      Perhaps a potential explanation for how the gun works is that the gun itself doesn't create wormholes or teleports the user but instead piggy backs off pre-existing wormholes by creating a temporary opening in our reality and the wormhole and then in addition to that the gun generates a very unstable, provisional wormhole that leads to a location that roughly goes to the location programmed into the gun.
      This is obviously very, very risky as you could quickly zip yourself 1000 meters high above your intended target and perhaps many miles away as well and at the very worst you could just straight up piggyback and provisionally wormhole yourself in the middle of a solid material like a mountain in Xen or something, which makes using such a tool a last resort option.
      So if in Half life 2 (prior to Episode 2) if the same device were used (and not when the resistance were testing their more advanced teleporters) maybe such a person would potentially instead get sucked into the portal that the Combine set up -- but considering it's a one way portal type thing, I don't know if such a person would be able to get through and piggyback of a Combine portal or let alone if such a person would live?

    • @absentation

      Blue shift teleporter requires less power because it's old equipment, it was an earlier prototype of first cross dimensional teleportation experiment and it runs out of power after cross dimensional teleportation making it only useful for local teleportation and we've seen another local teleporter built in half-life 2 in Kleiner's lab, and it also runs on power from a socket AND IT ALSO MALFUNCTIONS LIKE THE ONE IN BLUE SHIFT LEAVING GORDON IN A STATE OF UNCERTAINTY.. I saw no reactors or combine dark energy spheres running that kleiner teleporter, hope that explains the lambda complex reactor for cross dimensional teleportation and shows you that the whole half-life franchise shouldn't be cannon 😂. Also you can't ever assume that kleiner and eli's teleporters are based on combine tech because it's said during the game that combines can do cross dimensional teleportation but they still haven't figured out how to make local teleportation devices. And that's all I have folks.

    Half-Life Teleporter: is accurate and safe.
    Opposing Force Displacer: can kill Shepard on two occasions. Using it is literally a russian roulette.
    Blue-Shift Teleporter: also not safe as seen with Barney being teleported across places in the end. Rosenberg noted Barney was lucky he's even alive and teleported back in one piece.

    • @Cysco8575
      @Cysco8575 Год назад +47

      Yeah, Proto Labs Teleporter and Displacer Cannon may be smaller/compact and need less energy but where less effective and too much unpredictable. Also the Proto Labs Tele needed Barney to go to Xen first to adjust the array so they can be teleported to other places on Earth while the Lambda Teleporter didn't need any of that and was far more safer.

    • @littlechickeyhudak
      @littlechickeyhudak Год назад +14

      There’s also probably some nonsense one could come up with regarding WHERE in Xen you teleport to. Maybe Nihilanth is at the “center” and getting close to it requires exponentially more energy. Maybe the displacement canon and the proto teleporter can only reach the fringe regions that are “closer” to our dimension. After all, there’s no way to reach Nihilanth from anywhere Barney and Adrian ever enter Xen

As for why it only Covers the Torso as opposed to being a full suit is it is more centered on being a combat vest system, think something like a flak vest, it’s there more to stop rounds. Displacement gun counter argument:
    1. Lambda teleporter is their first stable teleport tech. It can keep a portal open for long amounts of time, powered by earths resources.
    2. Displacer cannon is a prototype gun like the portal gun. Developed after discoveries from the lambda teleporter.
    3. It is powered by a xen crystal. If you remember, the first experiment we did in the game was to test the "purest sample" of xen crystal ever and it opened up a lot of portals.

      4. The collars could have absorbed the very power themselves, explaining the differences in the charging methods between the games and could have been used for mind and attack control by the Nihilanth.
      5. Gonomes could be a result of a zombie with high enough nutrition to develop. In black mesa all there was were some security guards, grunts and some defenseless scientists. along with a hell lot of corpses meaning FOOD!!! This might also explain the sleekness of fast zombies as they have rapidly adapted, or are a different variant that the protagonists have not seen in Xen yet. Additionally the rebels in ravenholm before the shelling might have been armed so they could lower the amount of zombies by a certain ratio

  • @clasher138
    @clasher138 Год назад +42

    The zombie thing is easily explained. The combine can easily alter the genes so the zombies don't get too powerful as gonomes. That doesn't mean other things aren't possible though. Or fast and poison headcrabs already existed and we just never found them in Xen. Xen is presumably a massive place.
    As for the teleporter in blue shift there is likely a crap ton of machinery under it that allows it to function. It's just easier to start up for some reason. It also ties into Half Life 2 where Xen is used to teleport to other places on earth.
    Also there is a portal gun in that universe so it's not too crazy to think Black Mesa was experimenting on something similar.

    It's possible that the Xen in Half-Life and the Xen in Blue Shift and Opposing Force are different levels of Xen.
    Barney and Adrian never get teleporters, they have to rely on moving around Xen manually until they find a portal back onto Earth.
    Gordon has the opposite experience, he only finds portals that lead him further into Xen and never a portal back to Earth without G-Man's assistance.
    Perhaps the route Gordon took was the only way he could get to the Nihilanth and that's why it's so hard to get there in comparison to the tamer version of Xen Calhoun and Shepherd arrive to. Counterarguments:
    1. I can agree that its a bit ridiculous, but if you think about it, if we take what we can see cheat-less in half-life, we might not even have a helmet, leaving the head open, but logically, it would have a helmet, as we see corpses in Xen with helmets and as the head is the most fragile part. Maybe, there are also other parts of the HECU equivalent (forgot the name) that we just dont see Adrien put on. It would even make sense more, as it is just a vest, but you still need to charge it. Charge a f**king vest.
    2. Maybe they need the big-ass machine because the displacer gun in not safe and can teleport you in unexpected places. It can even kill you a few times I think
    3. Again, stability. It may need a rechargable battery, but we see Barney teleport all around the place. Even saw someone else here say that a doctor at the end of the game says that Barney's lucky ti be alive and in one piece
    4. Again, saw someone else again say that they are more to help with their enslavement/being controlled by the Nihilanth
    5. Pretty sure that all the headcrabs in HL2 and onward were mutated by the combine, and instead of making their hosts turn into Gonomes, they simply stay in one stage. Plus, something else again that another person said, the same guy that said of Vortigaunts, they might just be mutated by toxic sludge or turn to Gonomes in only specific environments.
    Tl;dr - all your arguments have valid counterarguments, so I will respectfully disregard them :)

    1. It DETECTS those dangers, but how much it actually protects you from them is debatable. It might be sapping your vest energy when you stand is a puddle of radioactive snot but it's probably just injecting you with some horrifying mix of chemicals to stop you from instantly keeling over rather than ACTUALLY protecting you from the hazard. Shepard will probably still get cancer.
    2. The lambda lab uses a big machine yes, but it's possible these big machines are being used to help make those hand held machines work, or alternateively the lambda machine is older and the handheld device is a more recent development, perhaps a less stable one. Or the big machine is more powerful, more accurate, or has more features useful for research, compared to the handheld which is probably intended as a way to test the idea of making this technology something that can be used it real life situations. Also in HL1 there are many instances for teleporter balls just hanging out with nothing more than a pad under them (if they even have that). Again this could be evidence that there is a big machine running this all wirelessly from somewhere, or that the big machines are just required for different purposes, or are older.
    3. Not sure if the full might of the reactor is actually required for the machine, or if we were just fixing it to stop it blowing up. Possibly these things don't actually use that much electricy and we just needed to have the reactor working because that just where the power comes from. It doesn't take a nuclear reactor to charge a phone, but that's what happens when you plug your phone in every night.
    4. IDK. maybe the collar is only channeling electricity. Or perhaps the collar also connects to the 'vortesence' or whatever. Can't argue this one too hard as it's all made up alien nonsense.
    5. I can't back this up, and I can't remember if this was something from the beta, but i've heard that the fast and poison zombies were apparantly combine alterations to the headcrab. Even if the combine alterations thing isn't true, I'd always assumed that these were just different species of headcrab, rather than being stages of development, since the crabs themselves look wildly different, compared to the gonome headcrabs which look the same as the normal ones. As for why no gonomes appear in HL2, I can't answer, except that for maybe the gonomes again come from a different species of headcrab, or the further mutation was to do with something they came in contact with in black mesa (race x, radiation ect). Could even be the case that they only advance to the gonome stage when the conditions are right, for example if there is an abundance of food (trapped scientists in black mesa) then over time the zombie developes into a bigger stronger gonome, but if there is minimal resources (abbandoned town of ravenholm) the zombie stays a zombie, and conserves energy). But that's just my fan theory.
    Over all I think these points are interesting but not conclusive proof that the expansions aren't canon

  • @Retro9529
    @Retro9529 10 месяцев назад +2

    Possibilities for the expansions to be cannon
    1. Black Mesa is government owned, and so is the H.E.C.U marines, and it is possible that Black Mesa was working with them before the H.E.C.U started to kill scientists.
    2. In Blue Shift, the prototype they’re working on is a prototype, so there wouldn’t be a nuclear reactor powering it. The other reason is the Nuclear Powered teleporter in the Lambda Complex is a more ideal, and safe option, hence why it is powered by a nuclear reactor.
    3. The portable teleporter in Opposing Force was the prototype being built in Blue Shift.
    4. The vortigaunts since have evolved, or they naturally had that power in the first place which is quite unlikely, or the collar was just a cosmetic that enhanced their powers.
    5. The Gonomes have been killed off. It is also possible they evolved into that big poison headcrab thrower in Half-Life 2 (forgot the name).

    I will testify for the Displacer: Aperture Science and the Handheld Portal Device are both 100% confirmed canon to the Half-Life universe, so something like that is very well possible. And its completely unpredictable nature is probably due to the fact that it's so small.

  • @xxfalconarasxx5659
    @xxfalconarasxx5659 Год назад +4

    To be honest. Valve isn't all that consistent themselves really, and you can just handwave some of these as being oversights that aren't to be taken seriously. I mean, the PCV was just made the way it is for gameplay purposes. Also there are a lot of easy explanations for a lot of these apparent discrepancies. I'll list some examples.
    -I see no contradiction with the Displacement Gun. The teleporters in the Lambda Complex don't just create one portal. They create many portals AND they have to keep them open at all times. That will definitely cost a lot more energy. I'm also not sure if the reactor is just for the portals. It could be powering the whole Lambda Complex, if not the entire facility for all we know. Lastly, I'm not sure how old these portal devices are. We know that Black Mesa has been developing portal technology for quite a few years. The Displacement Gun is a recently developed prototype, and quite a faulty one at that. The primary fire is basically just a deadly energy bomb, and the secondary fire takes you to random locations at the cost of 60% of your ammo. We also know that portable portal devices are canon in this universe, at least in Aperture Science, because the handheld portal device is a thing that exists.
    -The Vortigaunt collar and cuffs can cast electricity in Half-Life Decay, but that doesn't necessarily mean they give the Vortigaunts their power. They are probably just charged with energy, the same way Alyx can charge her gravity gauntlets with Vortigaunt energy in Half-Life Alyx. Unless the game explicitly says they are what give the Vortigaunts their power, then this is just baseless speculation.
    -As for the Gonome. The absense of a zombie type in Half-Life 2 isn't really evidence that they don't exists. We don't see the Revivor Headcrabs from Half-Life Alyx in Half-Life 2, and we don't see Zombines from Half-Life 2 Episode 1 in the original Half-Life 2 either. I also don't think the Gonome is supposed to be a later stage of Headcrab Zombie. I think the mutation is a product of other Xen fauna. For example, in Half-Life Alyx, we encounter "Jeff", a horribly mutated hazmat worker who was exposed to all sorts of Xenian organisms which turned him into this grotesque creature covered in fungal-like growths. And what do you know, the Gonomes are also covered in fungal-like growths, and you do often find it where there is a lot of Xen biomass. So it could very well be that Gonomes are much like Jeff. They were probably mutated from other sources.

If Gordon doesn't need a helmet, Adrian doesn't need an entire suit. If the combine modified the eyes out of the crabs, then they could have modified the gnome gene out of them too.

    the displacement cannon could be canon, made by some random scientist like the gluon gun or the tau cannon as an attempt to compete with aperture
    though its much worse than basically any other method of teleportation, likely dosing the user or the target with radiation, as well as teleporting them to a random location in xen that could just be a death pit or a cave with no exit
    also, the lambda teleporter was the oldest and worst teleporter, as the one we see at the start of half life, made by the anamolous materials lab, is atleast 5x smaller, and only became non functional due to low quality crystals

    If blue shift isn't cannon, Barney saying: "Its me Barney, from Black Mesa" as a direct poke at the audience saying "Its me Barney from Blue shift." wouldn't make any sense. 3. The Blueshift teleporter is another can of worms but I could say it works as a Xen gateway because of the Resonance Cascade, otherwise, it would be just an Earth-side teleporter like the ones in Lambda Complex.
    4. Vortigaunt collars could just be charged like capacitors

    I think there are probably some good speculative reasons that all of these do in fact work:
    The PCV might've been developed by Aperture science after reverse engineering a (possibly stolen) HEV suit and making something more portable, hence why they work with HEV chargers.
    At the end of Blue Shift, Barney almost gets stuck in an infinite harmonic reflux, which could be a byproduct of the older, inferior teleportation technology.
    The thing about the displacer canon is that WHERE it teleports you in Xen is highly inconsistent, which shows its limitations compared to the Lambda reactor.
    As for the Vortigaunt collars, I think this was a byproduct of the Nihilinth's control over them and once the Nihilinth was killed, they were able to generate energy on their own once again.
    Something we have to consider with the headcrab zombie mutations is that in HL2, the victims are taken over by a completely different breed of headcrab, which is more a byproduct of different variations rather than an inconsistency in mutation. The reason we don't see any gonomes may have to do with the environmental conditions that would be required for one to develop.

    On the question of Blue shift using a rechargeable battery and the Lambda laboratory using a nuclear reactor could also be explained that a Portal or Wormhole can still be created using rechargeable batteries however the more energy that is put into the Wormhole makes it more stable and thus much more safe and accurate to regularly use as a means of transportation between Earth and Xen.
    Similar to how a wooden bridge can potentially still be used as a means of transportation but a steel and concrete bridge generally speaking are probably going to be a more longer lasting in addition to being able to potentially hold more weight which a similar comparison could be made to the older rechargable wormhole device found in Blueshift versus the Nuclear reactor worm hole device found in the original Half Life

    My counter arguements to this short:
    1. That isn't a bad point, but every protagionist should honestly be dead by that logic. Gordon doesn't wear any form of helmet and is still alive. That is four games of radiation exposure. Also, Gordon doesn't wear a helmet. Change my mind. Barney does go through chemicals in Blue Shift and is fine. Alyx in the newest game goes through some questionable areas, though it is just alien stuff so that is up in the air. It's not hard enough evidence for me.
    2. I never really thought about it too much. I mean in Portal they make portals like nothing and that IS canon. I like to think the Displacer teleports you randomly. Hell, it already does that and it what it does. That scientist was probably trying to get out with his new invention and created a dangerous teleporter gun. Not too difficult to believe.
    3. In Blue Shift, it's an old teleporter from like the 50s, they had to send Bareny to Xen to get a relay and signal. Plus it takes FOREVER to charge up. It was a pretty shit one where it had cool leak or whatever the part was when you have to turn the valve. Barney went through a harmonic reflux because of the teleporter. Also, I didn't know that about the teleporter at the end of HL1 actually...
    4. That is a REALLY good point. But maybe the chains give them more electric energy and no only enslaves them. They don't say they can't use their electricity without them. That is me trying to come up with something.
    5. Okay that is an easy one. The headcrabs are genetically modified by the Combine. That is why there are fast, hard shell and poison headcrabs. They probably removed that of headcrabs so the Combine wouldn't have to deal with them. Unless we want to make the arguement Half-life 1 isn't canon... which is stupid.
    I like to think the Gearbox expansions are canon.

    3. The prototype is weaker and only works for a short amount of time as it’s a prototype however the one used in half life is more effective because it’s the finished product
    4. The collars may have been used to make the energy more powerful or to help control the energy. We still don’t know what they do

    the genome is a highly dangerous form of the headcrab zombie capable of starting the reproductive cycle. Since the combine had control of the headcrabs in hl2,it would be safe to say that they would have gotten rid of the one stage that is VERY likely to escape containment and create an army of headcrabs. Even if the headcrabs evolved in ravenholme, its a bit of a gamble to say the trait of being a genome could have happened to respark in the "ability tree"
    edit: the fast zombie/poison zombie was an evolution from being in earth

  • @sen11k
    @sen11k Год назад +1

    My counterarguments:
    PCV is also rechargeable in HEV suit power stations, meaning that the army has an important role in investing at Black Mesa.
    PCV Theory: It is not specified who made PCV(probably Black Mesa, as they are giant and research many other technologies uncovered), and while it protects only the torso, it is made of like that because PCV was meant to be used in COMBAT UPON HAZARDOUS ENVIRONMENTS, meaning, it will stop a bullet to save you, and your vital organs will be safer mainly from radiation(like the lead vest of the radiologists in real life). Not to mention it is tougher in combat than HEV Suit, needing less charging stations through the whole OpFor game compared even to the first 4 parts of Half-Life base game. As for the teleporter, when Shephard uses it he falls behind Gordon Freeman, "meaning it is not safer than the portable ones". That is easily understandable when you know the concept of "two bodies can't occupy the same space", don't even need to use "G-Man interference" for knowing the issues with the argument. When the main teleporters are used they need to calculate where to go at Xen, but if there is matter interference, it calculate it further to the main teleport destiny, not to mention the test subjects use it one at a time cause they would probably turn into a paste of siamese twins if both jumped at basically the same time.
    Blue Shift: Barney Calhoun escapes with a crowbar from Black Mesa, his name is confirmed in HL2, and ask what he gives us? A CROWBAR, not only meaning he was our friend, but that he was dearly keeping a crowbar for TWENTY YEARS in memory of Black Mesa and his friends, specially Gordon Freeman...
    Decay: The only one that has no clue of canonicity, cause other team could stop the portal storm and shit, revealing the existence of Nihilant by failing. So, nah, Decay is underrated, but it is clueless.

    The pcv could just be a scaled down version of the hazard suit. Also the military wore gas masks and stuff too so im sure that would help Adrian. The displacer is super unreliable + needs ammo not only to go to xen but to go back unlike big teleporters which use xen as a gateway. I don't got anything for the rechargeable battery. I always thought that was dumb too. We know its older so maybe it never used enough power to be as predictable as the lambda complex teleporter, as shown with Barney. Id say the slave collar was to help channel the energy in a way thr nihilanth could control. Maybe it even held some in it like a battery. Id like to believe that the gonome not appearing is due to genetic modification from the combine.

    in hl1's monster of the week promos, its stated that headcrabs turn into gonarchs when they consume enough biomass; i'd imagine that gonomes are like an early phase in the transition from headcrab to gonarch, where they've consumed just enough in order to achieve basic mutation.
    in half life 2, gonomes aren't present probably due to the fact that zombies in the post-war world don't have as much access to food as they did during the black mesa incident; especially in places like ravenholm that have been headcrab canistered to hell, where there's nothing to eat because 99% of the other living creatures are fellow zombies.

    To be honest,i think all expansions are canon,and the most probable cause they have inconsistencies on them(gameplay and lore wise) is because Valve was experimenting with gameplay mechanics. If Valve _for some reason_ decides to remake the Half-life games and expansion, I'm sure they would try their best to keep it consistent in between the expansions and the main game.

  • @gobbleygourdiscursed6782

    The last one, the combine engineered headcrabs to be a better weapon, thus removing biological impulses. The gonome is needed to make a gonarch, and the combine dont want or need the gonarch, so they removed that part of the life-cycle
    And the 1st one, Shepard is wearing a helmet, tough pants, tough shirt, boots and gloves, so shepard has the proper protection needed to survive.

    Just because the gonomes only appear in Opposing Force doesn't suggest they don't exist in the later titles. The fast zombies aren't another stage of mutation, and neither are the poison zombies, they are rather bodies taken by different typed of headcrab. The classic zombies you see in later titles are likely just much more recently taken than the gonomes in Opposing Force.

    1. This is for gameplay purposes, the game would suck if you kept dying because Adrian's legs got burnt. Gordon doesn't even wear a helmet in radioactive areas so at least the games are consistent with one another. Besides, I think a trained soldier would be a little more durable to damage than a scientist however badass he is.
    2. The displacer cannon is random, they needed to transport Gordon to a specific location in the Xen so that he was able to complete his mission, whilst the gun could throw you anywhere in the dimension.
    3. I mean... you said it, it's a prototype, so it would probably require less power. And you're really saying Black Mesa making a teleporter to another dimension is on the table but them making a rechargeable battery to power it is too far-fetched?
    4. Is this explicitly said? or just implied? The collars were there so that they could be controlled, which in turn would be controlling their vortesence which is why it may seem as though that's where it comes from (kinda like a Thor and Mjolnir vibe)
    5. This is by far THE WORSE EXCUSE. First of all, the zombies we see in Half-Life 2 are all different species, not different states of the zombie (as they use different headcrabs). Considering Gonomes are stronger than regular zombies and could be a liability to the combine as they are deploying headcrabs, I don't know, maybe the race of aliens that are known for genetically modifying other species for their needs could have something to do with it.
    At the end of the day, there is no canon and it's always going to be a losing fight. We should focus on what they are instead of what they could be, they are all fantastic games in their own right and I truly believe they are all the same story. But whether it is or not does not change the overall value of said games. I love this series, it means a lot to me, but videos like this just sew the seeds of doubt. I hope I didn't come off as pretentious but I just wanted to show that you could probably have a back-and-forth about this until the end of time, making up excuses to fit your narrative, which isn't what any of this is about.
    Love you lymphoid and love your videos, always will!

    HEVs were probably way too costly to produce on a mass scale, hence why black mesa only had enough for a small team despite having direct access to the resources required. This justifies the need for the PCVs while also explaining why Gordon was still able to hold is own against trained men, as his gear was superior.
