Thanks for the video, I just got our Opus and have now your identical set up! I've started with a slightly different process: I'm putting a scale under the cup as the shot is being pulled, I start the timer as soon as the Breville starts pulling the shot (usually a few seconds after I click the button), then aim for a first drop of coffee between 6-9 seconds which should be the sweet spot for the initial extraction, and stop the shot when I reach 1:2 ratio. Will try your technique and experiment more!
All my stuff is linked under my Bambino video. No matter what portafilter you get keep using the Breville basket with it, unless you are going to get a precision basket
Omg thank you so much. I was so frustrated from this exact setup, I finally upgraded my grinder for christmas to the fellow opus and I already had my breville bambino (NOT the plus! Everyone always has the plus 😭) and I was sticking between 1 and 2 grind size because I thought that was the espresso range. It's hard to tell with their guide. I all my shots were so turtle slow and gross and even though everyone said grind courser, I thought I was already at the upper limit so I thought there was something else wrong but I just couldn't figure out what it was. Nope! Just had to grind courser this whole time! Gonna just copy your recipe to start out lmao
I programmed my shot volume to the longest setting. I manually stop it when it has reached the volume of espresso I am looking for. I'm a bit more hands on than some! I have my finger on the button getting ready to stop it, but I'm not holding it in.
Hello! Thanks 4 the video, i was Looking for some vídeos to dial in my Fellow Opus, because i don’t know what’s wrong in my case. Let me explain, when i grind i can’t get lower than number 5 in my grinder, although I’m using good quality fresh beans. The ones I’ve got now are roasted the 28th of August and 85SCA. (I’ve used differents coffees all fresh and over 85SCA. My coffee machine is a sage bambino and I use a bottomless ikape portafilter with the básquet that came with the portafilter. I use a 20gr dose because I like a larger espresso. My complains are that first of all I can’t go finer than 5 and I think I don’t get enough crema in those settings. After it takes ages to grind 20gr. I have to press many times the button, (recently discovered that a long press is for manual stop) 😅. My grinder has a lot of retention. I’ve cleaned all parts several times and see if it was all ok with the grinder and it seems all parts are in good conditions. Long story short, under the lid of the grinder it says that the range for espresso is between 1 and 3 but I can’t grind under 5, and it takes for ever to grind and I can’t get enough crema. Hope you can give me some hints!! Thank you!!!!
Hey! All of that sounds a little off. Perhaps your grinder wasn't calibrated properly? I would contact Fellow for a replacement in that case. Question: Are you making the adjustments while there are beans in the hopper? If so you should always make adjustments when the hopper is empty AND when adjusting finer always run the grinder.
Fellow sais the problem its the outer burrs. They send me a replacement for free. But im a bit annoyed with the grinder. let's see if my mood changes with the new burrs. but im thinking to switch to a MiiCoffee DF54. What do you think?
Great stuff! If I understand right, one micro adjustment took you from 32 grams of output to 43 grams. Would you not have been within the parameters better if you simply extended to 30 seconds using the initial grind size? Additionally, I see a lot of people “re-calibrate” the Opus after adjusting but moving the adjuster from right to left. Have you found the need to do that?
Thanks for the thoughtful comment! I haven't had to re-calibrate, so far it has treated me well. I do think you are right about extending the time, but I wanted to show how to use the internal ring for the sake of the video.
@kenyastabler The Opus is a relatively low end grinder in the world of espresso, and your espresso machine is a high end model. You may have a bad match on your hands, unfortunately. You see, a grinder is just as important to your espresso quality as the machine, if not more so
Kinda crazy, and im not a fan. 25sec was your control, original shot 32g, 1 internal notch increased the shot by 11 grams. Thats insane. Thanks for the vid, confirms my issues with the same set up
Thanks, Cousin Greg. Best explanation I’ve been able to find by far.
Glad it was helpful!

That's great! Sounds like you've got a good method
@ the Opus arrived 3 days ago so I’m just experimenting for now. What brand is your portafilter?

@ thanks! I’d love to reciprocate the help, hit us up for wine tips anytime 🍷

Awesome! So glad to help
With the bambino are you holding in the shot button instead of using the preset so you can get the exact time that you want?

Thanks for video!! Question.. how many time takes grind 18g for espresso?
Thanks! I think about 20 seconds.
What methodical blend was that? Ironically enough I just so happened to order from that same roaster a few weeks ago!
I THINK it was Pink Lady

@@TokyoCoffee thanks for your answer, I’ve done watch you said and contacted with fellow directly.

A lot of people love that grinder. I've never tested it
I’ve returned The Fellow Opus, had enough with it. I all read brought a DF54. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻 hope that the DF54 don’t give me so many problems.
Eric, what is a budget grinder that you would recommend?
I've tested a few and I personally can't find one worth your time or money for less than the Baratza Encore ESP or Fellow Opus
Great stuff!

What about for a La Marzaco Micro.. espresso seems weak and we’re go between 2-3 but it seems too fine for if we went to four that seems too course …
Are you weighing out your dose?

Yeah, it's not ideal!
