- This is an AWESOME live 1979 era performance of the classic song ~ The Chain (one of my faves)!! This is from Fleetwood Mac's GREAT Tusk Documentary. I (fondly) remember first watching this (and the rest of this doc.) when I was 12 years old (back in early 1981) with my mother.

The energy of the crowd is insane.
They also snorted up big piles of coke before the show.
They weren't focused on recording the show on their phones
That’s how it was!!!
Only a band like this could produce that type of energy from a crowd. they were 1 of a kind, to never be replaced.
Insanely loud
How they can play like this coked to the gills and still sound like the best band there ever was absolutely amazes me. The electricity coming from the crowd can even be felt through a crappy 40-odd year old video recording. Awesome!
Must of been top notch stuff and not the bashed up crap me and friends sniffed when we was younger

Such a biased sentence.

Lindsey Buckingham may really be that one guitarist that everybody calls the most underrated ever.
And they would be right this time.
Yep, either him or Alex Lifeson.
He is okay… average level. But a good singer.

🙌🎯
This is EASILY one of the best songs pop music has ever generated. The heartbreak, the sorrow, the grief...it's all splashing off of it. Wow! Shivers!
Agree, but I’m not sure it falls under pop. It’s rock, back when rock was the popular music.
This is not pop, it is rock!
Absolutely their best song... 🎶 🎵 🎼 ever.
@@vitorpardal3713 the original way the word 'pop' was used was to refer to music with melodies that stuck that belonged on radio. an umbrella term which *included* much of the rock of the day. i.e. jethro tull was even considered 'pop.'
that term being usurped by the whitney houston and mj synthey crowd in the 80s meant that these inane comments would ensue in places like here, but the convo is just stupid. who cares how you *categorize* anymore. eff boxes, it's for absolute noodles
still. original sense and usage of the word? this song is pop. it is rock that is under the umbrella term pop. sorry, but it's the truth.
It's more soft rock
Lindsey absolutely shreds it in this video. U can just FEEL every emotion he's going thru when he does this song, "I'm so afraid" and "go your own way" u can tell by watching Lindsey and Stevie they have alot of passion and heartache between them Both
Yes 😢. His body language and vocals in this performance appear to be so visceral that it's mesmerizing.
He was also coked out of his skull. This was during the “Tusk” era and their drug use had increased significantly. Stevie looks like she’s just trying to stay out of his way.

I saw both the 🎉Rumors tour and Tusk tour. Both absolutely amazing.

You’re so lucky
Lindsey's solo is one of the greatest rock n' roll solos ever, and yet it only shows a small fraction of his technical facility on the instrument. It is the PERFECT solo for the song. He could have gone off on some great soloing tangent, and it would've been good, but he plays here to serve the song.
THAT is what makes him one of the greats. He often "speaks softly but carries a big stick" musically, by exercising restraint.
Lindsey was a son of a bitch friend to Stevie. I'm still trying to figure out why he abused her
Can you imagine having to perform break up songs with your ex for nights on end? No wonder they were coked out of their mind! No wonder the music had so much passion.

If you read Stephen Davis’s book Gold Dust Woman the biography of Stevie Nicks you get a complete window into how deeply and dedicated all of the members of Fleetwood Mac were into music. They all lived and breathed instruments , harmonies and song lyrics from before they left school. When that comes together as a group, you get this, perfection.
Real musicians. Real music.
And real coke.
Simply incredible performance...the glances sideways over from Nicks to Buckingham tell it all, even to this day. Iconic.
It kills me how Stevie is so confused and concerned about Lindsey's aggressively passionate singing and guitar playing. She is like "oh no he did too much in the backstage here we go"
Is this song specifically about those two? I'm too young to remember - or more accurately I didn't exist for another 10 years after this! Makes me laugh how certain ppl are joking about cocaine, the bands use and even their own use, yet they wouldn't dream of letting modern youth near it!

You saw Heart live?? and Fleetwood Mac? That's freakin awesome.
Heather Smith I was lucky enough to see Fleetwood Mac twice on the marathon 1979-1980 Tusk tour. My 1st show, on Dec 1st 1979 blew me away! Got "stadium seats" (standing seats on the field of an indoor football stadium) for $10. Stood outside in single digit temperatures for 3 hours, waiting for the stadium security to let the crowd in. Doors opened and ran in. Got 20 feet from the stage right in the middle! Wow! I was amazed how much they rocked in person vs the album recordings. Lindsay Buckingham was on fire! The band was still in their prime musically...and they had the money to buy the best equipment! Remember them playing the Chain! Really loved how they'd turn the lights down midway through the song...,and then the rhythm section of John McVie & Mick Fleetwood would kick-in...1st Mick tapping on the drums, then John chiming in w the 1st bass line, then the spotlight hit John, " doog-dada-doog" and then Lindsay joined in the fun w that magnificent guitar jam...."running in the shadows". I remember turning around, after the song ended, as crowd erupted, and the house lights went down. All I saw were Bic Lighters ablaze everywhere and 20,000+ stomping their feet for more!
I love watching Mick Fleetwood when the band is pumping. Here is a man who feels the music in every fibre of his being.

The fact that he's high on acid probably helps too.

The song has an almost operatic quality to it, what with the internal conversations going on during it.
One aspect of this song hasn’t even been alluded to in any of these comments - John McVie’s bass solo. Sounds like thunder coming down from the heavens. It carries the entire last two minutes of the song. After the guitar comes back in John just goes into full beast mode. If anyone in Fleetwood Mac could be considered underrated, it’s Mr. McVie. He and Mick are the glue that have kept this band going all these years.
I’m proud to call John my first bass teacher. I can’t read a note of music, but I learned to play by playing along with “Rumours”. At one point or another, bands I’ve played in over the past 45+ years have played every single song on the album plus “Silver Springs”. I’ve JUST ABOUT got it right after all this time.
It should also be noted that McVie is playing a one-of-a-kind Alembic Series I fretless bass with a stainless steel fretboard.
Incredible performance- in a deafening crowd. The bass tone in the second half is hypnotic, the groove is so compelling... can almost taste it A kind of mystical experience

The sound system can barely take the sound of the crowd going crazy. Great song. Love the Angel live video from that same year. Love nearly anything with Lindsay and Christine together on vocals. All three on chorus is velvet heaven.
When concerts were about MUSIC. That fucking CROWD. That everything.
omg listen to that crowd!! it raises chills on my arms.
WE were stoned...
I miss 1976; I want to go back.
Can`t og back. Ain`t never goin` back again.
i wouldn't go back if i could. no way.
They are so into it!
My girlfriend and I saw Fleetwood Mac in Sydney Feb 1980. Tusk tour. We have always loved this band. We will never tire of their incredible music. Saw them again a couple of years ago. They are still amazing live. Lindsay is in my book one of the greatest guitarists going around. This song is one of their best. A lot of love and some hate, mixed with drugs and money, wrapped up in pure passion for their art. You can't just write stuff like this. You have to live, feel and breathe it.
Words can't begin to express, the movement the stering of the soul .
Out of life experince that you get from each one of these musicans.
I was there with ya in 1980! Australian folk I met there then and later on are some of the greatest folks I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and knowing!!! 💝💝💝
Best version ever
Mick's intensity, Buck's from the soul; the bands youthful full exuberance exhibited live....and the crowd's energetic loud appreciation, truly say's something of a bygone era 😎
And coke, lots of coke.
I remember this concert tour,,,,, I think I paid about $11.50 for a ticket, and that was pretty steep back then.
Jackle61 wow
Absolutely worth it tho probably
Lindsey Buckingham was rated as #100 of the greatest guitarists ever by Rolling Stone magazine. I'd put him above at least 90 of the others they listed - and he often sang lead besides!
Ke Mac SEVERELY under rated.
Lynyrd Skynyrd's 70's band has the best guitarists.
I always rated Lindsey one of the best. No one else at the time played as he did. They tried to replace him with 2 guitarists and it did not work. That was how good he was(and still is if you watch him and Stevie on Letterman in '09).
Great guitarist! Top 10 is way too much though...
@@1besieged they had the best guitarists in Lynyrd Skynyrd anyway
Old but never out of date
What’s lost on today’s music is that talent was talent Lindsey and FM s talent was impossible to ignore and yes he is seriously underrated
Who’s watching in November 2019? The guitar/bass solo at the end is incredible
It was incredible live in 2016.
ME
MidniteBlues I’m still watching. FM is fantastic memories.
All time classic
I pretend I’m a formula one driver ..
LEGENDARY! One of the great bass lines in R&R history.
One word Brilliant
Wasn't born when they did this... but wish I wuz
1979, the year I graduated from high school. Bringing back the memories......damn, damn, damn, back in the day.
+Unit 38 that's crazy for me to fathom. Lucky generation...
+Neo PC 👍👍👍😘
Same here! It was an incredible year!
+mrkentucky03 😀
+mrkentucky03 What made it incredible? It was the start of disco and Donna Summer. It was the year that excess was out of control, Jimmy Carter fucking up the Iranian Hostage Crisis and, cocaine began destroying lives. Not such an incredible year.
4:59, when you realise you've left your bag of coke at home.
Lmao

The Best years of my life when this band rose up!!! Music PEAKED in the late 70s - downhill ever since!
RIP Christine 🙏 Sing with angels
I agree, I was 18 in 1975 and remember the 1st time I heard them on the radio. I was hooked from then on and am still listening at 65. I will always love them as my favorite band from the 70's.
