Key note, don’t fly higher in high wind when it’s drifting. Get down low-chances are wind speeds are lower closer to the ground and that might give you a chance. Glad you recovered the footage but even better that it still flies. Great testament to the quality of DJI’s product.
damn hahahahahahhahahaha first flight today it was windy i went up to 60 m my app disconected and the drone disapeard xD when i reconected i managed to get it back but fuck me my heart was racing xD on the footage it apears the drone went like atleast 60 mph sideways ha ha ha
Everyone here should check out another you tuber's video about his mavic mini crashing into the sea, lying on the sand next to the waves, swamped by sea water for 6-8 hours, then after being found later that day/night, and after a cleaning, flying again without problems. What a remarkable company and product! Great video and so clever at being able to more closely pinpoint the drone's final landing spot. This is a great video for teaching all of us both how to fly and how to back up flight info on your cell so you can better locate your drone if lost. Thanks again. Good luck with your studies. I love the UK, but not the rain (speaking from southern Califonria :) !!!
Glad he got it back and acknowledges some of the mistakes he made. But there are many more unacknowledged precautions that could have been taken. I havea manic mini and have never lost it (touch wood). Here's my checks: 1. Stick a label on the drone of your phone number [2. A Mavic mini now requires registration in the UK as it has a camera - so you also have to put your operator number on it - a rule that wasn't in place when this video was made] 3. Use the 'UAV Forecast' app to see forecast of wind gusts in your area. If gusts are over 18mph, don't fly. 4. If you get a Strong wind warning, lower your altitude - don't increase altitude. Wind speed increases with altitude. 5. If you've spent around £400 on a drone, spend £10 more to get a dedicated memory card for it! Don't put a memory card of precious memories in a flying lump of plastic that has an inherrent risk of being lost. 6. Put a text file on the memory card that contains your phone number and email address. If someone finds it, they may try to read teh memory card. 7. When flying away from you, try to fly into the wind. This means that when you fly back you will have a tail wind that will help it get back.
What a terrible experience, but what a story, and the great testament to the mavic mini, and also honest people in the world, Thank you for sharing your experiences. God bless you and your family
Really enjoyed this. Totally agree with you that MM is not designed for wind. Glad that you got her back. The best policy with a wind warning is to drop altitude rapidly and head home. Beginners forget that wind increases considerably with altitude. I have a work colleague intent on buying one and have tipped him off on this common mistake.
Ohhh man I recently had a scary experience, I was in sport mode with harsh winds and it wasn’t going anywhere!! It was just pushing the drone further away from me. Worst part about it I was above a massive forest!! Luckily I was able to bring it down below the wind area and bring it back!!
I lost my mavic mini here in Canada last week and I am waiting to hear back from the farmer. One thing I learnt is never control your drone from an electric car as it always gave me calibration error and the final moments of my drone are most dramatic..I could see her but was unable to control it.
that's super cool and awesome. having lost all hope of finding and then finally you get it and have it fly back again. is something of a bliss and ecstasy. cheers to you. i almost got my dji tello lost for close to 3 to 4 times - strong winds, disorientation and drifting away. every time i take it in the air, i pray it gets back home safe.
I completely lived the moment when I lost mine (in the ocean) through your storytelling :( When I think about all the footage I took just before the incident... It's still haunting me! Another advice, don't use the RTH function if it's windy and having few footage is better than nothing so don't fly longer as you will be tempted to try some crazy moves. I liked your storytelling ;-)
Love the video. The edit, the narrative, the footage... Great one! I expected something different and I am happy it wasn't that :) Have to be completely honest, I skipped the commercial.
Well, what I use in a stew is carrots, diced up and onions, Potatoes, coriander and a touch of salt and pepper. Put on a slow heat with beef or lamb cut up. I like to partly cook meat first. Add gravy granules after about 2 minutes, stir, then place lid back on the pan. Yorkshire puddings are great.. Place in oven on low heat, then turn up to make a bit crispy just before stew is done.. Put Yorkshires on a plate, then pour and place stew into the Yorkshire.... Pinch of Pepper over the top after is great.
Bruv this was indeed a touching story, I just discovered your channel and this video has made me realize how much of a good story teller you are. I will surely subscribe right now cause I would like to see more of your content. Take care bruv.
Bloody hell mate.. I was riveted to the screen. What an amazing, hypnotic video. I think it is your voice. You have a great radio/tv voice. Any way I have a MM on order and this will be a big help.
I am glad you got it back! I almost lost might 2 times next to my house as houses block the signals and wi fi so it was gone for 5 -10 minutes but then came back :)
Excellent sleuthing my dear Watson! That was great work narrowing the location. You should submit this to @DJI to showcase it's durability. There's another person who got theirs shot right through the battery and still made it home safely!!!
I just bought the mini SE. It’s challenging to fly it in deserts of Southern California because it’s often very windy. I’ve learned from your experience and I will be more cautious when the winds are strong. Have a great time flying.
Awesome story! Glad there was a happy ending, and what a great review for not only the cautionary measures one would need to take with a drone in windy conditions, but also for the resilience of this little drone. I am trying to get up to Retail Courage to finally buy a DJI Mini. It would be my second drone, but the first one I had was not really anything fancy. So this would legitimately be my first.
I have almost lost 2 drones in my time flying due to random gusts of wind, best thing to do is put it in sport mode, throttle forward and descend. You will eventually get some control and try to land it safely
Good to know and I just watched a wind limit test, but seeing what that little drone has gone through and that it still can fly and beyond insane. I’m glad you get it back and that it landed somewhere “safe”.
Thanks for sharing that video. I just striating flying again after locking my drone up for about 2 years and have been worried about losing it. This video actually helps a lot. I also love the cinematic effect you have put into it. Good work!
Amazing video! Your delivery and editing skills are top notch. One point of contention though, I’m certain the mini can fly in winds greater than 16mph. I’ve personally flown mine in 20+ mph winds without having it drift(significantly) and fly directly into that wind at around 3 meters per second.
Great you got it back. I have learned never ever fly in the wind. I have apps telling me if it is safe, also wind speeds. Wind direction is very important. Flying with the wind behind you is fine, return to home can be another story with a head on wind. Many a drone has been lost as battery runs out of power on return, if too far away, trying to fight head on wind.
That was some amazing detective mathematics that you devised to narrow down the search for the lost Mini2 drone based on wind speed and direction. Hearing that you walked right past the drone the day after it crash-landed, yet didn't spot it, inspires hope that my AWOL Mavic 1 Pro fitted with a jumbo battery and missing in action during a 12-mile Litchi waypoint mission last month, may yet show up since my phone numbers are scrawled on the chassis. The over-engineering of DJI drones is a thing of wonder, and seeing that muddied and repeatedly soaked Mini 2 flying perfectly after being subjected to the elements for weeks on end is testimony to DJI's design and manufacturing philosophy. Superb presentation by the way sir. You speak with the measured cadence of a seasoned raconteur, cutting to the chase with none of the usual RUclips waffle. That'll be 5 quid for the free compliment.
Great video. I've flown my Mavic Mini in some quite gusty conditions, +16mph winds easily (watch my Triple Mavic Mini video or Warning Xtreme Wind video, both are filmed in very strong winds and show my Mavic Mini handling it fine), far windier than I feel is safe to fly any drone really! I usually fly in quite calm conditions, 10mph or less, it's no fun watching your drone get battered by strong winds or struggle to land! If the wind speed exceeds the max speed the Mavic Mini can fly at, it's goodbye Mavic Mini, those motors and that Lithium Ion battery just don't have the power to overcome much beyond +20nph winds. Remember at altitude, that 15mph wind on the ground, can be more than double!! ⚠️😯 I think DJI quote 18mph as the max wind speed it can cope with. Good job getting it back and it still works, always back up your footage after every flight. Things I learnt flying my Mavic Mini- Don't fly in strong winds EVER! Watch those wind warnings, reduce altitude helps. Keep a close eye on battery level, once you go beyond 50% there is a drastic reduction in power that can be used by the motors due to the very gradual discharge curve of Lithium Ion batteries! Always, always fly into the wind, that way if you get a problem and it struggles to cope with the wind, it will drift back to you! Watch the drones speed, if it drops and your still pushing forward, this should tell you it's struggling, put it in sport mode, lower altitude and fly back. If all else fails and you see it drifting away, press land but make sure your over land, before you lose signal⚠️ That way you have a better idea of where it landed Hope some of that helps but I guess you have figured out most of that by now?⚠️😎😁👍
Surprised that the mini doesnt automatically transfers video footage to ur cell phone when flying and doesnt fly back home when disconnected from the remote. Glad u found the drone and amazed by it still working.
Lost mine for 1 year! Forgot to reset home on the GPS when flew it at a place about 30 miles from home. Drone got above trees, lost situation awareness due to wind and when I sent it "home", instead of coming back to my feet, ZOOM ZOOM it went heading back to home. A farmer found it in his field a year later and found me via the registration number and I got it back Only one broken arm and a quick rebuild and we're back good as new. But I'm way more careful now about when and where I fly it and always reset 'home' before we take off. Lesson learned for sure.
Such a fine review sir...As mentioned by another viewer, you added an emotional component that we all feel when flying our drones. Others fail to capture that as well as you have. With my drone, I always feel a little nerves here and there so I watched your report with sympathy and appreciation. Well done. :)
Holy cow! What a drama...🤯 I am so happy you got the drone and footage back! I had several times the same wind issues and it drifted backwards to the ocean with 20 mph while I pushed it fully forwards in sport mode. I just thought "good bye mini". But then I had the idea that the drone should act like a sail when descending as it has an angle of attack... and it did! I was able to recover the drone with that manouver about 5 times when winds were much too strong and gusty. Also the winds near the ground are much weaker as every tree or object works like a wind brake. Cool that your predicted landing zone was exact. Regards from Germany 😁
I need to be honest with you. With the title of the video, I just took you for an amateur who just didn't know what he was doing. After watching the video, I'm impressed with not only your knowledge and experience in drones but the editing and production. You put the film (yes, it deserves the word "film" vs "just a video") together very well. Amazing work and glad you got the drone back!
So the mini has the potential to be a pretty tough little bird! The way you told the story, I’d have almost thought that as you looked wistfully at the sky, the drone came back, flying playfully about, as heartwarming symphonic music begins to play, you dancing in circles, the camera pulling back, and credits begin to roll up! Good job.
Same here man. Lost mine for 6 months in a river. Someone found it and returned it to me recently. The mini recorded under water for 15min lol. Video on my channel if interested.
Thanks for the great video. I paid attention to your mistakes and warnings. Still, I flew mine right into a tree in Golden Gate Park. It’s lodged about 40 feet up. I’m hoping the wind blows it down soon. I’d like the filter, battery and mem card back.
If this ever happens to any of you, try and lower the drone’s height while you still have a connection, wind speed and gusts are almost always worse the higher it is. If you still can’t fly it back at the lower altitude you might be able to just land it where it is so that you know exactly where to find it and may have the option to choose a spot that is as dry and flat as possible. My first flight on my old Pro Platinum I didn’t realize “multiple flight modes” was turned off in the settings(or even an option on the drone). I had it up in the air and realized it was being pushed away so flicked it to sport mode when it told me on screen multiple flight modes not possible and stayed it P mode. Well that freaked me out, but I somehow managed to remember to lower my altitude and I thought if I had to I could just land it on a sidewalk or someone’s lawn. Fortunately at the lower altitude after a few min here was a brief period where the gusts had died down for a bit and I was able to fly it back to me. Glad I’m this video he was able to find his drone back :) great video btw. Hope this helps anyone who may encounter this.
FWIW, for the CSC to kill the motors in mid air in normal flight I think you will find you have to switch the emergency action response to "Anytime", in "emergency only" they will not stop in mid air though the drone will of course descend.
Never had a problem with wind. I’ve flown in 19mph winds just to experiment locally but I don’t risk it normally and make sure the direction the wind is blowing is back towards home.
Glad you got it back. Mine was lost for 6 months in a river and was recently returned to me. The drone actually recorded 15min under water! Video on my channel if interested in the story.
Always check the weather before you fly and it's worth checking again once you're on location. The Mini is light and a breeze can blow you off course. I use an app called UAV Forecast and it's never let me down. I set my app for max wind/gust of 22mph even though the unit can fly faster. Why risk it?
May not just be the wind the down word censers can get confused flying over tree's, Also the 2.4GHZ setting on WIFI can be very glitchy if theres other wifi around.
All skilled drone pilots around there on RUclips give same advice. Strong wind = get down and use sport mode to fly back home ASAP + use UAV forecast before flying.

This is thee most dramatic drone video ever... Love it tho you’re a good story teller !
nah have u seen the one where casey neistat rescues his drone off a roof that one's crazy.

My thoughts exactly 🤣

Great video man. Held my attention right to the end. Really pleased for you too that you got your precious footage back mate. Good work.

Amen to that the young fellow has skills, anyone that can keep me watching till the end has to be great.
Lol he made me emotional for a while with that voice and then skillshare😁😁😁
Right??? That was the slickest narrative transition to a sponsor I’ve seen on RUclips
Screw the drone. Did I just watch a freakin high production documentary? This is mad skill!
This is a great video and a cautionary tale to respect the warnings and save yourself some grief!! Thanks for sharing your story!!
Enjoyed this video a lot, Alex! Despite all the stuff that happened you’ve arguably got a better video out of it than you could have expected!
Absolutely! Worth it in the end 😅
Damn. This shows just how much dji genuinely cares about the production of their drones and their customers.
?? Caring?? .. would be a drone that doesn't randomly fly off and crash.

Good job.
Great report. This guy is right. Take attention to the wind warning ! You better do. Greetings from Indonesia and windy Bali
I lost my mini for twelve weeks mate, finally I got it back, working fine. But I still sent it to maintenance
Same here man. Lost mine for 6 months in a river. Someone found it and returned it to me recently. The mini recorded under water for 15min lol. Video on my channel if interested.
Nice vid! Thanks for the tips, very helpful.
Did it not try to rth on signal loss? Or will that not work in sport mode?
Glad you got it back
You can salvage a lot of electronics by just cleaning it and letting it dry out. This was a nice story. Congratulations from Arizona.
A cinematical masterpiece, and also a great lesson 😝🙈!
Thanks for sharing your experience. Great video.
Next time try using a tool like UAV forecast. You can set parameters for your specific drone and see what wind speeds are at different altitudes
You are a great story-teller. I got a little bit teared up when the drone is able to fly again.
Once one gets past the dramatic music and shoehorned ad, it's actually a good vid. Thank you - I'm seriously considering one of these...
Excellent video production. Extremely professional. Big like 😎 👍
One of the reasons I got Air 2. I still have Mini and fly with it, absolutely great little drone, but being that small it struggles with wind.
Nice story narration, Your voice is really good😀
So glad you got it back!
great story. glad you got it back and got it to work again. thumps up!
