Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires perform "Live Oak" at WNRN in Charlottesville, Virginia. Video by Rich Tarbell. Please subscribe to our videos! www.richtarbell.com
The details he puts in the lyrics of this song are what makes it so incredible. He's not a rough guy, he's "rougher than the timber shipping out of Fond du Lac". He didn't put her in a wooden coffin, he "carved the cross from live oak, and a box from short leaf pine". He didn't bury her grave deep in the ground, he "buried her so deep she touched the water table line". The writing paints is so vividly.
@@willh1082 maybe.. My view was that he was reffering to the radio.. Wasnt mass played 8 times a day.. But i listen to a lot of isbell, his music, voice lyrics and chord progressions soothe me. Therefore, isbell is overplayed by choice in my household.
She's a perfect fit with him! She knows how to highlight the song and not take away from the song!! They are great! Jason damn good writer!! From north Alabama! ROLL TIDE!!
So well-constructed and delivered. The subtlety of her entry and exit played, not produced; his rhythm, soft, and all to ground his aching, haunting vocals. A perfect song.
Keep coming back to this album. All of the man's work is fantastic, but this album is next level, one of the best albums ANYONE has put together. The lyrics, guitar masterclass, all of it, amazing.
"There's a man who walks beside me and he's who I used to be, and I wonder if she sees him and confuses him with me. I wonder who she's pines for...." These lyrics pull my heart, pulling it apart.
Southeastern was the album where I discovered Jason Isbell. I love his songwriting and his band the 400 Unit are real solid players. I've seen Jason in concert 7 times and going for my 8th in August this time with Sheryl Crow! This intimate performance is amazing and really lets you truly feel the emotion of the song. The story sucks you in like a good suspense novel. Enjoy!
He's such an amazing songwriter. It's like he's tapped into my whole life and all of my memories with all of his references. As a working songwriter myself I can only dream about being this talented. Thanks, Jason for everything you do. The world is a better place with you in it.
Fantastic performance. Isbell is becoming one of THE great American Singer- Songwriters. Southeastern is his best work to date (Solo or with DBT). It can be a tough listen, but that's the point. Jason Isbell's conviction as a musician and as an artist shine through here.
I get chills right down all of the bones of my body when I listen to this song and sing it out loud. Live Oak and Isbell's performance go to show how a song can truly captivate a listener and drag raw emotions out of that person.
Hi Andy Jones, please don't write BS here! Jason, Amanda, wonderful! Thank you very much for that song! If you ever want to play with an old (and good) guitarist from Cologne (Germany) please write to me. I need a little money to visit my Friends Gubi and Guy in Forida and Arizona. Amanda, Jason, I love your music!
This song gives me the chills every time. Jason can make you feel emotions from his music with ease. Amanda is a damn nice touch to this song as well. Props to both of you. Keep the music coming.
I don't know how I'd never heard of Jason and Amanda (and their band when playing in that format), but I'm just plain old glad I found them now and I can't get enough... Great music for sure and you can just feel every note and harmony between their voices, his guitar and her fiddle. Truly beautiful stuff.
These lyrics are simple amazing. They make sense listening to them, but the contrast of what the guitar and fiddle (violin) are playing compared to the lyrics and how they are sung, give this song a much deeper greater feeling and meaning with a real sense of emotion indescribable by even the most complex words. There is no other way to sing what he is singing. He does and amazing job writing music like this.
The only other Singer-Songwriters I've heard that come close are Robert Earl Keen and Richard Shindell - but honestly, Jason (although younger) is the master of the style.
That song is awesome! I love it. Story, lyric, vocal tone ,guitar, fiddle all spot on! Carry on ! Im wallace ,brushy creek boy no 2 in leander texas! Look us up!
Really hate that I missed a chance for tickets to the Jan. 24th show in Abingdon at the Barter. Great tune! Thanks for posting and wishing all the best to Jason and his lovely, talented wife.
I think you guys may be taking the song too literally. The most amazing thing about this song is how he twists the opening verse at the end, with just one word change. Brilliant.
Thing is I know EXACTLY what word you're thinking of...except he doesn't do it in this version! I was actually singing along and it comes to that "there's a man who walks beside her" and he didn't sing it. I was like, "nooooooooo!" That's the whole coup de grace of the song in my opinion.
@@mikemurphy4694 propably first, it was something like 'Now there's a man who walks beside her...' and then he dropped that...and here, he dropped 'her' too...maybe he doesn't like it anymore, everybody's changin'
Listen closely to those lyrics! Great, great, great song, but creepy, creepy, creepy! If you're like me, once you see where the song title came from, you'll never be able to hear "live oak" again without a chill going up and down your spine.
I've been saying that "she touched the water table line" means he poisoned all his neighbors wells. Also the sword/plains before the war thing kind of implies he is an ex follower of John Brown
We are all hoping that folks in our life accept the public face we present. I didn't kill anyone on a Great Lakes Freighter, but there are many things about my past I wouldn't want anyone to know
Best part for me is when he turns the reference to the "man who walks beside HER" at the end, rather than the "man who walks beside me". He doesn't do it here, but nonetheless a great story/song!
Speaking as a violinist, I can see her bow technique really isn't very good, but dang! She pulls it off really well in spite of that! With a little formal training she could get twice as much out of that instrument, and that's just scary. Oh, yeah, the song is mind-blowing too, as are most of the other Jason Isbell songs I've discovered in the last week or so.
+tothewheel , I am a huge fan of Jason and Amanda. Have you seen the Austin City Limits show? If not check her out there. I think he technique has improved. Also, big props of giving a critique of an artist in a cool and non Dbag manner.
WoW, this guy just pulled off the text book how too. “How to end your career in one act”. He literally destroyed his career by showing the country music fans around the world, what he really believes in, which isn't much at all, unless you consider the fact that he agrees with a child mutilating themselves without having to tell their parents, or that 1rst graders should have pornography stands in their classroom. The fact that he hates himself for being white, says what state of mind he is in that alone will shatter the hearts of country music fans, who believe in family and that children are our future and need parents to guide them, He has no morels or values that even come close to relating to us country music fans.

This right here is why Jason is the best songwriter alive
When will Jason get the wider recognition he deserves? The finest lyricist I've ever heard.
I've been singing all my life and now I feel like a pretender. I am haunted by this fella's voice and writing. His depth..
Tha fact that it’s not overplayed is the great quality it allows the mystery of the song to remain
In your household perhaps lol. Ive been overplaying it ever since i heard it. Still to this day it caltivates me every time i listen to this song.

At this time in my life, it's hard to listen to this song, with out tears in my eyes.
Somewhere I saw a discussion with Isbell about the song and he was asked how she died. His reply was, "Who said she died?"
Thanks for letting us know that! I love the song, but I LOVE trying to understand it. This adds another wrinkle.😄

No echo, no reverb, no doubling. Dry as a bone. That's a compliment, BTW.
