Man, I gotta say.. im a huge fan of people like Mark Smith, or Morten Hilmer. And after sitting here and watching your videos and then checking out your portfolio, you are incredible and deserve just as much recognition man. This bobcat photo is stunning, and the bear photos you have in your portfolio the two where they're dead center in the frame with either atmosphere from the trees or the birds in the sky, just unbelievable work and great moments. Definitely earned yourself a forever subscriber for me and inspired me a lot. Great great job, Neil.
Saw this because it was posted by Carole Baskin of Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, FL. I've learned to love bobcats through their bobcat rehab program, and watching them via the Explore.org cams in the rehab enclosures. Thank you for these wonderful images and congratulations on capturing these amazing shots of my favorite cat! Those three beautiful shots gave me goosebumps!
Congrats! Man all the images came out nice but that last image...absolutely amazing! It reminds me of the old hunting/outdoor paintings you would see in magazines and advertisements. Definitely a lifer image!! Congrats again!!
My heart was breaking with you! The ups and downs both move me to tears😂. Your passion is palpable. Beautiful work. The lighting on his face in second shot is breathtaking. Great reminder for shooting RAW!! Keep snappin!
THESE PHOTOS are amazing my friend! it was so emotional watching and looking at these 3 photos of this bobcat. But I knew that you always shoot in raw and when I saw the photos on the back of the camera I didn't for one min think you couldn't fix the photos? heck no. Man, ive only been shooting wildlife 3 years now and im STILL trying to find my style. Its aggravating but seeing these photos man, it was very expiring. thank you!!
The last image of the bobcat is my favorite. Omg that is so good. I dont understand the whole raw thing. I just set it to take a picture. So i would buy another camera and have a daytime photo setup and a night time setup. Im gonna try to get the bobcat in our neighborhood.
Excellent job. I really enjoy watching your videos. I have also tried to do something like that, but with badgers. I'm still learning. Thanks A hug from Portugal
Incredible shots!!!!!, you have inspired me to try this elusive imagery, it’s pretty addictive, cell linked trail cams, leaving camera equipment in the woods, horrid beginner images, this has got to be one of the hardest things to get right, but following you has proven to me how much positive progress can be made, and if I ever get an image close to these Bobcat images I’m not even sure how I will react. Incredible, simply incredible!
Congrats Niel! I love your emotions capturing the moment. You have an eye for composure and super cool photo with the cat's reflection! I know your feeling of elation and felt the same way yesterday when I captured my first trail cam video of a day-time mountain lion. Your prior camera trap tutorials are awesome and truly inspired me. Currently I'm setting-up a DSLR camera trap. We have a lot of bobcat in central California with occasional mountain lions. Great work!
I'm eagerly waiting for the video regarding settings with camera traps and lighting. I hope to put out my dslr camera trap as soon as i learn the setting. By the way, i'm using versa laser break trigger as i could not get the camptraption :(
Hi man! You are very good at what you are doing, keep it up. One question, what lens should I buy for nature photography (birds and other animals) I don’t have much money, I mostly want a budget lens
I was shooting in manual mode. I will say I misspoke, I said I was try to capture stars, when that was another trap I was working on at the same time. But I choose a slower shutter speed of 1/60 to capture some more ambient light in-case of a early or late shot. But with the combination of 1/60 shutter speed and other settings, along with flash settings it caused the overexposure. I will be making a video soon regarding settings with camera traps and lighting. Thank you and thanks for watching!
@@NeilJernigan I'm interested in starting a dslr camera trap. what is your opinion on using wireless flash trigger ? What camera mode shlould i use as i'm a beginner ?
Camtraptions has the best wireless flash trigger system! I would start in manual mode. 1/200th @ 5.6 ISO up to 800 is a good starting range for most night time situations. If you use aperture prio. be sure to set your max shutter speed to 1/200 so you don't over power the flashes.
I also think...all your trap images are great. These, however, do not have the look that a flash was used. It has a moody, natural light feel. Love them and that look.
Your patience and persistence have paid off with some amazing photos. I expect that this series of shots will validate on the work you are doing and I look forward to seeing them in the Wildlife of North Carolina Magazine. Yeah. We can question any wildlife photographer on ethics, none of us are perfect. The cat was briefly startled by the sound of the shutter then he looked at the flash. But just as quickly as it was startled, he moved along un-scathed. At the end of the video you can see a trail cam video I captured of him just a little further down the same trail and he was back to normal. Other trail cam videos show a bobcat walking across the dam not bothered by the flashes or sound of the shutter. Now, if what I was doing something that was causing serious harm or could cause major impacts. I would simply either not do it or stop all together. No photo is worth causing an animal to loose it life or cause serious harm. Thanks for watching and bringing up the topic. I may create a video on this very subject in the future. :)
@@NeilJernigan thanks for taking the time to respond. It was not meant to be anything more than a point of discussion. I think all Photogs should take the time to think about their interactions with their subjects being animal/human/nature/

Are you asking for camera trapping or in general?
@@NeilJernigan Hi, I want a Lens for my Crop-frame dslr ( Canon 800D )

True! It has giving me an idea on how to replicate in the future! It helps when the animal arrives when their is still daylight
Congratulations! If you get better than that, I would love to see it! Maybe you can get a kitten.

great shots, BUT i wonder about the ethics of flash photography, . The animal was clearly startled
