      The church at that time was less than willing to accept science that was contrary to their beliefs. By what he said, I'd imagine he was talking about the church of that time.

    • @visionplant
      @visionplant 8 лет назад +7

      +wildwestherp s
      Nah, he was talking about the reptilian humanoids that were publicly known at that time.

    • @lightsrallon907
      @lightsrallon907 8 лет назад

      +wildwestherp s In that particular passage he was talking about the reality of slaughterhouses and the unbelievable cruelty that goes on for profit out of the public eye. Have no idea why you'd think a church's views concerning "science" (whatever that means) would have to do with that matter at all.

    • @chapachuu

      +wildwestherp "At that time"? They still aren't willing to accepts facts that contradict their personal beliefs. They just aren't allowed to kill anyone that disagrees with them anymore...at least, not in the Western world.

      yeah he was talking about how those fuckers have us in a trap of time and how they live in another dimension thereby not adhering to these laws of physics and feeding on us... exactly like we feed on our servants, oxen etc, and in a sickening twist: end up becoming addicted to the vile sensations of predation and actually loving and worshipping our oppressor and the awful way of life they have set for us.

    Thank-you, I had seen the "tombs" quote from the work of fiction and read an essay which explained why it can't be determined whether he was vegan or not for certain, but why it was likely he wasn't. They had receipts from his household account which included a butcher's bills. They used some similar quotes, but said they were referring to someone other than DaVinci. With your more thorough explanation, it seems this other essay has some holes in it. Thanks again.

    Leonardo da Vinci has been a sort of "childhood hero" for me since a very young age. Discussions about history, art, and travel were a mainstay at the dinner table in my family growing up. Da Vinci has commanded my attention and inspiration moreso than any other historical figure, though I have never understood the source of the familiarity with him that I feel. Nevertheless, given his achievements across disciplines and his unyielding observations of life and nature that generated his works, I have looked up to him to emulate that same sort of voracious appetite for knowledge of everything (while acknowledging there are things we will never, ever know).
    Suffice it to say, when I learned that da Vinci was also a vegan (after having been vegan, myself, for over 2 years), I couldn't have a stronger signal that I was going down the correct path for me.
    There aren't a lot of videos I have found talking about this aspect of da Vinci, so I thoroughly enjoyed this. Thank you!

      You took the words out of my mouth. Leonardo Da Vinci is one of my heroes as well. A man whose thinking is way ahead of his time. His quotes here on veganism are the same exact arguments we use nowadays and this was what in 1600s? Such a brilliant human being. Very intriguing, so mysterious and yet so breathtaking.

    About Leonardo Da Vinci : This, or some variation of it, is frequently used as proof that Da Vinci was a vegetarian. The problem is that Leonardo Da Vinci never said these words. An author named Dmitry Sergeyevich Merezhkovsky (Russian, 1865-1941) wrote them for a work of historical fiction titled "The Romance of Leonardo da Vinci." In point of fact, Merezhkovsky didn't even write the words for Leonardo, he put them in the fictitious diary of the real apprentice Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio (ca. 1466-1516) as a quote from Da Vinci.

Ive known a few things about religious veganism and quotes overlooked in the Bible, but really NEVER stumbled on anything else so comprehensive elsewhere online. You should write a book! It would be a wonderful tool for vegans to use in defense of their ethics. Plus its just interesting.

    wtf!? That argument of Da Vinci about the lack of necessity for Plants to feel pain is exactly what I came up with! I'm happy to hear it the first time from someone else :) It's a bit similar to our digestive System. It also just gets its food delivered just like the plants, and thus has no necessity for painreceptors. Truth never changes, no matter who stumbles upon it!

Powerful! He was so spot on. Thanks for creating this excellent video, Emily.

    The quotes are amazing and it has inspired me to learn more about da Vinci's ethics. Yet, I am not sure we can extrapolate his ideas about animal welfare to our concept of veganism-- however revolutionary his attitudes may have been. The technology of his time would have made his own ideal lifestyle, let alone a "vegan" lifestyle, impossible.
    Leonardo da Vinci used tempera paints (made with egg) and his notebooks contain gelatin sized paper. Ink was often made with insects or sea animals, and he would have been using a quill to write. Some of his notebooks include what are thought to be grocery lists, which include beef, eggs, "meat", buttermilk. In The Last Supper, he painted a dish of fried eel and a large platter of fish. The only alternative to beeswax candles in his time were tallow (animal fat) candles or tallow-dipped rushes, though tallow smoked and gave off poor light. Leonardo would very likely have been using beeswax candles when he could afford them. His sculpture, "Horse and Rider" was made of beeswax. His paint brushes would have been made with animal hair or fur or a combination. Sable has long been considered the best material for paint brushes (nail salons still use sable for their nail art brushes). His machines (wood or metal) would have been greased with animal fat and the fabrics made water and wind resistant with wax or animal fat. The cannons and gun innovations would have used gunpowder which required saltpeter which was made from rat urine or bat guano. Even the plants he ate would have been the product of the animals he witnessed suffering in the fields.
    This isn't to say that he didn't feel strongly about the suffering of animals-- it is just to point out that there were incredible technological restrictions to being "vegan" in history. For a person in the Renaissance to live as a vegan would require them to be illiterate, to create nothing, to remove themselves from commerce, known methods of agriculture, food culture, medicine, technology. It might be better to refrain from calling him (or any pre-industrial person) vegan and instead focus on his philosophy and how technological advancement has made true ethical veganism possible since the 20th century.

    request: could you do a video on one of the papers in here: Oxford Handbook in Animal Ethics? Haven't gotten around to reading it, but looks juicy. Great video as always! ------- practical question - when it comes to mosquitos, how do you peacefully remove them from the house? Thanks!

    I’ve always admired him and agree with most of his comments. In some locales people will always eat meat though. Unsure it will ever change for everyone.

    Most people knew the word vegetarian not vegan until recently. The word vegan would logically therefore have not be used. Percy Bysshe Shelley was prominently vegan but most people just called him vegetarian simply because people used vegetarian. He called himself a follower of a Pythagorean diet. Pythagorean diet was the term for vegan.

    Hats off for this new amazing video, Emily.
    Giving it a second thought, it seems obvious Leornardo Da Vinci could not be anything but vegan to be such a mastermind in all fields of art and knowledge and living that old for his time.

      +Urasoul well thanks :) And the initial swipe at da Vinci wasn't too concise as it's in the 30 min long Renaissance episode of the history series :) That's why I thought these spotlights would be awesome :)

    At one of my training schools, I was the only vegan. ...so everyone of course knew who I was. I had one female ask me how I was in such good shape etc. I said my diet and my dedication and discipline to a fit lifestyle (daily running, lifting, CrossFit etc). She of course brought up that plants feel pain. Seriously. You want my advice but want to argue against my advice.

  • @cco450

    To say he was Vegan is a bit of a stretch though no? He used egg tempera amongst other animal byproducts for paintings/inventions. Even in modern times everyone is using animal byproducts (vegans too). I think veganism is more about where we are headed than where we have been...

    This is a great video, Emily! Love da Vinci! Wondering what you think about the possibility of creating a History of Veganism Spotlight covering the historical evidence that Jesus didn't eat animals - that he and his brother James were, in fact, raised vegetarian from birth? That would be the best video ever for this series! Of course, that wouldn't ruffle any feathers at all - LOL! Just a thought. :)
