Many people don´t ever found it out that like 80%+ men you see in Finland has been in military service. They all know how to use weapons etc. Think E.g. you go shopping or anywhere. Most of men you see has military skills.

They all have same basic skills. They can use assault rifle etc. basic stuff. Then some of them can drive tank, some are snipers, some are paratroopers etc etc. There is lot of skills everywhere.

VMTL = vapautus marssi-, taistelu-, ja liikuntakoulutuksesta. Et means you are exempt from doing any physical tasks and you need to get that from a nurse or a doctor at the garrison. So it is basically a sick day. Many guys just go to see the doctor in the morning to get this VMTL for no reason. Not girls tho. Girls love the army. 😄

Ofc since women have to want to come there in order to be there. also almost all soldiers are men so it makes sense.

Since military service or civilian service is mandatory for men by Finnish law, refusing to take part in neither one will get you a prison sentence. 173 days in prison seems to be the norm. Amnesty International has criticized this practice. The UN human rights committee has been criticizing the length of the civilian service, because traditionally it has been longer than the basic military service. Whatever one's stance on this, obviously the authorities want as many as possible to do the military service, so there will probably not be any changes to the current practices anytime soon. Some men (5-10% every year based on some statistics) are of course exempt from any service because of physical or mental issues.

We have this for a reason. We are a small country and Russia is a big country. We do not want to live under Russian rule, so we are prepared to fight back if they decide they want that. To that end, I think it's only fair if we draft so much of our men and women in future in this way to the military.
