Oh ✨it's ON like the RenaisAN-ce for realz!!✨ Hear da Vinci destroy the "Plants, Tho" argument of old, be astounded with the contributions of Francis Bacon, meet the Trolls of the Renaissance, come face to face with the Catholic priest who dared to say "turd," and *finally* a woman joins the History of Veganism! That and more! Please share this around to spread the love of history! For citations and more, see: www.BiteSizeVegan.com/RenaissanceVeganism
+Bite Size Vegan very informative video. maybe you could right a book on vegan history? of course it should be enhanced with many more sources and details.
Fabulous!! What a production... this whole series is just fascinating. It's so interesting to see vegans facing the same pathetic arguments throughout history - nothing has really changed! And they even had trolls >_< Thank you so much for your efforts Emily - we can't begin to imagine how difficult these videos are to make, please know you are so appreciated!! Now have a good night sleep ;) xx
You should try to turn this series into a book when you're done with it. Some publisher might be interested, and would also provide help with finishing a book in the form of editing.
This is really good. It actually makes me feel better knowing that there were actually a lot more people in history against the killing of animals than I ever guessed. I feel like I've been lied to about history because this stuff is not mainstream and certainly not in school history books. Usually history books contain nothing but information of who killed who and that's why it was always my most hated subject.
There are no words to express my admiration for you. I already translated the vegans in antiquity video to my language, I have a lot if things to do, let's get to work!
It took me three days to finally finish watching this third installment in your series. After numerous annoying interruptions I got through the entirety. Once again you've created an exhaustive and exacting mini-documentary, the quality of which is more than just noteworthy, it is outstanding. If I were wealthy, which I'm not, I'd fund your efforts well into the future. However, I can offer a suggestion which may help you fund your future work. If you've not already done so perhaps you could look into setting up a non-profit charitable educational corporation. This would allow you to accept tax deductible donations. Your work is so good it needs to find a stable reliable platform. Vegan education is critically important, today more than ever. The broad sweep of connections between our vegan lifestyles and the many social, environmental and even economic issues is vast and has an international scope. You have clearly demonstrated consistently that you have the talent and drive to make these issues visible in a manner which is non-threatening. This ability is, of and by itself uniquely suited to make those very necessary connections clear enough for everyone to see and understand. If then such understanding stimulates empathy, and then action, much can be accomplished. However, as noted before, to accomplish any of that requires more than just a good heart, dedication and tireless effort. It would require practical realistic support, and perhaps the assistance of others with a like mind.
According to what I have recently read: in his youth, Leonardo Da Vinci was a big buffed out guy. He probably worked as a male model for other artists, because of his great physique. He was also know for strong man stunts.
As an SCA/Renaissance fencer and a vegan, I found this crazy interesting. I've always wondered a lot about vegans back then but I never did much research. Thank you so much for all this info, I've got a lot to read/think about. You're great at what you do! When this series is done, you'll have done so much research that it oughta be a book.
"People must have renounced, it seems to me, all natural intelligence to dare to advance that animals are but animated machines. ...It appears to me, besides, that [such people] can never have observed with attention the character of animals, not to have distinguished among them the different voices of need, of suffering, of joy, of pain, of love, of anger, and of all their affections. It would be very strange that they should express so well what they could not feel." Voltaire, Treatise on Tolerance
This one had to be my favorite. Loved the short and to-the-point John Ray quote, although the others were absolutely fantastic too. Don't get me wrong, the other two vids are amazing as well but the Renaissance period has always been of interest to me so I particularly enjoyed this one. Thanks again for the long hours and effort, Emily. Trust me, we appreciate it. Make sure to get plenty of shut-eye though :).
+Cristina Basile oh so glad you enjoyed it! and very glad to hear it's appreciated. I've yet to get the shut-eye...running behind on this week's videos now..maybe next weekend :P
Thank god for Bacon right?? Nah, I just wanted to say that because I'm usually on the opposite side. I was really looking forward to this video and I must say you definitely did not disappoint! I was so exited to learn Da Vinici was a vegan! As always, thank you so much for making these video's! Xx
This whole series is astounding and fascinating! Thank you for enlightening the world with your videos and your diligent efforts. Keep spreading those vegan nuggets
Thank you so much Emily!! This really has amazing info and I really appreciate your immense dedication to this video series!! P.S. you're super awesome and inspirational and I love all you spunkiness and humor! :) You're amazing, you inspire me, and your dedication to animals has made a real difference in my life. Keep doing *You*! :D
OK ill admit it. I saw this was 30 minutes long and thought to myself there is no way im sitting through this. But shes so damn cute I watched the whole thing and actually learned something. Good job.
I wonder why its is that a girl is judged by her looks rather than the hours of work she puts into this and how much she brings to the table. She's lovely, but what I wouldn't give to to hug that brain!
Cosmic Nonsense , she can and will be judged by both. We're all human. There are plenty of women who watch guys because they're attractive or because they have attractive accents. Some things are more one sided but I feel like this is more of an equal thing. You can't tell me a hot, vegan guy with a British accent with the same content as an ugly, vegan guy with an American accent wouldn't get substantially more views by vegan, American women (and men).
WOW that was an excellent video!! Roger Crab 1621-1680 has influenced my life a lot. Not only because he was a plant based eater, but because he also shunned materialism and was a Christian hermit. As well as a wild food forager and a pacifist as am I. The fact he lived to be 59 in the 1600's speaks volumes. Something that intrigues me is someone who is going to be put to death here in the states isn't allowed to do so by being put to sleep for surgery and his/her organs harvested for donation. And Hippocrates noted that food is our medicine and medicine our food and that one should do no harm to a patient, yet what about animals who are patients per se in testing labs?
That was every bit as amazing as the trailer made it sound! You talked about a lot of people who are frequently mentioned for all sorts of achievements, however I didn't have any idea that many of them were vegetarian/vegan! It's truly admirable how much effort and research goes into your videos, I don't think I've seen anything like them on youtube so far. Now please get some sleep, according to the numbers you mentioned at the end your sleep across the past 5 days amounted to about 4 hours a night plus an all-nighter, and that's without any food or fresh air breaks!
+Tefans97 wow so glad it lived up to the hype i made :P And isn't it interesting how vegan inclinations are left out of mainstream history? And I hope to rest soon (as I always do!) but there's so much work yet to be done :) and so many emails! :P many thanks :)
Bravo Emily! A well assembled collection of facts. Delivered in your unique style that brings pleasure to thousands! Echo all of the other comments below, thank you for the work and the time and the lost sleep you put into these videos. 👏👊
wonderful work! i loved this one! amazing how so many of those renaissance people were touching on issues and ideas we are still discussing and struggling with.
your videos are so informational and really helped me understand a more ethical side of being vegan, rather than just the health benefits. thank you so much! you make everything so much easier to understand!
The use of the term "meat" does not apply only to animal foods, that usage is relatively recent. Prior to the 19th century discovery of protein, people did not make a radical distinction between plant and animal foods in terms of their nutritional value. Growing up, it wasn't unheard of to call the flesh of nuts "meat" in some contexts.
Thanks, Emily, for your research and making of the video. Somehow it feels good to me to know that centuries ago there already was a lot of awareness about the cruelty mankind did to animals.
Abul 'Ala Al-Ma'arri was a badass. That's to these videos, I now own all of his poems in Arabic and English. He's just awesome. Although he was indeed vegan, he may have used a camel to camp in the desert, which he loved doing. And for a guy who isn't Muslim, he sure does mention God a lot.
+InformantⓋ If you're fond if Arab writers might I also recommend Ibn Battuta? Esteemed explorer and traveller of his time, with a higher milage than Marco Polo.
I really appreciate all the time you put into producing this video! :) I learned a lot of things I didn't know before! I'm looking forward to the next video of this ongoing series!
Awesome....Connecting to our vegan roots is a great booster... Based on what you said, it seems like Leo da Vinci is a great inspiration for all vegan activists and I will definitely use him for strength when speaking out is difficult. Thanks for making this. I know you're still young but you should get an early lifetime achievement award for sure. Much Love OMOM
+Bill Steinbuechler he really is :) And wow thanks so much! Not sure they give awards for lifetime achievements on RUclips....ha! Personally I think there's much promise in this platform :)
+Bite Size Vegan I know you only do it for the animals and nothing else, but you should still receive some praise every now and then because you do an amazing job and deserve to feel good about your amazing contribution to this movement. Keep up the great work. The momentum is building. I just know it. : )
It may have been said before in the comments, but the word meat used to refer to all food. Not solely animal flesh. Love these videos. This topic seems to have been overlooked so I'm grateful for your efforts

Excellent series Emily. Learned so much. I use your series to debunk a claim that veganism was something new that had just appeared recently. Very recently. Hope you are doing well.
Professor Emily...simply: Thank you. 26:23 is especially great. That Bacon guy though and his support of vivisection...ugh. We have his "descendants" still today, vegans who believe in and cite animal studies and who praise vaccines. And old René D. deserved unspeakable things for what he helped foster in humanity. That goes for Galen, Harvey, Bernard, et al, all the way to the white-coated narcissadists* of today. (*That was fact, not typo.) And how the public loves to be "informed" by such people and hate those of us who, "want people to die rather than have animals sacrificed to save us." While the only thing sacrificed is our humanity. It's a self-induced disorder of the mind which serves as the polar opposite of saving us. Great job, again, thank you. PS: Hah! 27:55 😂
+Bite sized Vegan You are so cute and intelligent. A real credit to the Vegan lifestyle. You are the ying of Vegan Gains yang. More subtle and classy. The pen is truly mightier than the sword.
I had to do a presentation on Vivisection and dissection in Ancient medicine last week and it was such a struggle to learn about Galen and all the other guys that used to cut up live animals for 'entertainment' ugh seriously a tough subject to learn about.
I aways luv your stuff! Thanks for all this research along with humor. So many similar things that the World Peace Diet by Will Tuttle talks about--that people are more violent towards people when they kill animals.

Great job on these videos, Emily!
looking forward to a spotlight on the aboriginals vegan history!
I appreciate so much that you have put these out here for the world!

Thumbs up for Emily's Spanish pronountiation! You did great, girl :D And thank you very much for this series.

wow, Emily you did such a great job, thank you for being such a great asset to ethical veganism
I wish you were still around because I love the history of veganism videos and your my favorite RUclips vegan activist.
The writers of the Renaissance were so eloquent with their words.
4113n I wish to write as they did....
It would be very strange that they should express so well what they could not feel."

love your subtle sense of humor and your glaring intelligence :-)

I must admit it was a while ago i watched your videos, you have gotten so much buffer, great series, the one about da vinci was great :)
Awesome....Connecting to our vegan roots is a great booster... Based on what you said, it seems like Leo da Vinci is a great inspiration for all vegan activists and I will definitely use him for strength when speaking out is difficult. Thanks for making this. +Bill Steinbuechler well thank you :) it certainly boosts my sleep-deprived spirits :)
IM SO EXCITED FOR THIS VIDEO HAVEN”T EVEN WATCHED IT YET
It may have been said before in the comments, but the word meat used to refer to all food. Not solely animal flesh. Love these videos. This topic seems to have been overlooked so I'm grateful for your efforts
just a side note, life expectancy stats were not very reliable (according to most of my history professors anyway) because they include people who died and infancy and childhood, and even childbirth. typically if you made it to 20-25 you'd probably live a pretty long life, maybe 60-70. still, 80 is impressive.
This series are awesome! Have you thought about developing them into a book? It would be amazing if there was a book on history of veganism. Also, a video about the feminist history of veganism will be especially interesting to watch.
+Anna Litkovska i have thought about it. Would have to find the time!
Bravo, Emily, that was an epic. Great job! I can't believe you do it all yourself.
+Kas Sommers ;D thank you! it's rather intense.
Amazing presentation! You speak so clearly and nicely, it's even great for language practice.
Excellent series Emily. Learned so much. I use your series to debunk a claim that veganism was something new that had just appeared recently. Very recently. Hope you are doing well.
Fantastic, Emily! Scholarly and thorough, and very aesthetically pleasing. Now go get some shuteye : )
When you're done you should make a full film!!

Amazing work Emily! Loved this video :)

So even one of the most intelligent men of all time had to point out that plants are not the same as animals or humans, what a stupid world eh ?
+Ceeckoful indeed.

That will be taught at schools in the future!
great info. love your work. cheers

Are you going to continue this series?
Awesome kiddo! I will watch everything you do!
