    Usopp is often purely seen as a source for comedic relief. But Usopp´s character goes actually much deeper than that. Beside his role as a sniper on the straw hat crew, he also has a goal that is focused on character development. In every Usopp fight over the journey, Usopp develops a little further. This video takes a closer look if Usopp is on a good way to become a brave warrior of the sea. This also includes his role as Sogeking.

      A genius inventor, alongside taking care of a garden of plants he uses as his weapons post-time skip, is said to be one of the 3 back-up chefs(along with Nami and Robin) when Sanji can't cook during a QandA with the author, plus does most of the haircuts alongside Robin.
      He likely does the most general care for everything on the ship, as Franky only repairs the ship itself, and Sanji only cooks.

      he know first aid together with nami before chopper joined.

    I love his entire character development, especially in Dressrosa, but what I'm remembering so vividly right now is that moment in Thriller Bark when I thought: "So. You're basically telling me that Sanji can break through a concrete wall with his leg but when he gets a little negative he feels the self worth of a flea? That Zoro can cut steel, but when he gets negative he's on his knees wishing to be dead? That Luffy, of all people Luffy, feels worthless when being negative? But Usopp feels negative 100% of the time and still manages to stand on his legs, exist, think effectively, stand his ground and even find the determination to put up quite a fight? Wow, RESPECT. That's pretty badass." It was really the moment I fell in love with him.

      @@cho9467 You clearly did not understand that arc at all. It was full of fantastic character moments for sanji . If this is SANJI DIDN'T GET NO FIGHTS. One piece is about far far far more than simply beating the shit out of people. Some fans are way way way to over invested in a one piece as only a fighting series. This is not dbz, narrative is more important than the fights, characters are more important. Sanji got what is thus far the third longest arc in the series to revolve around him, saying that he got fucked over by oda is objectively wrong. Brook has never had a significant 1v1 fight and yet he is agreed to be mvp of whole cake island, because of his moments as a character. A segment of the fanbase places far far far too much emphasis on the importance of MUH 1V1s. One piece sets itself from other shonen with great characters, narrative threads, and world building. Most shonen are poorly written with bland characters that are all about simply fighting stronger and stronger enemies. It is a genre for 12 years olds boys after all. One piece has so much more to offer. Basically all great narrative art is great because of story, and characters, not mindless fighting. Bellamy vs luffy is often not seen as a great fight, but it is, bellamy may have been no match, but the fight is great being of the narrative, because of the context behind the fight. Usopp vs luffy is great because of the emotions behind it, usopp never was a match. Boiling down one piece to fighting is a fundamental misunderstanding of this series. I'd grown quite tired of sanji's gag, but WCI made me take him much more seriously as a character.

    To me Ussop is the strongest and most dangerous Mugiwara and has been for over a decade.
    He is not classically strong; he does not appear strong; and physically speaking I am pretty sure everyone else on the crew is stronger than him; but he is mentally strong, He is a Jack of all trades. He pushes forward through pain and depression, and never is gobsmacked. It was Perronnas fight where I decided he was strongest. In One Piece the ability to persist is key. Luffy fell to sadness and Ussop never did, when his mom passed he never stopped and just adjusted his focus. Zorro required re-encouraging as a child to remain on his path. Sanji/Nami/Robin all let their weakened state emotions guide them as did Law. Chopper required Kureihas heavy assist. Franky has never come to good terms from his low point. Jinbei is rather stout in heart and mind, until you realize he runs from his true self and pours it all into others as he sacrifices himself.
    Ussop always overcomes his own self doubt and anxiety; when he needs to.

    All of his fears, in the latest part of the story, are also completely justifiable. He's not a superhuman and he knows that; when he was left alone facing Trebol, he knew that loosing would have meant not only the complete failure of the operation SOP, but it would have also ruined the only chance they have of defeating Sugar. The most rational choice was, of course, running away and wait for help; but Usopp just couldn't leave behind the Tontattas who blindly trusted him.
    Sometimes people really should put away their "Shonen glasses" and try to understand characters' action... In One Piece we are used to see main characters escaping whatever bad situation, but Usopp doesn't know that he's in a Shonen, of course he'll be scared of facing someone like a top commander of one of the most dangerous men in the world. Just give him a break.

      frr i really dont get the hate for characters that blatantly show their anxiety and is deemed cowardly in shounen terms, i think theyre essential to develop this realism bc we're so used to overpowered characters that sometimes people fail to relate to or even find a more in depth enjoyment to the story. it is pretty tiring seeing the same generic structure of characters nowadays so usopp's journey with the strawhats is so refreshing and ultimately became one of my fave fictional characters

    The Dressrosa moment holds a special place in my heart for another reason.
    Robin was completely forgotten, and therefore, Usopp's act of Bravery in Enies Lobby was forgotten too. At that moment, Robin wasn't the only one who disappeared, Sogeking was too. Because Sogeking existed just because of Robin. Usopp essentially lost a very important part of himself that day, a part of himself that represents his bravery and what he wants to be.
    So him coming forth and taking on Sugar despite that is made even more impressive when you realize that Usopp was pretty much back at square one. He didn't only take back robin and the other toys, he had a personal reason to fight Sugar, to take back his Bravery.

    In the entirety of One Piece so far, I only had 3 times, 3 times where I shivered out of reverence for a character.
    The first time was in logue town where captain smoker held his monologue, talking about luffy, right after he escaped death.
    The second and third time were on thriller bark where zoro jumped into the ball of pain
    And when usopp faced against perona.
    I felt a massive amount of respect for usopp for fighting against perona, because him being the only one who can fight her actually shows the unlimited amount of willpower usopp really possesses.
    When everyone else were hit by the negative hollow, they were incapable of fighting. Even someone with as much will as zoro or fighting spirit as luffy, at that moment were utterly defeated.
    People remember these scenes because of their comedic value, but I remember these scenes for the mad respect.
    Being, as someone who suffers from massive anxiety and depression myself, I fully understand the extend of what it can do to you.
    And seeing as people as stubborn as luffy and zoro were unable to stand up again, after they felt this fear, yet usopp, who always feels depressed, afraid and anxious fight on, truly shows that on a pure level of will itself, usopp is in fact the strongest nakama within the straw hats

Usopp gets overlooked and left behind by many fans, but what you just stated and explained in this video really shows what’s great about him. Time and time again he overcomes his battles. Inner battles and physical battles. He might not be the strongest and will probably never be. He is a lot of comic relief often, but just like you said he is more than that. Thank you for this! I've been telling people that Usopp's character has progressed along the way but all they can retort is "He's still a coward!". They don't even realized what's the difference of his cowardice then and now. As a person who also deals with anxiety and always run away from my problems, I see where Usopp is coming from. I even envy him for overcoming it in the course of time. But at the same time, he inspires me to be courageous. I am amazed how Oda handled his character. Usopp is the most cowardly but also the most courageous. And what's more? These two aspects of him coexist well in him. Like how did Oda even do it? That if we think about cowardly and bravery, Usopp always come to mind. His character feels real cos in reality, people don't stop being scared. People always have fears, even if they overcome one, another fear will emerge. And Usopp is the representation of that one aspect of human nature.

      oda does it by putting usopp in different situations, every time usopp overcomes a fear the next island it's always more dangerous , also by making his progress realistic tangible and slow, he doesn't completely change in 1 episode

    • @rejjinna5947
      @rejjinna5947 5 лет назад +11

      @@eslamanwar1171 Exactly! Usopp and other strawhat's developments make more sense unlike other manga/anime whose characters change 180 degrees right after an incident that has major effect on them. Oda handled it better with Luffy tho. Luffy was depressed for his brother's death. His character that time took a 180 change. But that's natural for someone who witnessed his brother's death in flesh. However, Luffy didn't stay depressed and got angry in the world. He coped up quickly cos that's who he is. He can bounce back everytime he falls.
      I also loved how Oda handled Usopp's character. Since Arlong Park, Usopp is always insecure of his role in the crew and anxious of his capabilities. And I'm glad Oda finally addressed his insecurity and anxiety in W7. Oda didn't suddenly put Usopp in that situation so that he can create an internal conflict. He built it up since Usopp joined the crew. The reason why the internal conflict is organic and isn't out-of-place.... and more heartbreaking. Oda is definitely a master in handling his characters.

Usopp on the other hand cant risk dying like Luffy can because he still yearns to develop his own character. While they both have something to prove, Luffy is already the man he is supposed to be, while Usopp still has to prove to himself that he can be a brave warrior.

    The brilliance of having Usopp and Robin leave the crew in Water 7 is just masterful. The crew is brought to their lowest point. It condenses the story perfectly while maximizing the stakes. First, the drama of Merry which brings the need for a real shipwright, a role Usopp had fulfilled to the best of his ability. Second, it contrasts the two crew members who left. Robin leaves because she fears she'll be thrown away by the Straw Hats because of the danger she poses. Usopp leaves because he fears he'll be thrown away because of his perceived weakness and uselessness. Third, it weaves in the World Government which up to this point was just a background threat that consisted of somewhat good guys with a sense of reasonable justice to our knowledge (Coby, Smoker, Tashigi) who were willing to work with pirates against a bigger threat. Could you imagine if Usopp and Robin leaving the crew had been broken up into two separate arcs in the story?

    The scene where Usopp is told that the Merry can’t be repaired is such a powerful moment. In denial, he compares himself to the ship, speculating that it’s only a matter of time before he gets replaced too. Oda’s writing really broke the mold here as Usopp questions how much he will sacrifice to become pirate king. Even Luffy, a typical Shonen protagonist with relentlessly unchanging core values, is forced to rethink his choices. It is such a pivotal point in the journey of the straw hats which later helps reinforce the role of each crew member and gives Luffy a new perspective into what it truly takes to be a captain.

    You make good points with Usopp and Luffy's relationship. I just finished re-reading East Blue and Luffy's got this great line before Syrup Village gets attacked "There's someone on this island that I care about." The whole "captain usopp" aspect of his personality is important because it gives relatability to Luffy's. He decided very early on to recruit Usopp mainly because he's Yassop's son but also because he totally likes him as a buddy. At that point Nami and Zoro were more like co-workers. Zoro has had moments where he expresses doubts Luffy's pirate-kingship, one of which being in water 7.
    Usopp's speech to the Tontatta was a great moment in my eyes. Really does a good job reflecting upon Luffy's iconic "pirates not heroes" speech. It's honestly a shitheaded moment that rounds out Usopp's "somewhat decent guy" character.

    There's even a scene at heart of gold where Luffy, Zoro, Sanji and Usopp sensed an approaching enemy while the other members doesn't seem to notice it. Though it's in a movie and probably wasn't canon, it shows how great Usopp had progressed

    Usopp's always been my favorite straw hat and character in this series. Yeah I can understand that people find him annoying and weak but a lot of that is also what makes his character compelling and great. Can't wait to see what he gets to do in Wano.

  • @huntermyers974
    @huntermyers974 5 лет назад +4

    Although sanji is my favorite character I think ussop is the best character because he is a afraid and physically weaker and more susceptible to injury, like in alabasta, so those moments of overcoming the enemy or obstacle using his strength and beating his fear has a lot of emotional impact and enjoyment

    Usopp really grew on me after watching the anime and reading the manga a lot of times. The more I go back, I notice how amazing his character is. Not that I did not appreciate his character from the first time, its just you see subtle things in the story that makes Usopp a wonderful character. A character not only there as a comedic relief.
    He is currently TOP 1 for me. That's God Usopp for you!!
    I'm also excited as to what will unfold on the current arc. Especially, since this will be his first official fight after dressrosa (I hope?)

    By the way, I'd also mention the moment usopp is about to shoot sugar with the scary painting, when he gets kind of a "flashback" into the future, which would make him scared but he just bravely shakes it off and then awakens his haki. That was a really cool moment

    There is a theory that Usopp is actually telling this story to his GrandChildren about the time he was a Pirate working for the (now dead) Pirate King and thats why it's so exagerated.

    • @flusel4949

      I like this theory, but wouldn't Usopp make himself look cooler from the start? Unless he realized as he grew older what we allready know: that it's not about being fearless but about facing and overcoming your fears. So in the story he eventually tells his grandchildren he actually portrays himself quite realistically.

    Luffy is never afraid. He's always determined, always confident, never doubts that he *will* reach his dreams and overcome every obstacle in his path. Luffy is inspiring, but he's never afraid, and thus he never overcomes his fears.

    • @LitOwl93
      @LitOwl93 5 лет назад +12

      Luffy is afraid. He is afraid of losing his friends. To Luffy the ultimate goal is not the physical treasure, it's the journey. As two dimensional as he may seem, one thorough look to his character arc is evident to show you how much he loves his friends.

Usopp doesn't doubt one bit to stood up in front of kizaru and shoot him to protect his friend, even if it did no damage, he overcame his coward self at least for one moment when someone else was in danger.

    What I admire the most about usopp is that, for knowing fear so well, he knows exactly how someone's fears can be used as weapon. He oftens defeat his enemies using their fears! It's something that only he does in the entire anime, other than simply attacking physically

    I can’t wait till the do my man’s usopp right! I love that character. His time skip design is soooooo fire. I know he’s going to become a badass at on point. Hope they kick his coward trait. Now imagine if we get a backstory to usopp’s dad and he’s was the exact same way. I love Yasopp as a character so bad ass so confident, when he told Luffy he can shoot an antenna off an ant, sooooo bad asss!
