In clothing. One word:LAYERS. And I'm not talking about having 2 thick jackets. But the vest is to have bottom layer as 100% wool. Then thick winter pants. For upper body 100% wool shirt, then some sweatshirt and thick winter jacket. Some scarf and beanie. And of course gloves. But seen many tourists having so much clothes that they can't move.
I skiied (how do you write it.. 😅) a lot when I was young. Mostly downhill skiing, though. We ski cross country skiing etc in school sports classes when young. Also ice scating in winter in schools are normal.
8:15 Ice grow first in early winter. At then it`s extremely firm (steel ice), but later in winter it come brittle by sun, especially in shores. If you see fresh walking marks in snow, it´s safe for you.
Never heard someone say that you need to avoid using water based skin products, like who would even put a cream in their face before going out? Ain't that something you use like after the shower... this is what you get when you put stuff in your face that shouldn't be there... Why not put some vicks cream under the arms too to make it really fresh...
if you ever try as a foreigner downhill skiing i would recomed some sort of teacher and it's better to fall over than let it accelerate beyond conrol, you can break your bones if unlucky.
You have to preheat your car during the winter, so heating cable is also necessary accessory in your car.

why would the schools stop because of some temperature? they have heating right?

Downhill skiing is pretty common in the world, like our bumps does not even compare to their mountains.
Why would schools and jobs stop even with -35c just put more clothes on.
Normally they have issues with the heating systems breaking or kids getting in accidents due to the snow so they normally cancel school
