    Quick tip if you downshift while braking it acts as an engine brake, allowing you to slow down faster. No, it won't damage your transmission.

    No need to release the gas pedal for everybody wondering... just shift while you have your foot on the gas... shifts very quick

    • @SummerFunMan
      @SummerFunMan 10 лет назад +6

      Yeah, just as quickly as a *regular* automatic does (whether on its own or as manually requested by the driver).

    • @SummerFunMan
      @SummerFunMan 9 лет назад +2

      If it were manual with a clutch (lower-case C) pedal, Ujwal Thakur, then if shifting never needed it it would obviously be just for starting and stopping. But this type of transmission is automatic.

    • @SimpleSumm3r
      @SimpleSumm3r 8 лет назад +1

      ah thanks for clearing up my mind. i though you have to let go the acceleration and step on the clutch to shift like normal stick shift cars.

      "Like normal stick[-]shift cars," SimpleSumm3r? What supposed "other stick-shift cars" (stick-shift consumer vehicles in general) are you supposedly comparing against, since this vehicle is an automatic?

    With the automatic transmission from years 2007 through 2015 G35/G37 sedan or coupe and the renamed Q40 sedan, when you move the gear selector to the left "DS mode"you do not have to shift the selector plus/minus or sport package with the paddle shifters. Just simply floor the gas pedal with gear selector to the left. DS mode is Dynamic Sport mode. The transmission will still change gears in a rev- match high performance auto sport mode. Normal drive mode : move selector back over to the right.

    • @korguenkomodo
      @korguenkomodo  10 лет назад +5

      Gregory Jones yes you are correct... that's if you leave it in the DS mode... the revs will stay higher and the engine feels more responsive.... but from that mode if you shift then you activate the shifting mode.... I had fun with my G but no longer have it since it was rear traction and sucks in snow...

    • @MrGJones-qt4pw
      @MrGJones-qt4pw 10 лет назад +1

      Most rear drive vehicles have difficulty or no traction in the snow. However good all season / good snow tires will or help you get through or tire chains or tire straps. Also you can rent an AWD or 4wheel drive vehicle just before the expected forecast per day, per week or per month during the winter snow months and keep and rest your RWD until Spring. I had a co-worker trade a practically new Mercedes Benz C350 RWD 8,000 off a loaded C-class sedan to include navigation after five months in his possession. I told him you could have rented a day before or within that day based on available or reserve an AWD type vehicle for the snow forcast. He rolled over a lot of negative equity at the same MB dealership for a used front wheel drive Lexus ES. WoW'

    • @SteevK69
      @SteevK69 6 лет назад

      Mr. G. Jones: The opposite is also true - you don't have to move the shifter to DS to use the paddles. Just use them. Trans will stay in manual mode temporarily - until ground levels out/1 min(+/-) without shifting/ come to a stop, etc. This is great for quick brake assist, or passing. I owned a G35S from 2003-2007, and a G37S from 2007 to 2018, traded on Camaro SS. Same works for Camaro, but you MUST shift if you pull shifter to right - like G35...
      ALSO: Not sure if G37 does this, but Camaro does - if you hold left paddle (or hold shifter in downshift pos) for about 2 secs, it will downshift to the lowest gear it can tolerate at the speed you're going...

    I wish you would've covered downshifting a little more. IMO the main advantage of good paddles is being to downshift crisply during heavy braking in corners so you're already in the right gear when you get back on the gas. Everyone is so focused on the upshifts.

    There's definitely a delay shifting with the paddles vs shifting with the stick in the G37. I use the paddles occasionally, but it's annoying having the car shift 1000 rpm later.

    • @SteevK69
      @SteevK69 6 лет назад +1

      @GoFightNguyen00: I almost never use the paddles or shifter to up-shift. I like the way the computer does up-shifts - if foot's in it enough, shifts at red line, loses 800-1100 RPM per shift. I do keep my left hand on the paddle, for pre-turn engine braking and it sets up for fast corner exit.
      Hint: if there's a delay, shift earlier - but keep gas pedal pressure on.

    I can drive a stick, no problem; however, I love paddle shift "manu-matic" cars for some reason. In fact I'll have my 7 speed paddle shift/auto G37S by Friday hopefully :D If you want to play racecar, you can, or if you just want to relax and not have to shift, that's also an option. I know a lot of purists are soooooo anti paddle shift and CVT, but hell...they're fun to drive and you have the option to go fully automatic if you're feeling lazy. It's not exactly the same feel as driving a true 5 or 6 speed MT, but to me that's no reason not to get a specific car if that's the car you want.

      No *manual* clutch, anyway. But automatic-based transmissions like this one (either planetary or DC) *do* have clutches (just that they're automatic ones). This *is* automatic--or semiautomatic.

    • @SteevK69
      @SteevK69 6 лет назад

      MaxOnTrack: It IS an automatic. The only thing is that the paddles, and the ratchet (DS) in the console make it easier to manually shift it.
      I had always wanted something like this. From the 3AT in my 1967 4-4-2 to my 1980s Camaros, to 1990s Eclipses, they were hard to manually shift without going more than 1 gear or ending up in neutral. Sometime around 1970, GM offered a "His-n-Hurst" dual gate shifter. It had one gate that was like a normal auto - down to D (like G35-37 and Camaro) then you pushed it to the right into a jagged path or gate which made it easier to shift one gear at a time. Now, they've added a ratchet gate +/- and returns to center. These are pretty wide spread nowadays (except Ford!?!) Soon after, they added paddles, thinking it is safer keeping both hands on the wheel - especially for spirited driving, like shifting manually...

      @InfernoRed54 as you slow down, it will downshift, just like in automatic mode. Manual mode (DS & +/-) won't upshift by itself. If you stop for a moment, like a stop sign, it will start in 3rd. BTW, it never downshifts to 2nd by itself - in either mode.

    Two questions:
    1. Does it hold the gears in manual mode when you hit the limiter or does it upshift automatically?

      korguenkomodo A lot cars with an AT do shift up automatically when you hit the rev limiter and down at very low rpm in order not to stall the engine. Even in manual mode with paddle shifters. That's why I asked. Good to know this one doesn't.

    ayee I got a question... In my 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS, it has paddle shifters. & I'm only 16, (I know how to drive stick, but not daily driven) & how do I use the paddle shifter? I know how to activate it by going to D (Drive) and push it to the right. It says 1 (as in 1st gear) in my speedometer area. Do I need to up-shift using the paddle, or I just drive (as in just go) and shift using the paddle when I need to? & also, will it downshift by itself when I'm stopping/slowing down? & do I need to go on a COMPLETE stop to change back into regular D (drive mode). thank you.

So people say that when driving iin regular D there is alot of lag when hitting the gas pedal. Ssy u were going around 40mph then suddenly brake and hit the gas again, it would take a good second or two for the throttle to respond. Henry Huang agree. There is a lag. There is a TSB that has slightly improved it. You can get an aftermarket tuner "ECUtek or Uprev" and they can make the throttle more responsive. But the 7AT is kinda so so in shift response and knowing what gear to be in. It's livable and you get used to it, but slightly annoying. at least for me.

      You shift one gear down as long as you're not highly revved already. It doesn't matter what gear you're in to go fast. Your car does have a power band though which is the range of speed in which the car has the best performance. Down shift in different speed ranges to see what area is your power band. It should be between 30 and 70 mph.
