platform and everyone came in to save him, Ace is faced with the question “why are these people risking their lives for me?” which is aligned to his initial question of why him being born/his life was a good thing (because both questions demand for a justification of his existence and it’s worth for others to lay down their lives). He goes through a short stage of denial, telling the others to turn back, telling Luffy to get out, which was like asking them to abandon the significance of his life, the very question he had sought out to answer. But when Luffy denies and says he’ll save him because Luffy is his brother, it becomes a hint to the answer he seeks which we find out when he dies, is love. The love that other people have for him is what makes him significant to them. So many things within Marineford allowed him to work up to this realisation, Garp saying “I have no sympathy for pirates but for my family I do”, the Whitebeard pirates telling him to shut his trap and let them save him, and heck even when Whitebeard himself asked Ace if he was a good father to him; he mattered to them, he was loved by them, and that was all the justification they needed to believe that his life was a good thing. And only when he dies is when he fully accepts the answer he searched for and is immensely grateful not just for the love others had given him but for allowing him to find that answer.
    His character development was not something explicit or served on a silver platter, it was something fragmented, messy, and short, a perfect representation of him and also a nice portrayal of him as a character and individual. The fragmented development was enough to have the audience to mourn and sympathise, not just because he was an extension of the main character, or merely Luffy’s older brother, but because he only had realised his dream, his answer to life, at its end, death. Man didn’t die while achieving his dream, he achieved it through death and that’s probably the most heartbreaking and ironic thing about One Piece because there’s the implicit theme of living out/living for your dreams.
    I’m probably overanalysing, and yes Ace is an important plot device but it’s just really sad to find people discount him as a character even after all that happened :((

But I loved Ace as a character, I still feel a sad twinge even now since he died so suddenly, esp as we learn more and more about him. I think we were supposed to evaluate him as a character more so by how many people were willing to die for him, over on screen development.
    Ace hated living in the shadow of his father, and knew at the end simply how happy he was to be loved, and that was a major enough resolution to his conflict. He was loved for being him, not the son of Roger

    At first, I didn't care for Ace. Because of that, I didn't really pay attention to him and more or less concluded that he had been designed to die and "force" Luffy to get stronger.
    Silly me
    Re-reading one piece in order to remember the whole thing and continue where I had stopped a long time ago, I decided to pay a bit more attention to his character. Not because I was looking for a new favorite character, but because people's (sometimes massive) love for him was intriguing.
    I realised that his death didn't only had an impact on Luffy, but also the rest of his crew. Ace's death is the final cement of the crew, of their friendship; their family. It made Luffy want to get stronger in order to protect what he had left : his family. And it drove the Mugiwara - devastated (for a lack of better term? I can't translate my opinion properly) that they weren't there to help their captain - to get stronger as well. (And because of that, I think the crew's composition shouldn't change after that. And if Jinbei joined them, it's just because he was there and lost Ace too. He had his place from the beginning)
    And not only Ace's death affected the Straw Hats, it had a strong impact on the world as a whole : pirates, Marines, random people on random islands, emperors, etc. It gave them all new ambitions, vision of the world, opportunities, and many other things. And above all this; it gave Ace a purpose.
    It didn't turn me into a fangirl; but I'm glad I took the time to think about the character I didn't care about and learned to appreciate him. They all have something to tell if we let them talk after all ^^

      I dont think he is well written at all. we see almost nothing from him, learn nothing of his charakter until after his death. I personaly had no real emotions for his death, because he was a stranger for me. yes, luffy loved him, but we didnt know why, besides him being luffys brother and being cool. only after ace´s death we learn about the connection between the 3 brothers, but by than the time for emotions was gone, ace already died. for me, ace still is just a plot device with some emotions and a good backstory attached to him after his story has ended.
      I dont get why people love him so much other than for being cool, having fire powers and being the only real death in one piece (+ WB ofc).
      how i think Oda could have handled ace way better in my opinion: show the flashback of the brothers BEFORE ace dies. give me the ace novel BEFORE he dies. give me more than 20 panels. that way we have time to develop real emotions for him, to connect with him like luffy did. ace was nothing more than a cool side charakter who happens to have a unimportant relationship with luffy until after marine ford.

      And the plot thing I don't get. If Oda wanted to use Aces death as a plot device Luffy would probably get a powerboost like Goku when he first achieved ssj. (If you haven't watched dbz then Goku's childhood friend Krillin was killed before Goku and Goku was unable to save Krillin. After Krillins death Goku turned ssj). That is a death I would call a plot device but I don't see how Aces death was plot device. Instead of getting a powerboost his brain malfunctioned lmfao. But feel free to explain :)

    I teared up watching this video. “Thank you for loving me.” The Marineford war was probably one of the happiest moments of Ace’s. After living his whole life questioning whether he should have been born, he finally realized the answer to that question and saw how much other people loved him and valued his life and how much his life was able to make other people happy. If I was Whitebeard, I think those words from Ace would make the whole war worth it even in hindsight. Marineford is brilliant in so many ways and alone would make One Piece a masterpiece in my eyes. Congrats on 40k!

  • @galaxyvita2045
    @galaxyvita2045 4 года назад +43

    I do feel ace's character developed but not during the story, rather ace had gone trough his developed before Luffy started his journey.
    We know that when ace set out to sea he was just like Luffy (apart from the heritage) , a unwavering will.
    But the encounter with WB made him think that he wasn't strong enough, and made him give up on his dream.
    So there are 2 importend differences to why Luffy and ace are different, first one is that ace never had a crew like the straw hats.
    We know that the straw hats would rather give up on there own dream than the dream of Luffy.
    And second Luffy never had the burden of his heritage influence him, i think this is a very overlooked characteristic of Luffy.
    With out it he would never have been able to gather the straw hats and turn so many people to his side.
    So ace's inability to let his heritage go made him a unsuitable candidate to be the pirate king.

    I really liked Ace’s character, even before his death because of his fundamental purpose in life ( Did I deserve to live ?) which moved me a lot but also his will to protect his young brother (the “family protection” vibe moved me).
    and all his links with other characters (seeing Luffy going through the impossible to save Ace, Garp crying, all his friends within WB’s crew...) made me empathize even more with him...
    So even if we didn’t knew him a lot before his death, I really enjoyed “the idea” I made of the character: and thus I was really moved by his death.

    Portgas D. Ace was an incredible (recurring) character in One Piece, where it showed his whole life during Luffy's memories of his childhood with Ace. And his young adulthood was the cobblestone of how a better person he became and had a family.
    Sadly...the world (Blackbeard, Akainu, Marines, Impel Down and the ignoramus) took him from us. But Luffy will carry the fire that will never die. The Ds don't fall down without leaving an impact to the world.
    *Suggestion:* Is justified to talk about the Chief of Staff from the Revolutionary Army: Sabo. After him, I would love to hear about "Snake Princess" Boa Hancock.

    Hey there, hope you are doing okay during those hard times Ohara-sensei ! First of all thank you for such a in-depth analysis this is really great work and it was a really pleasure to watch it ;) As for the people who say Ace doesn't have character development well this always kind of makes me laugh xd because well the guy went from being a grumpy lonely orphan to the best polite sunshine big bro and if this isn't evolution then I don't know what it is. Sabo's "death" and the bear incident were obvious turning points for him as a person.
    As for another character analysis what about Sabo? I feel like many people in the fandom misunderstood him, thinking that he is Ace's copy but well bro I can't POSSIBLY agree with this. I mean while his story in Dressorosa provides a satisfaying closure to Ace's death (after all he is the only one who can tell Luffy it wasn't his fault back then) he still is an entirely different character with his own unique relationship with Luffy and his own purpose and personnality.
    Anyway can't wait to see more of your videos and until then saty safe! Wishing you the best ;)

For Luffy to lose his older brother, despite his most desperate efforts, and have the Boa Hancock story, Impel Down, the ENTIRE Marineford War end in that loss is what made the anticipation and ultimate tragic end gut wrenching. Ace’s importance and development in the story, didn’t seem to matter because I knew that he meant a lot to Luffy, therefore he meant a lot to me.

    I now have a deeper understanding of Ace’s death. He is the most inspiring character ever developed in order Luffy to grow & the true meaning of unconditional love. He sacrificed his life for Luffy and WB pirates in order for them to continue to live on. Most importantly, this impacted Luffy’s warrior heart that losing his brother is equivalent losing a world. But, this brought Luffy to grow in order to save the people he cares about, he has to grow stronger and wiser in every battle. Ace will be never be forgotten in everyone’s heart as he captured respect and loyalty towards others. I will always treasure him into my heart forever.
    P/S: Thank you for reading till the end, I couldn’t understood Ace’s death even I’m watching in Waco Arc. But now, I can have a clear understanding why Luffy loves his brother so much. This was a great video, but i think you forgot to mention how Ace not only pushed Luffy through these 2 years of training and development but also his whole crew. You could pretty much feel how his whole crew noticed through what Luffy has to go through and this emotional shock they had, not being abel to help him come over it. They realised how strong Luffy had to be at that time, what gave them the ambition to, at least, try to be as strong as Luffy had to be. It even gave Luffy the chance to tell his crew not to meet, but to train for 2 years and then meet.

It's nice to see more of him and how he started as a pirate, but the way that all of it came either right before and after his death made him give off the air of just a tool for someone else's character development, which wasn't something I was very happy to see.

    I just found your channel today and watched the videos about Nami, Robin and now Ace. I really enjoyed watching them and will keep watching some others.
    I'd love to see a video on Sabo too :)

    I watched one piece anime 5yrs ago and I started dusting it a bit a little while back. Why the f is one piece so deep. All I remember is fights and devil fruits, feels like I watched one piece waaay too casually, saw Ohara's video on chopper and I was like F oda giving new answers for Frankenstein's sorrow, now aces character arc. Guess I'll be spending years uncovering a lot from Ohara's and Mr.Morj's videos and reading manga. Great video 👌

    Damn! That was beautiful. I always did like Ace as a character despite his lack of development and
    SPOILERS! (just in case)
    His death was the 2nd time the series made me cry, with the 1st time being Luffy's breakdown at Sabody after losing his crew. The 3rd was the new opening after Ace's death which felt like a tribute to him. The feels were strong.

    You should do Dalton, King of the Sakura Kingdom, he's a really deep and underrated character, the first zoan user we see, and showed a lot of honor during drum island

    Could you try to make a video about the going merry (kinda like in the usopp video, but deeper or with all important impacts of the merry storywise).
    This would finally break me. I get tears in my eyes far to often from reading one piece, watching scenes (and your videos...lol) or thinking about the last chapter in about 5 years. But the most heartbreaking scene for me personally is the farewell of my beloved merry. It reminds me of my childhood. I can remember the first time watching this episode as a child...maybe 8 to 10 years old in German television. Crying like shit for an imaginary object from a fictional world. And up until the present Im crying each time watching this episode...I know all the dialogs, I see myself watching this scene years ago from the couch of my parents house. And Im very gratefull Oda could make me feel like that.
    If somebody would ask me why Im so in love with OP I would tell this story. The story of an 22 year old guy crying like his juvenile self from years ago for this ship with a sheephead...
    Please Ohara...would love to break up totally into tears by your merry video

    Do a review on Crocodile next. He's quite the complex figure, and has a relation with seemingly every significant figure in the story.

    This phrase is really suitable in this context.

    Dude had like 3 hours of screen time and it hit us like a truck when he died. Ace’s death was impactful for most of us because of how much we care for Luffy. This was Luffys sad arc, we didn’t get flashbacks like the rest of the crew, we lived it.

    I...honestly do not know too well why I am so in love with the story of One Piece. The strength of how well-written its and every character are, the romantic and adventurous world of One Piece, the very intrigue lore and history of many areas we have seen and encountered and still yet to ponder...I find myself having a goal in mind to know how Oda write such a great and wonderful masterpiece.
    I want to learn and gain experience, for a story that I want to one day write, when I know that it is my time to write it.

    Thank you for the video. Do you think Ruffy will face Akainu sometime in the future? How will this act out? Going all out in revange-rage dose not suit Ruffy, but how should he react? Will he fight him, or maybe with him against the world goverment, if the marines revolt after discovering the hidden-truth at the end?

    • @55pm
      @55pm 4 года назад

      Ruffy is the kind of character that is motivated by hatred or act out of revenge, but this time he may change.
      I personally wanna see a situation where akainu somehow fights a greater threat like blackbeard, and its clear that they should team up to have a chance, but luffy faces a huge dilemma, will he put aside his grudge for akainu or go out of his way to fight both?

    I love Ace, but when Sabo was reintroduced as someone with amnesia to basically replace Ace, my first impression of him was mehhhh. I grew to love Sabo. I just dislike amnesia stuff like if Ace is so famous, why didn't Sabo read about him in the newspaper or when Luffy did all the crazy stuff at Enies Lobby? I guess this is nitpicking lol.
    Anyways, great vid. Maybe you can do a Sabo analysis!

    Ace is an incredible character, he shows so much about other characters even when they have little to no interactions with Ace. Recently I've been thinking more about Roger and some controversial aspects of him. Roger is undoubtedly a great pirate, earning himself the "Pirate king" title, but he is not a great father. He is said to be the man with the most freedom on the sea but he took away Ace's freedom, Ace was never free. I'm convinced that Roger wanted Ace to fulfill what he and his crew could not do when discovered Laugh Tale and the truth about the void century. Ace did not inherit Roger's will, Roger's will was forced onto Ace, making Ace question his existence his whole life.
