I do feel that buying any newish bike is basically a write-off of at least a third of the initial purchase price. I like to think that the cost of a 2 week family holiday is about what I lose at the next trade in and it doesn't feel so outrageous. Very much enjoying your content thank you.
I know what you mean, maybe about 12 months old is the way to go to try and avoid that initial loss from new
After riding used bikes for the last 20 years I went and bought a brand-new Supper meteor 650. This way I know how the bike is supposed to feel. I know their is a loss but frankly I plan on keeping this bike for 20 years.
@@joshuathomas8529 and how do you like the RE?
But you're not paying for the whole bike on PCP, that's the way to go, especially if you don't plan on keeping the same bike for a decade.
@@flippy66 what’s the mileage cap on these deals though?
I'm in the market for a bike in the £4-7k range (buying outright with cash) and tbh, the prices people want for used is daft. Yes a lot are immaculate, with very low milage. But why would i pay £5k for a 3 year old used one when i can get brand new for £700 more from a dealer, 100% no risk, no accidents, no need to check it over or HPI it, and no messing with payment options.
We have to agree, here’s a great option for you to consider…ruclips.net/video/-Ls256mHwrA/видео.htmlsi=yZF00GMbp2UV_61d
I’m one of the elusive second hand buyers, searching at the moment. My personal opinion? People want too much for their bikes, simple as that. If they were priced right, they’d sell. Same with houses, they get listed for, let’s say £200k, they don’t sell, they drop the price, they sit for a while, then they go for £170k, the price they should have been listed for in the first place. Almost every bike I look at, I’m thinking, if that was a bit less….just my opinion.
Maybe another sign of the times, people just need to make more money out of stuff because we pay more for everything else
@@ontheroadadventure I agree and that's the conundrum. We need more money when we sell things but we don't have enough to buy things. I've been looking at the 800 Tigers, I'd like to spend around 4k, and I'm looking at 2011, maybe 2012 bikes for that much money. I just don't know if they're worth it.
@@jerhughes500almost 12 years old by then 2012 model. I find used bikes have to be at least 5 years + before the price difference over new is worth it. And when you find a reasonable bike with the stock exhaust, indicators. No tail tidy. Its a good few thousand more than the cheapest ones.
I’m a sucker for the newest models and tech on a bike, I do t have the patience to wait it seems!
@@Paul-pb4wv I think people become attached to their own bikes, you build an emotional bond and that tends to reflect when people value their own bike for sale
One of the problems I've come across looking to buy a cash second hand bike from a private seller is, they want to get top money or above more or less getting back what they paid for it a year or two ago, I have a good look around to see prices of second in dealerships, Auto Trader and compare them to private sellers, you can often get a bike cheaper from a dealer with some warranty, I just keep looking for a bargain bike with all the extra's and a decent price regardless of who's selling it. You have to be prepared to make a loss selling second hand bikes, whether trading in or selling privately, or be stuck with it for a long while.
I Agree, however ours was by far the cheapest available. You have to be realistic if you want to make a sale. People often over value their bikes and want to include the value of extras that they spent, but we all know you never get that money back
I think that during covid all bike prices got inflated new and old. The problem is now that the prices have stayed high, probably due to the fact that people who bought in covid who paid top price still want to get top price back. The other worry when buying used is buying a melon??
That can be a risk, I’ve always been lucky though. Biggest lemon I ever bought was a new KTM!
im still riding my cz175 1975 i brought it new still going strong.
Amazing! That’s getting your moneys worth 👍
I keep my FJR on autotrader for 3 months last winter and price was 3000£, not single call. I take it back to place where i got it and px it for my GS and they pay me 3500£??? They sell it for 4750£ after 2 months??? I don't understand that ...
That is madness!
I'm in my 50s and after many years and many, many dozens of cars and bikes, I will NEVER darken the doorstep of a dealer again. I would rather get a bank loan and buy a nice bike from a private seller if that's the way I wanted to go.. The warranties are not worth the paper they're written on and once you're out the door, they are not really interested in you or the bike. Last week, I picked up a 30 year old VFR750 for a £1000, absolutely lovely thing, even with 67k on the clock. I'll be prepping it over winter and taking it to Europe in spring. I've had fairly new Tracers, Fazers, Tigers, CBF1000 etc etc.. all great machines but too much money tied up in them and too much depreciation for me.. Even my car is 32 years old and guess what..? No engine management light.. ;-)
You are probably the wise one here
I never spend big money on bikes ,so many bargains to grab second hand, glad you got a vfr750, I have one it's a 97 model and love it, just brought something different a 400 burghman in mint condition with low miles and some great extras for £1000, ITS ACE.
I bought a new bike. Then bagged a bank loan with less interest to pay. Paid the finance off. I am looking for another bike tho 2nd hand.
@@stevebee2865 I think it’s a buyers market right now for used bikes so have a good look around and haggle yourself a great deal
I only looks at used private sale bikes (or cars) if they are very very cheap. Seen too many lemons on peoples drives that are just a few hundred quid cheaper than buying from a dealer where you have some consumer rights to protect you. Often private sales are because people think they can charge as much as a dealer would sell the bike for, or the seller knows it’s hiding something…. Happy to buy used bikes, but won’t pay almost new prices for them!
It’s certainly a mine field when buying used vehicles
I'll always buy used and private with certain brands.
I'll always avoid private sales with big brands such as Ducati, BMW, KTM, and Triumph, as if they go wrong, it can be very expensive.
I also feel buying these big expensive bikes for "touring" is pointless.
I have an R1200GSA 2019. It's a good bike, but other than being able to go off road, there's nothing more it can do than my 2015 GSX1250FA, and for that reason, the GSA will be sold in January.
Sometimes keeping it simple is best
I can't work these bike shops out tbh, they are overstocked but you walk in with cash on the hip and they won't budge on silly prices, I've seen bikes sit for months and months unsold, just doesn't make sense.
I bought new once and never will again unless I win the lotto or inherit a fortune somehow!
Finance is a no no for me, I agree with your Mrs on that. Looks a great channel you have, subbed,
Glad you enjoy the content 😃
We think same, sometimes you can get lucky with buying new bike with very few miles on and a lot of extras for considerably less than same but brand new. Eva was lucky like that with her AT
Agree with you ans I still don’t understand why some bike shops rather sit on an overpriced motorcycle for years sometimes and would not negotiate the price, maybe it is so you just buy a new one from the shop?
I have a 1971 Honda cb750/4 Custom hardtail chopper and a 1992 Yamaha xj600 diversion. And im well happy with them both. And they brought and paid for
Both bikes sound cooler than Penguins Pee! Rich loves Chops and custom bikes and also owned the xj600 as his first big bike many years ago. We often think that older and simple is best but also we cannot help but want EVERY bike we see!
It's a buyers market at the moment. Bike shops closing down. Our local one closed middle of this year.
It must be hard to make a decent mark up, enough to make a profit, Everyone wants to sell at the best price and buy the best bargain, Hard to make money in the middle i guess
@@ontheroadadventureLook at WeBuyAnyCar and Cinch...they've 10s of thousands of cars at Rockingham all on axle stands...only a matter of time before they go bust!
You’d think they would sell them off cheap to get rid of stock rather than it rotting
I bought a new bike only because it did not made sense to me to buy a 4 year old bike W/O warranty for only 15% lower price, than a brand new bike. I guess it depends on the market (location), but where I am form the prices of used bikes do not make any sense. You can still see the same bikes on adds from 2, 3 years ago with the same price or even higher price and more mileage. It's ridiculous.
Yes we know what you mean, a local dealer had an Africa Twin for sale used, it had been in the show room for two years and now is 2k over priced. We tried to buy it at 10k its value not once but twice and was declined. Both times both me and ewa returned with our new Africa twins at better value. It’s like they didn’t want to sell us the bike 🤷♂️
It's always been easy to have bikes on finance - it's also the most expensive way to buy anything. I hit seventy years last year and in 50 years of motorcycling have never actually bought a new bike. Bought one or two with just a couple of hundred miles on them but never actually new. I always let someone else take the hit of depreciation - which is always greatest in the first year or so, and wherever possible, buy from private owners rather than a dealer.
I bought two new bikes before coming to this realisation too. Il never buy new again. Also for me I don’t want to be trapped for dealer servicing to save the warranty, I’d rather do it myself
Triumph are a good well known premium brand, costing £10 K and upwards new. It`s reasonable to expect to get say £6 K for a 2 or 3 yr old good example, BUT as you point out that sort of money will buy a new 650 Royal Enfield for example. The market has been distorted against the premium brands by relatively cheap imports from India and China. In addition,as I have said, the rider demographic has changed as well, plus winter is no good for sales and on top of all that there has been massive cost of living increases.Another factor is the proliferation of lower speed limits and enforcement cameras,so the once sought after high performance bike is less desireable. All things considered it`s a crap time for bikers.
This is where the more budget, lower cc brands are excelling
I think the other issues is that pcp is becoming really big. Smallish deposite and have a 20 grand bike and as long as you meet service intervals you have the bike for like 3 to 5 years and either buy it outright or go in for another payment plan on the next new thing. Of course unless you buy it at the end, you never fully own it. However for those who just go out every now and again, the service intervals are rarely over 20 000 miles and I bet very rarely hit major ones like the 30k miles for valve clearances. I would keep it and wait for summer and sell on auto trader or take it to bike night and then put a for sale sign on it
Did you see what happened at the end of the video, we were very fortunate 😊 You are right about the pcp though, this suits most but not us due to the mileage we do each year
@ontheroadadventure I missed that end bit. Great that you sold it :) I am like ypu, I like to put miles on my bikes. Your one looked well looked after and an absolute bargain. I hope the new owner takes good care of it
@@bikingwithgrantygrant779 Yeah I’m a firm believer that if you look after your bike it will look after you, I spend far to much time cleaning them!
I’m in the states,to buy new dealers adding $1500 in fees on average across the board. So, even a small cc bike around $3000 not leaving the showroom until close to $5000. Now used bikes if you can find one not being sold by a dealer are going for almost msrp saying save on fees. No realistic prices anywhere and see a trend where buyers going for bigger bikes instead of a beginner to be only robbed once.
Wow that doesn’t sound good. What do they say the fees are for?
@@ontheroadadventure I’ve seen destination, prep, tax, registration, plates and even a document fee,let alone them trying for an extended warranty.

The cost of living is a big factor. People have money but worry about paying out a lot of money on someting that has no warranty then having no cash if a big bill comes in. Also new bike prices rose steeply and are now falling due to lack of sales but private prices can be ridiculous. In 2015 you could buy a new MT07 for £5700 (£500 less than RRP) a few weeks ago I saw a 2015 MT07 advertised for £5000 lol. You can get the new hornet with all it's rider aids for £89 per month.... those are the main reasons why used bike sales are not doing well.
A fair point I brought in 2017 a brand new tracer 900, in 2020 at £7k I sold It with 30k miles on it for £5k. How much is a new tracer now?!
In 2010 I was run over on the autobahn on my 2007 gsxr1000 I traded it in as a cat N for £3200 on my new 2012 gixxer I saw it advertised for £5999 privately last month 🙂 @@ontheroadadventure also currently you can buy a brand new MT09 on the road (inc road tax) £8560 but there are year old used ones for 8750 privately

We appear to be following each other around, I was in Marsh B for new tyres and a service and first MOT on the AT at Bridge over the weekend. I can't fault either place.
Bridge seemed keen to talk to me about a new Suzuki VStrom and Tiger but hey, I've got an AT why would I switch? Having said that, the newish 2023 AT over the road was tempting but I stopped myself.
Plans for Rome are ongoing, my thoughts are I'll do the tolls heading through France to the Alps then switch to no-toll roads in Italy and on the way back. I picked up quite a few tips from your Rome series.
All the best.
Andy.
Awesome trip, youll love it, but if we were to do it again, we would allow more time and avoid all the toll roads, they really sucked
No. New is not the way to go.
Not because I don't want an new bike but because I don't like all the new rubbish they come with. 6 axis IMU. Switchable riding modes, radar cruise control, active suspension etc. Keep it. I don't want it.
I'm currently in the market for a cbr1100xx, ideally an early carb'd version but I also don't mind a newer one.
By the way, I'm 33. I just don't want all this rubbish. If I wanted my bike to be totally safe and electronically controlled I'd just use my car.
I want to RIDE my bike. Not just sit in it
The beauty of motorcycles is the huge range of bikes available and the fact that we all like different things keeps it interesting. If I could have numerous bikes I’d have an old 1998 Fazer in the garage for similar reasons
This all started with pcp even more so when they started doing pcp on second hand bikes and it killed the second hand market for private sellers , unfortunately life is rentable for the majority of people ☹️
You could well be right there but PCP doesn’t work if you do big miles like us, I saw a deal for 4k miles, I thought that was per month, it was for the whole year lol!
Im in the market for Yamaha tenere, im going to hold out until jan/feb.. not sure whether to buy new as i dont like being charged silly money for a 600 mile service ...

I didn't take the chance trying to sell my 800 Tiger privately when I got my nearly new Tiger 1200 last month as there are so many for sale in the market, plus I got what I wanted for it and a good price on the 1200 (good time to buy). Funnily enough the dealer sold my old 800 45 mins after I'd picked up the 1200. The big plus for me is that the whole procedure was so easy, it just wasn't worth the hassle of going the private sale route.

The average age of the UK motorcyclist is around 54 and rising. This means the follow up of young people wanting to buy cheaper second hand bikes is shrinking. Obviously the net effect is a shrinking market for people wanting a second hand bikes, whilst the number of second hand bikes remaining unsold increases at the same rate. Interestingly this aging biker scenario is also playing out in the U.S.A. Probably why the manufacturers are all bringing modern retro classics out, chasing a shrinking market.
The trouble is that motorcycles are not cheap transport anymore and so are for people who can afford to have it as a toy or hobby. The Chinese brands are bringing out decent bikes at a third of the cost which will help younger people
I keep my motorcycles for decades. I have only 2 on the road 🛣️ at present. My Sportster has 400,000 miles on the original engine. My URAL has 50,000 miles on her. She is a 1999 650 Tourist. Both are fun motorcycles. Especially my Sportster, such a fun bike to ride. So reliable and dependable too.

Stopped taking finance out on bikes 35 years ago when the finance outlasted the bike, never again i said as i was left without a bike for over a year.
Wow how did that happen? What bike was it?
It happens often if you bought 5 years old. By the time you had finished it was 10 years old. Often things didn't last 10 years. Even if it did by the time it was paid off it was time to start looking again. I believe they are doing used bikes on a PCP now. It's a bloody never ending treadmill for people who borrowed to purchase.
They want us on that treadmill so make it really hard to refuse the deals
Depends what you're buying I guess. I bought my Rebel 500 new. The difference between new and 1 year old was less than £1k (£700 in most cases). For that extra, I'm getting newness. If you buy from a dealer you are still paying 20% VAT new or old. Dealer servicing isn't required for warranty work so I can give it a good service every year, even though service intervals are 8000 miles. I was looking at buying an RE Meteor 350 as a 2nd bike but sellers are just being unreasonable in what they want. £3500 for a one year old bike that only costs £4100 new...nonsense. Liking the videos huys!
Rebel 500 made sense to buy new I agree, just hang on for the RE I think used prices will come down soon
Most dealers go down the "second hand margin scheme" in terms of VAT, rather than a straight 20% - at least that is the case for cars.
Could it be that there are no where near the amount of people passing their bike tests because of the stringent rules.
Is that a real issue? It’s been a long time since I did mine but ewa did her licence a little over a year ago and passed it all no trouble?
Perhaps less people are doing full bike tests due to cost of living situation? I guess for most a bike is a toy, to go along with the car so is an extra luxury?
Well my son in law had Africa twin I’ve got a tiger xca and no way would I swop for the Africa twin, seat uncomfortable, didn’t like the engine but there again I was using the tiger on roads only.
We absolutely love our Africa Twins and we find the AT seat way more comfortable than the Tigers. All bikes are different and we all fancy something different every now and then! Tiger does have a nice engine, very different to others
We have not taken the bikes off-roading yet but we pretty sure we will not unless is light off-roading.
Yes we all have our preferences I’m now 77 and had bikes since 1964 so I’m afraid by now I’ve had the whole gamut of bikes from oil dripping brits to a bmw s1000RR all in all 17 bikes, but I find the Tiger strangely after what you said about yours one of the most comfortable but then again I’m slightly built and this will be the last bike I own. Talking of different bikes when I came back from the north as a retired engineer i got into the “I’ve gotta have a bmw gsa 1200 like long way round” well it was certainly the wrong way round for me. I had a ride on a RE Himalayan and I thought that was a great little bike and round a farm track it handled that mud hole track better than my BM tractor 1200.
These small light simple bikes do the job well ad are keeping motorcycling affordable, The new GS for example is only for the Wealthy Middle aged man these days@@john-wq8kf
Iknow Marsh barton well and frequent both dhops mentioned, i will say that both shops usually pay below trade price, but all bike shops work on the parkers price guide, and youd be VERY SURPRISED at how low that price guide is
It must be getting harder for the shops now, they are needing to get better deals themselves now in order to turn a profit
Always the same this time of year. Good time to buy as dealers are quiet and want to move stock to make a few quid
It must be a hard time for them, we were only trying to shift one bike!
Buy used privately is my advice, dealers just rip people off on px and trade ins. You're just funding their car style showrooms and sales people that lie and know fuck all about bikes.
Sadly I have met motorcycle salesman who amaze me when they tell me they don’t actually ride bikes themselves lol
Hi guys, great channel and a really informative video. Good luck with the sale
Thanks so much for joining us on the road 👍
Same here (oz) some selling easy some not. Prices for used as we all know were ridiculous due covid shortages not long ago 👍
And now dealers want to try to maintain those prices!
Following lockdowns people went crazy for bikes cars bicycles and dogs. Now supplies of these are available and people no longer seem desperate to get their hands on them there seems to be an oversupply. My local (100 mile round trip) BMW dealer had a shop full of used bikes, end of lockdown more or less all sold in four or five days. My four year old car, 39k miles sold to a dealer for £300 less than I payed new. Now there’s a fallout with bike and car dealers oversupplied with stock they can’t move, sheds full with bicycles that’ll probably never be used and unfortunately dog shelters filled with unwanted dogs.
Spot on
Very sad but true, so whats to be done with the Stock? i cant see Dealers Lowering the prices, I mean Their businesses cannot take the hit either, particarly the smaller shops
Its interesting to see what will happen over the next few years, will there be a drastic drop in prices?
Every asset will drop in value through 2024. Motorbikes, cars and houses etc. 2025 will see better times once people have got used to the new normal, providing we don't have too much taken off us to pay for green living.

Winter I feel like you see quite a few bikes pop up this time of year, however this is also good because you know come winter you can snag a deal (as they just want rid of the bike so price also goes down) , however you just have the responsibility of cold storing it, but it's still a good deal. And some people ride all year round apart from snow so such a person would even benifit more.
We love to ride all year round, winter is definitely a buyers market for sure
PCP.
Buy a new bike on pcp, for low monthly repayment, have to get it serviced at the dealer, in 3 years give it back, walk away or start another pcp.
No wonder dealers are smiling so much. And make list prices so high its hard to buy them outright. There aren't many incentives to buy outright. Although i do because i kerp them and usually put miles on them.
Good watch
Ride safe and happy travels
Id hate to see what my monthly payments would be on PCP when i tell them i want 25k miles a year included!

Yes, everyone wants the latest bike now and hire them on pcp. What 2 stroke do you have? Like everyone else I love the smell! We used to have a speed way track near me, the smell was amazing!
My experience with a "Full Service History" was that time constrained dealers mechanics had left it needing a lot more attention than someone who owned it and gave a shit.
I would far rather service my own bike always! No one cares about your bike like you do
Hi, I thought that was marsh barton at the beginning.
Totally agree that the used market for bikes over 4-5K and 'common' bikes is stagnant and not moving, and agree that finance seems to be the choice for a lot of people.
Except for unusual/rare(ish) bikes . I use a kmx 125 2T daily and in the 5 years I've had the smoker they have more than doubled in price, and actually selling for 3-4 times what a new one cost in 86
You are lucky with your bike then! Sit on it for as long as you can!

There will be lots of local content on the channel for you then 👍
With so little incentive to buy used, maybe there will be a collapse in used bike prices soon. A bit of a worry for dealers with large stocks.
I think that’s inevitable right now
Dealer has too many overheads to buy a bike at any sort of pallatable price. Trade in might be slightly better. Bottom line with newish S/H bikes is that NO-one has the savings to spend £10k (say) on a bike - but they CAN afford £200/month for a PCP. The sums don't have to stack up - it's the only way they get a bike.
Very sad but true I think
Royal Enfield always look attractive on paper but I've had three & never again.
Problem after problem with them all.
What problems did you have with them? was it himalayans?
It was 500 1:24 Bullets , electrical problems, things dropping off or fracturing , rear disc brake bolts came loose & jammed up the wheel, bolt on the crank end came loose, chain wire out in no time, handle bar mount threads gone, front brake locked solid stuck on first ride.
Could go on & on, each time people say they've improved but i found different.
@@TriumphBeezaman wow, sounds like my KTM 890 experience!
I'm in Australia and own a 2021 Duke 390 . You can buy a brand new 2022 model here for $6,800 Australian dollars. I was offered $3000 for my Duke which was a year and a half years old at the time. Ridiculous. So I would sell my Duke privately for $4.500 Australian dollars because people like you said might as well buy new otherwise. You can't sell for the same price as a dealer because they also offer some sort of warranty.
It is becoming a rock and hard place type situation
Benelli isn't a new brand, the company was originally founded in Pesaro, italy in 1911, I own a 1980 Benelli 900 Sei, one of those rare across the fram six cylinder jobbies. I haven't ridden any of the Benelli's built after the Chnese buyout, I do fancy trying out the Benelli 752 S just to see how it rides.
That is a very fair point! I guess I mean to say they are becoming a main player now alongside some of the larger jap brands in the uk. I am going to make a point of testing some of these bikes myself and will make some review videos on them soon
You've discovered the real appeal of leasing, not only do you get a new example of the latest model, when it's time to change you just hand it back and either walk away or go again.
This only works though if you don’t really ride it. I don’t think they would lease us a bike I’d need about 25k mile a year allowance
Spring is the time for selling used bikes (always go private). People just start thinking about getting back on the road...closest to the start of Summer is the sweet spot. People will pay silly money in that small window.

That when I always sell mine. Get a fresh mot sell at the start of the summer.
@@chrishart8548 I think it could be a wise plan
I think PCP and low APR finance on new bikes doesn't help the 2nd hand market. I sold a Harley to a dealer in March for 9k, I'd advertised it at 10k and not a sniff, dealer had it without the Mustang seat which i sold for £450 so was happy, the dealer had it up at 10.5k, he still has it and now its £9950 plus he drove 300 miles to collect it. Now is the worst time to sell.
I think you did well out of that one, The Dealer could be sat on the bike for a long time!
Good video, please make more..Its interesting and informative, funny.

Depends on thebike, but with some bikes there is barely a drop in price. Like would I want to buy a 21 plate KTM 890 Adventure with 5000 off road miles on it for 9.5k, or buy a brand new, upgraded 23 plate for 11k with 2 years warranty? It's a no brainer!
But then other bikes like their KTM 1290 GT, a 2022 model is unchanged to the 24 model and can be found used for 12-13k, whereas brand new with extras they can kiss the 20k mark.
On that note…. I bought a 890 adventure new for exactly this reason….. By far the worse bike I ever owned! You can see my ownership review on the channel
@@ontheroadadventure I haven't seen your video this just sort of popped up, but based on your videos without going into detail you got the typical unlucky KTM luck of the draw.
KTM's either fail early or they last forever, fortunately with the former you have warranty. I own a 1290 GT and know many people that own KTMs, I have also ridden a variety of KTMs, and there is no question the 890 adventure is hands down the best bike in the class. I've ridden a few and never had any issues, took one for a 1500 miles trip around romania with off roading and it was faultless, and also ridden a 2022 1290 SAS with 43k(!!!!) miles on it, and I could honestly not tell the difference between that and the demo bike i've ridden at the showroom. I suggest you don't put the KTM down for bad luck in terms of ownership, it's one of those where it's easy to get a lemon and it's not what you want out of a new bike, but once the issues are sorted it'll be unbreakable.
My experience was ruthless, severe faults, and a list of problems with the bike within a few days of ownership. I’d never look at another KTM after that I’m afraid.
New on PCP is the way to go. You can get the 1300GS with £3k deposit for £190p/m. And there will definitely be residual in it at the end of the 3 years. The 800GS is a £2K deposit and £90 p/m! It's a no brainer compared to the used prices at the moment unless you want to own the bike outright.
I do agree these are very tempting offers, but i suspect they wouldnt offer that deal to us, whats the mileage cap on a deal like that?
I have a Yamaha virago 750 from 1993 and no dealer would touch it as it’s to old , then I put it on eBay starting bid at £1,600 , when the bid finished 2 people were interested in it, I had to let one person down and the person who wanted it said will you accept £1,700 for it , yes i said only to here they live so fare away from me, then he told me it would cost him £300 to get it home , then asked me to reduce it more, I ended up not selling the bike , but this July I bought a new rebel 500 and love it , so the virago can stay in the shed and I will see what happens in April next year, I haven’t been to Exeter since I was down there on a government training course for the disabled, this was back in 1980 , I have been told where I was training the place has been demolished and houses are there now , sir Douglas bader was the patron saint of st, love’s college , I loved walking along the river x and caching the bus to exmouth .

I think a lot is to do with finance, you can get a lot of ok new bikes like Royal Enfield, BSA and a whole heap of really good Chinese bikes for a pitence on finance and nearly new bikes have loads of electronics that are normally there week spot. I only just past my DAS and i can't get test ride with a dealership until ive had my licence 6months but im thinking at the 6k mark would i be best buying a new RL or a vintage bike. Not just modern bikes - was at the Charterhouse classic bike auction at Haynes a couple of months ago. While some bikes made good money an awful lot failed to get any interest or bids close to the reserve.
Why do you think that is?
@@ontheroadadventure the '40 year rule' still stands. People want the bikes (and cars!) they desired when they were young - so as they reach 60 and have spare money, they buy them. As they pass 70 they think they won't use them that much anymore and try and sell them. The further you get from the '40 year' gap the less interest the vehicles get.
Obviously some iconic examples will continue to make good money but, 40 years ago when I started riding, old riders were really chasing pre-war bikes. How much interest is there in a BSA J12 these days? But if you have a clean Katana or CBX 1000 you'll probably still get big money!
But I wonder what they will get when they try to sell on in 2030? I know someone who bought a tatty Vincent Rapide about 10 years ago for around £23,000. His argument was they 'never lose money'. He's restored it (£££) and enjoyed using it but a similar example went through Charterhouse in the spring and it sold for £25,000. Financially he would have been 'better off' leaving the money in a savings account! He's 'lost' a lot of money for his grand total of 4000 miles riding! 😆

@@FFVoyager I hope to be one of those old boys on an old fashioned petrol bike one day!

Perhaps people selling 2nd hand need a quick assessment of whether they actually want to sell or just have something depreciate under their eyes, 2 very different prospects
Hard times indeed, everyone wants to take what they can and more

We tend to agree with you. The current situation with cost of living is causing things to change and they need to adapt and overcome
