Dont even get me started on squatting in CA. My mom died of covid dec 2019, her ex broke in and it took me A YEAR AND A HALF to get him removed from the premises. During that time he moved in his new gf, her 30 something child, they changed the locks on the house and gates and the cops refused to cut them for me and said if i went in the yard it would be considered breaking and entering. They threw out my families ashes (im the last living member of my family so my parents and grandparents ashes), killed my moms dog, one of her horses, stole all our guns and every heirloom or momento i could have possibly inherited. By the time I got them out it took me another year and a half to clean up and sell the house. I had to drop 80 grand into repairs, and 40 rolloff dumpsters (the 20 yard semi truck size ones) full of trash and stuff they probably stole from abandoned houses and brought to the property. i spent months just trying to sift glass and stuff off the top layer of dirt within 30 yards of the house in every direction. It was a nightmare. Thank GOD timing worked out and when i sold the house it was during peak covid inflation which covered all that shit i had to fix. But it was a nightmare NOBODY should have to go through after losing their last family member. I was only 33, i'd never even dealt with anything like this before and navigating all the legal stuff without anyone to help was exruciating. CA needs MAJOR reform, criminals in general are so protected here. I can only hope those squatters meet the worst possible end by other druggies in their lives. Oh and on their way out (they left the day before the cops officially showed up to have them removed) they stole my RV, and they had posted pics of them getting it running to steal it on their public FB accounts of which i have photos of everything including their saying they intend to take it and the cops wouldnt do ANYTHING UNTIL the RV actually left the property, even though isnt them stating it publicly conspiracy to commit a crime?

The head guy had a heart attack after the Covid vaxx but luckily that was right as I was ready to sell. RIP sarge he was a cool dude. The problem is it’s easier for a squatter to get you in trouble than it is the other way around. The Squatter's Rights laws from a few hundred years ago were designed for homes that were actually abandoned, or the occupants had died, or it was vacant for years and falling apart. People could move in and restore the property, and then after 10 years, they can get a deed to the property.
The way it's abused today is nuts.

In Judaism there's a rule in regards to squatting where if a property is squatted in for 10 or more years ownership is transferred to the squatter so as to avoid property stagnation and monopolizing.
Granted that's the thing, 10 years have to pass, otherwise the owner can evict the squatter before that time.

We STILL have that shit in France unfortunately.
Not too long ago there was a couple of old folks who went homeless because of it.
They went on vacations, came back to a squatted house and... That was it... they had to live in Hotels (that THEY had to pay for) because it was now legally the squatter's home until evicted, which can take months to years, and CAN'T happen during winter, in addition to being very expensive.
On top of that, you STILL have to pay for all the charges ( water, electricity, gaz, taxes ), have to keep the house safe and up to date with the norms and if you don't... They can throw you to court !
Usually when you get back your home, it's completely destroyed.

Tip: if someone is squatting in your house, don't call the cops first. If you do, all it does is establish that they're living there and you don't want that. Wait till they leave and change the locks and place a no trespassing sign on the property that's clearly visible. When the squatter comes back with police tell them that someone had tress passed on your property.

She 'rented' the airbnb, so she basically has residency as far as cops are concerned, it's a civil matter. She can only be thrown out with court order, which will take months. If you lock her out, she can just break a window to get back in, still a civil matter as she is a resident, the only thing you can do is to sue her for damages. She can even drill the door to get in, again you can only sue her for it. She technically isn't breaking and entering as she is a resident. It's like how cops can't arrest you for breaking your own window or door. Cops will do nothing but watch, it will take something on the level of her trying to set the place on fire or something for them to act, but if you put your hands on her and stop her from doing whatever she wants with force, you can get arrested. I know it's ridiculous, but it is what it is...

During the 80s, a friend of my dad had his house squatted by 2 people. The thing is, that friend of him was working as a carpenter for years, and was making roofs most of the time. Guess what he did one day. That's right folks, he completely removed the roof from the house. Local forces didn't do anything because it was his house and he had the right to do whatever he wanted with it, and the 2 people, strangefully, left very soon after that. As it was in the 80s there weren't that much electronics as there is now so it was kinda easy to remove/protect anything from water had it rained during the night, but I couldn't imagine doing something similar this day with every electronic we have in our houses.

It is the same thing in France. One of my dads friend has a house in southern France that he rents. He has fix for this. If the renter refuses to pay the rent and squats, he can just turn off the system that evacuates water (which only him has access to) and to make the house unlivable until the squatter leaves. It takes like 2 to 3 years of legal action just to get the police and justice to do their job. Even if he has to renovate after that it's just less complicated.
Also my aunt who lives in France got her appartment squatted for 2 years. The guy destroyed the place and didnt have any legal issues, while my aunt had to renovate the place from her own pocket. That shit is crazy.

Spilling oil in common areas = booby trap , thats a federal crime ...
Removeing the front door handle = rendering living space unsafe , thats a crime .
Threatening his family = uttering threats , thats a crime.

I would order a case of Surstromming and instead of having a noise party at 6am, we'd have the 6am Surstromming can opening and pouring under the door.

It is great idea but would backfire and the stench in this house would be unbearable.
The entire house would need to be vented for a week.

There's no way 1 cop call to the apartment costs $3.5k in taxes. What is that estimate based on? Shooting thin air? The average monthly salary for a cop in California is $7000, around $40 per hour. If we assume 3 cops go to the apartment each time, and every event takes 2 hours (generous), then that amounts to $240 in fees for the LAPD. Even if we double that amount to account for subsidiary fees, then every cop call costs approx. $500. Not even close to $3.5k. Going by the same numbers as 35:20, 250 incidents a year, for 30 years, that's a total of *$3,750,000* . So despite what she's doing, she is definitely not costing 10's of millions of dollars.

If you can't protect your property with some physical force, it's not really yours.

I mean the government can come up with any old BS excuse to take everything you "own", so nothing is really yours anyway.

I mean we have to pay property taxes so that alone makes it not our property.
