i only do film photography so i know a bit of frustration when you don't have the results you were searching for. Failure is part of the experience and what matters is to learn about it and learn. That's amazing to see all the wildlife around your house (not very wild !)

Owing to neighbours who just don’t understand 🤷🏼♂️I had to go to infrared camera trapping, same setup but an older camera converted to ir, interesting results great fun!

Don't give up. I'm being driven crazy by squirrels at the moment. Camera trapping requires lots of patience and persistence, but when you get the shot you envisaged, its such a buzz. Good luck Matt. 👍

Nice one Matt - I'm sure you'll get one of those foxes sooner or later - you do seem to have found a foxy highway there! Great tip on the cheaper case - cheaper even than the lowest used Peli I could dredge up... I'm in the process of building a trap setup for the hedgehogs and occasional fox we get in our garden, so I'll be getting one of those!
Have I missed something here? Where is the bit where how it is connected up and how the camera is set is dealt with? It's a great video and I will be watching others but am looking to build one myself and would like to know how you set the camera to not eat the battery within a few hours? Or maybe it's just me.
Ha, nope, you haven't missed anything. I rarely dive into the technical details but have linked a video in the description that I used to help me with that aspect. Also the book I use in the video is a great resource :). Though the camera is left on, but turns itself off (as with all cameras) after a while and then when triggered it turns on and takes a photo :). Thank you for watching!

We've been wanting to try camera traps for ages but haven't gotten around to it yet (we've always been put off by the costs involved and risks to equipment), but this makes it look completely possible and I think the DIY approach may be the way to go! Hi Matt, great video and at least you got something. I have almost the exact same home made setup as you. The set up works ok but if it is dark they are all underexposed. I have set the camera shutter speed at 250 to sync with the Nikon flash (same as yours), flash to manual, stand by mode, low power 1/64 and zoom around 24mm. Camera is at F8 for some depth of field and ISO 250. No matter what I do they are always black and completely on the left of the histogram, I have tried auto ISO as well but its the same. Not sure what to change now, tried it in the dark and the flash goes off same time as the motion sensor/camera. If you have any suggestions they will be gratefully received! Trying for badger which I have caught several times on the trailcam. Cheers, Dave
Hi Dave, I've spoken to Matt about this, tricky one. It may be a compatibility issue with a Nikon flash and canon camera, it may also be that you need to lower your shutter speed to 1/200, move the flash a touch closer maybe. Hard to tell without seeing the full setup and results in person

Hi Mark, I used the 10-18 efs but I wouldn't recommend it at all. It's better to go for one that you can manual focus (not by wire) like the 17-40 for example. Good luck with the set up and thanks for the positive feedback 😊
So at the end did you managed to shoot that badger ? At the moment I'm trying to shoot a fox ,even though I'm using a cheap trail camera bought off amazon.

I've had access to a patch of land the past few months in the middle of a busy town that's almost certainly got a badger sett and definitely got a fox den in with cubs, as well as passing muntjac, I've had my trail cam in various places and know exactly where the animals will be every night, I've got a few daytime pics on my DSLR of the foxes but did not know where to start with a DSLR camera trap but you've given me hope! The only thing you didn't really discuss was the motion sensor?

But I can't check at the moment because I want to keep my sent away from it. But it isn't the best for the job to be honest, I had to wrap tape around it to direct the beem.
Fantastic camera trap box, I never would've thought to use camo tape ! At least not right away. Btw another UK fella Tom Mason does a bit of camera trapping - check out his channel for tips. Morten Hilmer does camera traps occasionally too.

Back in the days of film (I know ... no one cares), you would be able to achieve the same ghosting effect by doubling the shutter speed for a normal exposure, releasing the film, and rewinding it, to then double expose the same section of film. So you could have a see through person pretending you had photographed a ghost. That can't happen with your set-up. So the ghosting is caused by as you worked out, too slow a shutterspeed. Long enough to register the animal before it runs like hell. But not enough for a shot like your mates. Boost up the flash and use a faster shutterspeed. You'd have to fiddle with the white ballance setting too. If I were doing that I'd also use objects to funnel the animals into the cameras field of view passively. For example propped up old wardrobe doors. Just out of shot. And try different angles to try and get profile shots. But seriously that fox footage was just brilliant. They all look so healthy. Even tripod. So so cute. Great tutorial Matt and I'm really looking forward to seeing what you catch. But also this has so many opertunities to leave it in other locations. Wild boar, deer and maybe wild cats. Thank you for sharing.
