    Fellow burst onto the home coffee grinder scene with the highly anticipated ODE. But since then, people have been itching for a similar grinder also capable of espresso grinding. Well wait no longer! Because with the launch of the Fellow Opus, Fellow is looking to take over the budget espresso grinder market in a similar way. The Fellow Opus carries over some of the great features of the Ode, but also leaves some out to cut costs... in this review of the Opus, we find out if Fellow have nailed it first try!

      I liked the visualization. But the example is not the best. +1 macro -2 micro is not the shortest way.
      Instead you can do -1 macro +1 micro. (-16)

      The third step is -1 macro. (-50)

There may be a couple of good points about the Opus but on the whole it is a very compromised grinder especially compared to the Encore ESP in the same price bracket. Can we get a comparison of the Ode vs the Barista Pro grinder? I am trying to decide if it is worth the upgrade since I would be using it for both pour over and espresso but if it's not worth the upgrade I would be inclined to keep my hand grinder for pour over and still use Breviles included grinder since it does a good enough job for me since most of my espresso drinks are milk based or americanos with vanilla

    • @LifestyleLab_

      If only doing milk drinks, you might be best to just keep the setup you have. However, for both pour over and espresso, the Opus is better than the Barista Pro grinder I’d say.
      I’d maybe look into a dedicated flat burr grinder like the ODE gen 2 for your pour overs, and then only upgrade your espresso if you eventually upgrade to a machine without a built in. Seems like you’re happy with the Barista Pro grinder for now

    Hi, I come to your channel because I completely trust you. In regards to this grinder, I am happy with all but the dialling in. I don't care that it is plastic and scratches because of the price. In Australia, the 1zpresso J Max is $349 and this Fellow Optus is $359. So I think this company is following a good strategy. There are two other more expensive grinders that I want to look at before I decide. They are the new range of Eureka grinders and another one I just saw yesterday called Timemore sculpture 078 but for espresso which has not been released yet.

    Should note that conical burrs handle fine grinds with less torque than a flat burr would. An espresso friendly Ode probably needs something like a 250-300W motor and that would make it louder, bigger and more expensive. We may yet see that one day but I think Fellow are wary of pushing up their selling price as of yet.

    • @bren.r

      Sound isn’t based on wattage. The things that matter are: brushless/non brushless, operating RPM, how well-insulated the internal components are from transferring the resonance to the exterior, wall thickness, bean density (lighter roasts will be louder)
      A high wattage, low RPM brushless grinder will be far quieter than say a cheap, thin plastic-walled low wattage grinder that markets a 1500 RPM motor as being a good thing to ignorant consumers.

    Another great video! I don't understand your grind settings section. You state that to go the smallest step finer you have to first move the macro adjustment one step coarser, then go two steps finer on the micro adjustment. Given that one micro step = 2/3 macro step, that gives you a total of +1 -2/3 -2/3 = -1/3 macro steps. But couldn't you achieve that more simply by just going one macro step finer, then one micro adjustment coarser? That's -1 +2/3 = -1/3 macro steps: the same result.

    I think the micro adjustment scale makes sense because once you changed the inner blue ring one tick finer, it moves the outer ring one tick coarser, but you have to switch it back to 5 because, now "5" is finer than before, and I think that will be enough for the target market for this grinder.

    • @LifestyleLab_

      @@LifestyleLab_ Someone made an app called "Beanie - Grind Size Finder" that helps dial in every possible incremental setting on the Opus . But if I'm understanding it correctly, by simply using the inner blue ring, that gives each outer setting a -6 and +6 level of adjustability. I think that will be enough for most people and the easiest way to think about it. BUT the confusion is there are actually -12 and +12 if you know how to set the two rings, and this app really helps dial those possibilities in.

    Fantastic review. Straight to the point without any fluff. I wish Fellow just made the Ode to be capable of grinding espresso. If they can make a cheaper grinder that has that capability, I don't see why it can't also be done in the Ode for not too much extra money. The DF64 proves you can make an affordable grinder with 64mm burrs that can grind espresso.

    • @OSUBoxkator
      @OSUBoxkator 10 месяцев назад

      Because the ode is a flat burr grinder. You can't just snap your fingers and make a grinder do both. There is a reason that there are not many grinders that do both. The ones that do don't compete from a quality perspective compared to the grinders focusing on either filter or espresso coffee.

    • @goldencalf5144
      @goldencalf5144 10 месяцев назад

      @@OSUBoxkator DF64??? Actually, there are a bunch of grinders that do both. My Baratza Vario is flat burr and grinds espresso. Most Mazzer grinders are flat burr and they are mostly used for espresso here in Australia . The Chinese are making a heap of cheap flat burr grinders that can grind espresso. There's nothing magical about flat burrs or conical burrs. They just produce a different particle size distribution depending on the burr geometry.

    • @OSUBoxkator

    • @goldencalf5144
      @goldencalf5144 10 месяцев назад

      @@OSUBoxkator Well that comes down to the burr set and the capability of the motor. With the Ode, you can swap out the burrs with SSP burrs that are capable of grinding espresso (and also provide a great filter brew). However, it seems the motor in the Ode is not powerful enough to grind espresso without risk of burning out.

    • @OSUBoxkator
      @OSUBoxkator 10 месяцев назад

      @@goldencalf5144 I was under the impression flat burrs created too much resistance which is why they can't do espresso range. Additionally, ode has flat burrs because they preferred the flavor profile for pour over. End of the day: you can't do both without an incredibly high price point or making a a decision that clearly favors espresso like going with conical burrs and probably stepless OR having an incredibly powerful motor which would also be expensive.

    I got an Opus a few days early as a subscriber to Fellow's newsletter. It worked fine but the power button was so sensitive, it would sometimes restart after I stopped it. Fellow is replacing it with a new unit.
    You're absolutely right about the grind adjustment. So odd and it only seems to help at the lower end for espresso. Once you dial it in for that, you're essentially just re-homing the finest setting to be finer or courser.. I doesn't change the spacing between clicks on the main wheel, it only seems to adjusts the finest setting down from 1 to .6 or .3.

    • @WMDistraction
      @WMDistraction Год назад

      I don’t own one yet, but it seems to me that you only ever want to use the micro adjustment for espresso and “zero” it for anything else, and dialing in espresso would mean making an educated guess to get within 5-10 seconds of expectation and moving the micro adjustment diner/coarser to compensate.
      Does the manual include recommended espresso settings for different roast levels or no?

    • @DrewCommins
      @DrewCommins Год назад

      @@WMDistraction That's correct about setting it for espresso but you don't need to change it for anything else. It's all a matter of how you like other brew methods on where you put the main dial.
      For me, I have the blue ring set to 4 ticks toward the minus side. That gives me the best grind for the espresso I like. For pour overs, I just set the main ring to 5 or 6 (like they suggest on the lid). If I find that to be too fine or too course, I just move the main ring a few clicks.
      The manual doesn't have any grind setting recommendations for roast types but it does have dosage ratios for brew methods.

    Are you sure the micro adjustments move the burrs? I can't tell by looking but it seems like they wouldn't. Because let's say you want the outer ring at 0. The minimum on outer ring is 1 so in order to get to 0 you set the outer ring to 1 and then you move the inner ring all the way finer. The outer ring will now show you at 2 but you're still really at what 1 was previously so the burrs havent moved yet. Moving it back to 1 now effectively gets you to 0.
    So i think for espresso you move outer ring to the point to where it's flowing a bit too fast. Let's say that number is 2. Then do 1 or 2 micro adjustments and then move outer ring back to 2. Similar to above where 1 was finer by 6 micro adjustments, effectively being 0. 2 in this case would be a bit finer than it was before by 1 or 2 micro adjustments.

    Clearly, an engineer is running the show at Fellow. I worked for an engineer for 22 years and dealt with engineers on almost a daily bases. They tend to make even the simplest things complicated as if they try too hard to make everything their own. If you let them, they'd even make getting lunch way too complicated on most days. It's quite apparent that whoever designed this ridiculous contraption to set a finer grind for espresso didn't bother with a consumer feedback panel before taking it to production.

    It's a cheap grinder that can grind in the espresso range. Lots of compromises have obviously been made to achieve that. I would never want one myself (i'm not the target audience tho) and i think i f i was on a limited budget i would rather pick a good hand grinder rather than something like this. It's a pretty nasty bit of kit that looks very frustrating to use but there are plenty of people wanting to get into espresso who don't have the funds to do it that will pick this up.

Trick is the micro burr adjustment inside the grinder has to be taken out reset at 1 then throw your espresso dial over to 65-67 and you are ready to pull a shot.

      Several areas the Opus is superior
      - Biggest one, burr design. Much better grind distribution, better tasting shots, less muddiness. SGP isn’t a great grinder from an overall taste perspective

      - Build quality of internal parts, the Opus is a tank

    The comments here are so lol. How often do you dial in espresso? The correct answer is once. You dial it in once. Then you keep your grind setting until you switch beans. If you are making your coffee 7 different ways with 4 different beans on the go, you are the problem, not the grind setting mechanism.

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  Год назад +1

      Not necessarily… subtle grind changes are often needed as the beans age, and even as the environment in your kitchen changes day to day…
      That being said, it isn’t even so much an issue of how often you use it, it’s an issue that when you DO use it, it takes a surprising amount of thought to just move one step up or one step down by the smallest amount. A task that is completely mindless on any other grinder.
