One of the best things about the Church was that they stood above much of the chaos of the music scene of the 80s and got international recognition with strong songs and brilliant musicianship.
I saw these guys so many times on Sydney's Northern beaches in the 80's, never did a bad gig, so many great songs.....good to hear them after many years
Tear it all away tricks me every time with its false start and climbing bass line that eventually leads to the main key, as if there's some kind of secret music preceding the song. Perhaps it's somewhere hiding in the sky??-as how the video starts. The intermingling guitars and unexpected release which peaks on the briefly lingering high D(Peter). The anguish in Steve's voice is cradled so sensitively by the accompaniment. Surpasses pop perfection.
"She Never Said" - 3:16 "Tear It All Away" - 4:18 "Don't Open the Door to Strangers" (Kilbey, Willson-Piper) - 3:27 or "For a Moment We're Strangers" - 3:52 "Tear It All Away" - 4:10 "Don't Open the Door to Strangers" (Kilbey, Willson-Piper) - 3:24
never knew this song existed. it is great. wish i had seen them in concert back in 1988 with Echo & the Bunnymen, but it never happened. I went to see Echo, but instead of the Church opening up, we got the Leather Nun. They were booed off the set...
I think this is my favorite song ever. Found this album at a garage sale (well an ex of mine actually found it), it always makes my day. How were these guys not a bigger band? Oh and on the vinyl this track is listed as "Fighter Pilot...Korean War". That might be why some here think it wasn't on the LP. Anyone know why it was changed?
I can't answer your question specifically, but here in Australia when this song was released as a single (1981), it was never included on either of the first two albums. The Church keeping it interesting I guess.
This brings me to tears. The Church summer of 1982, lowly paid struggling in life, music was my salvation. Of Skins & Heart ❤
Good Lord, what a fantastic song. Very underrated band
I am so heartened by all the love here for this brilliant, brilliant group 🌟
If I can go back in time it will be the 80's again.

One of the best intros to one of the best songs ever!
The alternative to pub rock in the 80"s. Thank you to the Church for giving us some thing else to listen to.
Yup, they were the best.
Stevie's beautiful bass line and Marty's jingle jangle guitar. Gorgeous.
Freshcookies 21 and Ploogy’s weird left hand grip.
Yeah .that bass line
Marty probably wrote
the bass line, and played
it on the record.
The best band of the 80s and 90s. This song still haunts me to this day.
And still..to this day..it haunts many of us, how could it not!
This is one of their best songs.
Bought this album in 1981 instead of a record store clerk's suggestion of A Flock of Seagulls. Made the right choice, huh?!
They're *_both_* badass bands. The Paul Reynolds era of _'A Flock Of Seagulls'_ is just a masterpiece all around...
he made the right choice.
Considering that was a year before the first Flock of Seagulls album came out, probably made the right choice if you wanted a record that day...
Should have bought both
Both
The most underrated band of all time.
such a classic song i absolutely love it and can't get enough i seriously can't emphasize how much i love this song!!!
I saw these guys so many times on Sydney's Northern beaches in the 80's, never did a bad gig, so many great songs.....good to hear them after many years
Another of my very favorite church songs.
How come I'm the only person who has commented on this great song by such a great band

LOL -- RUclips used the timestamps for this song-----
Why is this song not on Spotify!!??
So totally groovy! LOVE IT! The Church rule!
Best Mullets from the 80’s 👍
Yes, yes they do. And still making amazing music.

Bon anniversaire Steve Kilbey!!!
Along with the Triffids Australia's best ever.
Go Betweens also superb mate
Richard Ploog, great drummer
Totally agree. What a shame it all fell apart for him. His contributions
to their 80s output was immense

Can't stand this band 🤔🙄😁
This is their second best song. Only "Myrrh" from the Heyday album is better. Truly the best band on the planet. Greetings from Norway:)
Funny. You might be the only person in the world I agree with on that ranking. Myrrh is my favorite but most go with Milky Way.
I thnk Myrrh is the best album opener in the history of modern music.
They got that 60's mophead look. Cool.
saudade
Really loved this. Made the UK release of the album so much better than OSAH.
As good as songwriting gets.
Not on the original Of Skins and Heart LP
It was a single. it's bonus track on the CD.
😊.
killer
That's not Richard ploog on drums??
