I see people laughing at the really bad lip syncing but the reason for this is because Pixies infamously hated lip syncing and the only way they could come close is to just open their mouths wide. While intially done as a protest action, this intentional bad lip syncing actually makes the video more entertaining in the end.

If it's unclear, the song's about one or more Hobos dying in an earthquake. It all fits - waiting outside for a boxcar with a blue face and by a fire, eating at a soup kitchen, etc. Just imagine it takes place in the 1930s instead of later on, and it feels a lot more common. The part that feels a bit scary is that Kim's saying "so long, so long" as if implying "goodbye" like the hobos are actually waiting for "their man" the grim reaper to take them away.
@@101Volts That's a very interesting take and even more interesting concern for a hobo (my bad. must be more 'inclusive' these days so 'hobos' and 'hobas') 👍

REM’s first video effort was called “REM Succumbs.” They’d broken big without MTV and likely thought videos were self indulgent and stupid. Vids were weird but good-think Stipe’s lyrics in pictures.
What I loved about this video since it first came out is how the guitarist looks straight at the camera with a little smirk and head bob that says, "Yeah. This is one of the lamest guitar solos ever written, and there's nothing you can do about it." Gorgeous!
I discovered the pixies less than 6 years ago, but when I listen to their songs for the first time it is as if I had listened to them forever, and they evoke feelings like when you remember a pleasant moment with the songs of your childhood, but without any specific memory because it was not part of my childhood.

Here comes your man

Big shake on the box car moving
Big shake to the land that's falling down
Is a wind makes a palm stop blowing
A big, big stone fall and break my crown
There is a wait so long

You'll never wait so long

I see people laughing at the really bad lip syncing but the reason for this is because Pixies infamously hated lip syncing and the only way they could come close is to just open their mouths wide. While intially done as a protest action, this intentional bad lip syncing actually makes the video more entertaining in the end.
That and if I remember they didn't want to put this song in but producer said it would be good. Don't quote be on that tho I'm just some kid on the internet

Outside there's a box car waiting
Outside the family stew
Out by the fire breathing
Outside we wait 'til face turns blue
I know the nervous walking
I know the dirty beard hangs
Out by the box car waiting
Take me away to nowhere plains
There is a wait so long
You'll never wait so long
Here comes your man

Big shake on the box car moving
Big shake to the land that's falling down
Is a wind makes a palm stop blowing
A big, big stone fall and break my crown

Most underrated band in R&R history. Kurt Cobain reference them in so many of his hand written notes. They were far ahead of their time.
To be honest I don't think they're underrated. Everyone who knows thinks they're great. Bowie was a huge fan

I know the Pixies didn't care too much for this song when they recorded, but my 2-year old daughter loves it. I play this when I need her to settle down. Works every time.
I can still remember the first time I heard this song 30 years ago. A friend and I were driving home from a weekend trip. He put a cassette-tape (you may need to look this up...) a girl had recorded for him into the stereo, and suddenly it started playing with that unforgettable TWANG. It immediately stuck in my head. And although he hated it, I rewound played it again around ten times. Since then I never have to think for a second when someone asks me what my favorite song is.
To this day, ever since I saw this video back in like 1990, I still sing along to songs just holding my mouth open. Thanks Pixies!
lol same here man. i read somewhere they did this just hanging their mouths open as a protest because some executive at NBC demanded they use a recorded track rather than actually play live when they came on the show.
