Great video! Please consider using rechargable batteries like eneloop Pro or even amazon basics high capacity. I use these for underwater photography and they're great. As wildlife photographers it'd be great for us to try and do our part, however little it may seem.
I have been waiting for you to put this video out it was very good looking forward to the next one I'm in NC too would love to come see you some time keep on shooting
Great video wjoch helps me to build me own DSLR camera trap with the same equipment (eos 550. camtraption, 2 x sb-28) + neewer CT-16 wireless which you us. But I have a "setup"?? problem. The SB-28 don't flash at the first picture if he is in standby mode. It takes up to 2 seconds. Perhaps you have a quick tip for me to fix this issue. Keep going with your camera trap videos. You are interesting and helpful.
Interesting. Try a new set of batteries. Also try a weaker flash setting. If the flash power is really high it will take it a moment or two before it charges up. Try 1/8th or 1/16th power. See if that works. Thanks!!
Hi Neil! Great explanation! I have been doing some camera trap photography for some time and I am thinking about investing on a new camera housing. I can´t find anywhere the specs for the camtraptions housing can you tell me the dimensions of the housing and the dimensions of the front glass? Is it ok to use with wide angle lenses? Thank you and keep up the good work
So as far as the batteries, the colder the ambient temp the quicker they will die. The sensor, the hotter the temperature the more likely you will get false triggers. Example, I placed a sensor in open area in the woods. As the sun & temp rose, the trigger would fire the camera if it detected any movement, whether it was an animal or a leaf.
Neil Jernigan Great! Thanks so much, any suggestions on how to cope with this problem, is it just to turn down sensitivity and have it placed up and over a trail to prevent triggers from leaves?
Great video what a great set up u have there , just one question , can u tell me when the camera is in sleep mode and the animal triggers the sensor , does the camera wake up quick enough to get the shot , with say just one passing of the animal through the sensor . Love your video
great thanks! and were do you carry the housing? To download the trail camera photos, I use my samsung phone, and I have a 512 gb sd to increase the storage capacity. Then with a 3.0 usb-C sd card reader I empty the trail camera SD on to the phone's. I dont like carring my laptop in nature
I carry the housing into the woods with my hands or rig a strap around my back pack. I use to bring in my laptop but now I have enough memory cards so I just swap out the cards.
Great walkthrough! I have a similar setup, so very intersting to see how you have it set up. Have you concidered powering the flashes and triggers with D cell batteries? I went ahead and modified my flashes to be powered with 4 x D cell, and Camtraptions have pre-made battery holders for the triggers. Looking forward to the next video!
Wow! I thought I had a fair bit of gear but you need a packhorse for that lot. 😊 Lots of great info Neil. I have been thinking of a longer lens myself as some of the foxes around here are super wary. I look forward to the next one. Keep up the good work. 👍
oooooh I see now how you get those amazing trail cam photos lol I thought you were just using reg ole trail cameras lol. Well, either way. beautiful work my friend. keep the videos coming, sir.
Lots of great info, looking forward to getting started! You may have mentioned it but I didn’t catch it, do you use camtraptions triggers and receivers on your flashes?
Hey mate, great video. The camtraptions housing, what is the mount underneath that it has? I’m looking at buying this as a weather proof box for long term Timelapse, for construction etc. just wondering what the mount is as I’d need to be able to connect it to some sort of clamp on buildings, posts, trees etc. thanks in advance!
mirrorless cameras are not silent at all. You need to use mechanical shutter if you want to use flash, so it makes some noise. But true, it is quieter than dslr. Canon R and RP are very good in power consumtion. If you turn camera in sleep mode they can stand by for weeks. If not, use dummy batteries and some D-cells/R20. I love camtraptions sensors and nikond SB flashes :) One picture per year, 24kg on back for one cameratrap. You need to have strong back and legs if you want to be photographer :P Good luck bro.
Neil, congrats on a great video. I've dabbled with camera traps where I live here in Costa Rica but am getting into it more heavily now. I'm finding it hard to get the Nikon SB-28 flashes. Do you happen to know if Nikon SB-26 and Nikon SB-25 will have a similarly fast wakeup time? Thanks, Greg Basco
Thank you! They are getting very popular in the camera trap community. I’m not sure on the 26 or 25 I’ve personally never used them. They do make a SB28 DX that works just as good as the standard 28.
@@deepgreenphotography hey! I don't know if you'll see this, but I want to buy a couple of flashes for my camera trap, and because the sb28 are difficult to find under the 100€, I was wondering if you have tested out some other flashes in the past year? (sorry for my English, I'm French so it's not perfect...)
Nice video, however I do not understand why people use Camtraptions gear when Cognisys produces far, far better equipment? There are at least 30 wildlife photographers who have moved from Camtraptions to Cognisys, and none the other way. Just a heads up for those thinking about buying stuff...
Thanks! .. That's why I recently purchased a SCOUT, wanting to test it out. One of the main reasons I started with camtraptions was the price point. Just easier to spend $200 on a sensor than over $400. Especially when I have 3 to 4 traps needing sensors. But I am excited to try out the Cognisys, they seem to be a great product! I love the idea of their flashes! Definitely has me thinking! Which of their products do you use?
@@NeilJernigan Hi Neil - I am fortunate enough to use most of their gear for various projects and documentaries. I do both stills and video. Yes, it is expensive, and I completely understand the price point of the Camtraptions gear being attractive. As I say to most of the folks I teach - it is like a cheap tripod. Everyone buys one, then buys a better tripod when they realize it doesn't quite do the job. The Scout is great - very flexible with timing windows, and works over a very long range. The Cognisys PIRs can also be 'time windowed' via the app I have on my laptop (which I take everywhere when I am checking traps). I modify them a little to have a snoot, and I love them. Can't go wrong with 2-3 months of operation with two AA batteries... Then, when funds grow, you can use both the Scout and PIRs in a completely wireless setup with the Cognisys Controller, which you program from your phone. It really is incredible. I use a mix of Cognisys LEDs for video, Cognisys flashes in secure environments for stills, and SB28's where things are a little less secure. The Cognisys flashes are truly incredible. Can use the Canon wireless protocol (or Cognisys) - are brighter than SB28's and faster to recycle. Plus, I have shot over 2700 images at half power on a single charge over 2 months!!! Feel free to check some of my work at humanstohummingbirds.com - and keep up the good work!!
Nice video and u have a nice thing going with the channel. 1 Thing i didnt like though is that you drill/screw into trees dont be lazy there is 1000s of ways to mount and not harm nature : )

Which temperature ranges did you find they struggled in? Because I will be setting up traps in Hong Kong where it can get very hot! Great video btw!

I'm interested in the answer to this too as I live in the desert of Southern Utah. 113 degrees today.
also, hos is the batterylife on the wireless recivers/transmitter?
Does the Rebel have a mirror up function? - then it would be no noisier than a mirrorless.

Even with a longer lens you still need the sensor and flashes near the set. Do you guys camouflage your gear?
How do you works the batteries canon life? how any days works in stand-by? thanks!
I turn off all image review and pending on temperature they can last weeks on standby, sleep mode
