This was brilliant when it came out. I loved Tokyo. My brother was actually in Japan at the time, and I'd drive around where he was, imagining what he was seeing there :)
I remember I had waited months for the release of MSR back in 2000. And as I finally get a grip on this game I played it for hours and days in pure amazement. The graphics, the features and the song collection were way ahead of its time. And then came Shenmue...
I had a first edition of this game and that edition came with a glitch in that every single race awarded you massive amounts of kudos points everytime so progression was made much easier. It was still a game that its moments where u tore your hair out but progression was generally fairly straight forward. The devs realised and changed this so that later editions of the game didnt have the glitch and u had to earn EVERY single kudos point but this was the days before downloadable updates so those of us that preordered and had a first edition got the easier game:)
@@brandonfarfan1978 the first edition has many glitches and problems though, there is an article at The Dreamcast Junkyard titled "The Bugs of MSR" which you might want to read before you buy an early PAL copy of the game. The NTSC version which I have is way better and has much less glitches (it came in January 2001 though, 2 months after the first PAL version). Nowadays you can even play it on a mobile phone using a Dreamcast emulator.
I still listen to this music today, it was that good. Club paris alone is a great driving song that just somehow captures the essence of night time driving.
The really cool thing about MSR is the real-time simulation which is missing from the PGR games. It also simulates the length of each day very accurately, so the days are long in summer and short in winter. Very cool, and I have not seen any other driving game do this.
For it`s time this was a stunning game with lots of detail, even down to the radio channel losing signal when going under bridges which was brilliant (I know seems daft). Fantastic game, makes me want to dig out my Dreamcast from the cupboard again!
Bizarre improved on METROPOLIS STREET RACER in many ways with the PROJECT GOTHAM RACING series, especially with having most of the major exotic car licenses, but the one thing I still love about the original MSR is the atmosphere, with the local DJ's and the "real time" lighting and some aspects of the weather system, especially in any race with fog. I even like most of Richard Jacques' soundtrack, "Am I Only Dreaming" more than makes up for the rather lewd country song "Long Long Road".
The lack of real-time in PGR always meant it lacked a certain magic MSR had. The attention to detail in the real-time simulation was stunning; it was months before I noticed that MSR simulates the time of day absolutely accurately; reflecting the actual length of days at the time of year! A stunning detail which I suspect most people did not even notice. Jacques music is pretty damn catchy (and in some cases damn funny) The free roam mode was awesome too.
They actually went to the cities in the game taking pictures of everything so the game's scenarios were as authentic as possible. Also, the music kicked ass. This game totally blew away Gran Turismo's rear back then IMO.
Yes. While PGR improved on it visually, MSR simulated the time of day (and the time differences between London, San Francisco, and Tokyo), it did this so accurately that whatever time of year you played it, it would accurately reflect the time of day, including the length of day/night. An astonishing detail which I have never seen since. Much as I enjoy PGR, the lack of real-time lighting means it lacks something that MSR has.
Omg!! I just found your channel when i went to look for an old starlancer dreamcast review!!! I looooove these reviews :) starlancer and metropolis street racer were my faves on dreamcast. Msr is one of my alltime fave racers :)
8 reasons why this is the best racing game in the history of video games. 1- Awesome easy to listen pop/jazz music with good vibes, mostly. 2- The perfect difficulty to keep you interested and making progress at a reasonable pace without it being too easy or too difficult. 3- Extremely fun once you get familiar with the physics of the game. 4- Perfect balance between simulation and arcade 5- Real streets with graphics that have aged extremely well and have this old retro charm to it now while still looking more than decent. 6- Its simplicity, not a crazy amount of options and customization to get lost in, straight forward old school gaming (which means more time playing and less time adjusting parameters, etc) 7- A truly groundbreaking game. 8- Dreamcast :)
The radio in this game was so amazing. What a soundtrack. Best part of the entire game. MSR can't hold a candle to Sega GT in the gameplay and depth department, though.
Oh Bizarre Creations, how much I miss you! How much I wish you were here to develop the next PGR! I am worried with others being at the help we will get just another burnout clone with NITRO NIIIIIITROOOOO NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITROOOOOOOOOOO, and other such silliness. Please come back!
MC Momo."Let's get it on tonight!" "Forget about him, I'll treat you right Baby turn out the lights, and we can get it on tonight!" "The clock went 10 when we got to my mansion the only thing I could think about was expansion" That song so needed a proper music video to go with it.
Metropolis Street Racer is Project Gotham Racing. When the first PGR came out, OXM had an article about it. MSR is the original PGR. Bizarre decided to scrap MSR, and basically reboot the game with better ideas. The Kudos isn't just a similarity, the MSR game is what PGR was originally. And, for those who think this game takes forever to get through, play PGR4. That game never ends! I've been playing it for a few years, and I still have not reached the end of that game.
I remember this game. I played it a few years before i emmigrated to Japan and was fascinated by the tokyo courses and music cant believe so much time has passed.
It's not about being redundant, it's about giving a better understanding of the game in review, which is the real problem with many of CGR Undertow's shallow reviews, which have become a consistent thing. With this Metropolis Street Racer video, there wasn't a single Lord Karnage or Vextrex reference mentioned, but even with them in abundance, they don't stop Mark from delivering rich, detailed reviews.
One of the greatest games of all time, taught me how to play racing games as a kid, gran turismo was great yes, but this felt more rewarding and even though in my opinion it was tougher it also felt more laid back than gran turismo, this really doesn't get the recognition it deserves and a lot of modern racing games could learn a thing or two from this little gem of a title!
+Chris Hooton Yeah, I have a lot of respect for MSR, one of my key gaming moments! I enjoyed MSR far more than the first PGR, Since PGR lost that risk factor! My favourite driving game is PGR 3, then PGR 4, then MSR! As you say, one of the best driving games ever made!
Limted, could be...but there certainly are some really good CGRundertow video reviews even with the 3 minute limit (if there is one). It's just that there are more shallow ones than detailed ones. A lot more.
Love/d MSR, the game really demonstrated the leap from PS/Sat?N64 to next gen. I don't think the PS2 had anything to compare to it, though the Xbox got the sequels, PGR and PGR2. But they lost something in the translation and though looked class, weren't as enjoyable as MSR.
spot on!. I got PGR without knowing the connection but after not very long playing it I was like... wait.. did my research and it bought a smile to my face. Well played what they did with the name as well Metropolis (Superman), Gotham (Batman). PGR as you said just wasn't as enjoyable, although it's IMHO the closest a racing game it's been to MSR in terms of fun, etc.
I remember playing this on a demo disc...put the controller down...jumped on a bus....rode for an hour to ebgames....and bought the shit out of this game. Loved it.
Yeah I meant the same as the time on the console. It's cool to see the same sunlight in-game as it is outside. Using your IP they could probably make the weather the same too.
Played this sooo much back on the Dreamcast, easily one of the best racing games around. One nice little feature was that Big Ben would actually chime the hours...
This was the 1st Project Gotham Racing just with a different name!I loved the real time weather & day/night mechanic,if it’s raining in London when your playing the game as long as you’ve set your console clock correctly it will be raining on track or whatever the real weather is at the time your playing,I don’t think project Gotham Racing series kept with that feature which is weird because it a was dope AF feature
Oh, I have nothing against the reviewers, for I'm sure they can all do well. I care very much for the CGRundertow group, since they give me something to watch . And like forms of entertainment (educational or not), I'd very much like to see things improve. They certainly have potential.
Yes, I know that Mark's not perfect, but his reviews are still informative. I, too, would love to hear more about the game modes featured within each title. Important information for these games are needed to convince gamers to buy or rent them.

Hey Mark you know what you should do? You should see if you can get yourself a copy of Shatterhand for the original Nintendo Entertainment System. I've always loved that game, and I'm sure you would too. I know you're not the best when it comes to platforming games, but you should check it out regardless.

Yeah, there was something about PGR that just never made it live up to MSR standards for me. Damn, I spent so much time playing this game when it was released back then. It may possibly have my favorite soundtrack of any racing game that I've ever played. Great collection of songs. Hard to believe that the same dev that created this could make a game as awful as Blur.
I think i can remember playing this game... i think, or something like it, it was one of my Favorite for about 2 weeks until i bought and played midnight club and nfs hp3.
