what if monster point was actually a part of choppers awakening? because he has the Human-Human fruit I believe that his awakening lets him turn to any species of human like the long arm tribe or the giant tribe (monster point) and probably in the future even the tribe which oars the continental puller belong to.
I really liked Chopper's diverse fighting style before timeskip but now whenever a fight breaks out he instantly changes onto kongfu point or the monster point. That's the thing I hate the most about chopper now. My favourite chopper fighting moments were Franky house raid and enis lobby.
Chopper might actually be able to awaken Armament Haki and Observation Haki (like Usopp did in Dressrosa), same goes for Nami (which was already interesting due to her ability to feel a change in the atmosphere allowing her to predict a twister or any dangerous weather condition) she might need to learn armament Haki as well and i believe that she might awaken the Conqueror's Haki due to her long exposition to Big Mom's Vivre Card and Luffy's Straw Hat, it would actually be nice that Oda show some of the crew member training with each other in order to learn haki (maybe Jinbei will help)!

Exactly and that label is just bs anyway. I only follow with the dub but I've looked into many things people complained about Chopper being one of them. But constantly I'm finding myself questioning what the hell people are whinning about. Chopper's still a very important member of the crew and Oda clearly still sees him that way. In terms of fights well thankfully I'll get to see more arcs for the dub but Chopper very effortlessly joined the rest of the crew in curbstomping the new fishman pirates.
@RJ DA this may be true, but that's not all he is. The monster point is proof of that. That's not exactly the cutest monster design I've ever seen. I personally find it very important to understand each strawhat and why they are the way they are, and while this video has a good point about choppers development being stunted somewhat, he's still a well-written and valuable character just like all the rest. Sometimes the best thing a story can do is give characters different perspectives and problems. Imagine if all the strawhats were written exactly like zoro. Wouldn't be as interesting, I think. Anyway I've rambled for too long but my point is to look beyond the surface of how these characters come across and recognize the care that oda puts into them
@@Elliementary99 I'm a little late to this conversation, but I totally agree with you, and would like to add that the whole mascot argument completely falls flat when you think about the rest of the crew. Franky is a living embodiment of a character made for merch, as is Nami and Robin, who are unreasonably attractive. Yet very few people complain about that aspect of their characters, and Robin regularly ranks near the top of people's favorite Straw Hats. Appearances should and do take a backseat to character personality and development, so in my opinion the real reason why Chopper has fallen so low on the Straw Hat popularity list is unlike Nami and Robin, he has not been relevant story-wise since punk hazard. Even though it was minor, Robin got some attention in Dressrosa, aa did Franky and Usopp, and in WCI, Nami, Brook, and Jinbei got their moments. Sanji and Zoro are part of the big three so they don't need to be in the story to carry popularity, similar to Shanks and Blackbeard. So that leaves us with only one crew member who has neither been a big or small part of any arc since Punk Hazard, and even then his shining moment was for his doctor side, not his warrior/monster side. This has already been rectified in Wano, and it seems like it will continue to be as does onto in that arc. Btw, I'm not counting Chopper's healing if the Mink's in Zou because it's extremely short and doesn't really add anything to his character. Chopper's backstory is one of my favorites from the Straw Hats, as was his origin arc. I know a lot of fans like myself have been waiting a very long time for our reindeer boy to get his moment, but to everyone who's complaining that he's dead-ended or lazily written, I say, have patience. Oda is juggling new strawhats (Jinbei and Carrot/Yamato?), a highly anticipated saga that sets up endgame, Sanji's renewed character development, and Luffy's rise to true leadership and power. I'm fine with Chopper taking a backseat to all that because I trust Oda to deliver his moment eventually. Hell, he already has. The healing of all the plagued allies and enemies through the face nuke and his extremely happy face having done that is possibly his best doctor moment post-timeskip. The addition of his slapping Queen in monster point only made it sweeter. Now we just need to see him go all out.
People need to understand that while One piece is a shonen show, Chopper's role and morals as a person are not linked towards violence. As a matter of fact, that is the exact reason why people underestimate him, which is absolutely rude. Chopper is a doctor, and as a doctor, he is NOT actually supposed to kill. But because he's a pirate, and also wasn't really trained in an institutional setting, he's not so sheltered that he wouldn't be able to mesh with the straw hats, which is why he's developed fighting skills. But he's someone who clearly isn't naturally drawn to fighting. Unlike Sanji, Zoro, or Luffy. The issue with people like Chopper or Nami is that their skills aren't really focused on in the show. It isn't until certain moments that we get to see them really shine. Like when chopper is able to detect the issues with the kids on Punk Hazard, or when he saves Luffy in Wano from the poison. Nami really got her moment when the straw hats went up the Knock up stream, because she was the only one who's abilities could have gotten them up there. That's when you can see their skills really shine. (chopper will also be more helpful on onigashima, but you will see later) That's why I'd love to see chopper's medical skills become more relevant, since that's what his speciality is. (which will happen haha, if you want to know, read the manga!)
Roger had an incurable disease when he was executed. Theory: At some point in the future Luffy will be struck with the same "incurable" disease and chopper will have to use all his knowleage to cure Luffy, and realise his dream.

All the straw hats will have their moment to shine in Wano. And let's be clear here..I think Chopper's final mission will be the most important one,and that is to save Luffy's life. There will be parallels between Roger and Luffy.. Crocus wasn't able to do anything for Roger. Chopper will be able to. This my belief. Chopper has a lot of room to grow,into the man who will save Luffy's life.

I never fully understood problem many people have with time skip Monster Point. While 'original' Monster Point was something that nailed me to my chair (a sentiment shared almost universally, I believe), it was not something that could ever last. Not without loosing it's meaning. As it was pointed in video, Chopper's struggle was internal. The Straw Hats, and by extension, the viewers, never really saw him as a monster. We percieved him as this sweet, good-hearted eager kid that just wanted to help everyone. This is why Monster Point was terryfying - not just because of it's fantastic, creepy design, or that terryfying roar (sweet merciful baby jesus, that roar...) - but because it was truly a breaking point. We only saw that scary Monster Point twice - at Enies Lobby, and when Kuma separated the crew. Two arguably lowest points of Straw Hat's career. It emphasized the point. When we've seen it. it was not just some strong technique or attack. It was death of an innocence on screen. When we watched Chopper turn into that thing, out of desperation and fear for his friends, it was not unlike seeing a child drafted to a war - it's goal was to be dark, and it suceeded. And what would happen, if Chopper would turn into that Monster over and over? It would loose it's meaning. It would no longer be a sign of proverbial excrement hitting the fan, it would simply become... a power up. And in turn, it would rob any previous appearences into a power up, deprived of meaning - a sickness appearent in more than one title within the genre. And to me? Post Time Skip Monster Point is symbolic. It is a monument of growth Straw Hats have undergone. In washing away the horror of Monster Point, I see that they remember their past, but grown and became seasoned. They are now in control of their fate, not at it's mercy, and are no longer forced to go into that desperte,dark place to win.
Drakhesh Well, I do see what you mean. At the same time, I don’t think your taking in mind that as time goes on in the story...the characters are getting stronger. Him being able to turn into the Monster Point and control it, is a good thing. It shows that he also grows as a character in the story.
My problem with it is the chopper overcoming monster point should not have been done off screen. This is a huge moment for the character of him overcoming one of his biggest fears we should have been their for it.

Chopper still needs some dope fight. I loved his fight in Ennies Lobbies and he almost killed Hogbak in Thriller Bark.I feel like him struggling with his monster side and cotton lover side would be very interesting
He accepted he's monster side. On Fishman Island he showed to control Monster point and said after he's new heavy point seen by Zoro that he wanted to be a human to have friends. Now he wants to be a monster whose useful to Luffy. Also I think a way to give him more depth is that if he has to fight one of his patients in order to save the strawhats. Since he is still a teen that would be a huge burden to carry since it would go against his core principles.
I read a theory where Chopper develops a new transformation that can even be compared to kaido. I think it's a bit exagerated ahahaha but I'd love to see a big jump on his powers and personality
Idea for Chopper’s Moral Character Arc: Chopper believes that he’s curing someone, when in actuality he’s prolonging their inevitable death. When the character dies, Chopper gets deeply depressed and basically shuts himself from everyone, and during this time others need his help, but he can’t bring himself to do it. Eventually he overcomes this depression, has newfound confidence in his skill as a doctor and realizes not all wounds that can be healed are physical and he learns to deal with the psychological aspects of being a doctor. Oh and of course, the character that dies is closely related to Chopper and someone he considers a deep friend, maybe Luffy considering how many times he uses his gear changes and how that’s been told to affect his lifespan.
Chopper already acknowledges psychological aspects as a doctor. His first mentor was like that remember. He was taught by it. The only psychological problem Chopper has to learn is his. Im bad at english
i've always been fascinated by Chopper and i feels like some people underestimate him as a character. for one, he is incredibly intelligent for his invention of the Rumble Ball. the devil fruit is one of the core concept of One Piece, it remains unchanged through out the course of the story. Vegapunk, the ultimate genius expands upon it's concept by creating artificial devil fruits as well as somehow implement them on objects. but Chopper is the only person that got the balls to mess with his devil fruit power and changed it, a power that is mostly feared by normal people. all zoans fruit got 3 stages of transformation and an awaken form, but Chopper somehow manipulate it to be 6 forms, as well as his Monster form which is probably the awaken devil fruit form. that is unheard of in the world of One Piece! thanks to the fact that he is so cute and sweet, the Government haven't pay much attention to him at all. but if they knew about what he is able to do, i think his bounty would sky rocket and be the prime target to capture alive.

Good video, but your criticism that Chopper lacks a moral need ignores a major facet of his character. Besides his journey to find acceptance, Chopper must learn to step out from the Straw Hats' shadows. From his introduction to the crew, he has acted as the child figure of the crew, taking lessons from the rest and having a simpler understanding of the world compared to them. In arcs like Alabasta, he plays second fiddle to Usopp, and, in Water 7, he doesn't understand Luffy and Usopp's conflict. However, in the New World, he has begun to act as a "father figure," for the lack of a better word. See his conflict to help the children of Punk Hazard or his battle in the Mirror World where he is to Carrot what Usopp was to him two years ago. Now look back to Water 7, where Usopp showcased his moral need. Instead of representing morals of his own, he stayed on the sidelines and had to comprehend his family's internal conflict. Compare this to his captain, who also has lacked much of a moral need throughout the story (excluding the stuff from Sabaody which was less moral and more psychological anyway). And who knows? As Chopper grows into an adult, he may eventually have some similar conflict, although I doubt it considering that the story seems to be "wrapping up." I find your claim that Chopper is the only Straw Hat who had a major character arc prior to the timeskip baffling. We may have different ideas of what a major character arc is, but, in the 600-ish chapters prior to the timeskip, I've at least recorded major character arcs from Luffy, Usopp, and Robin. Sure, their arcs may not have been wrapped up in a tidy bow, but neither has Chopper's. Anyway, I'd still rank Chopper as my least favorite Straw Hat, but that means very little when you're discussing the cast of one of the greatest manga ever conceived. He serves an important role in the crew narratively and thematically, and Oda still has many opportunities to continue to flesh him out before the end of the story. I have hope.

My argument here rather is, that chopper completed a complete character arc, that usually spans over the entirety of a story 🦊 i hope this clears things up a bit
@@Ohara-the-Fox I see you've been taking some points from John Truby's "The Anatomy of Story". Which is good, but I would also recommend checking out K.M. Weiland's Book Creating Character Arcs" in which she goes over the different types of character arcs. The types of arcs a character gets can shift over the course of the story. It should also be noted that when an arc spans the course of an entire story it's called an "Overarching" Character Arc.
What i've always believed for a while is that his giant monster point is actually his awakened devil fruit form, like the prison guards in impel down. Somehow he's able to tap into it using the rumble ball. With some more character development and battles with stronger enemies I reckon he'll be able to tap into it without a rumble ball all together by the end of the series. I'm willing to bet his giant monster point would be stronger too as his body has matured enough to utilise the full potential of it. Man I hope he becomes a literal beast by the end of the series.
That would be really nice. I feel he's in for it too because he hasn't really had a whole lot of time to shine for quite some time. Nor has he had a power up either. I could see Chopper getting pummeled by some headliner, but unlocking armament at the last minute.

We also need to remember that Chopper is only 17 years old meaning he is still starting to learn from the world around him and he has still a lot of growing up to do despite the time skip

Chopper is like Shikimaru/Shikadai in Naruto/Boruto. A strategist. Even a doctor is a strategist also. An excellent chess player in battle, that is what chopper will be. He is the best transforming beast there is. Looking forward to Chopper vs a Beast pirate.
The thing that bugs me about Chopper is how Oda kind of neglects the fact Chopper is a doctor. For example, people are theorizing that chopper is gonna cure Big Moms hunger pangs, and that would be a really good part of the story, but that wasn't even hinted in the slightest. Especially when Chopper spent so much time with her now in Wano. I get he is scared of her but for someone who believes doctors need to cure anyone he didn't even show a hint of interest in Big Moms condition, and I think thats kind of out of character for him. Also when Law was first introduced as an important character in Punk Hazard, and a doctor, they didn't even have some kind of significant exchange about it. Chopper is still SHOWN as a doctor, like when he treats Luffys injuries and when he helps the people of Zou, but what I really want is for some big part in the story to be dedicated to his role as a doctor, like a new dillema or development.

Imagine, Chopper is captured by a couple Celestial Dragons and they keep him as a pet or what have you. Beating him up with the other slaves. He see's the slaves being killed and beaten before him as he escapes, and he has a realization: "I spent all this time... trying to be a human.... trying not to be a monster... but, some humans... are REAL monsters..." before killing both Celestial Dragons and getting an insane bounty.
I think it would have the same side effect of eating two devil fruits, especially that SMILEs aren't even stable, so I would say there would be even more consequences
Chopper is my favorite character the first few arcs after recruiting him I thought he was pretty strong then Oda decided to start writing him more cowardly up until enis when he goes beast mode. He has so much potential but as you said he tends to turn into a mascot even though he has great fighting potential
I hope not. Enru was OP lighting but weak to Earth type and Sir Crocodile was weak to Water because he was Earth type, if Kaido turns out to have a Similar Weakness, I will be so mad. Must be a team effort to beat Kaido, not just some new ability like 5th Gear or Advanced Haki.

I want to add something. It's not that the perspectives are different that there is suddenly conflict. The goals can be the same and perspectives will differ, that's what makes us human. What can and does in fact create conflict is a difference in the desired outcome of reaching said goal. Let me clarify both so it's almost painfully clear for those who have difficulty seeing it through my perspective. Say we both want an apple. Our goal is then that apple. My perspective on why I need it is because it's healthy and will help me maintain a healthy lifestyle. Yours is simply because it's delicious, if it was not, you wouldn't eat it. The outcome then is also different but not inherently at odds with eachother. However, if My desired outcome is to be healthy and yours is to not let me have that same apple, we suddenly come to conflict. Your perspective is still because you find it delicious. But your desired outcome is directly at odds with mine. To give a more topical example, look at luffy vs blackbeard. Both desire the one piece, Both perspectives are to be free, but ones desired outcome is to not have to answer to anyone and the other is to take hold of the world as they see fit. Both perspectives and goals match but the desired outcome is different. Just some food for thought. Thought I'd add a little extra perspective on the matter ^^
I just got into One Piece last year and Chopper won me with his cuteness. I have plushies and accessories of him too. Now as I get to know him more as a character, I look forward to the next time for him to shine.
Ive always thought Tony Tony Chopper was such an amazing character. First he was a reindeer for 7 years of his life. Then upon eating the human human fruit, he instantaneously gains the intellect of a human. After seeing how cruel life can be first hand by being ostracized, he is then raised by a man whose beliefs are almost purely idealistic. Being raised by idealism, he is then shown how tragic that can be without proper knowledge, and is then raised by possibly the greatest doctor in the world. And im assuming he has a very high IQ as it could be argued that is the true focus of the Human Human Fruit.
I love Chopper and feel that he suffers from the "forgotten Beast" Syndrome. Most beast types in media are tossed to the wayside once they're introduced. Nanaki from FF7, Khamarhi from FF10, Sajin from Bleach, ect. Chopper could be Hella useful! On Whole-cake Island (hell ANYWHERE) Chopper could've set up an animal spy-net to counter Big Mom. Chopper (AAAALL the strawhats actually) should actively seek out power! With Chopper's animal instinct and transformations he should strive for observation and Armament Haki and make some kind of NINJA POINT or and extremely fast form
I think you misunderstand choppers role in the story post-timeskip, pre-timeskip he has a child trying to conquer self-doubt and become more mature, post timeskip chopper is there to help guide children to become more mature like him, case and point the children on punk hazard or momo during dressrosa, this could also lead to chopper helping to guide Big Mom to become a better person in the future as well. To explain more maybe you should check out Craftsdwarf's channel he really helped me think about many characters in a different light including chopper :)

Well it would have been, if he ever actually hurt anyone with it. So the opportunity was there, it just never happened. And I think, since it's something he doesn't have any control over, isnt it more a phsyical thing?
I think the next step for chopper and the rest of the crew, is to learn haki. Luffies crew is most set up like shanks right? All his crew is A tear at least. Ussop got it in dressrosa, brook worked with something very close to conquerors (debatable I know), but I really think the rest of the crew will learn haki. Whatever the case I really want chopper to be treated as a main character again.

So I'm really interested in what's going to happen to Chopper, and was thrilled to see someone else is thinking deep about this. Because you're absolutely right - Chopper has had an entire character arc and has stopped developing, which makes him an outlier in the crew. Unless a new ceiling is introduced, Chopper will become a static character. It's not always a bad thing, but more often than not it just makes a character boring, which is what we're experiencing post time skip. I think a lot of potential new ceilings have been introduced, such as the Leadership qualities you pointed out. However that can become a double edged sword - if Chopper becomes too much of a leader, then he won't fit with the crew again, much like when Usopp was struggling with his place in the crew. Entirely hypothetically, a leader arc could knock Chopper out of the crew, temporarily or permanently. Not the same way Usopp went out, but willingly - like Jinbe. With his relationship to Carrot being "big-brothery" and Pedro’s death, we might be getting a glimpse of another role he could take on, which would be foreshadowed by his own previous character arc. That is, a leader on Zou - whose people generally seem to be thought of as slaves or monsters, similar to the Fishmen. And since his morals are pretty ironclad, I doubt we'll see them challenged, which takes away the potential for that kind of character arc. I doubt it would happen, but it would be interesting - and create new struggle for the Straw Hats that’s internal rather than external.

Also, franky is probably going to be your hardest character analysis because he's very much got setup for big things in the future but in my book there's nothing fix about other more interactions with the crew and more recognition.
I feel like they have been foreshadowing a lot of great "power-up" fights where everyone in wano will get into a fight and grow immensely in the process.
It’s just when you have such a HUGE cast in the most recent arks I think Oda wasn’t able to give Chopper his moment, or unless his time is coming it’s just a slow change that gets overshadowed by other stuff.

Bobby what he taught each of those okamas they had okama karate and each one he beat he got a recipe for food that would then help the straw hats...and when he wasn’t fighting he was Running all day and night that strengthens your legs quite a bit...and since he already had some pretty beast legs it only makes since that running and kicking everyday with them would make them stronger but you could get all that from the episodes about his time skip im just sayin
Chopper is actually one of my favorite or my favorite straw hat, then sanji then luffy. But yeah I think Chopper is fine as a character but I do agree they aren't doing much with him.
That may be why he got the role of taking care of big mom. He's also the best among the group with his "innocent kindness" for this kind of job too I believe. Other than Carrot I suppose lol.
I see Chopper as a vital part of the Strawhats. His internal struggle is easily seen and felt by anyone who has struggled in the same way. I see some of myself in him.
Chopper lacks a basic identity of himself. He goes with whatever the flow is. That makes him characters that is invisible. Though chopper is a doctor he doesn't have something that other doctor don't have as a doctor. He is an addon character to fill the space.

There was that theory before, that the are chapters called "The First", "The Second" or smth like that, which are the chapters were the SH members become truly members of the crew. And IIRC Choppers number is missing there. Robins does as well.

I believe Chopper will have another character arc when they clash with Blackbeard since Blackbeard was the one to “free” the drum kingdom from Walpol months before the Strawhats got there. I also notice that Luffy told Sanji that he heard when he was a kid that people from snowy islands don’t sleep, I think that this little fact is related to Blackbeard.

Everytime i see someone get hurt i instantly think of chopper being that doctor who can help heal them out of the goodness of his heart so the fact that he can back that up proves to me hes already the perfect character other than being strong enough to take down one of the 4 Emperors main crewmen like say perosperos from the bigmom pirates but just like how zoro told usopp to focus on doing what he does best in enies lobby i always tell myself chopper doesn’t need to be emperors busting strong but yeah chopper is one of my top 3 strawhats
Franky literally started the SH's involvement with Doflamingo on Dressrosa... And hes the one who distracted and been the bait to allow the dwarfs and gang to infiltrate Sugar's base... and fought Senor Pink.
Beckham Pang Sadly Franky ended up being overshadowed by Senior Pink himself in that fight. And when a characters been reduced to “bait” being one of their moments... that’s kinda sad.
His 'arc' got resolved at introduction, being accepted by a group of people, except that he was already accepted by two in the past. All the timeskip did was Flanderize him, which in his case made him more child-like. The arc he needed in my view was one in which he forged his own identity, but instead he became the very mascot that his wanted poster made him out to be.
Seeing more development for Chopper in Wano would be a treat, being able to follow the Strawhat's growth over decades is one of my favorite parts of One Piece. SPOILERS FOR WANO BELOW . . . I hope to see him in a position where he must lead/protect Tama and Momo while Luffy and the others fight in the prison mine and maybe get separated from Luffy or have to lead another mission with one of the Nine Red Scabbards or Luffy.
Monster Point WAS Chopper's moral need. He knew that if he didn't gain control of himself, he was going to hurt someone he cared about. That insecurity was always there, because although they liked him as he was, they had never seen his true "monster self". Mastering Monster Point over the timeskip was his need, and even though we didn't see his journey to it, it was still a very important part of his character.
I believe Chopper will fight Queen instead of Sanji. I think after what happened to the people of Wano with the smile fruits and Queens plague bullets affecting the prisoners, it will push him over the top helping him to beat Queen. This will also push his bounty higher and place him under Luffy on the crew shocking everyone. I can see Oda doing this to troll us all 😂
I want chopper have a new bounty for his monster point which he gets a atleast 100 million+ bounty and a new nickname like...idk "wendigo" or something like that that cherishes the monster part of him aswell rather than being the cute cotton candy lover, he could be the monster that he avoided to become but now wants to be to help luffy
I really love everyone in the crew including those who didn't stay or not officially part of the crew such as Vivi or Carrot. The only thing that I want chopper to have is a good fight with someone quite formidable and beat them so that the world will be able to recognize him as not just as a mascot or a pet but someone who's a great asset within the Strawhats capable of fighting side by side with them.
Pre-Ts Chopper was a bit more interesting, but I love the way Post-Ts Chopper said that he had become a monster physically so he could be stronger for his friends. It was such a perfect change... Can't wait for Chopper to become a total boss.
Now that you lay it out like that it makes so much sense. Everybody on that boat has their quirks, Chopper being all cute shouldn't stop him from being an interesting character that everybody can appreciate, I've read many people on Reddit downgrading him to a cute fluff pet and nothing more and now I'm sure of the real reason. I really hope Oda-sensei is planning something more for him, as you have suggested, and recover the respect of every OP fan, I wish when that happens it will finally reflect properly on his bounty. Who knows, maybe Oda-sensei sort of had it planned for a long time so when the situation changes, it comes as a big shock.
Spoilers*** After coming back to this video after the end of Wano - it’s a bit disappointing to see that everyone’s thought of him doing something special combat wise during the battle of Onigashima is all but mute… he does save all the Ice Oni and greatly contributes to the success of the Samurai and everyone in the main hall- though not the Level up per say that everyone wants…
I say that's the greatest thing about One Piece that all the characters are going through different arcs that fit their age and Chopper's leadership quality is gonna be needed if he wants to be a doctor able to cure any disease.
I feel like one thing that would've made Chopper's character more compelling, and unique, was if Oda had made him hate his Devil Fruit powers. We've never had a character downright hate the abilities they've been given - everyone sees it as a boon - but Chopper grew up hated by both his herd and humans because of the differences his power provides so him hating his powers would've been a logical next step. He could've developed the rumble ball as a way to make any given transformation permanent in an attempt to stop his fruit from working, and accidentally found monster point organically that way as well. This would clash nicely with Luffy, whose powers make him as much of an anomaly as Chopper, yet Luffy fully embraces it. His character arc would've still been him growing to accept his place as a "monster" but it would now also have the added element of him accepting what his Devil Fruit has made him become. This could've culminated in Zou, where he finally meets others like him. I wonder what this kind of Chopper would think of Wano and the Smile Fruits - users who deliberately deform themselves all to gain animal-like abilities. Smiles seem like the ultimately culmination of everything Chopper hates.
I like Chopper but I think that if his only purpose is to be a mascot he failed. His moments as an "adult" are cool but I hope there's more to come. I prefer though that Oda focuses on Sanji ^^ and maybe let Chopper have his big nice fight like Franky and Señor Pink
Good point about Chopper showing leadership characteristics... the thing about post time-skip Chopper is that, his greatest moments (unlike most protagonists) are not feats of battle but medical feats, which exactly work towards his development and his struggle to fulfill his dream. His biggest moments , as a DOCTOR (for that is his role in the crew) are post time -skip and we have watched him leading, educating and curing in Punk-Hazard, in Zou and in Wano. Those are some tremendously epic moments if seen by the viewpoint of "medical" feats, and this is something that can be applied to any member of the crew according to their roles (for example, the epic cake that Sanji created in Whole-cake arc that was a fabtastic victory / moment for his character as a cook and in harmony with his dreams, even if not a fighting moment) my point is, we should see strawhats' development from the viewpoint of their role in the crew and not only fighting (which is yhe hravy poiny of interest, one piece being a shonen) I mean look at him the *man* is averting whole genocides and developing vaccines and educatung other doctors on the spot!! in that regard, he could easily be seen as one of the coolest members

what if monster point was actually a part of choppers awakening? because he has the Human-Human fruit I believe that his awakening lets him turn to any species of human like the long arm tribe or the giant tribe (monster point) and probably in the future even the tribe which oars the continental puller belong to.
I really liked Chopper's diverse fighting style before timeskip but now whenever a fight breaks out he instantly changes onto kongfu point or the monster point. That's the thing I hate the most about chopper now. My favourite chopper fighting moments were Franky house raid and enis lobby.

Chopper might actually be able to awaken Armament Haki and Observation Haki (like Usopp did in Dressrosa), same goes for Nami (which was already interesting due to her ability to feel a change in the atmosphere allowing her to predict a twister or any dangerous weather condition) she might need to learn armament Haki as well and i believe that she might awaken the Conqueror's Haki due to her long exposition to Big Mom's Vivre Card and Luffy's Straw Hat, it would actually be nice that Oda show some of the crew member training with each other in order to learn haki (maybe Jinbei will help)!

Exactly and that label is just bs anyway. I only follow with the dub but I've looked into many things people complained about Chopper being one of them. But constantly I'm finding myself questioning what the hell people are whinning about. Chopper's still a very important member of the crew and Oda clearly still sees him that way. In terms of fights well thankfully I'll get to see more arcs for the dub but Chopper very effortlessly joined the rest of the crew in curbstomping the new fishman pirates.
@RJ DA this may be true, but that's not all he is. The monster point is proof of that. That's not exactly the cutest monster design I've ever seen. I personally find it very important to understand each strawhat and why they are the way they are, and while this video has a good point about choppers development being stunted somewhat, he's still a well-written and valuable character just like all the rest. Sometimes the best thing a story can do is give characters different perspectives and problems. Imagine if all the strawhats were written exactly like zoro. Wouldn't be as interesting, I think. Anyway I've rambled for too long but my point is to look beyond the surface of how these characters come across and recognize the care that oda puts into them

@@Elliementary99 I'm a little late to this conversation, but I totally agree with you, and would like to add that the whole mascot argument completely falls flat when you think about the rest of the crew. Franky is a living embodiment of a character made for merch, as is Nami and Robin, who are unreasonably attractive. Yet very few people complain about that aspect of their characters, and Robin regularly ranks near the top of people's favorite Straw Hats. Appearances should and do take a backseat to character personality and development, so in my opinion the real reason why Chopper has fallen so low on the Straw Hat popularity list is unlike Nami and Robin, he has not been relevant story-wise since punk hazard. Even though it was minor, Robin got some attention in Dressrosa, aa did Franky and Usopp, and in WCI, Nami, Brook, and Jinbei got their moments. Sanji and Zoro are part of the big three so they don't need to be in the story to carry popularity, similar to Shanks and Blackbeard.
So that leaves us with only one crew member who has neither been a big or small part of any arc since Punk Hazard, and even then his shining moment was for his doctor side, not his warrior/monster side. This has already been rectified in Wano, and it seems like it will continue to be as does onto in that arc.
Btw, I'm not counting Chopper's healing if the Mink's in Zou because it's extremely short and doesn't really add anything to his character.
Chopper's backstory is one of my favorites from the Straw Hats, as was his origin arc. I know a lot of fans like myself have been waiting a very long time for our reindeer boy to get his moment, but to everyone who's complaining that he's dead-ended or lazily written, I say, have patience. Oda is juggling new strawhats (Jinbei and Carrot/Yamato?), a highly anticipated saga that sets up endgame, Sanji's renewed character development, and Luffy's rise to true leadership and power. I'm fine with Chopper taking a backseat to all that because I trust Oda to deliver his moment eventually.
Hell, he already has. The healing of all the plagued allies and enemies through the face nuke and his extremely happy face having done that is possibly his best doctor moment post-timeskip. The addition of his slapping Queen in monster point only made it sweeter. Now we just need to see him go all out.
People need to understand that while One piece is a shonen show, Chopper's role and morals as a person are not linked towards violence. As a matter of fact, that is the exact reason why people underestimate him, which is absolutely rude.
Chopper is a doctor, and as a doctor, he is NOT actually supposed to kill. But because he's a pirate, and also wasn't really trained in an institutional setting, he's not so sheltered that he wouldn't be able to mesh with the straw hats, which is why he's developed fighting skills. But he's someone who clearly isn't naturally drawn to fighting. Unlike Sanji, Zoro, or Luffy.
The issue with people like Chopper or Nami is that their skills aren't really focused on in the show. It isn't until certain moments that we get to see them really shine. Like when chopper is able to detect the issues with the kids on Punk Hazard, or when he saves Luffy in Wano from the poison. Nami really got her moment when the straw hats went up the Knock up stream, because she was the only one who's abilities could have gotten them up there. That's when you can see their skills really shine. (chopper will also be more helpful on onigashima, but you will see later) That's why I'd love to see chopper's medical skills become more relevant, since that's what his speciality is. (which will happen haha, if you want to know, read the manga!)

Theory: At some point in the future Luffy will be struck with the same "incurable" disease and chopper will have to use all his knowleage to cure Luffy, and realise his dream.

I never fully understood problem many people have with time skip Monster Point. While 'original' Monster Point was something that nailed me to my chair (a sentiment shared almost universally, I believe), it was not something that could ever last. Not without loosing it's meaning.
As it was pointed in video, Chopper's struggle was internal. The Straw Hats, and by extension, the viewers, never really saw him as a monster. We percieved him as this sweet, good-hearted eager kid that just wanted to help everyone. This is why Monster Point was terryfying - not just because of it's fantastic, creepy design, or that terryfying roar (sweet merciful baby jesus, that roar...) - but because it was truly a breaking point. We only saw that scary Monster Point twice - at Enies Lobby, and when Kuma separated the crew. Two arguably lowest points of Straw Hat's career.
It emphasized the point. When we've seen it. it was not just some strong technique or attack. It was death of an innocence on screen. When we watched Chopper turn into that thing, out of desperation and fear for his friends, it was not unlike seeing a child drafted to a war - it's goal was to be dark, and it suceeded.
And what would happen, if Chopper would turn into that Monster over and over? It would loose it's meaning. It would no longer be a sign of proverbial excrement hitting the fan, it would simply become... a power up. And in turn, it would rob any previous appearences into a power up, deprived of meaning - a sickness appearent in more than one title within the genre.
And to me? Post Time Skip Monster Point is symbolic. It is a monument of growth Straw Hats have undergone. In washing away the horror of Monster Point, I see that they remember their past, but grown and became seasoned. They are now in control of their fate, not at it's mercy, and are no longer forced to go into that desperte,dark place to win.

Him being able to turn into the Monster Point and control it, is a good thing. It shows that he also grows as a character in the story.

My problem with it is the chopper overcoming monster point should not have been done off screen. This is a huge moment for the character of him overcoming one of his biggest fears we should have been their for it.

He accepted he's monster side. On Fishman Island he showed to control Monster point and said after he's new heavy point seen by Zoro that he wanted to be a human to have friends. Now he wants to be a monster whose useful to Luffy.
Also I think a way to give him more depth is that if he has to fight one of his patients in order to save the strawhats. Since he is still a teen that would be a huge burden to carry since it would go against his core principles.

Idea for Chopper’s Moral Character Arc: Chopper believes that he’s curing someone, when in actuality he’s prolonging their inevitable death. When the character dies, Chopper gets deeply depressed and basically shuts himself from everyone, and during this time others need his help, but he can’t bring himself to do it. Eventually he overcomes this depression, has newfound confidence in his skill as a doctor and realizes not all wounds that can be healed are physical and he learns to deal with the psychological aspects of being a doctor. Oh and of course, the character that dies is closely related to Chopper and someone he considers a deep friend, maybe Luffy considering how many times he uses his gear changes and how that’s been told to affect his lifespan.
Chopper already acknowledges psychological aspects as a doctor. His first mentor was like that remember. He was taught by it. The only psychological problem Chopper has to learn is his. Im bad at english

i've always been fascinated by Chopper and i feels like some people underestimate him as a character. for one, he is incredibly intelligent for his invention of the Rumble Ball. the devil fruit is one of the core concept of One Piece, it remains unchanged through out the course of the story. Vegapunk, the ultimate genius expands upon it's concept by creating artificial devil fruits as well as somehow implement them on objects. but Chopper is the only person that got the balls to mess with his devil fruit power and changed it, a power that is mostly feared by normal people. all zoans fruit got 3 stages of transformation and an awaken form, but Chopper somehow manipulate it to be 6 forms, as well as his Monster form which is probably the awaken devil fruit form. that is unheard of in the world of One Piece! thanks to the fact that he is so cute and sweet, the Government haven't pay much attention to him at all. but if they knew about what he is able to do, i think his bounty would sky rocket and be the prime target to capture alive.

Good video, but your criticism that Chopper lacks a moral need ignores a major facet of his character. Besides his journey to find acceptance, Chopper must learn to step out from the Straw Hats' shadows. From his introduction to the crew, he has acted as the child figure of the crew, taking lessons from the rest and having a simpler understanding of the world compared to them. In arcs like Alabasta, he plays second fiddle to Usopp, and, in Water 7, he doesn't understand Luffy and Usopp's conflict. However, in the New World, he has begun to act as a "father figure," for the lack of a better word. See his conflict to help the children of Punk Hazard or his battle in the Mirror World where he is to Carrot what Usopp was to him two years ago. Now look back to Water 7, where Usopp showcased his moral need. Instead of representing morals of his own, he stayed on the sidelines and had to comprehend his family's internal conflict. Compare this to his captain, who also has lacked much of a moral need throughout the story (excluding the stuff from Sabaody which was less moral and more psychological anyway). And who knows? As Chopper grows into an adult, he may eventually have some similar conflict, although I doubt it considering that the story seems to be "wrapping up."
I find your claim that Chopper is the only Straw Hat who had a major character arc prior to the timeskip baffling. We may have different ideas of what a major character arc is, but, in the 600-ish chapters prior to the timeskip, I've at least recorded major character arcs from Luffy, Usopp, and Robin. Sure, their arcs may not have been wrapped up in a tidy bow, but neither has Chopper's. Anyway, I'd still rank Chopper as my least favorite Straw Hat, but that means very little when you're discussing the cast of one of the greatest manga ever conceived. He serves an important role in the crew narratively and thematically, and Oda still has many opportunities to continue to flesh him out before the end of the story. I have hope.
Hey there! Thanks for your thoughtful comment! I would never dare to say that none other of the straw hats had any significant change before the time skip (just look at usopp). My argument here rather is, that chopper completed a complete character arc, that usually spans over the entirety of a story 🦊 i hope this clears things up a bit

Weiland's Book Creating Character Arcs" in which she goes over the different types of character arcs. The types of arcs a character gets can shift over the course of the story. It should also be noted that when an arc spans the course of an entire story it's called an "Overarching" Character Arc.

What i've always believed for a while is that his giant monster point is actually his awakened devil fruit form, like the prison guards in impel down. Somehow he's able to tap into it using the rumble ball. With some more character development and battles with stronger enemies I reckon he'll be able to tap into it without a rumble ball all together by the end of the series. I'm willing to bet his giant monster point would be stronger too as his body has matured enough to utilise the full potential of it. Man I hope he becomes a literal beast by the end of the series.
I am currently in Punk Hazard right now. One of my favorite scene with chopper was when he was tied on Law's head LMAO. Law's reaction was priceless!

Luffy has really been the sole purpose of the story for a long time now, i would be really good to see the rest of the crew shine again.
We also need to remember that Chopper is only 17 years old meaning he is still starting to learn from the world around him and he has still a lot of growing up to do despite the time skip
This makes me really want to see Chopper react to seeing someone else go through something similar to his origin story. Like some kid accidentally killing their parent/guardian thinking they were helping or something.
Chopper is like Shikimaru/Shikadai in Naruto/Boruto. A strategist. Even a doctor is a strategist also. An excellent chess player in battle, that is what chopper will be. He is the best transforming beast there is. Looking forward to Chopper vs a Beast pirate.

The thing that bugs me about Chopper is how Oda kind of neglects the fact Chopper is a doctor. For example, people are theorizing that chopper is gonna cure Big Moms hunger pangs, and that would be a really good part of the story, but that wasn't even hinted in the slightest. Especially when Chopper spent so much time with her now in Wano. I get he is scared of her but for someone who believes doctors need to cure anyone he didn't even show a hint of interest in Big Moms condition, and I think thats kind of out of character for him.
Also when Law was first introduced as an important character in Punk Hazard, and a doctor, they didn't even have some kind of significant exchange about it.
Chopper is still SHOWN as a doctor, like when he treats Luffys injuries and when he helps the people of Zou, but what I really want is for some big part in the story to be dedicated to his role as a doctor, like a new dillema or development.

Imagine, Chopper is captured by a couple Celestial Dragons and they keep him as a pet or what have you. Beating him up with the other slaves. He see's the slaves being killed and beaten before him as he escapes, and he has a realization: "I spent all this time... trying to be a human.... trying not to be a monster... but, some humans... are REAL monsters..." before killing both Celestial Dragons and getting an insane bounty.
That'd be AWESOME.

Chopper is my favorite character the first few arcs after recruiting him I thought he was pretty strong then Oda decided to start writing him more cowardly up until enis when he goes beast mode. He has so much potential but as you said he tends to turn into a mascot even though he has great fighting potential

I want to add something. It's not that the perspectives are different that there is suddenly conflict. The goals can be the same and perspectives will differ, that's what makes us human. What can and does in fact create conflict is a difference in the desired outcome of reaching said goal.
Let me clarify both so it's almost painfully clear for those who have difficulty seeing it through my perspective.
Say we both want an apple. Our goal is then that apple. My perspective on why I need it is because it's healthy and will help me maintain a healthy lifestyle. Yours is simply because it's delicious, if it was not, you wouldn't eat it. The outcome then is also different but not inherently at odds with eachother. However, if My desired outcome is to be healthy and yours is to not let me have that same apple, we suddenly come to conflict. Your perspective is still because you find it delicious. But your desired outcome is directly at odds with mine.
To give a more topical example, look at luffy vs blackbeard. Both desire the one piece, Both perspectives are to be free, but ones desired outcome is to not have to answer to anyone and the other is to take hold of the world as they see fit. Both perspectives and goals match but the desired outcome is different.
Just some food for thought. Thought I'd add a little extra perspective on the matter ^^

I just got into One Piece last year and Chopper won me with his cuteness. I have plushies and accessories of him too. Now as I get to know him more as a character, I look forward to the next time for him to shine.
Ive always thought Tony Tony Chopper was such an amazing character. First he was a reindeer for 7 years of his life. Then upon eating the human human fruit, he instantaneously gains the intellect of a human. After seeing how cruel life can be first hand by being ostracized, he is then raised by a man whose beliefs are almost purely idealistic. Being raised by idealism, he is then shown how tragic that can be without proper knowledge, and is then raised by possibly the greatest doctor in the world. And im assuming he has a very high IQ as it could be argued that is the true focus of the Human Human Fruit.
I love Chopper and feel that he suffers from the "forgotten Beast" Syndrome. Most beast types in media are tossed to the wayside once they're introduced. Nanaki from FF7, Khamarhi from FF10, Sajin from Bleach, ect.
Chopper could be Hella useful! On Whole-cake Island (hell ANYWHERE) Chopper could've set up an animal spy-net to counter Big Mom. Chopper (AAAALL the strawhats actually) should actively seek out power!
With Chopper's animal instinct and transformations he should strive for observation and Armament Haki and make some kind of NINJA POINT or and extremely fast form
I think you misunderstand choppers role in the story post-timeskip, pre-timeskip he has a child trying to conquer self-doubt and become more mature, post timeskip chopper is there to help guide children to become more mature like him, case and point the children on punk hazard or momo during dressrosa, this could also lead to chopper helping to guide Big Mom to become a better person in the future as well. To explain more maybe you should check out Craftsdwarf's channel he really helped me think about many characters in a different light including chopper :)

Well it would have been, if he ever actually hurt anyone with it. So the opportunity was there, it just never happened. And I think, since it's something he doesn't have any control over, isnt it more a phsyical thing?
I think the next step for chopper and the rest of the crew, is to learn haki. Luffies crew is most set up like shanks right? All his crew is A tear at least. Ussop got it in dressrosa, brook worked with something very close to conquerors (debatable I know), but I really think the rest of the crew will learn haki. Whatever the case I really want chopper to be treated as a main character again.

Chopper is the DOCTOR that sets up the perfect duality!
So I'm really interested in what's going to happen to Chopper, and was thrilled to see someone else is thinking deep about this. Because you're absolutely right - Chopper has had an entire character arc and has stopped developing, which makes him an outlier in the crew. Unless a new ceiling is introduced, Chopper will become a static character. It's not always a bad thing, but more often than not it just makes a character boring, which is what we're experiencing post time skip. I think a lot of potential new ceilings have been introduced, such as the Leadership qualities you pointed out.
However that can become a double edged sword - if Chopper becomes too much of a leader, then he won't fit with the crew again, much like when Usopp was struggling with his place in the crew. Entirely hypothetically, a leader arc could knock Chopper out of the crew, temporarily or permanently. Not the same way Usopp went out, but willingly - like Jinbe. With his relationship to Carrot being "big-brothery" and Pedro’s death, we might be getting a glimpse of another role he could take on, which would be foreshadowed by his own previous character arc. That is, a leader on Zou - whose people generally seem to be thought of as slaves or monsters, similar to the Fishmen.
And since his morals are pretty ironclad, I doubt we'll see them challenged, which takes away the potential for that kind of character arc.
I doubt it would happen, but it would be interesting - and create new struggle for the Straw Hats that’s internal rather than external.

Also, franky is probably going to be your hardest character analysis because he's very much got setup for big things in the future but in my book there's nothing fix about other more interactions with the crew and more recognition.
I feel like they have been foreshadowing a lot of great "power-up" fights where everyone in wano will get into a fight and grow immensely in the process.
It’s just when you have such a HUGE cast in the most recent arks I think Oda wasn’t able to give Chopper his moment, or unless his time is coming it’s just a slow change that gets overshadowed by other stuff.

Chopper lacks a basic identity of himself. He goes with whatever the flow is. That makes him characters that is invisible. Though chopper is a doctor he doesn't have something that other doctor don't have as a doctor. He is an addon character to fill the space.

I believe Chopper will have another character arc when they clash with Blackbeard since Blackbeard was the one to “free” the drum kingdom from Walpol months before the Strawhats got there. I also notice that Luffy told Sanji that he heard when he was a kid that people from snowy islands don’t sleep, I think that this little fact is related to Blackbeard.

NotTheWheel Franky did have the Mister Pink fight but other than that he has not done anything.
Franky literally started the SH's involvement with Doflamingo on Dressrosa... And hes the one who distracted and been the bait to allow the dwarfs and gang to infiltrate Sugar's base... and fought Senor Pink.
Beckham Pang Sadly Franky ended up being overshadowed by Senior Pink himself in that fight. And when a characters been reduced to “bait” being one of their moments... that’s kinda sad.
His 'arc' got resolved at introduction, being accepted by a group of people, except that he was already accepted by two in the past.
All the timeskip did was Flanderize him, which in his case made him more child-like.
The arc he needed in my view was one in which he forged his own identity, but instead he became the very mascot that his wanted poster made him out to be.
Seeing more development for Chopper in Wano would be a treat, being able to follow the Strawhat's growth over decades is one of my favorite parts of One Piece.

Monster Point WAS Chopper's moral need. He knew that if he didn't gain control of himself, he was going to hurt someone he cared about. That insecurity was always there, because although they liked him as he was, they had never seen his true "monster self". Mastering Monster Point over the timeskip was his need, and even though we didn't see his journey to it, it was still a very important part of his character.
I believe Chopper will fight Queen instead of Sanji. I think after what happened to the people of Wano with the smile fruits and Queens plague bullets affecting the prisoners, it will push him over the top helping him to beat Queen. This will also push his bounty higher and place him under Luffy on the crew shocking everyone. I can see Oda doing this to troll us all 😂
I want chopper have a new bounty for his monster point which he gets a atleast 100 million+ bounty and a new nickname like...idk "wendigo" or something like that that cherishes the monster part of him aswell rather than being the cute cotton candy lover, he could be the monster that he avoided to become but now wants to be to help luffy

I really love everyone in the crew including those who didn't stay or not officially part of the crew such as Vivi or Carrot. The only thing that I want chopper to have is a good fight with someone quite formidable and beat them so that the world will be able to recognize him as not just as a mascot or a pet but someone who's a great asset within the Strawhats capable of fighting side by side with them.

Did you read The Anatomy of Story? You use a lot of John Truby’s terminology. Anyway, really good analysis of Chopper’s character.
Now that you lay it out like that it makes so much sense. Everybody on that boat has their quirks, Chopper being all cute shouldn't stop him from being an interesting character that everybody can appreciate, I've read many people on Reddit downgrading him to a cute fluff pet and nothing more and now I'm sure of the real reason. I really hope Oda-sensei is planning something more for him, as you have suggested, and recover the respect of every OP fan, I wish when that happens it will finally reflect properly on his bounty. Who knows, maybe Oda-sensei sort of had it planned for a long time so when the situation changes, it comes as a big shock.

After coming back to this video after the end of Wano - it’s a bit disappointing to see that everyone’s thought of him doing something special combat wise during the battle of Onigashima is all but mute… he does save all the Ice Oni and greatly contributes to the success of the Samurai and everyone in the main hall- though not the Level up per say that everyone wants…
I say that's the greatest thing about One Piece that all the characters are going through different arcs that fit their age and Chopper's leadership quality is gonna be needed if he wants to be a doctor able to cure any disease.
I feel like one thing that would've made Chopper's character more compelling, and unique, was if Oda had made him hate his Devil Fruit powers. We've never had a character downright hate the abilities they've been given - everyone sees it as a boon - but Chopper grew up hated by both his herd and humans because of the differences his power provides so him hating his powers would've been a logical next step. He could've developed the rumble ball as a way to make any given transformation permanent in an attempt to stop his fruit from working, and accidentally found monster point organically that way as well. This would clash nicely with Luffy, whose powers make him as much of an anomaly as Chopper, yet Luffy fully embraces it. His character arc would've still been him growing to accept his place as a "monster" but it would now also have the added element of him accepting what his Devil Fruit has made him become. This could've culminated in Zou, where he finally meets others like him.
I wonder what this kind of Chopper would think of Wano and the Smile Fruits - users who deliberately deform themselves all to gain animal-like abilities. Smiles seem like the ultimately culmination of everything Chopper hates.

Good point about Chopper showing leadership characteristics... the thing about post time-skip Chopper is that, his greatest moments (unlike most protagonists) are not feats of battle but medical feats, which exactly work towards his development and his struggle to fulfill his dream. His biggest moments , as a DOCTOR (for that is his role in the crew) are post time -skip and we have watched him leading, educating and curing in Punk-Hazard, in Zou and in Wano. Those are some tremendously epic moments if seen by the viewpoint of "medical" feats, and this is something that can be applied to any member of the crew according to their roles (for example, the epic cake that Sanji created in Whole-cake arc that was a fabtastic victory / moment for his character as a cook and in harmony with his dreams, even if not a fighting moment) my point is, we should see strawhats' development from the viewpoint of their role in the crew and not only fighting (which is yhe hravy poiny of interest, one piece being a shonen) I mean look at him the *man* is averting whole genocides and developing vaccines and educatung other doctors on the spot!! in that regard, he could easily be seen as one of the coolest members
