One of the best do it yourself videos I've ever watched. Very detailed but love how you breezed through the removal and assembly. A lot of folks make you painstakingly watch through the bolt removal.
Thanks MasterJacks, you saved me AU$910 a mechanic quoted for the job. I cannot believe, the noise is gone. Before watching this video I was thinking the engine was about to quit anytime on road, I was driving always on the left lane just in case. @ idle the noise was terrible, one day a guy at a park yard told me not to drive the car with that noise, something bad is going inside the engine.I've learnt something today!!!
Excellent video. Speeding up the tedious parts makes a massive difference to us viewers, and you didn’t rattle on for 5 minutes beforehand. Tackled mine the other day. Interestingly, no gasket listed on Australian models, and also i found another drain petcock down next to the oil filter.
Excellent DIY on water pump replacement. Those Toyota 3rd generations SUV’s are well known for this problem. I bought a 2006 model 8 years ago. There’s been numerous issues from Emission system, to burning oil, & water pump noises. I could hear the noise since day one I bought it. I ignored it cuz it wasn’t leaking, just that horrible grinding noise . It just gave up as I speak 8 years later. It leaks and needs replacement. I might not even fix it, but get rid of it, cuz the rust ate this car alive. They’re horrible for withstanding against temperature & humidity changes. They rust like crazy. I can admit that This generation of Toyota SUV’s are the worst cars ever made by Toyota that puts their name and reputation at question. Don’t buy from 2006-2012 my two cent advice. Thanks for the video ❤
I'm eternally grateful for your tutorial....you were detailed and didn't skip a step. I had to fix my friends 2006 rav4. before I decided to do it, the dealership wanted 890 for the job. I bought an oem water pump for her for 30 on eBay and used your tutorial. thank you and I'm definitely a subscriber. my friend thanks you also she just started working as a nurse and did not have the 890
Going to tackle this problem tomorrow on my daughter's car . Great video, feel a lot more confident in completing the job after watching this video.. Thanks mate
I just replaced one on my daughters' 2009 V6, its close but you dont need to remove the alternator. You do need to remove the engine mount also a belt pully and tensioner. Some of the bolts are behind the water pump pully, it needs to be unbolted, I couldnt remove it by itself, it came out with the pump. the V6 pump is bigger and has two gaskets, one on each side of the metal gasket. You do need to move the motor up & down do access the bolts & remove parts. It took about 3hrs to remove, about the same to reinstall with cleaning and preparing. I can see why shops charge as much as they do for this job. Thanks for the video!
Daughters 2011 Rav4 lost pad material on her rear brake passenger side. Metal to metal contact it sounded like you described. Jack up the front and rear and spin the wheels by hand see if you hear it!
Thanks for the video, super helpful.I just subscribed! This was a fairly easy job. Here's what I did that that worked great on my 2009 rav4 2.5L. I didn't have to remove the engine mount or the tire or bottom support. I only removed a couple clips (center button pushes in then the clip can be removed easy) on the top rad cover and bent it back a bit to expose the 10mm bolt for the water reservoir. I removed the water reservoir(2 bolts), alternator(2 bolts), small bracket that held the wiring for alternator(1 bolt), bottom rad cover/cowling and panel in the wheel well( center of clip pulls out then the clip comes out). I didn't remove the tire. Petcock turns counterclockwise and I put a hose on the petcock and drained directly into an old antifreeze container. Mine was a bit stiff so I used a wrench to wiggle a tiny bit then undid by hand. Did almost everything except the bottom bolt from the top side and torqued everything from the top side with my 2 foot long 1/2 torque wrench to 15 ft lbs. Surprisingly easy considering how tight it is in there. No sealant on mine as it had that black stuff on the metal gasket. No leaks so far. I also replaced the serpentine belt tensioner as the bearings were going on it as well. 1-12mm bolt in the middle of the tensioner to remove, super easy to do. I found the critical thing was the total length of the 12 mm socket/ratchet combo that had to fit between the engine and the side of the engine bay. Too short and it wouldn't sit on the bolt right, too long and it wouldn't fit in the space. My deep sockets didn't fit, so I used a 3/8 socket, a 3/8 to 1/2 inch adapter, and thinner ratchet worked fine. I also used a 1/4 socket, 1/4 to 3/8 adapter and a 3/8 thinner ratchet worked fine as well. Once the bolts were loosened everything was easy to remove by hand.
That’s excellent, I was trying to remove water pump without removing the engine mount and tire but the problem is to remove the belt before you remove the alternator how did you do that?
Great video, nice work! Had no clue that those motor mounts could be removed like that. Looks like that could make the otherwise torturous alternator replacement much easier.
thanks for a great DIY tutorial video...good to know how to do it but this will be a stressful job for me ...definitely I will hire my mechanic co-worker to do it..
I cleaned off the old RTV as best as I could, and I replaced my water pump with an Aisin, and it is leaking coolant from the metal gasket. Would you recommend using RTV?
Job well done indeed Master Jacks (!) n going fast with those NOT so important clips. NOW one MORE point would like 2 convey to you is thermostat's functions are so critical to overall engine cooling, so EVEN if it was a bit longer to produce video, some viewers, some or lots of us, do NOT mind if U ALSO changed thermostat at the same time, seem like perfect opportunity, would have been even better video, cz changing new thermostat, new water pump, what could can go wrong for long time? Chaing water pump and new theomorstate is an excellent idea, seem to be wide consenses out there. CA, USA
Toyota actually calls for RTV rather than a gasket. They specify a 2.2 - 2.5mm bead of Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, 3-bond 1207B or equivalent. The water pump came with a gasket, and it's probably enough, but a little RTV is good insurance for a job buried deep in the motor. Didn't want to do it twice, lol.
I have a similar noise in my vehicle is also a RAV 4 2011, apparently the water pump has not failed in the sense that it does not boot water the vehicle does not heat up but if there is a strange noise, now with your video and other videos I have seen I have confirmed that it is this and I will proceed to buy the water pump, you know what is the original code to buy the quality water pump, Sorry a little for my English but I'm from Chile, I read that this van has no big problems apart from the water pump that would be one of its greatest maintenance, again grateful for your video and I will tell you how it went with the repair
I would just Google "2011 rav4 genuine oem water pump". OEM means it's an original factory part. Be sure to look for the right one, 4 cylinder vs 6 cylinder.
Based on a close look at pic, I think he was using after market, CZ toyota genuine water pump likely at least twice, if not 2.5, more... I am sure it was not toa yo water pump part.
Great tutorial! Any tips on loosening the lower screw from the generator? 😬 It’s pretty much stuck and I can’t get much leverage there because of lack of space.
Hmm...if it's really tight I'd make sure to use a six-point socket so you don't end up rounding the head and causing more trouble. Try finding the magic length socket or extension that clears the pulley but still gives you enough space to get a long ratchet or breaker bar on there between the inner fender well. That's a tough one, good luck!
Alsome video think I have the same problem. Just wondering how long it took you. How long to you think it would take some one without a lift and only hand tools.
@@njsongwriterI don't know that it's normal, but not too surprising. This vehicle is now 11 years old and probably needed a coolant flush 5 years ago. Bad coolant is hard on metal spinny parts.

If car stationary with engine running, rev it, does noise increase with revs? - its engine related. Press clutch down, does noise go away with clutch held down? - maybe clutch release bearing. Other thing causes scraping sound is if small stones get stuck between brake disc & back plate but only sounds when moving
I forget to mention my vehicle is automatic transmission. The noise is coming when engine is on and stationary and even when driving.the noise sometimes is there and sometimes no noise.it has make me mad.
Try your mechanic dot com. I wasn't able to get the last bolt on my alternator. They come to you and cost way less than the dealer. This guy really makes it look easy, though. He's good.
Nice video, but disconnect the negative, not the positive. This video will probably be responsible for a couple hundred burnt wrenches. Good camera angles, one of the few videos I have found that clearly show the tensioner on this model Rav4.
Good clarification. That having been said, if you can disconnect the positive (without shorting the wrench to the chassis) the rest of the work on the alternator will be harmless. Just pointing that out to the lay-reader afraid of getting zapped. It's all in series so opening the positive or negative has the same effect once disconnected. Nice catch!

Outstanding tutorial. Great angles, excellent editing. Just as good as a Pro Mechanic. Two Thumbs Up
Almost the same job as our 2015 Rav4- another Water pump bearing issue that started around 40K- Known problem on these. Nice video

Awesome video, I have a 2004 Rav 4 and looked everywhere on how to get this done. Your video was what I needed Thanks so much!
I like how detailed you explain things.

Putting belt over water pump rather than over tensioner pulley when refitting is a top tip & looks way easier

Should you replace the pulley or reuse? Does it matter?
Since the bearing for the pulley is housed within the water pump, you're okay to reuse it as long as it doesn't have any physical damage.
