Who do you think will win? Do you have any suggestions for the next Challenge Accepted? Are you a miles person or do you run in kilometres? Let us know in the comments below!
I thought Jess would've won. I actually thought the pros were gonna really overdo it and run like 10k and be like "oh man I totally didn't even feel like I just ran 10k. Hmm, I must be in great shape". Really good video with a surprise ending
I run in kilometres as it’s a roughly measurable distance for me and I have no sense of distance! I don’t usually check my watch when running, I rely on the buzz to let me know whether I’ve hit a kilometre, then check the other metrics afterwards. I’d say Sarah would probably win the challenge. Yay Sarah!!! I haven’t seen the end yet but I have every confidence in her ability to do what I can’t 😂
I stopped running with a watch a few years ago and it has been wonderful. I run how I feel and the route falls under my feet as it is. Makes my runs all the more fun not being burdened by the technology. I log the route and what I saw and felt. No longer tracking exact mileage or pace. Old school running for fun!
Such fun to watch. Love these challenges. I particularly like the challenges where the participants are on equal footing and do not depend on their ability, how fast they're usually running etc!
"Internal tirade of abuse!" 😆 I think Andy's inner voice and mine are pals! Loved the dialog of confusion and second guessing- it makes every challenge a good time- for the viewers, any way! 😆 Congratulations Sarah!
Haha, great challenge. I put my bet on George. Running in open terrain and judging 400m portions seems the most sensible approach to make this work. Well that was before he decided to definitely not wanting to stop short of 5k. Well done, Sarah and good luck for Marathon Day!
Well done Sarah! I had a difficult time trying to guess who would win, you're all so brilliant runners. I've been running since the 80s, so didn't have the fancy watches like now, I would run my routes just by knowing the distance, and wasn't bothered by the amount of time, just enjoying the moment. But this would be a fun challenge...
I would love to see the Running Channel take on a relay type challenge! Maybe build 2 or 4 teams (none of the stacked with all super speedy people) and then complete a relay course and see which team comes out of top. I think this would work because you could pick distances that work for each team member and have to strategize who to put where etc. Funnily enough I had to run without music/headphones this morning! First time doing a 5k without it, and surprisingly it was ok.
Best challenge so far! Running whilst "listening" to your own body (outside of competitive races), and relying on your mind, is so important. Also, not everyone has the means to purchase all this technology, and many runners are in areas where signal reception is poor/non-existent (not blessed to be in cities or countries with good comms service).
Running channel bingo card. A free run where you have to find various landmarks, people, situations, locations, etc. Who ever makes bingo first wins, but also shortest distance to bingo also wins.
Back before I got my watch, I’s start Strava on my phone, stick it in my pocket, run a route I knew was roughly 10k, take the phone out near the end to finish at an even 10km, and it would always be a big surprise whether how I felt it went agreed with what Strava said for average pace and running time. I’d be like… this feels like a 5:20 average pace run and the Strava would say 5:23, or 5:17. But having to guess the distance seems like it would be even more difficult! I’m going to try this one myself some time! Just need to find somewhere I’ve never run before!
I’m going for Sarah 🙌🏻 all that marathon training recently should have given her a good idea for how her pace feels 🤞🏻 Would love to see the team race a Beer Mile 🍻
love this! Just a thought - it would be nice to see some coverage on the RC for 'veteran' runners. By which I mean over 45 yrs as whilst I love what you guys do, I can't really relate as a 51 yr old female as perhaps I would like to?
Team Sarah is my guess. She did a lot of training these days so should have a natural feel for distance. Will try out this challenge myself. I run a lot of 4-7 km runs. Curious how I'll do without tech! / Edit: Update: I did it a few weeks afterwards and got to 4.1 km. Certainly room for improvement. That's why I swore I'd reduce to look at my watch ever so often. Indeed, got more in tune what a certain pace and certain breathing feels like. Thanks for getting me off from my hardware dependency!
Running Channel Love love this awesome video, cas it’s way way cool. Love to see it, runners running without the watch. So cool, Love to see more of it. Maybe a 10km one without a watch? (Running Channel) Would be so funny if someone guessed half of it, (lol) or Running Channel even funny if someone ran double the distance. lol. Ran 20km, thinking it was 10km, lol.
Well done! The added challenge is that you all were filming which causes distraction. With a fair amount of focus, you may have been able to “count” 400 yard splits and get slightly closer. Since simple challenge! Not easy to do, but simple in design. As we head into winter, more people start running on a treadmill, and both time and cadence become a focal point. It’s a great way to work on shorter strides and higher cadence!
It is of course cheating, but I could end up on exactly 5km (or as close as makes no never mind) simply by running my standard 5km route. :D I thought Andy or George given their running levels and long-time experience would have been hot favourites for this challenge... I was soooo wrong.
When it comes to predicting time, I'm no Jack Reacher, Jack Reacher fans will know what I mean. I must admit to having added on a couple of minutes to my predicted Parkrun times when asked "how do you think you will do?" so when the text message come through with my time, I can smugly say "oh, I didn't think I'd be that quick"....I've unfortunatly started to add 5 mins on recently.
Great vid. & challenge! Before GPS watches, when I ran even as a freshman in high school cross country 5ks - my coach would brag to our rival team's coach that he had me pacing by feel the upperclassmen to his desired finish times for them. At least we had mile splits to help me do that, but I'd come in spot on for the miles at whatever pace he asked me to. Today? No way I could EVER do that. I'd love to get back to that, though.
Nice challenge, I think I would be awful at this 😂. I have a challenge accepted suggestion... Run a mile all out. The winner is the person with the fastest pace relative to their best 5k time in the last few years. E.g. if my best 5k time in recent years was 25 mins (5 min per km) and I managed a mile in 7 mins (4:21 per km) then 5:00 (300 secs) / 4:21 (261 secs) is ~ 1.15. A score of 1 means the same pace >1 is faster.
Funny, I am sure I could find a track location that I am unfamiliar with ;-) I stopped the replay and my money is still on Andy thought George could be close. It's about mileage: a pro can probably hit his target for a 5k and do it. Then, as I watch the video and the sunset on Anna, I am thinking this would be a great strategy: leave exactly 5k before sunset at easy pace. Now, I saw the end: Congrats Anna. As for how I would get on: I could not even hit my paces today with my watch on my wrist :-)
Great challenge. I know I am absolutely rubbish at guessing pace and distance. If I had got anywhere between 4km and 6km I would be amazed. Looking forward to the next challenge. :-)
Our Saturday morning treat….catching up with The Running Channel! We are K people OK…😍 Watching right now!! We think Sarah superstar is going to win! We love you all❤️🤪
Nice challenge. Bit surprised that no one got really close. Could it be because of miles-km? Well, don't know it it has been done, but maybe run a route, 5k, 8k or something. And the one who draws the best image (animal, word, whatever) with his run on the map wins? Could get a viewers vote?
I don’t use a watch for park run as waiting for the e mail is part of the day. I did enjoy the halfway bell when I did couch to5 k. I’m 70 been running 12 months and got pb last Saturday of 30.13. Woo hoo !
Erm yes Sarah, looking at your watch when you're not supposed to is cheating 🤓 I'd like to challenge you all to the run/rest pyramid. It's a bit of a mammoth so I don't know how practical it is. Essentially you run 1 mile and rest for 1 hour. You then run 2 miles and rest 2 hours. You then run 3 miles and rest 3 hours.....keep going until you can't. The person reaching the highest distance run is the winner.
Running before not much technology, (well driving it the car beforehand😃) to having it, now watching that put me back 20plus years 😂 well done all of you
I guess if I was allowed to run in a neighborhood where I run, I'd be pretty good at it because obviously I know where each Kms are :D In a new environment I'd just try to judge the distance based on the average distance between bus stops/buildings... I'll give it a go! :D Awesome Challenge idea Jess!
I’d be rubbish at this, but I think I’d definitely underestimate, I’ve had many a disappointed moment when I’m exhausted and think I must be nearly done, then glance at the watch and realise I have 4km more to go! (On a 10K race).
I probably could not do this challenge, for the exact reason I know my exact distance without looking at my watch. I've been running around the same area so much since so long ago that I can tell you the length of each section of my runs with less then 100m margin. However, if you put me in an unknown location, my spatial awareness would be completely messed up, and I would probably be waaaaaay off...
Challenge idea 💡 A lot of us runners cross train with bikes 🚴… wait, wait hear me out!! How about a mini duathlon challenge, but run times will be handicapped to make it fair? And leave the bike times open 😎. Ken 🇮🇪
Orienteering! Plenty of street or park based orienteering routes. Including phone based ones (Maprun). I mean who doesn't want to see Andy trying to navigate without GPS? 😀
Ooh guessing distance is one of my talents! I rarely run with technology, but my running buddy always has a watch. Whenever we try out a new route I sometimes ask for a km check, and he always makes me guess before he tells me. I think the furthest I've been off by was about 10 meters. This is a running challenge I could actually do well in LOL!
Do a long distance bleep test! Start with your current 5k pace and add 1:00/km. Start running and your first km has to be at that pace, the second km 10 seconds faster, the third 20 seconds faster, etc. Whoever lasts longest wins!
Ok, I know I am late to the party, but whatever. Fortunately I live in an area where I have lots of different running options and so it is easy to vary the length of my run based on the turns that I take. I have a sign in the middle of nowhere here, that when I run to that sign, then turn left there and come back, I will do 5.3km. And I can basically vary any run in length on that basis. It also makes it much easier for me to not concentrate on the watch, but just run on what I feel and enjoy the outdoors. Also, the watch gives me a buzz at 1k every time, so I more or less know where the buzzes are. 😉 Put me in an environment that I don't know though, and I bet I would finish on 2.7.😄
A potential challenge idea, run a 5 mile run but it's a Scottish Munro? I don't have full encyclopedic knowledge of them but I know Mount Keen would make a good challenging trail run
Dollar, nickels and dimes: 1 mile, 5 pull ups, 10 push ups under ten minutes, who can repeat the most sets! Let’s test who has been doing their strength work! (Finishing a set early means you can rest, but had to go faster..)
Fun challenge! I don't know if I'd be able to determine the distance of my run. I would probably base my assumptions on how i feel. I know that at around 35 minutes i feel the endorphins kicking in, but I'd have to stop before that.
I find that I tend to underestimate a little bit when I'm road running, though for the most part I can kinda tell where I'm at. Trail running though? Boy do I overestimate that! I swear it'll feel like I've done at least 5k, check the watch and it's telling me I've only done 2k?? Rude.
I'd have to be dropped off in a foreign land. I know all the distances/landmarks around my house from my door step. Everything is planned out from a 3.1 mile loop to a 22 mile loop. Cheers friends, keep up the fun content.
Way to go Sarah! I would totally overthink it and probably not tun very far, thinking i'd run 5km or think telling myself i'd be feeling that and end up running 6-8km!
I wouldn’t be able to do this accurately. I reckon I would set off too quickly and do about 3.6km thinking it was 5km. I might have to cheat and do the Park Run route.
🤣 Thought I was the only one that dreaded the thought of misjudging distance and having to walk back, cause there is no way I am running further than my Garmin programme tells me🙈 - I am a restarting beginner runner again!
Great challenge. I've got an old Garmin which no longer syncs with the computer so put it on when I run and generally check it when I get back. Just like to know how far and fast after I've finished.
I would not be great at this challenge I think I would be under despite in my mind thinking I am going over to be safe! I did run a marathon once without a watch to keep myself in check to not re-injure myself. What an amazing experience to run and just take it all in.
Great challenge. How about a new challenge where you have to pick up 10 random items from shops and different people in the shortest distance and time overall?
I run with a watch but not as flash as these. Also I can't read it outside!!! So I never know until I finish now far I've gone. However I am not in training for anything ..... and I am thinking about getting a new watch.
I’ve got various routes near me where I know about how long they are so I don’t look at my watch much unless I’m doing intervals or something, but drop me into an unknown area and I’d be completely at sea! This was fun to watch
Run without a watch loads (ie use landmarks for distance) and don’t really get the obsession with data but wouldn’t have a clue in this challenge. A really difficult one but looks lots of fun.
What a great challenge! I’d be all over the place at that. I terrible at judging time and distance... just ask anyone who’s been on a group run or ride that I’ve lead!!
I want to try it out 😀 I would run till my mind says 5k and then complete the rest if it's less. However I would need the watch to monitor HR. Just won't see the km reading 😀
Who do you think will win? Do you have any suggestions for the next Challenge Accepted? Are you a miles person or do you run in kilometres? Let us know in the comments below!
The next challenge should be who can keep the same or close to the same average pace per km for for 30 minutes. Without looking at your smart watch.
I thought Jess would've won. I actually thought the pros were gonna really overdo it and run like 10k and be like "oh man I totally didn't even feel like I just ran 10k. Hmm, I must be in great shape". Really good video with a surprise ending
Hi! Sarah! You’re the best! Love watching this channel because of you!! Call me some time 😉 when you visit the states!
Hi Guys love the channel ! the next challenge should be how slowly you can run a 5k for all those runners who struggle to get below 40 mins.
I’d be awful - always use my watch as a motivation. Missing Rick with his “music as a timer” technique.
Lol watching this I realize I know the three-mile mark in every direction from my house.
Ha! I know what you mean, Brian! I'd have to go somewhere unfamiliar to try this!
New challenge idea: run 10km as fast as you can, but every km has to be faster than the previous one. So, if your next km is slower, you are out
Yes... and only looking when the km lap time comes up, no checking during each km
They've done a 5k version of this
I stopped running with a watch a few years ago and it has been wonderful. I run how I feel and the route falls under my feet as it is. Makes my runs all the more fun not being burdened by the technology. I log the route and what I saw and felt. No longer tracking exact mileage or pace. Old school running for fun!
Pretty confident I’d be awful at this challenge!
It's a tricky one for sure!
Me too! I have a horrible sense of direction so I'm sure I cannot guesstimate distance well.
Jess needs to be a full time presenter, she’s awesome and a bit cheeky like Sarah!
Such fun to watch. Love these challenges. I particularly like the challenges where the participants are on equal footing and do not depend on their ability, how fast they're usually running etc!
"apart from when I was as a tube" 😂 Sarah, you're hilarious.
Great video, defiantly going to give this a go. I thought team Andy would have it! All the marathon training has paid off with the timing Sarah!
I think Andy will win! I love watching these challenges! So much fun!
Glad you enjoy them! Thanks for watching 🙂
Team Andy as well.

Also, not everyone has the means to purchase all this technology, and many runners are in areas where signal reception is poor/non-existent (not blessed to be in cities or countries with good comms service).
Love that! Thanks for watching!
Would love the newcomer Jess to win!
Fantastic! Thanks so much for watching!
Thumbs up to Jess for such a great challenge. Fun, a little bit scary and hilarious all rolled into one.
Well done Sarah. That is a tricky one. I think I would land below the 5k mark. Thank you Jess for the great challenge.
Running channel bingo card. A free run where you have to find various landmarks, people, situations, locations, etc. Who ever makes bingo first wins, but also shortest distance to bingo also wins.
I knew George had gone too far!! I wanted to yell "Don't run to the gate! Stop, George!" ha!
Back before I got my watch, I’s start Strava on my phone, stick it in my pocket, run a route I knew was roughly 10k, take the phone out near the end to finish at an even 10km, and it would always be a big surprise whether how I felt it went agreed with what Strava said for average pace and running time. But having to guess the distance seems like it would be even more difficult!
I’m going to try this one myself some time! Just need to find somewhere I’ve never run before!
Awesome challenge, and allowed you all to be on an equal playing field. That was a fun video to watch, well done team!!!
Great challenge idea Jess! I am going to try to get my Strava group to try this. :) Congrats Sarah.
I’m going for Sarah 🙌🏻 all that marathon training recently should have given her a good idea for how her pace feels 🤞🏻
Would love to see the team race a Beer Mile 🍻
Such a good idea! Definitely something to try with friends or a running group!!!
Well done Sarah! I had visions of Anna sitting at home watching this with a big bag of popcorn laughing at how badly everyone thought they were doing!
love this! Just a thought - it would be nice to see some coverage on the RC for 'veteran' runners. By which I mean over 45 yrs as whilst I love what you guys do, I can't really relate as a 51 yr old female as perhaps I would like to?
Yes! Would love to see some 50+ runners on the channel to represent the many older runners out there.
Very true, Conrad!
it’s too terrifying to contemplate running without technology :)
Yay Sarah! I’m not surprised you went over. 5k must feel like nothing compared to your long runs 😆
Running Channel
Love love this awesome video, cas it’s way way cool. Love to see it, runners running without the watch.
So cool, Love to see more of it. Maybe a 10km one without a watch? (Running Channel)
Would be so funny if someone guessed half of it, (lol) or Running Channel even funny if someone ran double the distance. lol.
Ran 20km, thinking it was 10km, lol.
I never realized how many canals England has. I love these different locations.
We're reliably informed that Birmingham has more canals than Venice.
Well done! The added challenge is that you all were filming which causes distraction. With a fair amount of focus, you may have been able to “count” 400 yard splits and get slightly closer.

I think Andy will be the winner

Have to say I would be within 100m or so if I ran locally. But anywhere else I would be lucky to get within plus or minus 0.5k anywhere else!
A potential challenge idea, run a 5 mile run but it's a Scottish Munro? I don't have full encyclopedic knowledge of them but I know Mount Keen would make a good challenging trail run

So hard to judge distance.
I would try to count steps knowing my stride is roughly 1.09m.🥴

Yeah, Sara, you did it. Congratulations.
How goes the moniker: "Did you even run, if you didn't not tracking it?"
Suggestion for a challenge. Run to draw your route on Strava to look like an item that is only revealed when you beign to run..
Очень интересный челленж 👍 Теперь мне тоже захотелось это попробовать 🏃♂️🙂
Just watching this is realized how much I depend on tech. 🤭
Are you inspired to try running without a watch, Christopher?
@@runningchannel errrr....I am not sure my body is ready for that just yet. 😂
I wouldn’t be able to do this accurately. I reckon I would set off too quickly and do about 3.6km thinking it was 5km. I might have to cheat and do the Park Run route.
This is a crazy challenge. I couldn’t guess it at all as I’ve only ever ran a “flat” 5k twice but living in Cumbria flat is impossible!
surely, andy, with all the miles he must have clocked up he should have good distance awareness?
The thought of running without my watch terrifies me! In fact, I don't think my inner stato would even allow it 😀 Great Challenge - well done Sarah!
Interesting challenge. Wondering how time and distance we perceive is matched by the reality. Think I’d underestimate 5K.
I’d count my steps. My Garmin says I’m running roughly 1.2 meter per step for a regular run, so I’d count to around 4200 steps and stop.
I actually love running without looking on my watch and listen to my body instead. Always surprised by the recorded data afterwards though.
Watching this while walking, trying to reach my daily 10k, thinking I must be at about 8k. Reality: 5k 🤣
Going with Andy on this one. He's got enough experience and savvy to know exactly when 5K is reached. Right, Andy?
I would definitelly end up finishing at 4km or less :D NO way I could ever try to guess the distance I ran without my watch.
I would not be great at this challenge I think I would be under despite in my mind thinking I am going over to be safe! I did run a marathon once without a watch to keep myself in check to not re-injure myself. What an amazing experience to run and just take it all in.
Fun challenge! I think my strategy would be to run at what feels like 5 km race pace and stop when I'm too tired. Maybe I'll try it sometime.
If anyone is willing to send me some running shoes/watch I'd appreciate it so much. Much love from Kenya, the home of distance running
Think I'd be way out... would set off too fast, end up shattered and consequently undercut the distance by a good km I reckon. 🙈
I’ve got various routes near me where I know about how long they are so I don’t look at my watch much unless I’m doing intervals or something, but drop me into an unknown area and I’d be completely at sea! This was fun to watch
I think George will win💪🏻☺️Andy second😁😎👍🏻Great challenge👏🏻🤗
Because I do Galloway Run-walk intervals, I think I would be extra terrible at running with no tech.
This is a cool challenge. It's done to now yourself enought to be able to get that done! (What's DHB by the way)...
I think everyone is going to have gone further than they think. Andy I reckon will be closest, maybe 5.2km
Run without a watch loads (ie use landmarks for distance) and don’t really get the obsession with data but wouldn’t have a clue in this challenge. A really difficult one but looks lots of fun.
Such a good challenge!! I think I’d be terrible at this. Easy if I started from my house though 🤣😉
Another fun option, set a distance (5km) and everyone predicts their time. Watches put away and closest to their prediction, wins!
Would be interesting to try out myself and see how it goes :) I think Andy will win
Did you know that if you add all of your scores together you get exactly 20. So the average of you is perfect
