Would you recommend upgrading to this from a 55mm Zeiss Sonnar/Sony 1.8? Awesome video as always dude 😊 currently I have the 55mm and 25mm Zeiss lenses but not sure if I’m missing out with the G master selection of glass
They are both good lenses, even though the GM just has that little edge autofocus performance wise. In my experience the Zeiss lenses look EXTREMELY clinical, which highly depends on taste. The GMs such as the 24 1.4 have really pleasing characteristics (for me personally at least) and the 50 1.4 seems to be very alike. I'd say if you're not bothered by anything your current lens does, stick to it and invest the money elsewhere.
I ended up getting the 50 GM 1.4 instead of the Sigma 50 1.4 DG DN for the same reasons. The main reason is that the Sigma is big and heavy just like their 35mm 1.4 DG DN. I also ended up just getting all GM’s for my pro work with the exception of the stellar Sigma 85mm 1.4 DG DN beast lens!
I have the Zeiss Batis 40 and the Sony 50 2.5 G plus the Sony Zeiss 55 1.8. I think I’m sticking with those three for my needs in this focal length range. I had high hopes for this lens but 516 grams is still kinda heavy. What Sony really needs is an updated 50 1.8, something like a 50 1.8 G, small and lightweight with fast linear motors and high optical quality and under $1000. Nicely done video, it was enjoyable and informative to watch.
The 55 Zeiss is quite light already though, probably the aperture ring and weatherproofing that makes the G master heavier, might be worth it.. I’m considering upgrading but not sure if it’s worth it either
Excellent look at the Sony 50mm/1.4 (as always) and yes, I would very much like to get your input/experience with this lens compared to the Sigma 50mm/1.4 as well. Thanks much.
Love the video sequence! Ahh...if only the 50mm F1.4 came out when I bought the 50mm F1.2 GM. I would've gotten it due the same filter size as my 24 and 35mm GM lens.
I’ll see if I can get my hands on the sigma for a comparison! But from what I’ve seen, the Sony is technically better, but in ways that may have little practical effect.
may sound like a first world problem, but I actual have a 50mm f1.2 GM, bought significantly below normal market price. Means I could switch to the 50mm f1.4 GM without losing or gaining any money. As money is not on the pros or cons list in this case, I'm torn whether to do the switch or not. f1.2 still seems to be a bit superior in image quality, doesn't it? But the idea of carrying around less weight is very intriguing... Any recommendation?
Same situation- leaning towards doing it as the extra 1/3 stop isn’t really a game-changer for me personally. Having a lens that weighs 1/3 less however, is a major consideration.
I love this lens ... the same like 50/1,2, but the newer 50, is better for travel. With 1,2/50 I was concerned about smashing it somewhere - it's not lens, which you often change without fear
Great video as always. Would love a comparison between this, the new Sigma 50mm f1.4 and the Saymang 50 1.4 mkII. Interestingly, you chose the same setting for the outdoor shot Tony Northrup used for the infamous 50mm f1.2m EOS R "toneh" video. Is that on purpose? Cryptomnesia? :D
Can you do a comparison video of 50mm 1.4 GM vs Sony Zeiss 55 1.8 ? Alot of people have been asking for this comparison, hopefully you can beat other you tubers to the punch
I'm really torn between this and the 2.5. Mobility of 2.5 is very tempting while quality of bokeh of the 1.4 is nice too. If only they have a 1.8 G that'll be an instant buy for me
Love love love your image edits. It's moody without being over the top, very subtle. By all accounts, looks like another winner from Sony. I am a Sigma fanboy myself, but the weight/size savings is significant. Great take on a great new lens!
I commented this on Chris’ vid but seeing as you have the 3 1.4 lenses, could you do a test on a gimbal to see if they all balance relatively the same? Would increase the value of this set up massively if so!
Honestly this is the type of video I needed. I'm a beginner with a A7C and a kit lens 24 to 60 4-5.6 so this helped me decide to buy this! A little worried about the focus breathing but I'll just have to figure it out. I would love to see that comparison video between this one and the sigma if that's still on the table! You got my sub
I watched this video on my Samsung UHD Tv and oh my gosh, the clarity, the colors…tooo crisp and felt like watching a high production movie! 😅 One question, I have a Sony F1.8 50 mm, the cheap one..now what would be the main difference between an expensive lens and the cheap one in terms of video quality?
I’ve been eyeing Sony 50mm F1.2 GM for a while. I already have 24mm and 35mm F1.4 GM lenses. I guess my purchase decision comes down to whether I want to have trio of 24mm, 35mm and 50mm F1.4 lenses or 50mm and 85mm in F1.2 lenses when Sony releases mark II version of 85mm GM. 🤔
You know, I'm jealous of Panasonic 1.8 S lens where they all the same size and weight and minimal focus breathing. But when I compare the prices. I noticed that the GM is just a little bit more money than the Panasonic S lens for 1.4 aperture versus 1.8 aperture.
lost me at vignette. Ill go with the F1.2 not sure why sony keeps doing lenses that nobody are asking for. I think we need more a revise 16-35 Gm than another 50mm IMO
A great video! The colours looked chef’s kiss! 🤌🏽 What is the name of the cup that you had in the 50mm video? Also, Peak Design is spelled incorrectly in your description! 🙏🏽☺️
Dunna! Another belter of a video!! Love the storytelling aspect you have developed as real world examples of how the lens ‘sees’ the world. Love your work, Dude! Have you also experienced any focus breathing on the 24mm F1.4 GM? I can see that you would not be a fan of that in the 50mm F1.4 GM from a video angle and I’m curious how you get around it, if at all. I’d also LOVE LOVE to see your review of the Sigma 50mm F1.4 and a comp video between the Sony and the Sigma. I am growing to be a Sigma fanboy as I feel they have significantly upped their game, however I’m **always** keen to see and hear Dunna’s thoughts. Thankyou Bro! 👊🏾😁
Focus breathing is worse on the sigma lenses and if you have one of the new sony bodies, you can use focus breathing compensation (works only on Sony glass) which eliminates focus breathing
@Dunna as a beginner the pleasing natural look probably is a great feature. Can you share a comparison video too. I have a question, if email is not your preferred mode of communication, please let us know your preferred means of contact.
A RECENTLY CONDUCTED STUDY BY TANGENT MEDIA HOUSE SHOWED THAT THE VIDEOS SHOT WITH LATEST SONY ALPHA CAMERAS CAUSED MORE STRAIN ON THE EYES OF THE VIEWERS. SOME VIEWERS ALSO COMPLAINED ABOUT SWOLLEN LOWER EYELIDS AS A RESULT. ANY SIMILAR EXPERIENCE REGARDING THIS?
I decided to save a couple bucks by going a mint condition song a 7iii Wanted to see if I could purchase a better glass instead of a “better” camera like a Sony 7iv ! In that case I’m heavily gravitating towards a 50mm 1.4 But in regards to G MASTER For a first lens portraiture mainly / concert backstage , what would you recommend? 25,35,50,85?
The Color Grading/LUTs on the shot sequence is so awesome! Thanks for sharing the video
I absolutely love this lens, I looked at both the 1.2, and the 1.4. and if you are doing video you are gonna love the smaller, lighter 1.4

Thanks. Lot of CA on Zeiss in portraits but … is the overall look a step up I wonder. Fair amount of $$.
This is gonna be my first GM. Can’t get here soon enough. I was considering the Sigma, but it’s size and CA make me look towards the Sony instead.

My thoughts exactly. Sony needs a 50 and 85 1.8 G
Totally agree too. 1.8G’s needed
The sony g 2.5 SO good 👍
Well now I want a cookie and coffee. This lens looks great, nice size and weight!
Excellent look at the Sony 50mm/1.4 (as always) and yes, I would very much like to get your input/experience with this lens compared to the Sigma 50mm/1.4 as well. Thanks much.
Congrats on your style of transmitting what you feel. The effort pays off.

How does it compare against the new sigma 50 1.4?

I just picked up the Samyang - Dustin Abbott did a review comparing the two.
Can you do a comparison video of 50mm 1.4 GM vs Sony Zeiss 55 1.8 ? Alot of people have been asking for this comparison, hopefully you can beat other you tubers to the punch
Nice video thy. Worth upgrading from Zeiss 55 1.8? Sony A7rV. Photos, no videos.
I'm really torn between this and the 2.5. Mobility of 2.5 is very tempting while quality of bokeh of the 1.4 is nice too. If only they have a 1.8 G that'll be an instant buy for me
The grade on that sequence was gorgeous, the orangey browns in the afternoon light. Was that one of your LUTs?
Love love love your image edits. It's moody without being over the top, very subtle. By all accounts, looks like another winner from Sony. I am a Sigma fanboy myself, but the weight/size savings is significant. Great take on a great new lens!
Would be interested in your comparison with the Sony 50 1.4 vs the Sigma 50 1.4 DG DN.

How did you get on with the 50mm 1.4 and Sony A7C? I have the A7Cii and wondering whether it might be too big or unbalanced.
Would love a comparison with the Sigma AND the Samyang 50mm F1.4!
Best purchase I’ve ever made 😊👌
Glad to hear it! I didn’t even know you could get it yet!
@@dunnadidit I meant the older Sony 50mm G master 😊 forgive me I commented too soon because I got so excited to see your video 🤣
Haha that makes more sense!! That f1.2 is a monster! So good!
I want to know what the switches are on the lens and how to use them.
Shot beautifully. Great review and video
I watched this video on my Samsung UHD Tv and oh my gosh, the clarity, the colors…tooo crisp and felt like watching a high production movie! 😅
One question, I have a Sony F1.8 50 mm, the cheap one..now what would be the main difference between an expensive lens and the cheap one in terms of video quality?
Video quality would depend on the body
Great review dude! Great mix of practical to technical

Hey, Dunna. Great comparison. Now, when your hands on that Sigma 50, let us know!
I totally wanna see a comparison between the Sigma 50mm vs Sony 50mm 1.4
lost me at vignette. Ill go with the F1.2 not sure why sony keeps doing lenses that nobody are asking for. I think we need more a revise 16-35 Gm than another 50mm IMO
Is this equivalent to the samyang 45mm 1.8?
A great video! The colours looked chef’s kiss! 🤌🏽
What is the name of the cup that you had in the 50mm video?

Thanks so much!
It’s called the fellow Carter mug.
Thanks! I’ll update that!

What backpack is that? It looks cool ❤
Did you go to Vic High back in the day?
hi. awesome clip as always. Sigma Sony comparison yes please!
Nice work, shows how much you can do with a hybrid and good lens. At 4:14 did you notice that dog walking upright?
Lol I saw that too
Pretty dope video , keep up the good work
@Dunna as a beginner the pleasing natural look probably is a great feature. Can you share a comparison video too.
I have a question, if email is not your preferred mode of communication, please let us know your preferred means of contact.
I’ll definitely see what I can do!
Email is definitely great for me!
Comparison video please :)
I can’t see the difference. I need a G master tv. My phone is not good enough
Nice backpack ;)

If I didn’t already have the 1.2 I’d 100% pick a copy of this up!
