St. Paul And The Broken Bones: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Close your eyes and listen, and you might imagine someone who looks a bit like Otis Redding. Open them, and you're likely to see someone who looks more like your neighborhood bank teller.
That man standing on my desk in the golden shoes is Paul Janeway. He was, in fact, a bank teller in Alabama not long ago - and this stupendous seven-piece band from Birmingham has only been doing this since 2012. But take a look at this Tiny Desk Concert and you'll see why St. Paul And The Broken Bones' music is so winning. It's got heart and soul and flair, with a well-worn sound buoyed by strong, fresh songwriting. -- BOB BOILEN
Set List:
"Half The City"
"Call Me"
"Broken Bones And Pocket Change"

Greetings to you, Kate Mitchell! I hope this video of SPATBB still moves you like it did 6 months ago. THIS is indie music at it's best. I loved your initial comment! Lotsa SOUL - for sure! Wishing you peaceful contentment.
It's actually your heart that pumps blood.
You're welcome
Otis Redding begged God to go back. God said, "sure, but there's a few conditions."

I feel like Paul Janeway and Brittany Howard (Alabama Shakes) are destined to collaborate in at least one song for the good of mankind.
Also Daryl Hall

Seen him live in New Orleans, he crawled under the stage rug and threw his shoes at the drummer. Needless to say he was very deep in his music. By far the best live performance I have ever been in attendance. He feels the music and moves the audience emotionally.
5 years ago on a whim bought tickets he rolled himself up in the rug. Praise the lord
He’s too much for me. Kind of a showboat.

Broken Bones And Pocket Change, makes me think i've ran out of tears by the end of it, every single time. this mans voice and his band are just incredible.

Meanwhile, you're sitting in your mom's basement being a nobody @ filipe.
I saw them in February when they played at an old church turned into a museum/concert venue. Genuinely one of the best shows i've ever seen. Paul sounds like he eats instruments to gain their musical power.
Did you see them at the church in denver ??
the church is an edm venue. was it mr. smalls in pittsburgh?
lol goat comment.. sooo accurate
To people listening to this for the first time, there's no way you expected that voice from that lead singer, right?
0:00 - Half The City
3:57 - Call Me
7:29 - Broken Bones And Pocket Change
You better SANG THAT SONG PAUL! I love your sound and I am NOW a NEW FAN FOREVER!
I can't believe idiots are complaining about the sound being to black! Amy Winehouse and so many others are LEGENDS with their voices and music! Music has NO COLOR! Keep SINGING your HEARTS OUT!
+Octoberrain Dixon I agree and love your attitude! Wish everyone would see it that way!
+Octoberrain Dixson I feel you 100%, good music is good music. On another note, as a white man, I wish I could sing "too black" lol. I grew up on Otis and Sam Cooke and Smokey Robinson and all the greats. This man has SOUL. No way around it.
+Sgt StickyTits nice name haha
+Octoberrain Dixson Its not black its soul. a feeling that you cant see.
+Sgt StickyTits However Soul is very rare amongst white people thats what makes this so great !!

Ever notice how only truly talented people make it on tiny desk? It's like a little bullshit filter. I wish they had a radio station.
well... National Public Radio is an American privately and publicly funded non-profit membership media organization that serves as a national syndicator to a network of 900 public radio stations in the United States of America.
so gucci mane is a truly talented individual..?

Am going down the Mountain Jam performer list. I'll be seeing this guy in June in the Catskills along with Tom Petty and Steve Miller. Shaping up to be an action packed festival.
He is singing *ON* the tiny desk...nice.
almost off it once or twice...
Cause hes an egotistical asshole probably.
Matthew Horizon agreed lol
I hope it is a strong desk🤣
😂
Just wanted to say that this band has been the unchallenged favorite for my toddler. He’s only two and is very fickle about if he’ll even tolerate the Wiggles, Sesame Street, Daniel Tiger, Super Simple Songs, etc etc and gets easily bored with other “adult” music (Led Zepplin is up there but still hit or miss with him), but this band-something about it just makes him so happy, even when he’s having a tantrum. He bounces and punches the air when he’s listening to this video and has done so for about a year.
So congrats, you have the approval of the world’s pickiest music critic.
Have you tried Fitz & The Tantrums? Such a fun journey with the little one!
Love this! ❤
Awe that's so awesome!!
10:23 is where you realize this man truly lives the music he sings. Absolutely amazing!!
I come from Iran, So English is not my language. But your voice and your people just made a straight way into my hart :). Beautiful, Just Beautiful..... GOOD LUCK
@Erik Lilly Yes Brother :) We have a saying. What Comes from Hart sits on other hart just as easily
Enjoy brother, may beautiful music find you through your life 👍
Hope you are doing well here! I think music is on of our best attributes.
Hi, can you recommend any music from Iran for us to listen to? I've heard a little Persian music before and liked it. Let's make this exchange of culture a two way thing :D
سلام
Spread the word! And one day we might have a chance to hear the equivalent Iranian jump up tunes on NPR. I have had the pleasure of being exposed to artistry and groove through NPR's window and if the hat fits I'm sure they'll wear it. There's your mission... Cheers
When he said "sad song", I thought it was gonna be a "sad song", not a "crush your soul into a million little pieces song"... aww shit.
Love the gold shoes! What a voice, a white Otis
Life long soul and blues fan . This broke me. Never seen anything this good.
People complaining that he sounds "too black" (WUT?) are either racist or too dim-witted to appreciate this music. Good music is what it is... regardless of who makes it.
Exactly. I can tell you AS A BLACK PERSON he sounds more 'Alabama' than 'stereotypically trying to sound black'. He has 10 worlds of talent and that's all anyone should care about!
Kade Kalon I wouldn't expect a soul singer from Alabama to sound any diffferent from this man regardless of what color his skin was.
Kade Kalon
Preach! People "complaining" probably don't have the Southern gospel roots!
Good Lord...is it...is it actually possible black people and white people have stuff in common *gasp* (sarcasm). Soul is soul. We're all born with it, some are just better than others at showing theirs.
Justin Collins 👏
I would normally think it´s rude to stand on the table but, nah, he´s cool. He can stand on the table. There is nothing cleaner than a pair of golden shoes and a broken spirit.
David James you just wrote a song right there!
Ha ha. Spot on!
Amen!
Lol yes!
Pure soul pouring out from this band I can listen to them jam out every minute of my life. I’m still listening to this set in 2022
It's a go to for certain. When you need one hellova lift
I gotta come back to this every few months to remember what real music sounds like.
Don't forget!
I believe the technical term for what he's doing is preaching. Message received.
I have been listening to soul music since the late Seventies. These boys cut the mustard 100%
I just love NPR Tiny desks concerts
I've never seen such a passionate, emotional performance by a vocalist from my generation. I'm an early 80's baby. Stuff like this doesn't exist anymore and it's sad. This dude genuinely was feeling every ounce of what's coming out of his mouth and whoever said he's faking it, or imitating is ignorant and is just envious of what they can never do. Music has been around since before Christ, so musicians are obviously going to be influenced by other musicians. Music wouldn't exist as a major in college if this wasn't so. Amazing performance. WOW!
This is one of the absolute best tiny desk concerts I've ever seen
I MADE AN RUclips ACCOUNT JUST BECAUSE I WANTED I WRITTEN AS A COMMENT THAT THIS MAN HAS BEEN BLESSED WITH THE STRONGEST VOICE SINCE MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. LORD HAVE MERCY UPON ME THANK YOU FOR THIS WONDERFUL MUSIC MAY YOU HAVE YEARS TO COME OF JOY
I saw this band open for John Mayer in Tuscaloosa, he came out and blew everyone away with those pipes, my girlfriend and I were speechless, an amazing bamd with an amazing talent from my home town
If you don't feel this in your soul you're dead inside. Amazing set
From 10:00 - 11:00 is the most soulful heart-rending performance I've ever seen. If he's faking it then he needs an Oscar tied to a Grammy. This guy is a force of nature. I hear a lot of comparisons to Otis Redding and Al green. He has a similar voice, and it's that damn good. Not to mention these aren't covers. These are their original songs that make you want to play them again again. I'm so happy I found this.
cannot do more than agree, what a powerful performance he does!! and the whole band just made great music for our generation.
I don't think I've ever seen nor heard such a soulful and meaningful minute in my whole entire life!!!!!
I was wondering if they were covers, absolutely gorgeous
"Is it hot? Nah man we from Alabama" 😂😂😂
The is one of the realest things that's ever been said on Tiny Desk.
The acoustics of the Tiny Desk recordings are phenomenal and deserve a shout-out. Across several musicians I have compared the Tiny Desk acoustics/recordings are quite superior to their recording studio counterparts.
MY GOD! Anyone say, “goosebumps from head to toe”?! NEVER expected that voice and soul coming from that man. Another reason why I love NPR Tiny Desk... I will absolutely see these guys if they are ever within 500 miles! SING it... I feel GOD!!! WooHOO!
Can we get him and Leon Bridges together please! I'm a fan of Leon but now I'm feeling this guy a lot.
+Makiyah Jackson haha just went from leon bridges to this. great idea :)
+Dan Nunez same!!!
+Makiyah Jackson You should check out Lee Fields.
Check out Marc Broussard and Lamont Landers.
That would be EPIC!

With as many people that have started watching Tiny Desk concerts during the COVID pandemic...I really with NPR would re-release some of these older concerts, bring them back to the top of the queue, and get them some more exposure!

It's no joke.
You have to see him live. He just commands the stage and puts on such an incredible performance. It's crazy good.
