I did the 100k tune up plugs wires etc etc and it was still chugging at startup, running like garbage so I decided to try this next. IT WORKED! I cleaned the throttle body out, did about 80mph on I95 for about 3 miles or and now the Rav4 runs great with smooth startup. Thank you very much!!!!
Thanks, Jack! I replaced the plugs, PCV, air filter, and cleaned the MAF and throttle plate today. 2008 Rav4 with 98k. Runs like new now, idle and throttle response is nice and crisp. I appreciate the time you took to make the video!
MasterJacks, to clean the MAF properly, just take out the two screws and then spray with throttle body cleaner. Also let it dry completely b4 starting engine.
I'm working on my daughter's Rav4 2006 that's running very poorly. She got a new Corolla but will sell the Rav4. this video will be very helpful. I replaced plugs / coil. Improved but still not ok. Thanks for the video.
Once again MJ thank you. Our 08 Rav4 213000 miles never touched throttle body, intake, MAF, & Injectors. Only added some Sea Foam occasionally to fuel system.
I just took my 2016 Rav 4 with 35000 miles for its last free oil change at the Toyota dealer where I bought it new and tire rotation and balance on 2/8/21. It is now out of its warranty now. In about 15 minute they come to me and tell me that they have done a free inspection and have looked at and found that my throttle body is all sooted up and the injectors are clogged and need cleaning. I ask how much, it is $220 for one and $115 for the other. So I tell them thanks for letting me know and I would take care of the problem when I get it home myself. They say it will be finished just as soon as they run it through the car wash. Stopped on the way home and got a can of throttle body cleaner and injector cleaner to add to the gas. Got home, popped the hood, removed everything to get to the throttle body on the back side of the engine, could not see where any of it had been removed to inspect it where they could tell it was sooted up. The throttle body was clean as it could be. I put it all back together, put the can of cleaner in my shop unopened and the next time I fill up with gas I will add the bottle of injector cleaner to it. The car engine runs like new so I will write this off to them trying to up sell me their service. This is the reason I do not like taking my cars in because of all the Bull Sht up selling they try to do.
Thank You! Really appreciate the video, the content you shared, and the precise manner you shared it, good visuals and information. I followed your directions step by step which resulted in clearing up problem I was having with slow idle almost to a stall when stopped at traffic lights or stop signs. I gave a thumbs up and subscribed. 2008 Rav 4, 4 cylinder with 233.000 miles on it. Muchas Gracious!
- If changing spark plugs do it after all this operation, oil also. And wash/ clean the motor area prior. Just let it soak the valves, piston head, and chamber a few hours. Better chance the carbon may release/ come loose later. May need a little starter fluid on restart. Good Video. Thx
Wow i cleaned the Throttle body as much as i can but it was soo uncomfortable im a women 5’4 tall..i didnt stick my hand inside the left side of the throttle body i didnt remember that part of the video..also cleaned the air mass flow sensor..i cant believe it what a different!.. the car respond and drive faster, the throttle looks like it was never cleaned before, it was hard for me but IT WORKED !!...the car with 165k miles felt like trash like a 200k some miles but after this it fell like it has a lot of life left..
Hey thanks for the video, I never thought of doing those things. I just replaced the alternator and belt on my 2006 Rav 4. Oh man, it wasn't easy. I will try your tune up things next. For some reason, when I start it, the idle is too high. Maybe this will fix it.
These Toyota MAF sensors are designed to be removed with the two Philips screws on top. The part you sprayed and cleaned is just the air temp sensor. The actual air flow sensor is concealed and only accessible by removing the sensor from the filter box assy.
Thanks for making this video. I have the same color 2006 RAV4, in a 4 cylinder as well. Just performed the throttle body cleaning on it and I think I solved an engine shuddering issue I had (dropping RPM's to 500 right when I slow down to a stop). Just wondering if anyone here has this car? If so, are you experiencing some whirring/humming noises coming from the driveline? Curious to know if you have the steering clunking noise as well? I haven't been able to definitively nail the origin of these problems, wondering if maybe you have... This car has been unstoppable aside from a few non-critical issues. The only downside I can think of is that I don't have the 3.5 V6, those are peppy for being an unassuming crossover.
I'm getting the shudder also. Only happens while in gear. I also think I should be getting a little better mileage than 18-19 for standard driving. I would think it should be above 20.
I've done everything as shown however did not completely eliminate shudder and RPM drop. Was told clunking noise while turning is characteristic of the electric steering. Is whirring noise loudest at floorboard behind driver's seat? Fuel pump is in tank and close to that area. My 07 recently started making a whirring noise and am thinking fuel pump is going. Also concerning the 100,000 miles Iridium plugs. NOT. Check them for yourself. I'm thinking 75,000 miles at the most. Good luck!
FYI -TSB ID #TSB-0318-08 REV1 - TOYOTA: STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT NOISE. MAY HEAR A CLUNK, POP, OR KNOCK TYPE NOISE WHEN TURN IN THE STEERING WHEEL LEFT OR RIGHT. A NEW INTERMEDIATE SHAFT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO ADDRESS THIS CONDITION.
I never had a problem cleaning electronic throttle bodies except on nissans. Always disconnect the battery before cleaning any electronic throttle body
I like to wipe off my hose connections with a soapy warm used up micro fiber towel, and then liberally use SIL-GLIDE Silicone brake grease (multi purpose) On the parts to reassemble.
Currently have a 2008 rav4 with 182,279 miles on the ODO. And idles super low to 500rpms and shakes hard as hell but goes away. But I’ve noticed that at times it would be related to my AC when I had it blasting and cranked up high. But when I turned it down it would stop shaking. With that said, im going to do exactly what was done In This video and see how it turns out.
Update: just did exactly what was done In This video and overall the shaking and low idle pretty much gone. The idle sits just at 1000rpms even when ac on, but still shakes a little when blasting. On top of this, I did this whole service just before I took it on a 6hour drive down to a border town to see my great grandparents. And drive it an additional 6 hours back. Still runs great! So yeah recommend doing this. My odometer sitting on 183,267 currently.
Wow..if you keep at it like this, your car will last you 1Million miles,at least!....I like your videos man,I am subscribing right now, just for the extra knowledge of course,I do most of my car's maintanance but tire related stuff, just don't have the tools, thanks for posting.
@ThePariss333 most probably it will,as long as you follow the maintanence schedule,to a T,it will last for a long time,I don't know about rust but when it comes to parts, yeah.
I didn't know you could use the intake manifold port to clean past the throttle body with Sea Foam!! I've been buying the Sea Foam Top Engine cleaner with the little straw attachment. Such a pain to use because of the throttle body location which forces me to turn the bottle upside down and just makes a mess. Your way is so much easier!
You did a better job than the video by dispensing the Sea Foam Top Engine cleaner over Throttle Body. Why? Coz this enigne is a Direct Injection engine. It means the fuel does NOT flow over the intake valve. If it had to, it would keep the valve clean since Gasoline is excellent solvent! Intake valve being dirty and gunky with oil that comes back from PCV valve is what causes major engine problems. That seafoam in the tank is NOT going to clean your intake valve. It will only clean fuel injectors at max. The actual complete maintenance needs Fuel Injector cleaner (in this video) PLUS Sea Foam Top Engine cleaner which will indeed go over the intake valve (coz you are mixing it with air, which does go over intake valve). What you did, was a good job. You cleaned the intake valves as well (which are more important than cleaning fuel injectors)
For the next generation Rav4 after this, does that lower hose @4:10 pretty much do the same thing and go back to the intake manifold? It's so tight back there to see where the hoses are going. 😂
Also note this generation of Ravs has many owners' complaints of spongy brakes. Once the symptom occurs (often after a brake job) the problem is virtually impossible to fix.
T@@mwngw The master cylinder is common in this generation of Rav4s . You need to get all the air outta the brake lines after the master cylinder replacement..Spongy brakes = air r in the brake lines YOUR WELCOME..
you sprayed that MAF cleaner and is dripping down moisturizing the filtering net of the air box. I can fee the awfully -toxic smell of the air blowing in the cabin. Did you think a little before doing that?
Good question, yes. The cabin air intake is separate from the engine air intake. Not only that, the 30 minutes it took to finish the job and reassemble left no residue that hadn't already evaporated. Thanks for watching.
The long crank was because he sprayed throttle body cleaner directly into the engine and it was partially flooded. Best practice is to remove the throttle body from the intake and clean it with a rag. Toyota released a technical service bulletin regarding spray cleaners damaging the electronic motor through the throttle shaft.
Hi after doing the throttle body cleaning and adding seafoam in the fuel tank car ran smoother. However after adding the seafoam to the air intake hose as described, during the process, check engine light, VSC, and 4WD, lights came on dashboard. I drove the car for a few miles, and still on. Any insights?
It's not uncommon when doing this to get a misfire code which can deactivate the stability control. If it's running smooth again, I would clear the codes with a code reader and everything should be back to normal. If you don't have one of those, you could disconnect the battery negative terminal for about 1 min, then reconnect it.
@@MasterJacks thanks that cleared up the codes. However the car still has a bit if a shudder when stopped at a traffic light. It is more pronounced when I change gears to reverse. I therefore changed the spark plugs too, and no difference. Any other thoughts?
@@jaychadderwala8975 my guess is that with a clean throttle body your idle rpm is lower. As the throttle gets gummed up, the computer cracks open the plate to maintain airflow, which increases rpm. Now that it's clean, it's idling back down to where it should. At stop light or reverse, there's a little bit of torque converter load on the engine (as apposed to being in park) and it lugs rpm down lower still. I wouldn't be worried about a shutter if this describes your symptoms. If the engines shakes quite a bit, could be you have a worn motor mount(s).
Hi Jack, very helpful videos. I have a Rav 4 2006 4 cylinders and recently replaced the alternator, and the drive belt. Note I disconnected the car battery which I believe reset the ECU. After this I noticed the engine was running rough, which got slightly smoother over the last couple of weeks but was still happening when idling. I then replaced all spark plugs which were quite worn. Now the car runs well except when idling the Revs often drop around 500 thus vibrating the car. Would a throttle body, intake, MAF and Injector service help with this? If not what else would you suggest to do? There is no engine warning light or codes displayed on my OBDII
A dirty throttle plate can cause the symptoms you're are describing. If it were mine, I'd definitely try that first. It's cheap and good maintenance even if doesn't fix the problem. A MAF sensor can also cause erratic idle issues and not necessarily throw a code. I'd try those two things first.
Hello MJ, I want to clean the fuel injectors of my 2009 RAV4 using OTC fuel injector cleaning kit. It should be connected to the fuel rail. Could you please help me to figure out how to do this. I am an amateur. Thank you in advance.
Mahinda Ranasinghe that's a little outside the scope of this video. I would recommend watching some videos by OTC and getting the help of a local mechanic or mechanically inclined friend to help you identify the schrader port on the fuel rail. I imagine OTC would be happy to provide some guidance as well if you contacted them for techincal support. All the best! MJ
Do you have to disconnect the battery in order to be able to stick your finger inside the throttle plate, I hear you should not move the plate at all, or is it just a myth?
I can only go off my own experience, but I've never had a problem manually opening an electronic throttle body. I've always done it with the key off, but haven't necessarily disconnected the battery. Once you turn on the key, it might mess things up a bit if the computer is commanding one thing and you're forcing something else.
@@MasterJacks Thank you for your prompt reply, I will now confidently clean the throttle body on my Rav4, but just to be extra safe I will disconnect the battery. Thank you again.
Randy Murray this car didn't have any idle problems, but I have worked on cars throwing codes for high or irratic idle caused by restricted airflow across the throttle plate. I recently serviced a Ford Focus with a code for "RPM out of range" and cleaning the throttle plate solved the problem. Electronically controlled throttle bodies are more susceptible to this fault. I did this particular service as preventative maintenance. Plugs and wires solve a lot of rough idle problems. Hope that helps!
Hello, if someone could reply that'd be great! Wouldn't that cleaning liquid mix with the gasoline/diesel? I am no mechanic so I figured I'd ask before attempting this :)
Thanks for the question. SeaFoam injector cleaner is a flammable additive for gas or diesel fuels. Adding it to the fuel tank is one of the many ways it can be used.
I just had to replace the EVAP valve in my 08 Rav4 and now I'm getting a lot pf shaking while idling. Would this, in theory, help with that issue or would you recommend what you did with the spark plug video? Thanks for any info
Not sure what the correlation is between the evap repair and the rough idle, but doing this procedure is good maintenance and may fix your problem. Worth a try in my opinion. Spark plugs would likely have given you a check engine light for a cylinder misfire. If it's got 100k miles on it and they haven't been done, it's also good maintenance that may improve drivability..
Hi there, great video, car is running much better now. Just one issue I’m having, when I was doing the last part, I did just as you said, had my wife hold the gas at 2500rpm and funneled in just a little bit of sea foam, my check engine, VSC and 4wd light came on and won’t turn off now. Should I be concerned and have it diagnosed? Or should I just try to reset it? Thanks for the help!
Running the seafoam treatment can cause the engine to run rough during the procedure. If the computer isn't able to successfully compensate for the erratic idle, it will deactivate some stability control systems so as not to create a safety hazard in a system it can't fully control. This also sets a few malfunction indicator lights. If it were mine, I'd clear the code(s) with a scan tool or by disconnecting the battery. From what you've said, that should clear everything up! Let me know how it goes.
I'd make sure all vacuum hoses and sensors got plugged back in. If all looks good, try disconnecting/reconnecting the battery, then take it for a drive and see if it normalizes.
@@MasterJacks I figured it out. The ECU was used to dirty throttle body. It was running like it was before the cleaning. I unplugged the battery and pulled the fuse. After 20 minutes the ECU reset itself. Everything is working normal now. It just take a like 15 minutes of driving after ECU reset to get it working again.
Why didn't you just unplug the maf and take it out to clean it? It'd save the step of taking the box off and opening it and all that. Also, do you really need to disconnect all that to clean the throttle body? Can't you just disconnect the hose and push it out of the way?
adam smith Good comments. It sounds like you are pretty meachanically inclined. I would do whatever you feel is easiest. So many people try to "save time" by working around things instead of removing a few components for better access, only to end up with bloody knuckles, broken parts, and much frustration. I'm probably on the other extreme doing a little more than is needful. Hope you found the video informative, even if you recognize a better way of doing things yourself. Thanks for watching.

I wouldn't be worried about a shutter if this describes your symptoms. If the engines shakes quite a bit, could be you have a worn motor mount(s).
@@MasterJacks thanks
how do you clean the backside of the throttle body if you don't take it right out?
I just opened the plate and did my best to spray and scrub the back side with my fingers. Worked okay for me. 🤷♂️
Can you help me with how to resolve a system too rich?
Thanks for the info !!!!!!!
You need to perform the IDLE RESET RELEARN PROCEDURE ruclips.net/video/sCsBqeZctzE/видео.html
Hello MJ,
I want to clean the fuel injectors of my 2009 RAV4 using OTC fuel injector cleaning kit.
MJ

Thank you again for the prompt reply.
Thanks for sharing.. Did you notice a difference after doing this .. you said it helps clear ruff idle.. did it help ?
Randy Murray this car didn't have any idle problems, but I have worked on cars throwing codes for high or irratic idle caused by restricted airflow across the throttle plate. I recently serviced a Ford Focus with a code for "RPM out of range" and cleaning the throttle plate solved the problem. Electronically controlled throttle bodies are more susceptible to this fault. I did this particular service as preventative maintenance. Plugs and wires solve a lot of rough idle problems. Hope that helps!
Oh yes very much so, Thank you!
Hey Jack, is throttle body electronic or cable driven? Thanks
It's motor/electric on this one
Is it ok to move plate by hand if it’s electric?
Yes, key off/battery disconnected
Change brake pads of rav4?
Also rotor oem part
You must live on a mile long dirt road. Damn that’s a dirty engine bay.
How many kilometers do you need before cleaning both the Throttle Body, Intake, MAF?
If you did this every 100k, you'd likely be staying ahead of problems.
Do you do a V6?
Can I use brake cleaner instead ???
NO
That's a hard NO!
For the intake, can I pour in water instead?
Did your 2008 have the 2AZ-FE, 4 cyl engine?
Yes, the 08' 4-cylinder is the 2AZ-FE
@@MasterJacks .....have you had any issues with oil burning? How many miles on it?
Shit... i just did this and now my rav4 2006 automatic 2.4l is idle really high. It is idling at 1.6 rpm?????
So, mass air flow sensor cleaner cannot be used to clean throttle body as well..?
You can clean the throttle body with MAF cleaner, but not the other way around.
I took it all out to clean the dirty side is under.
Can I use fuel injector cleaner instead?
❤❤😂This engine needs a Shampoo to be fresh 😊
I don't think it's a good idea to clean the MAF sensor without disconnecting it or the battery first.
That is good suggestion n thz I will remember 2 disconnects, just 4 precautions before I clean MAF sensor, vey sensitive, U can disconnect clean MAF n also with a blow it off hard on your mouth to remove some specks of dust might have build up in MAF sensor within...
Just a nickel worth of free advice?....I’d keep my engine bay clean, at least prior to opening my throttle body....just sayin...
Seria bom se fosse pelo menos legendado para o português!! Motor sujo !! Dono relachado
Great video! Love these kind of maintenance videos. You sure know what you are doing 👍
Please, I want the food on my face I wanna buy it, but that doesn’t let me know😢
Thanks 🙏
