- Does this surprise you? Make you want the burrs? Do you appreciate my holding off on the review?
Also, please know this won't affect future burr reviews. I have no monetary gain from these selling and no pride. I still prefer SSP MP. This wasn't an attempt at MY ideal burr, but at AN ideal burr at the price point.

IMPORTANT TLDR:
I have no bias towards this grinder or these burrs. I prefer the timemore sculptor 078 to these. I prefer ssp MP to these. I prefer ZP6 to these. I prefer the new Pietro Pro Brewing to these.
I was simply wanting to help make an accessible burr set that was solid. Will they blow your mind? Probably not. Should you buy them? Maybe if you're using stock burrs and want a cheap upgrade.
Anyway, this is the first and last time you'll hear me discuss these burrs so there won't be any issue going forward.
Let's be real- I am not compensated so no incentive ha! Just happy to have contributed to something many seem to enjoy. Was excited to share that.
Let me know your thoughts below!
Oh, and like and subscribe!
Did you notice a lot of fines? I’m at the coarest setting and I’m still getting so much fines. 40 grams in and about 2 grams of 250um and smaller.
Michael Chong, that really isn’t a lot of fines. A pretty normal amount. You’ll always get some fines.
You probably could align your burrs to produce less fines though.
Thank you Lance! I think you helped everyone in Specialty coffee by raising the bar for the burrs that became the "Gen 2" burrs!
ZP6 vs Pietro Pro Brewing for a travel grinder?
That's next to nothing. Plus sifting is not a helpful measurement but let's assume it is. I sifted for my US brewers cup routine which placed second in my testing. A 15g dose of coffee on an ek43 gave me 2.2g of fines.
Travel? Zp6. Easier to hold and lighter. Better particle distribution? Pietro with the burrs I helped create lol. I am heavily biased here because I make royalties on Pietro sales BUT to be honest, it is big and heavy (1.5kg). Zp6 is lighter for travel. I prefer brews from Pietro and so have the 4 people I have blind brewed for.
Lance, Thank you so much for your clarity and transparancy with this video. It goes to show your character and respect for this industry and other creators. Huge props
I simply love that my two favorite coffee experts know each other and collaborate. Thank you Lance and James. Would love to see you two do a chat sometime. Our minds would be blown.
This is so awesome. Fellow is lucky to have you helping them and a shout out to Fellow wanting to make the best product for us coffee enthusiasts they possibly could.
This is awesome, congrats Lance & Nick! We're still waiting on the Ode 2 here but excited to try it.
Two quick things
1.) the hopper lid sits well when it’s made properly. The first one I got was warped so it never sat flat and always wobbled. Their EXCELLENT customer service replaced it and I’m happy with it now.
2.) adding your face to the stories I’ve heard about the process of selecting #23 makes so much sense.
Great collab with Nick, Lance. Nick is fantastic and definitely a humble guy. Love what Fellows does, and have really been enjoying the Gen 2's since they were made available to the kickstarter backers. Fantastic burr set!
definitely! He rocks. and glad you enjoy them!
@@LanceHedrick what about versus the wilfa uniform ?
This is really uplifting to see your passion and innovation lead to something great!
thank you so much! I'm humbled, to say the least, at the response.
Great video Lance, fascinating to hear insights into the design process for this grinder, and your role in the burr design. This review has honestly made me reconsider the Ode Gen 2 as a replacement for my multi-purpose Mini. Also - the quality of your videos just keeps improving, although I appreciate the way your natural personality still shines through, I need to ensure I'm not drinking coffee when I watch your videos, just in case I inadvertently spit it out over my keyboard when you make me laugh! 😁
I really liked this video. Different than a normal review but still hit the important parts. Good to know it has high praises from you and Daddy Hoff
Waiting for others to go first was a real stand up move. And stepping to improve a grinder at this price point is incredible stuff. It’s not raised the bar for everyone else.
First, thanks for all your shared sage knowledge. Watching your videos and the info that can't seem to bubble out fast enough, brings to mind the talking style of Marc Andreessen. (That's a huge compliment, he's almost otherworldly in his range and depth about everything.) My old Breville grinder died today and I binged reviews and videos. I only needed something simple for my French press, my espresso setup is in good health, so ordered this grinder today. Doesn't seem perfect but hope it will suffice without spending a larger chunk of change. Your stamp of approval made it a go. Thanks again.
Awesome video! Intro, choice of music, your acting style, so fun to watch!
Production keeps improving man. Love the cuts and edits. Great pacing. Great video!
Wow. I’m a sub 100 like hitter!
This was great Lance.
Had no idea you were involved with the Gen2 until Daddy Hoff eluded. Nice to hear it from the horses mouth.
Glad you de died to go about it the way you did. You are helping out the greater coffee community and remaining humble.
Keep on keeping on brother.
...and nice pour!
thank you! I'm really stoked and humbled they would listen, to be honest. Really cool move by Nick
I love my Gen 2. Thanks for all the work and input on the burrs!
fantastic! That is awesome to read.
Lance, Hugo, this video made me love you guys even more. Beautifully shot, and the content and history and behind the scenes was such an exciting watch.
thank you! Hugo is fantastic.
@@LanceHedrick SO ARE YOU!
Total credit to Lance. He makes it easy
I’ve been wanting to upgrade from my Encore after 5 years, as I’m strictly a pour over person at home, and after hearing your review, along with James’ and others, I’m going to be pulling the trigger on the Gen 2 soon.
Very open and honest video, Sir. BTW enjoyed your coaster set!
Your transparency is refreshing, thanks
thank you!
Glad you were involved cause the Gen 2 burrs are probably my favorite filter burrs right now for an all around. Nick is such an awesome dude, I’ve had the privilege of chatting with him many times. Coffee people are so awesome!!! 🤘☕️😝
heck yeah! I linked your video, as well. Goodjob!
@@LanceHedrick wow!!!! Thank you man 😊🙌☕️
absolutely!
Well goodsir, you and James Hoffman have officially convinced me to finally pull the trigger on a good grinder. Ty for a great video as always. 🙌🏼
For my 2 cents (worth likely less than that), I think these are exactly what they should be. My daily driver is a Lagom P100 with the stock SSP HU 98s; it was my preference overall for the kind of coffee I like to prepare, as blind tested against a friend's Weber and another friends Kafatek. Finding an electric brew grinder in that mid 300s price range that I could feel really good about recommending to friends and family who are not nearly as obsessed with coffee (i.e. not even entertaining the idea of dropping anything north of $400 on a grinder) was a lot harder before this came out. I got one right after they came out as a present for my brother in law, and had a chance to do a triangle test against my P100 for shiggles. Yes of course the P100 won every time. It was not night and day. The burrs in this really do produce an objectively enjoyable cup of coffee, and I think that's a real achievement at the price point.
TL;DR, nicely done.
Your dry but also silly humor while giving amazing information is my favorite thing about all of your videos.
this is amazing! Really awesome move!
Also I'm very pleased with my pretty new ode gen 2 grinder... I switched from the Encore and now that the burrs saw some action and I'm getting closer to my personal sweet point grindsizewise I'm really really happy I bought this! I'm so full of joy with most of my cups currently and i'm still improving with this grinder...
Also I wanna try the SSP MP burrs after I get some experience with the gen 2 burrs, they're already waiting to be installed... but currently I enjoy the coffee of the gen 2 burrs very much, so they'll have to wait a bit longer...
And now your video totally backed that with your experience, so thank you for that as well! :)
I posted my first comment before I finished the video, but thank you so much for waiting and for the transparency with your involvement on the bur development. I bought this grinder right when it came out because of other reviews, and knowing that you helped develop the burs just makes it feel even more special. I've really enjoyed this grinder, it's my first grinder and it's the one that got me into specialty coffee and I've been having a great time discovering light roast with it.
As for the price, I think too much is being made of it, honestly. I think $50 is more than fair for the upgrade, especially considering inflation in the USA has caused, on average, increased consumer prices by 16%. 16% on $299 is $348, so it's basically a free upgrade if you buy it now, compared with the 2020 price of the Ode gen1
that's fair! In my mind, it is a 20% increase. If you look at it like it, it seems quite a bit more for a scaling company that is probably thrice the size they were. The margin has to be nuts on these in comparison to gen 1. But I get it!
@@LanceHedrick well, I don't really know about how big the company was compared to now, I thought my grinder three months ago so the fellow I know now is the fellow I've always known lol. One thing is interesting, they have a mix of premium price products ($100 French press), and now very low price with the Opus, and I think of the Ode as in between the two. They definitely have a wide ranging portfolio, for sure!
The Gen. 2 price is justified due to the significant improvements from Gen1. You and other reviewers all agree that the improved burrs, low retention and static, more efficient hopper and SSP compatibility create a much improved taste in the cup and user experience.
As always, my friend your honesty and willingness to share rivals that of Jim Hoffmann. We unwashed rabble appreciate y’all.
thank you so much! What stellar company
First time viewer here. I was interested in learning about the Ode Gen 2, but the opening had me thinking that it was about the next Avenger movie. Later I found myself in the Upside Down. That said, I learned something and I think the Ode is the way to go. Thanks for an informative and entertaining review!
I picked up in ode gen 2 and I’ve been very happy with it. Great job on the vid.
fantastic! Glad to read it.
When I used my Gen 1, I would set the grind setting as low as 3 for the lighter roasts and still managing to get a 3 to 3.5 minute extraction in the Stag XF pour over set. I had to turn the grind setting all the way down to 1 if using the V60 in order to get a a great extraction. Now, with the Gen 2 with the upgraded SSP MP burrs I can get the same or similar extraction using the Stag XF but turned all the way up to the largest grind setting. This naturally opens up a huge array of possibilities for extractions with lighter roasts in the finer grind settings with the V60! I’ve been enjoying a ton of experimenting with different extractions, recipes and so on. The anti static feature is a game changer. This Gen 2 is very clean! Overall, I love the flexibility this new grinder is affording me!
Thanks for an awesome review!
A while ago I got two sets of gen1 burrs, and I tried two of the same burrs (the non interlocking side) and they tasted hollow. So I went back to standard Gen1. Then I bought Gen2 burrs. They are awesome.
heck yeah! glad you love them!
Having owned the Fellow for a while, it would be great to see you do a video of how you would change the grind and brew method for different roasts of coffee (light through dark) and how the given changes impact the finished brew (using the Fellow). Love your vids 👌 thanks for the great info.
Hahahaha dude the bit where you make the coffee and your reaction to the taste was freaking so good and HILARIOUS. Production game keeps going up, this was so sick. Incredible music track, and very good editing for when the music comes in at what times and how intense… this is so good.
Lance.. your generous praise for others is an admirable quality. It makes anything you say ring with veracity.. or something like that.🤐
thank you! I'm just stoked to be a little part of this awesome community.
Thank you for revealing one of your secrets Lance 😂 I’m so glad you called out the lid seating issue. My fingers are stiff due to arthritis so I knock stuff over all the time (put away the good wine glasses). I had to stop using my Moccamaster because I would knock over the filter basket all the time. I just unboxed the Breville Precision Brewer and need to upgrade my brew grinder (Breville Smart Grinder Pro) and the Ode 2 would be a contender if they made a lid that snaps or seats in well.
New to your channel, this was amusing to watch and I'm now a subscriber. Not the first of your videos I've watched.
Excellent video and even better shirt!! Nice 👊🏼
One of your best videos ever bro
Lance this is unrelated to the actual video content but wanted to say that you were BORN to have a killer mustache. Looks amazing
oh my god. there are good comments and then there are GOOD COMMENTS! THIS is the latter!
Hi Lance, great video as always! Did you try to grind for espresso with these burrs? Perhaps on different grinder
yes! They can. But you are going to grind insanely finely, like near or past touch point. Shouldn't hurt the burrs, but doable!
Nice Lance x Fellow collab. Keep up the great work.
Got the Gen 2 last week. It's actually my first electric grinder. Before now I hand ground everything with a 1zpresso K-Plus. Which is great. However, I do a lot of cold brew for my lady and I throughout the week. An batch brewing on a hand grinder sucks.
But so far it's been great. It's interesting to task the difference between a conical burr and a flat burr grinder. It's more of a generic coffee tast I suppose. But it's still a great cup. Just... different in it's own way. Loving it.
heck yeah! love to read about people experimenting, etc. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Hey Lance, thanks for the video! Great as always!
I just wanted to ask a quick question: Do you have any content (or other resources) to dig into different burr geometries? I (and I presume many others) don't have the financial means to buy all the different SSPs, Lab Sweets, let alone in different sizes whatsoever, so I can't compare them on my own. However, I would love to know what a "feed rate" is and how it affects taste, what differences exist between, say, pentagonal and heptagonal there are (except the number of teeth, obviously). I hope this question makes sense?:D
Muito obrigado mais uma vez! Cheers, Lukas
Hey, just to let you know. your "um, dois, três" was intense, greatly pronounced and perfectly timed.
Portugal has been doing you some good!
Killer video as always. You say it is the option at this price point? The Wilma uniform is now stateside. Curious if that unit included in this statement? Thanks for all the great content Lance!
Wow the burr bit what a legend Nick is
Hey Lance, great video. Whatever it’s worth: I upgraded from the gen1 ode to gen2 and at first the anti static tech was great. It helped a ton, the grind was really fluffy and …not charged with static. But after about 6-8 months of daily use (and no cleaning just using the knocker), the grounds are pretty staticky and messy again. I tore it all down and cleaned it out, and it worked pretty well (like new) again for a few weeks but now it’s back to getting clogged up again. The wires that are energized get absolutely caked with grinds and I guess needs to be cleaned regularly. Now as I type it out it seems so obvious lol.
How much work and how long does it take to do the cleaning? Is that normal maintenance or are you disassembling the whole grinder?
@@tristanwwsd just brushing the grinds off of the wires and exit chute area is all.
@@jonathonhagerty237 Okay. That's not a big deal since it's exterior. Thanks
Are you misting your beans with water? That helps dramatically.
thank you so much for this review and I hope you have a great day
Awesome video & candid info. But i need to ask a clarification for myself: Would u say the Ode 1 would now grind fine enough for Light Roasts? Or is the Ode 2 necessary for various types of lighter roasts? (iIm mainly asking about finer grinding possibilities without any consideration for other differences or improvements Between Ode 1 & 2. Thank u!
Thanks for the review and the honesty about your involvement. It might have been preferable to not hold back and have us find out about it from other sources first.
glad to read this! I think I made the right choice (though I don't think i'm biased since I make zero money from it ha! their success or failure literally nothing to me, but I wanted to err on the safe side)
I agree with you and Hoff-daddy on the price...if the Opus has a stronger motor and can grind finer, while being cheaper than the Ode, what could they do to bring those elements to the Ode and keep the price flat? What's really driving the up?
As an engineer, props for the anti-static solution. I've seen that used in my line of work, on equipment worth millions, to ensure tiny plastic parts feed without sticking.
The crossroad of art and science...
Makes a great story. Thanks
Looking for an Encore upgrade, I think this video sealed it for me haha thanks Lance!
That intro though! 🔥
Lol, i WAITED for the gen 2 burrs, bought them… hated em. Was let down. Went with SSP MP… those are it, only burrs i may ever want or need. Thank you for coming to my tedtalk.
You hated them? Very odd. How much time did you spend with them? Did you align? What do you go for in a cup? Did you do any blind tastings with multiple cups? Confirmation bias can be a bitch. I love the SSP MP as well, and agree they're better, but it sounds like you're saying you're a much better taster than daddy Hoff, who said these two burr sets were nearly indistinguishable.
I have 3 weeks with my ODE gen 2 and it’s quality in terms of built quality and grind uniformity it’s just amazing
I'm about the same time in so far, and just haven't been able to get brews without an overwhelming syrupy thick body, have those not been your results? Is that the type of texture you like?
I'm blown away by all your videos, it has really opened my eyes. I'm learning more everyday. I have a good laugh too. I wanted to know what you think is the best option for a single dose grinder for espresso, under 500ish. If that's even possible. I'm eagerly waiting on the KS Timemore release this month of the 64S. Do you think this is worth the wait? All the best mate! Cheers.
I say wait for the timemore. it seems promising!
@@LanceHedrick i'm in the same boat as Luke. Really hoping you got the 64s to compare it to the ode 2. But what I realllly want to see is how the variable rpms can affect the grind.
Very much enjoyed it, very entertaining. Loved the suspense! I am happy though I am not that into filter coffee, or I would have been too tempted to buy those burrs :p
Lance, I’m curious how you would rate the new KM5 compared to the Ode2. I have a Moccamaster brewer. I really appreciate your reviews. Thanks
Just received my eu version today, so happy with it!
heck yeah! Stoked you are enjoying it
Based on the intro music, I thought Lance was going to confess to using the Gen 2 to open a portal to the Upside Down.
Been using the Gen 2 burrs in my Gen 1. Can't agree more with both the cup and Fellow's commitment to putting out a quality product.
hahaha! Incredible. I am dustin from the future.
I remember you mentioning you intended to touch on (no pun intended) burr alignment with the new carrier in this video, but I didn't catch anything about it? I was unable to get any kind of burr chirp when I tried to align her, and just ended up putting it all back together. I didn't want to bug you about it when the video first dropped since you pump out such bomb content so often😊
Hi Lance, just wondering if you will be able to get a review out on the Timemore sculptor 064 vs 078? Want to know is there is any difference in taste before buying. Thanks!
Got myself the Ode Gen1 "hackers edition" that comes with the Gen2 burrs (because in Germany the Ode Gen2 grinder is/was stupidly overpriced) and from day1 , this cute litle grinder has a place in my heart.
With RDT static isn't too much of an issue and the hopper is... ok. Might switch it out for a Gen2 hopper once the parts hit the european market.
The burrs itself are working nicely and fit my personal flavor profile, which is slightly more body and complexity over clarity.
Your story on how you got involved in development of the gen2 burrs makes me love them even more.
hey Lance... excellent videos all over your channel...have you tried the ode gen2 burrs on a df64 II for espresso? what are your thoughts on that combination?
thanks
Thx lance I'm very enjoy with ZP6 special 🙏🏻
very cool! ... if put in another espresso-capable grinder (say DF64 or other) ...are the Gen2 burrs capable of grinding fine enough for espresso? thanks!
Hi Lance !! Nice video i have a question for you. Why nobody talk "review" about Ceado grinders are they bad ,overprice, not good as similars price tag or something ? I just try to find the best single dose allround grinder for me and they seem to be pretty good. Or the eg1 is the best?
Thanks Lance.
heck yeah!!!
@@LanceHedrick 👊🏻
Would these be good burrs for pourover and espresso in variable-RPM grinders like the P64 and the upcoming (and much cheaper) Turin VS64? I have my eyes set on the latter and am wondering whether I should get it with the stock burrs or already invest in this $80 upgrade.
Thank you Lance, I have 2 small question and only you trust you to answer.
1. As just about all my coffee drank as filter is med-dark to dark, will I be making a mistake getting the SSP MP for this grinder?
2. I am willing to spend upto 1200, if there is anything else you suggest for filter focus I would appreciate it, size is irrelevant, and again thank you for what you do, we are very lucky for your hard work and travels. 🤗🤗🤗
Cant wait for the European version to get released. will be the perfect grinder for larger pour over and FP brews that the hand grinder would not handle without being tedious
❤ Nice one Lance.
thank you!
Please do make a video on 'reading' the burr sets - both flat, and connical. What you can assume and/or ready by just looking at the burrs. Nobody has touched it, I know nothing about it, and I'd love to know
once I can know concretely that certain burr design choices correlate exactly to certain things in the cup, I will. Right now, most is voodoo!
Hey Lance, great video (as always!). Quick question: do you think the Ode 2 would be a good upgrade from a Comandante C40? Or should I spend my money on beans instead? 😅
Dude, nothing is a good upgrade from a comandante. It's the benchmark. But I understand your wish for faster, effordless grinding tho :D
How annoying do you find hand grinding? I like my jx pro for espresso and travel but it got quite annoying in the morning when I just want my coffee. So I picked up an electric grinder. I have the urbanic 070s not the ode cuz I wanted an espresso capable grinder, but that was my big motivation for the investment
loads of grinders better than comandante. outdated benchmark, imo. floating burr, interior adjustments, and a wide particle distribution (I have taken lots of tests on a mastersizer 3000 and it fails against lots of the 1zpresso lineup, for example). it's a fine handgrinder, but super overpriced for the build and results, imo.
@@LanceHedrick could you do a comparison of PSDs of 1zpressos like zp6 & k series & ode gen2 & ssp mp and blind cupping? 😃
@@MrAndrej0 I've done the blind cupping. I have laser data of 1zpresso and c40 and kinu and mazzer omega. James posted laser of these and mp
Well done to Nick on these burrs! And well done lance on making a good call!
I’ve been praising these burrs for their versatility since they first came out! They really produce an excellent cup, that I think anyone would enjoy!
fantastic! Thanks so much. Nick did a stellar job.
Loved the video, and the work Nick and the team at fellow have done with the Gen 2. It really is a nice object to have on my counter. I'm going to give it more time and experiment with another coffee or two, but the feeling I'm getting is that I must have got a lemon, because I have only got maybe one decent cup in the first week of ownership. I need some comparisons with other grinders, but so far I'm shocked that my Encore with default burs is producing better results in the cup. Everything I'm getting is muddy, choking the V60 easily, and I haven't found a position on the dial yet that's let me avoid significant unpleasant dryness. If it's possible to get a good cup with this particular unit, it's at the very least quite difficult, and for $500 CAD, I'm hoping for cups that don't make me want to rinse my mouth out afterward, even at weaker ratios and coarser grind settings. It's quite surprising, but I'm hoping to eventually get some decent results with it, because it is a really nice design, with a few minor problems like the somewhat irritating catch cup. It grinds so fast, it's quiet, it's clean, it feels nice to use.
Have you seasoned? Checked alignment? Hoffmann just showed in his video how tight the uniformity is on these burrs. Hopefully not a lemon!
Maybe you can get a hold of some of the fellow drop coffees which fellow releases specific grind settings and recipes and use those as benchmarks?
Try realigninging the Gen2 burrs. Nick at fellow has a great tutorial on realigning your burrs
@@LanceHedrick I have since checked alignment, thanks to your video and others that demonstrate the market test and shimming. It was useful, and now I'm getting some of that acidity and flavour expression I'd expect out of some of my lighter roasted beans, but I'm still not realistically able to grind within the 4-5 range without the resulting brew just being dominated by body. I usually think 'There are some of those flavours I got when I tried the same coffee ground on a Sette at 600 microns, but only if it wasn't nearly as dense and syrupy". So in that sense, it's really hard to tell what's just a matter of my perception regarding these burrs when they're performing ideally. You and others who've reviewed it, along with their own description, emphasize body, but no so much so that I couldn't get an easy to drink cup, but I'm getting rather tough-to-like cups. A V60 for example is closer to Moka pot or maybe a french press in terms of oilyness or siltyness, almost like I'm going in for a bite rather than a sip. For a 4-6 cups a day, these results are just tricky to get down
Since day one our new Ode Gen 2 has been prone to jamming. We only use it once per day, sometimes less, but have already experienced at least 7 lockups in 30 days when grinding medium to dark roast beans at a setting of 7-8 for French Press. I am now reading similar reports from Ode 2 owners. What is going on and is there a fix? For $350 one should not have to be concerned about such an unreliably functioning product. Note: when putting the same beans into a Lagom Mini set for espresso with a Flair 58+, I haven't had a single lockup. Time to return it while I can and choose something more reliable? Any advice appreciated.
It’s unfortunate that Timemore doesn’t seem to be planning on making a 110v version of the 078 for the US market. Looking forward to your thoughts about the 064 to decide whether I’m getting the Timemore or the Ode Gen 2.
Dude you and fellow did a fantastic job at making the burrs. I still swapped for some cast burrs, but even still it was massive diminishing returns. I feel like for 99% of the people in the coffee hobby the gen 2 burrs will be plenty. You guys mastered the peak before diminishing returns and value for money. I honestly almost regret spending the 200 for the cast burrs lol
thank you! I was hoping that was the outcome- peak before diminishing returns.
I want that hopper more than anything. I upgraded the burrs in my gen 1. I’m just annoyed having to fiddle with coffee beans to go down the chute!
It’s also too bad the ionizer isn’t backwards compatible to the gen 1. I would love to just upgrade my gen 1 to be close to this level.
☕Great review! Been enjoying my Gen2 for a few months! Generally, how are your brewing? Grind size range (I see ~3 in this video at the end), V60-01, Lotus water recipe?
Hopefully lance will answer, but I think its really helpful that Fellow has videos on their youtube showing recipes for various coffees including grind settings for gen 2 burrs and SSP burrs
heck yeah! And I brew all over. Depends on touch point calibration.
I think you timed this video perfectly. Than you
great! I appreciate that.
Awesome❤ curious how the Ode G2 compare to SSP Cast V2… currently running the MP and Cast in two grinders, usually for espresso and filter respectively, but also switch it up if I’m feeling it haha
I think similar but this has more body.
double coffee peep videos today is amazing.
em is awesome!
have you ever had a washed coffee from papua new guinea? my local roaster does one from Kunjin Western Highlands, Waghi Valley is what they have right now. I have never smelled or tasted anything like this in my life. I have a fairly solid cooking in fancy restaurant past including a fancy place in montreal so tasting something that I have never tasted before kind of blew my mind. I still honestly don't know how to describe the tastes I taste from it, even the smell of the beans is just something I can barely describe.
I have not been a fan of any coffees from PNG but always looking to be surprised!
@@LanceHedrick I think it's a Mundo nuvo but I'm not sure
Thanks so much Lance! Have you happened to pull turbo espresso shots with the gen 2 burrs, would you consider this a possibility, even if not fully advised with the ode's motor
Can definitely do turbos
@@LanceHedrick Thanks, keep crushing it!
Well done Lance
Wow, just noticed that grind setting with your light roasted Kenya. Lots of leeway left.
yeah! totally.
This is looking super appealing now! I got the DF83 a few weeks ago and have a Niche and Specialita to sell (at least one of them). May just have to be replaced with the ode gen 2 for an amazing espresso plus filter setup 🤤
Keep your eyes peeled for that timemore sculptor drop. Tbh I recommend the 078 (not S version) over this all day for filter. Seems KS price will ve like 399
@@LanceHedrick there no ks version of 078 ( without s) and 078s will be 499
Thanks for your videos. I like them.
thank you! Means a lot ;)
I have one of the earlier Baratza Vario grinders (steel burrs). Do you think the Ode 2 is better for filter and Aeropress coffee than the Vario?
Fascinating and brilliantly presented.
thank you so much for the support and kind words!
Will there be a gen 3 that can do espresso?
I didn’t really consider the Gen 2 burrs as I was planning on getting the SSPs by default. I am now reconsidering these burrs knowing that you had such a big role in their development.
On the other hand, I think I want to maximize clarity, so I may get the SSP’s anyway
yes. SSP MP will maximize clarity. No question!
@@LanceHedrick I have enough Fellow Giftcards to get the Ode Gen 2 right now, but I need to cover the SSP MP upgrade out of pocket which is an ongoing negotiation with my SO.
I am not sure when or if I will get SO approval for another upgraded grinder beyond the Ode Gen 2 in the future, so long term considerations are very important. It would probably be very difficult to get the Ode Gen 2 with Gen 2 Burrs and then convince my SO to let me spend another ~ $185 + tax on a burr upgrade at a later date. In the long run, I think I am probably safer with the SSP MP burr upgrade from the get go. So I will delay my Ode Gen 2 purchase until I can get approval for the SSP MP upgrade with the initial purchase.
Daddy Hoff alluding to other inexpensive grinders on the horizon that will rival or exceed the Ode Gen 2 does not make this easier, but i guess with my giftcards, I am already committed to the Ode Gen 2
Nice video, the production quality and style is coming along. Still too many weird side shots in the beginning.
Great video. Do you prefer the cups from the Ode gen2 or the ZP6? I bought the ZP6 on your recommendation but i am I tempted to buy this grinder.
I prefer zp6
Thank you for the quick reply. Do you still start around 5 for your 1 cup v60’s? Ive only had mine a short while and trying to get the best out of it. Thanks
Yeah! I do.
👍 thank you for replying to my questions.
absolutely!
Did you test these burrs in a different grider like a DF64 for espresso?
I know that this are primarily filter burrs but the lower price makes them very desirable for those who don't want to spend a fortune on SSPs.
can do espresso! Yes. But you are going to be grinding at touch point or tighter for light coffees.
hi there,
how dos default ODE 2 burr perform for the Aeropress?
you said it's a "filter" focused grinder.
I swap between v60 and aeropress and am frustrated by the click-guesswork on commandant when changing the grind size back and forth. This looks like a nice way to solve the issue :)
Thanks in advance
hey lance! is this grinder better than the zp6? im on the market to get a new better grinder for filter coffee than the delonghi that i have, but i just can't seem to get a zp6 due to its limited availability.
would this be a good route to take? is it better or different than the zp6? im just on the market for a better grinder
I recently received my Gen 2 a week ago to replace my old reliable OXO Burr grinder as I wanted something that made single dosing easier as I had many varieties of coffee to choose from and while my JX Pro was easy to swap beans on it was limited by capacity. What I do enjoy about it is that is easy to dial in my coffee and it is so much more quiet than the OXO. My only dislike is the hump in the center of the cup; the guides are easy for me to ignore by using the other side of the cup. Lids on either the grinder or the cup really don't phase me. Could they be a bit tighter, sure, but in the end it is the grind I am concerned about
Now as for that coffee at the end of your video, I have never hit a two on my pour over. I have a few light road decafs but they seem to not drain through the filter at that grind (v60)
it depends on how your grinder is calibrated! Likely mine is not the same as I have changed loads of burrs loads of times, and this affects touch point.
