I had issues with control in this game until I figured out that you have to brake while keeping the gas down, made the game way more fun and now it's one of my favorite dreamcast racers!
Have to say though me and my friends played this game to death in 2 player and absolutely loved it. Broke the triggers on the controller a few times out of sheer aggression. Great side by side battles to the finish line. The controls take a bit of getting used to but once you nail em...
This was my first semi realistic racing game I have ever played back in 2000. I remember buying this game and a rumble force steering wheel with pedals. I raced at Homestead (Miami) a lot in this game and probably logged easily about 3,500 hours into this game. On the dreamcast controller... The game's controls were awful. With the wheel, the game came to life. I remember doing a couple of 200 lap races on weekends. The game definitely has its faults including loading times, frame rate hiccups, and grass causing you to completely slow down to 20mph. Great game nonetheless. Good Times.
Sorry for being late to this..... First, your videos are great and have been for many years. Being a big CART fan when it was around (also a bit older), I think this game, though your complaints are justified, should not be classified as "Awful". There is a lot to like about the depth within the championship mode and the options available to the car. Also, when you put yourself into a full race it can be quite a nice racing experience. But even I will admit that there are definitely problems ;)
Damn, such hate for such an awesome game. Simple and straightforward. Pick your car, pick your transmission, pick your track, and race. Open-wheel arcade racing at it's finest. Graphics were outstanding and really showed what the Dreamcast was capable of. This is one of the first games that truly nailed Road America, and it's a blast to race. I absolutely love this game. Will always be one of my favorite racers.
I think it's a great game - with awesome visuals and fun gameplay... It's got a very arcade vibe and style, so it feels like a Sega arcade game... It's not perfect, but I'd still rate it 8/10... A classic Dreamcast game that doesn't get the recognition and respect it deserves.
i disagree with this review , the game it's not perfect .... it's there one ? .... but i have a lot of fun playing this game , once u get friendly with the controls , like most of race games , the championship mode are immersive , plus the cockpit view are the best one back in that days ... all oficial cars and pilots ...and as u said ...a lot of tracks , i still have it ...willing to play again !
I think the following quote from CGR's Ducati World review will work well here: "Ferrari F355 Challenge took this game, handed it its own ass, and then fed it to Seaman, also on the Dreamcast." I've seen Flag to Flag going for anywhere between one and five bucks. I played the demo on one of the Generator demo discs, and I wasn't too impressed by it either, so I've never added the full game to my collection. Another Dreamcast racer I'd recommend over this one: San Francisco Rush 2049.
Well I can't agree on this one man. Actually, this game is great with a steering wheel. The gameplay and control are nervous but overall, it is not a complete awfull game.
Wow. A game that Mark dislikes. I never thought the day would come. And I DO NOT complain that you like everything. In fact that's what I like about CGR. He finds the good in every game, even if he may not personally prefer it.
That game looks great. I don't know what your problem with it is mark. Learn what mechanical grip is and how to drive and you likely wouldn't have bashed it so hard.
@DragnSly I dunno, preference? I pick certain games for content, such as certain cars and tracks, and if it's for the system that I have. I don't usually go for F1 racers.
I miss my Dreamcast... such a shame it tanked the way it did. Sonic Adventure, Shenmue, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, NBA2K+, NFL2K+, Power Stone, Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive 2, Grandia II, Skies of Arcadia, Jet Grind Radio, Phantasy Star Online, Unreal Tournament, Tokyo Extreme Racer, several faithful ports of Capcom arcade fighters... Boy, I loved that thing. Although.... Seaman still scares the living sh*t out of me to this very day. -=shudder=-
Sounds like the same control issues the DC version of Daytona has. I've heard it's fine when using a wheel; but using the standard controller, it's really hard to get a feeling for what you're doing. On tight turns, it almost feels like you're steering a block of ice.
@Ioselash well, to be fair, I play mostly RPGs and adventure games, which have a lot of emphasis on story and character, of which there is none in driving games...
I got this as a my lauch day game with the dreamcast, and god is it boring. I got it thinking you could race people online, since dreamcast was talking about online play. Man did we need youtube reviews in 1999.
... late to this. it's your review that's awfully awfull because this game isn't bad at all - not if you're a serious racer. it isn't supposed to be easy because it's a sim' lol of sort's
Of course CART would look similar to F1, it was basically the American version of Formula 1. Higher top speeds, lower cornering speeds, all with a fine balance between ovals, street circuits, and road courses.
I really don't get how some realistic driving games can really be so much better than others. I mean, sure, I understand how the controls can be better, but all they are are just driving simulators. How much of a difference can there really be?
Oh I remember playing this back in the day but I didn't really liked it. Granted, I'm not an F1 racing fan but I do like racing games overall but this one was just...weak.
At its time it was a good game. I liked it then. The controls were allright after you got used to it. I didn't play it since 2001 , so maybe it indeed didn't age that well... but still I kind of have to disagree here. At its time it wasa good looking fun game.
Ugh. I hate how he's saying the price on eBay is too much for this game. The value of older games rarely has ANYTHING to do with quality. For someone who has gamed for so long, and hosts a review show that puts up an insane amount of gaming videos, Mark seems rather uncultured.
@infringementMAN By that, do you mean he likes games easily, or what? If it's not that, then would that mean Naughty Bear should have a sequel with less glitches and better gameplay? (I like the idea of that game, but everyone treated it as trash, except Mark)

1:23 Nigel Mansell's moustache would like to have a word with you.

He says this game has awful controls... He hasn't played Spirit of Speed 1937 yet. 😂

What are you on about? This is one of the best technical racers ever, it requires a steady hand and u can unlock a pram if u are really good.
i disagree with this review , the game it's not perfect .... it's there one ? .... but i have a lot of fun playing this game , once u get friendly with the controls , like most of race games , the championship mode are immersive , plus the cockpit view are the best one back in that days ... all oficial cars and pilots ...and as u said ...a lot of tracks , i still have it ...willing to play again !
sega really needs to start making more racing games, it used to be what they were known for. love this game
If you use the brake and map it's an awesome game! Playing it right now and can't put it down!
There is a rapper in all of us.
This terrible game is terribly lame!
I think the following quote from CGR's Ducati World review will work well here: "Ferrari F355 Challenge took this game, handed it its own ass, and then fed it to Seaman, also on the Dreamcast."

@SoerenLorenson Fair enough, mate. In that sense, I do agree. And you might actually be right that he meant it like that.
If Mark hates your game, it's time to burn your company to the ground or consider a career change.
Well I can't agree on this one man. Actually, this game is great with a steering wheel. The gameplay and control are nervous but overall, it is not a complete awfull game.
@Croxyndul Check the Ridge Racer 7 review, I think Mark was more upset for that game than this one. XD
Wow. A game that Mark dislikes. I never thought the day would come. And I DO NOT complain that you like everything. In fact that's what I like about CGR. He finds the good in every game, even if he may not personally prefer it.

@SiGhast ...Don't get me wrong, guys. Still a big fan of Mark. CGR is very entertaining, primarily thanks to Mark's terrific sense of humor.
@rodsk8dude Yup. No matter how bad a game is, he almost always finds something nice to say about it.
Those must be the best graphics I've seen on an N64 racer..oh wait..
Sooooo let me see here. From what I could tell this is Mark's new favorite game, right?
Sounds like the same control issues the DC version of Daytona has. I've heard it's fine when using a wheel; but using the standard controller, it's really hard to get a feeling for what you're doing. On tight turns, it almost feels like you're steering a block of ice.
MOHAMMED, WE NEED 30CC's OF STEERING WHEEL FOR MARK'S DREAMCAST STAT!
I love this game, to bad Mark didn't see the light on this one, I miss his stuff though
Mark is right there is just better options available on the dreamcast when it comes to racing games
Better on wheel. But it is hard to steer at high speeds which is unrealistic in some ways.
@Ioselash well, to be fair, I play mostly RPGs and adventure games, which have a lot of emphasis on story and character, of which there is none in driving games...
More like a Super Monaco GP for Dreamcast ;)
I like this, but admittedly it has a slightly more arcade styled feel than F1 World Grand Prix or F355 Challenge.
So the cars steer just like American cars then. A pretty realistic portrayal of Indy Car racing to me
Haha Quality review and it needs too be said, Your one of my favourite game reviewers :)
I have this game for DOS it's called Indy car racing II originally but it got renamed and I don't know what it was renamed to.
Review "Spirit of Speed 1937" for the Dreamcast.
>=D
@DragnSly Well, people don't play driving games for stories anyway. The same can be said for most arcade games.
Are those flies on your helmet at 2:00?
IMMERSION!
Why the driver have some human excrements on his helmet visor?. Also, any Dreamcast review is a good review, even when reviewing a awful game.
Ferrari F355 challenge is on PS2 and works with your Logitech DFGT mark.
JJ Lehto yeeeeah! Who is now facing charges of negligent homicide for a boat crash that killed his friend.
how do you go from reviewing f1 2011 to this is insane
Haven't seen Mark dislike a game this much before.
@bobbyw223 They released a second dreamcast?? :P
you ever played track mania nations?
This is perfect after watching part 1 of his F1 2011 review
I got this as a my lauch day game with the dreamcast, and god is it boring. I got it thinking you could race people online, since dreamcast was talking about online play. Man did we need youtube reviews in 1999.
I wish Sega Ripped Mario Kart on the Dreamcast , and not wait to do it in 2010
Dreamcast
R.I.P. Greg Moore
... late to this.
it's your review that's awfully awfull because this game isn't bad at all - not if you're a serious racer. it isn't supposed to be easy because it's a sim' lol of sort's
F3555 is a sim racer and he gives that one props in this video, so I'm a bit hesitant to think this is the reason.
Do a Laguna Seca Macro review on this game
0:45 alex zanardi FTW... best drivers since turbo era...with this game you can´t go wrong !!!
@SiGhast yes it does
what a story mark!
@MrShippopi
I knew it didn't look right. Oh well.
To be fair, Daytona controls like piss too (way too sensitive), yet i've never seen anyone criticize it...
Marky Mark. :D
Aw I went to the St Louis race in 1999.
Not even Bobby Rahal and his Mustache of power!?
This game was doomed from the very begining!
Funny review:)
Next you need to avoid Spirit of Speed 1937 for the Dreamcast. Just to let you know hoe bad it is, it was published by - LJN!
STAY AWESOME! :)
hey P.Tracy was on that stupid TV show with Tanner Foust
Hear that Mohammed from Katar? Mark doesn't have a wheel for his Dreamcast. Get on it!
Are there any other Formula One racing games though ? This cart thing looks very much similar to, heh, formula one !
Of course CART would look similar to F1, it was basically the American version of Formula 1. Higher top speeds, lower cornering speeds, all with a fine balance between ovals, street circuits, and road courses.
@Bearsoup1 lol you have a good point there. sry.
@SoerenLorenson Hehehe
@MrSnake3602 Pretty much.
@MikamiPro Mark likes racing games D:
mOAR Dreamcast reviews!
@MrSnake3602 and I do.
I really don't get how some realistic driving games can really be so much better than others. I mean, sure, I understand how the controls can be better, but all they are are just driving simulators. How much of a difference can there really be?
KNOWING IS WHAT!? KNOWING IS WHAT?...;-D
I'm watching so early its only in 480p
Oh I remember playing this back in the day but I didn't really liked it. Granted, I'm not an F1 racing fan but I do like racing games overall but this one was just...weak.
@Snotnarok I think you can lend games to him for reviews....I think?!?!?
0:18
ringtone!
Are you gonna review Forza 4?
@BurningArmyman Value and quality? No. Value and availability (rarity), yes.
At its time it was a good game. I liked it then. The controls were allright after you got used to it. I didn't play it since 2001 , so maybe it indeed didn't age that well... but still I kind of have to disagree here. At its time it wasa good looking fun game.
I am appauled you don;t like it. I loved it.
42.5% of marks comments are "review this game!" He'll never ever review by request, you want him to review a game? Donate it.
I still don't know why you don't like this game. I have it, music is great and cheesy.
1080 we meet....wtf...we don't meet too often
LORD KARNAGE !!!!
I will come out and say that this game dont look any better then the f1 games on the n64.....
Click 2:17 to clean the display window.
Is that bird droppings on the screen?
Small debris and general dirt particles.
Ugh. I hate how he's saying the price on eBay is too much for this game. The value of older games rarely has ANYTHING to do with quality. For someone who has gamed for so long, and hosts a review show that puts up an insane amount of gaming videos, Mark seems rather uncultured.
review desert bus... please
@infringementMAN
By that, do you mean he likes games easily, or what?
If it's not that, then would that mean Naughty Bear should have a sequel with less glitches and better gameplay? (I like the idea of that game, but everyone treated it as trash, except Mark)
Is it bad I know pretty much all those drivers?
i race with richie hearn in an iracing league lol
After reviewing F1 2011, this might be a pain to the eyes and the awful gameplay literally.
i want dreamcast 2
LeMans on Dreamcast looks and feels much better.
SUPER SPEED RACING ssssuuuperr ssspeeeedd rrracccinngg.
PHIL COLLINS FTW
@bbutters2 I think he insisted he doesnt' want 'lends' because he takes a while to review them. Donate or that's it I think
Did anyone else thought it was a great idea to review this game after f1 2011?xD
