Whenever I clean my sensor I like to take the air tube off and clean any of the dust and residue that my be inside. I also clean the the throttle body at that time but that is just me. Why not? You are already there. Keep up the good work my friend.
With 10 dollars you can buy 2 liters of isopropyl alcohol 99.9% and you can soak the MAF in 100 ml or so for about 15 minutes. You can also give the MAF little shakes from time to time for better results. That way, those 2 liters will last you 20 cleaning cycles not just 2.
A word of information. I understand that the Japanese motorcycles use JIS screws that look like Robertson or cross style. JIS or Japanese Industrial Standard are the correct fit I would expect for the Japanese Car. The advantage or the JIS over the Robertson is the torque is more effectively used on the JIS. Using Robertson on JIS may work but may be prone to stripping the head of the screw. Love your videos.
Thanks for the video! I have a 2001 Tacoma with 190,000 miles ! Running a little ruff on idle, but smooth on the highway! Will try cleaning the sensor !!
You may have to do the idle relearn. If you've changed the battery and didn't do it sometimes they will idle rough. There's videos on the Toyotas of how to do it.
Nice video friend ...... I may need to hunt around for the MAF on my Tundra. I bet each of these simple services make the performance just a little bit better!
They are not PH1 phillip head screws , Toyota usesJIS (Japanese Industrial Standard B 1012) exclusively. They have the PZ1 , PZ2 , etc. etc. They are available on Amazon or Ebay , for 10.00 or less for a cheap set.....I'm surprised you didn't know that ? But not many people do.....I clean my MAF every 3k , and spray the same CRC MAF cleaner , but I also use a fine hair artist paint brush , and gently wipe the metal sensors off with the fine brush. Road grime , oil , even pollen , etc. etc. Ive done this for years , and cleans it better than just spraying it....Then I put dielectric grease around the gasket and connection plug...I even put Marine grade heat shrink insulation at the base of the connector , where the wire cover (Flex Tubing) always separates from the end , exposing the wires at the connection. (Not bare wires) because of the heat from the engine....And I do the Coil connections with the marine grade shrink tubing. It has glue on the inside to make it water tight....Just a little info for ya....Peace.
@Peter Rudy Yeah , I've heard it from many of mechanics , and heard a lot of em say they gently clean with a fine hair detail paint brush, after soaking it with MAF CRC several times . I've been doing it for years and haven't fkd one up yet. You can sure tell that its clean with throttle response , Air/Fuel. I found that resetting the Ecu/Ecm helps it to adjust better with a blank slate. Just from my personal experience working on my Tacoma and what ever make vehicle.
Peter, I want you to know that if I ever find myself in California and my car needs service , I will wipe down the engine BEFORE I bring it to your shop ;)
The exterior wires are only part of the sensor. The other part is in the tubes. Spray cleaner on both the exterior sensor and down the tubes to clean the other parts that you can't see.
Thank you for the tutorial, so easy to follow! Quick question, could the MAF sensor cause the car to start rough and crank longer than usual only on cold starts?
Excellent to-the-point video, Peter. If I may ask, what is the normal range during standby idle? My 2000 RAV4 is a little over 2000 RPMs w/ an error code of P0505 - Idle Air Control System, any advice would greatly be appreciated. Stay safe, everyone!
Cleaning the throttle body will often increase cold start rpm. That should return to normal cold start rpm after 2-3 hours of driving or less. Cleaning both these parts using the proper cleaning liquid for each one ( throttle body cleaner for the throttle body ) should provide a smoother idle and may even slightly increase your fuel mileage.
Can u please advice me something my friend I have a 16 tab 2.5 L. After I cleaned the sensor and installed the back side of the o- ring is slightly up Does the o- ring completely go inside the hole ? Please advise.
"JIS screws" Most of the people here on RUclips have no idea what they are; they think JIS is identical to US standards like Phillips #1 "Japanese Industry Standard: Often improperly referred to as Japanese Phillips. Commonly found in Japanese equipment, JIS looks much like a Phillips screw (and even more similar to Frearson), but is designed not to cam out and will, therefore, be damaged by a Phillips screwdriver if it is too tight. Heads are usually identifiable by a single raised dot to one side of the cross slot. Most people and companies outside of Japan have absolutely no idea what they are. With the similarity in appearance to the Frearson and the Phillips the screws are often damaged in removing and installing with the wrong tools. JIS tends not to cam out like Phillips. The JIS driver can be used on Phillips quite easily but not reciprically (sic). Drivers are not easily available in North America, try your local RC Airplane hobby shop. Most RC Helicopters use JIS screws to mount the propeller. JIS-spec cross-head screws are generally marked with a single raised dot or an “X”. JIS always fit Phillip fasteners, but because of slight design differences, Phillips drivers may not fit JIS fasteners. (unless the tip is ground down a bit)." www.motorcycle.com/ask-mo-anything/difference-between-japanese-jis-phillips.html
@@davidnull5590 Your not the only one that has some rare knowledge of parts and tools attributed to JIS , If you would of kept reading some comments you would of saw where I also talked about that not being a PH1 , but a PZ1 . I bought some PZ drivers specifically for my Old Celica GT back in the day and now use them on my pops Tundra and my Tacoma. You can tell right away that they mate way better than the PH American driver.
@@lane4574 I first learned about JIS screws when I bought my first 240z back in the 80's and had a challenge getting off the screws holding down the carburetor domes.
Trying to clean throttle body on 2013 RAV4 I finally got the clamp off above the throttle body but I still cannot get the plastic hose separated from the throttle body.
My 2007 FJ is throwing CEL code P0430. It seems to happen when I city drive in "D" but not if I drive in "4". I wonder if it is RPM related, as "D" never gets over 1500rpm. I replaced my downstream 02 sensor, but that code still appears. I cleaned my MAF which was very dirty. It is still throw P0430 code. I have 170K miles so the cats can not be bad..... Any ideas....
I've watched several of your videos. You have good intentions but you always seem to omit something important. This time you missed an opportunity to clean the electrical contacts with an appropriate cleaner and them to pack the connector with dielectric grease. Simple but important.
MAF sensor cleaner is similar to electrical contact cleaner. Another You Tube auto repair person says if you have MAF sensor cleaner, you can use it for cleaning electrical contacts. Alcohol we buy in a pharmacy dept always has some water. MAF cleaner has no water and therefore will dry faster.
Cleaning the MAF sensor still fails. The 2007 RAV 4 is still failing even with a new sensor. It seems when the weather is hot here the car will not run. Then we let it stop for about an hour and clean it again. Then the car will run again then again.. HELP PLEASE.

As a thank you for buying one of their cars, dealerships will overcharge you every chance they get.
my toyota dealer in virginia charges 150 bucks to clean MASS AIR SENSOR..so lucky i know how to do it..if not, they rip me off...
They don't call them Stealerships for nothing.

Good point. You can also put the isopropyl alcohol in a small spray bottle and spray it if you dont want to take the time to soak the sensor.
@@erikcox1947 You could do that too, but it is best to let it soak, like dishes or clothes, haha.

This pretty much is a good guide for most modern cars.
Half a cannister of maf cleaner seems excessive?
The exterior wires are only part of the sensor. The other part is in the tubes. Spray cleaner on both the exterior sensor and down the tubes to clean the other parts that you can't see.

Would be useful to hear what symptoms the car might have that would prompt this cleaning and/or a recommended interval. Thx

Fantastic video. Is the chemical you used (Mass Air Flow) sensor same as Throttle Body Cleaner?
No its not .
Use MAF cleaner only .
Wouldn't you want to clean the throttle body at the same time with the sensor removed?
Thank you, that was very informational. I am about to change my air filter on my 2012 rav4 so I will also do this cleaning a well.

Please help how to remove the connector when the tab or pin is broken?
When did Toyota begin using MAF sensors in their cars? My 98 Corolla did not come with one.
Right after that....Some did , it was at the door.
Good video! It helped me clean mine.
Great videos thank you
Procedure for throttle body clean please.
Excellent. Thanks.
I stripped the screws on my honda crv, any recommendations how to remove them or what to use?
buy another crews at honda parts...or auto zone..they do have it
Great stuff thank you sir
Sometimes it's better to just buy a new MAF sensor. For my 2002 Rav4 it was only $32 here in Canada (off Amazon).
Don’t you have to disconnect the battery ?
@Evan Wood. No, you don't have to disconnect the battery. Just have the ignition off and the car not running.
Hope that helps.
Great job A+
Thanks!
you used half bottel is too much to clean maf sensor
thank you sir, this is resolve of p0107 erreur code.
Did it take away that code for you? My 04 Rav is throwing the p0171 code and is making the check engine, traction and VSC light go off

2 -3 sprays are enough. Half the bottle is total waste
This is the second video I have seen and in both the sensor was clean on one side and dirty on the other side. Hmmm?
