As someone who upgraded their burrs on the original Encore, I can't tell you how happy it makes me that you don't have to take the whole machine apart to take the cone burr out anymore.
Right?! such a massively helpful part. That, the burr set, and the dialing. Massive.
How often did you take out the cone burr?
@@ucshyguy88 even once is a pain in the ass from the factory. everything is impossibly tight and I broke mult parts doing something that they made sound super easy. I gave up and sent it in to them to repair.
I'm super excited about these new, budget options! For the normal everyday coffee drinker, It's easier to swallow $200 for a good grinder to make better coffee than $700 or more!
I agree wholeheartedly! Such a good time to get into coffee
So many new grinders out now even for Espresso just lovely. 1-2 years ago there was basically just the smart grinder pro.
@@LanceHedrick What would you put this at vs the Turin SD40?!?!? I just bought both because I can't decide...
I was on the fence with the new Fellow Opus but this seems a better buy
@@texarkana3781 Works perfectly once dialed in correctly. Very tedious, but wonderful after all dialed in!
Thanks Lance! This is a super exciting release from Baratza. Finally, an entry-level multipurpose electric grinder worth owning!
Equal parts entertaining and informative as ever Lance. Brilliant video, great to see you finding your stride with your videos now, as well as getting the sort of wide audience you deserve. (Also, I appreciate the misophonia warnings!)
Yo Lance. I remember competing against you at our Latte art comp when you visited our little shop in Columbus, Indiana. I’ve been seriously enjoying your videos more and more, and watching you has been inspiring for my little barista self to learn more and more. Also, seriously love the more budget friendly options coming out! 👏🏻
Your beatbox skills are impressive as always! Had me rolling at work 🤣
Incredible content, as always. Thank you for all that you do!
haha! thank you- for watching me at work lol!
Yo can't wait for more beatboxing this was doooope /does the b-boy props hand wave
As a starter in the specialty coffee world who bought a 1zpresso x Pro I'm still super happy with it but also love these kind of reviews/comparison videos. Keep them coming!
Started my coffee journey around 2 years ago, wanted to upgrade some stuff but the prices are crazy so I am really excited for this year, bringing all the budget things that are capable of doing great coffee. Awesome review and explanations.
Agreed! Much needed shift of focus onto more accessibly priced gear!
FR enjoyed the beatboxing 🙌
Watched a bunch of your videos. Getting started with espresso. Enjoying the content. Thanks for everything
Chris Baca did a repair video on the OG Encore a couple of years ago, and IIRC he heard from Baratza that they made that burr holder in plastic so it breaks easily when a stone gets in there, in order to save the burrs. Makes sense, as almost every spare part of Baratza is available for home-repair, that's a big part of their company policy as you also pointed out in the video.
My OG encore had a sudden drop in grind quality. Looked up some videos and while I had it apart to fix it I was able to upgrade my burr to the new one. Pretty awesome how supportive they are and how they make it possible to only fix but to upgrade their machines.
Lance, I have to say that I was always super impressed with your knowledge but now, with the new set-up in Portugal, I'm crazy about every one of your films. Production is top notch, it looks great, sounds great and most of all, you seem to be very happy with what you're doing and it makes it even better for me as a fan. Keep it up!
Thank you, Kuba! It's been an absolute dream to move out here and my cameraman is now a good friend. It's delightful
@@LanceHedrick Welcome to Portugal? Greetings from Lisboa, Really interesting contents
Thank you lance. This is the video I’ve been waiting for 🎉
Glad I saw video explanation on Opus settings first because this is the genius improvement that BaratzaESP has going for it. Brava.
It is a fantastic and welcomed addition
Great content with even better delivery! Incredible talent!
This is the first video of yours that I've watched since you've moved to Europe and I have to say that the visual quality of your videos and editing skyrocketed 🔥🔥🔥
Chicky-chicky boom boom
baratza coming BACK
"Why not Chitty chitty bang bang, we love you! "
Boom shacka-lacka
@Lance Hedrick which would you recommend? The baratza esp or J max hand grinder? New to the world of espresso but want the best quality between the two. Or what would be your top recommended espresso for under 250
And Off I am too another late listen to an unknown Van Morrison song.
Chick a Boom
It really exists. Bang Sessions
Lance also has the looks like he's straight from this singer songwriter era. Dave Crosby, yep, except for the cool two tone jacket
Thanks for bringing attention to this price point, we need more of these. I did buy a J-max a year ago and am happy with it, but I am curious to hear how you would compare the 1zpresso vs the Encore ESP for espresso? Thanks
I really appreciate your level of information… just subscribed ❤
The adjustment ring is a really great design. Not to mention the baratza customer service. Have repaired a number of broken baratza after years of good service.
That fabric O ring is similar to the Breville built in grinders! Thank you Lance for taking a deep dive into your reviews! I'm a huge fan of consuming detailed videos before purchasing any coffee gear! It's greatly appreciated! 🙏
Oh yes! To absorb vibrations. I should've recognized it... thanks for watching!
To me a lot of this grinder's internals reminds me of my breville barista pro grinder, do you happen to have a breville grinder to compare it to?
I got my first grinder last year- a second-hand Baratza Virtuoso Plus, it feels like the original "Encore but better" based on my experience of the V+ and what people say about the Encore and Encore ESP. I didn't realise just how similar the Encore ESP was to the V+ though, the internals are instantly recognisable, even down to the red tab to help you seat the collar burr. I've loved the filter coffee out of the V+ and I'm really getting the hang of espresso with it now and the shots are coming out better and better all the time. It makes me want to stay in Baratza's ecosystem moving forward. Thinking of getting a Vario+ at some point in the future, when I have the budget for it.
Appreciate the timestamp for the purge button beatboxing so it’s easy to find when I come back later to rewatch
Thank you so much for doing these reviews! Just recently got an espresso machine after only filter coffee for years and I've been having a hard time finding an electric grinder that does both reasonably well. Between this and the Fellow, it feels like the Baratza is a better choice as I explore espresso more. Super excited for when I can purchase this and no longer have to hand grind. Great review (and great beatboxing) as always!
thank you so much! And exciting times! Hope you enjoy whichever choice you make!
Just found your channel after having a Baratza Vir+ 5hit the bed on me. Purchased a manual espresso machine and watching your content for a solid grinder.
New fan.
I have a Baratza Preciso and Sette 270Wi and I love them! I also have had amazing customer support from them. Very excited about this new one! Thanks for this review!
their support rocks.
In USA maybe. In the EU I am having trouble find a freaking burr ring for a year now ($8 in the US) and I can't buy it unless I pay through the nose for shipping ($120 CAD in one instance). My next burr will definitely not be a Baratza. Their support outside of USA sucks big time.
oh dang! Well I know they are opening more in Europe over this year so should improve i'd imagine!
Man, you’re bringing it. Thank you.
thank you!!! just a bit of singing in this one lol
@@LanceHedrick LMAO…no worries. Quick insight please? What’s the difference between this and the original encore upgraded with the M2 burr and calibrated to grind finer (that you can do by taking the cover off and changing a screw position on the burr collar). Also, there are a few really good single-dose bellows out there for the Encore. Thanks.
Agreed that the adjustment/thread system is really cool!!
for sure! Really great job by the design/engineer team
Awesome in depth review. I always liked the plastic around the burrs because the tabs would break if a rock or hard object went into your grinder. It was an easy part to replace and cheap.
Thats a good point! Kind of an easy fail safe mechanism
Yep I’ve had this happen, super easy replacement and back in business.
I’m looking at either the Encore or the Turin SD40… does the Turin make a better Espresso shot in your opinion?
I love and am highly excited for the entry level category as it opens the world to potentially more people to appreciate the world of coffee for a higher price to performance ratio than ever before.
I agree! Truly exciting times to be a coffee hobbyist
Would you recommend this for someone doing 50/50 espresso/drip? Or would I be better going up to $400 for the Varia VS3, DF64, Sette 270 or some Eureka?
I was dancing and laughing to this video.
Pure awesomeness Lance! 😂
good! That is awesome to read. Thanks for taking the time to drop the comment!
Thank you so much, Lance, I was waiting for your review because I was looking to buy this or the Opus. I didn't like Opus and his adjustment system, and the adjustment system on the Encore is just clever! I know I will enjoy great cups on my Flair Pro 2 with the Encore :)
lance mf’ing hendrick! you are an absolute JOY to watch. i haven’t watched in a while, but youtube knows i’m cheap and pushed these videos to me. thank you for everything you do!
I have introduced my partner to home espresso; the Encore ESP was already my likely choice to suggest, as she has and trusts an Encore, but this has sealed it for me. Cheers!
This might be the one! Thanks Lance
Thank you Lance for many videos with lot of infomation.
I have question and need your advuce.
My Breville expresso machine losts presure when i changed from double wall to regular bottomless basket. Please advise how fix?
Do i have to buy new machine?
As someone who just got an espresso machine a week ago, these new releases of grinders are boggling my mind😂
right !? i'm so excited for the coffee world.
I'm wondering if you would recommend getting the Encore ESP for my situation: I have a Virtuoso from 2016 which I used primarily for pour overs until about a year ago when I picked up a pre-millennium La Pavoni Professional. Now im probably 50/50 pour over/espressos and really enjoy the nerdiness of the lever espresso machine. Ive been making due with the coarse steps on the virtuoso and can make really enjoyable espressos but am interested in something I can fine tune more. Im really interested in the Niche, but havent pulled the trigger due to price point. Based on this review I would look at the Encore ESP over the Opus, but am wondering if it would be a substantial enough step up from my virtuoso? Or should I hold out until I can bite the bullet on the Niche? Any other grinders you think I should look at between the ESP and the Niche?
I just watched your Fellow Opus vid and was almost convinced that was what I was going to buy until I saw this Baratza review and I've completely u-turned due to my espresso needs and how neat that dial is. Such great content, thanks Lance.
Thank you so much for the Misophonia check 😭 It's such a little thing, but to me it means a lot, mouth noises like that just shut me down lol, thank you again ❤️
I currently have a modified encore with the m2 burr and adjusted calibration used for espresso only. Will I notice any significant quality improvement if I moved to a 1zespresso j max? Thanks!
Looks awesome!!!😍😍😍
Great video,
Would a gaggiuino pair well with the Encore ESP? Or would you spend more on the grinder?
I have 1Zpresso Jx-pro but want to switch to an electric grinder to reduce manual work. Is encore esp better than jx-pro for espresso? Or is sk40 or sette 30 better?
Just for how easy it is to adjust the dial / grind size on the Baratza, it wins my heart over every single grinders on this earth. Props to Baratza for such a good design. My Eureka Mignon's dial is driving me bonkers. Awesome vid as usual Lance 👌
The smaller hopper is great because you can use it as a baffle to get old coffee out.
If I'd modded my old encore and put in the vario burr is it still an upgrade?
Does not having as much granularity after the espresso settings eventually become a drawback when dialing in filter brews? I just found out about this after deciding to get the 1zpresso J-Max to supplement my Encore (adjusted the calibration screw but haven't upgraded burrs). I'm trying to decide now if it's worth just getting a flat burr grinder instead for something noticeably different if I'm going to move on from the Encore
Brilliant video as usual! Thank you. I am wondering if the new Encore could grind fine enough even if you do a lever like, preinfused shot with a dimmer modded Classic for example.
Very good video! Thank you!
“Oouu that spoon is hot 😉” LOL I don’t know why that cracked me up. Love the video. Thank you Lance
I'm wayching these vids to learn n up my coffee game.
But the unexpected comedy show is a hell'ava bonus..
Educational entertainment.
Your a niche dude!
This new Baratza Encore or Sette 30? Which one would you choose mostly for espresso?
@Lance Hedrick great video, I’m learning a lot about coffee and being entertained at the same time. My question right now is, what would you recommend for someone getting into espresso, an entry level machine like the infuser and an encore grinder or something like the Barista Express?
A question from a coffee novice: I have an inexpensive espresso machine and for 10 years have had a Dualit Burr grinder, having been told I needed a Burr grinder. I do not have a refined coffee palate but I prefer espresso to other types. I have the grinder permanently set on the finest grind. If I bought a Baratza Encore ESP, would I notice the flavor differences offered by the different espresso grinds?
Hello!! What would you say between the Encore and the Opus would be a better upgrade from that of the Breville Smart Grinder Pro Coffee Grinder? Would it be better for me to look at other options for an official “upgrade”? Thank you in advance!
I've been waiting for this one
I hope it doesn't disappoint!!!
How is this for dark roast, potentially with oils, to use with an AeroPress for taste quality as well as for clogging the grinder? Won't use it for espresso. Same question for the Ode Opus. Or is there a different electric option that will handle dark roast for filter/immersion brewing?
Hi Lance, would this grind fine enough for a single shot? I have an SGP and I can only go as low as 11g if I aim for 25s. I’d like to get down to 8g if possible
7:39 For someone with a manual grinder looking to buy an electric one, how does RPM affect flavour? I have an 1zpresso K-Max and I’m wondering if this would be a worthwhile purchase.
Is it safe to say the encore esp would noticeably improve my drip and pore over coffee compared with a simple blade grinder?
Great video, Lance! Would love to see that alicorn hyperalignment video you promised way back when for the Vario ;)
Question Please? I am a newbie to espresso! I have a Breville Pro. The grinder sucks. I am looking to purchase a stand alone grinder. The Pro pf is 54mm. I noticed many of the stand alone grinder pf’s
cups are 58mm. Do I need to to find a grinder that is compatible for 54mm or can I use my dosing cup? Thank you!!
I love my esp. But I've recently had issues with .5-.8 grams of retention per single dose. This is a new issue that wasn't happening before. I've cleaned the grinder and I sprayed my beans lightly to prevent retention. Any thoughts on the issue here?
Lance, how would you say these two compare to the SD40 for espresso?
Great review, thanks Lance! I know it's almost 2x the price, but how does the Encore ESP compare to a Lagom Mini, in particular regarding taste?
How does it compare to the Vario W Plus. .Is the Vario still a better machine ..or do they compare equally.
I have the Vario W Plus but was wonder about another grinder for workshop
Watched their stream on Prima yesterday. That grind adjustment mechanism seemed really interesting to me, so I’m glad to see it broken down. Was between this and the new Fellow, but this one looks like it’s the better investment.
I personally would take the longevity of baratza support and this dialing system.
@@LanceHedrick Forgive me if I missed it in the video, but how would you put this against the SD40? I’m currently using the SD40 for espresso and the original Encore for filter, but I’d love to get down to one machine. Is this a good replacement for those two?
I think it can hold its weight against sd40. I think you might lose a little bit with it, but that's arguable! negligible. I'd recommend selling the two and downsizing, if that is what you'd want to do
Yes, fellow is sus
I have a used Sette 270. Would you recommend staying with that or switching to one of these new ESP models?
How would you compare this to the built in grinder on a Barista Express? Worth the upgrade?
Pre-ordered an Encore ESP about two months ago while it was out of stock and it’s just shipped today. Very excited to spare my carpal tunnel riddled wrists from hand grinding!
I'm confused about the hopper on the white one. Does the ESP come with two different grounds cups and two different hoppers?
How would you compare this to something like a Mignon Crono at this similar price range? Specifically if switching between espresso and chemex?
How does this compare to the Sette? Is it the same burr set? Is it as good as the Vario for espresso?
For a moka pot which would be the appropriate range for grinding? Coarse side of espresso?
You are so musically talented on top of everything!
I modified my Encore with the M2 burr and the Preciso adjustment ring. Ignoring the plastic and the lack of a timer switch, it’s fungible with the Preciso. I haven’t used the new Encore ESP, but I feel like making the official version of my modded Encore would have been better for home espresso. This looks like the “double pin” mod people have been doing for a while. The stepless Preciso slider never left me wanting for more adjustment.
That said, all the creature comforts they added look great.
I also modified my Encore with the M2 burr and Preciso adjustment ring
This is why I adore your reviews. You're thorough to the tee. Keep it up. BTW, do you think the new threading system might deteriorate over time and hamper grind dial's movement?
I do not think so. It is built just like any other threading system. I think it should last just fine
So glad to see Baratza reimagine an icon!
it's about time! And they did an awesome job!
Thank you for bringing out the nuances between these two grinders. I’ve been wanting to upgrade from my roughly $80 electric grinder - but neither of these are available in India. Hoping they release it here in the next couple of months.
Also! I really enjoy watching your videos.
I've been making espresso out of an Encore for years now despite internet haters saying it can't be done. It's a fantastic machine for the money, and I'm glad they finally got a version that's designed with Espresso in mind. It's not a perfect machine by any means, but it's an excellent machine for most people. Baratza is also an awesome company, and you won't get better support for the money.
Also big-up lance for the grind-button remix, I'm glad someone has found a use for that thing.
Yes! Can do espresso with a simple shim! So glad it has served you well for so long. And thanks!
I was using my baratza encore somewhat successfully for espresso for a few months, I found the biggest drawbacks for espresso for me were that sometimes I would need to be in between clicks and that I couldn't get fine enough for some beans ( i think this one could be fixed with some modding) this new encore fixes those two issues. The Issue that was a dealbreaker for me was that it had too much retention for me with espresso grind and that made switching between pourover and espresso really unpleasant. I think that is still going to be an issue with this if someone is hoping for a grinder to do both it will only work if you are happy cleaning out your machine every time you want pourover after making espresso.
@@LanceHedrick under the burr?
I also manages to get espresso out of my old encore. I use to grind super fine and put it through the flair really nicely.
@@ebbbrock You can modify the grinder and remove the piece that clicks to make the Encore have stepless adjustment. If you're going back and fourth between Espresso and Pourover though you might just want to get a new grinder for Espresso and use the Encore for drip.
Do you know if it possible to drop the new adjustment ring in an old encore? Seems like you should be able to and in a virtuoso
@Lance: i Just got my varia vs3 wich you have in the Back but there is no Review on your Channel ?!?….any reason for That?…Greetz
Would this be adequate as a second grinder in a cafe just for decaf? Only like 15-30 grinds a day
Hey, Lance, I’ve been watching through your catalogue, and I wonder if you could answer this question. Is there an order of operations, some sort of PEMDAS one could use for dialing in espresso? As in, what factors take priority for adjustment, in what order, generally speaking?
Help! Total newbie question but I just got a Breville Barista Express. Should I use that grinder or get the Encore esp?😅
How does it compare to hand grinder like 1zpresso kmax or commandate? Is it worth upgrading if i dont mind hand grinding?
Can you buy the new encore burrs separately?
Can they be installed in the OG encore?
If so, are they much better for filter?
I know many people who use encore every day for filter!
These are loads better for filter. I didn't like the og burrs at all. THese are great after seasoning. Maybe email them to see if they are retrofittable
Wow you're on fire lately :-)
crazy releases as of late!!!
Gotta ask. Will it grind fine enought to use with bottomless porta filter? My cuisineart grinder doesnt grind fine enough. Want to make sure. Great video!
Thanks Lance! I just got one of these for ease when I don't feel like using my hand grinder. I'm impressed! What number grind setting do you suggest starting with for v60 on the esp?
If it launches with a few more color options, it will blow Fellow out of the water. It looks simple enough to appeal to the beginner market who are worried about having coffee takeover their kitchen.
Can the single dose hopper also work as a bellows to limit retention? Maybe moving its top up and down a few times? Thnx
Hey Lance, how does the encore esp compare to the fellow ode? Is it night and day? We make mostly filter but it would be so handy to have the option to do espresso
Ode can do espresso with the right burrs. But that costs a bit more money. If you're doing just occaisiinal espresso, it is fine. I'd personally choose ode and have the option of changing burrs
Great video. I've been trying to decide between Baratza and a Eureka. Question, where would I get the single dose hopper for the Baratza ?
Based on your assessment of the ESP, do you think it will be possible to upgrade an existing regular Encore to use the new adjustment system? I just upgraded to a Niche, but I'd love to upgrade my Encore to give to a family member who also drinks espresso.
In the past, Baratza has sold enough parts to upgrade on other models.
That's something you should email their support team about! I don't think it would be possible only because the insides are so vastly different from the original. I bet the burrs could be replaced but I'm not sure on the threading
Hey Lance - does the new Breville pro essentially have one of these grinders built in now? Or do I need to upgrade?
ayo that beatboxing tho you're nasty with it
Thought esp version is less loud as the previous version. But more important do you like the sound? Could you recommend grinder with nice sound?
Hello. I just bought recently this Baratza encore ESP machine, but I have not gotten yet the good espresso I wished. I bought Bustelo supreme whole beans, and I am using grinder #15-18. I haven’t gotten yet that creamy espresso. I would like to ask you how many grams are needed for a shot of 2 espressos in a de’longhi dedica maestro plus machine? And also, what grinder number do you recommend to get a creamy espresso?
Thank you for your time and your excellent video
