      In his first autobiography Merle said he learned everything he knew about singing from Lefty Frizzell. As a young man he even got to sing for Lefty. After Lefty died, Merle bought his old guitar (from a fan, I think) and gave it to Lefty's family.

    back in '71-73 AM Radio was dominated by John Denver, Dottie West, JOhnny Cash, and GOrdon Lightfoot among the Western Music genre. So I never heard of Lefty Frizzel passing way ...in fact didnt discover his music till i was 48 yrs. old..which is
    the same age he passed away. But Lefty's music is treasure among my top 3 western
    singers of all-time. I believe actor Jack Black could do a great job in a Lefty
    Frizzel Film Biopic...although I'm sure Country Fans wouldnt agree even though Mr. Black can play guitar.The Song 'She found the Key' captures the feeling of a 15 yr married husband falling in love with a new woman to a 'tee'. Not that its happened yet.

      I discovered lefty in my 20's becasue of Merle Haggard. Few in the UK know who he is. Lefty had bad management like so many in the 50's and was never given the right material or had a bad record deal and the record company were not really interested.. If he had been in the same camp as Elvis he would have been huge. Heard that from a singer not sure which one. Norm Hamlet who has played steel for Hag forever played with Lefty in the early 60's

      My parents listened to country music when I was a kid. I liked it until just before my teen years where I went to Rock & Heavy Metal. Like many kids at that age, I rejected country as it was my parents music.
      Some country came back in my life in the 90s. I got back into Johnny Cash and Hank Sr. around 2000. Then about five years ago I started listening to Merle, Willie, & Waylen much more frequently.
      Now I still like Pearl Jam & Smashing Pumpkins. I find it interesting that country was singing about sex, drugs, & alcohol way before Rock & Roll did.

    • @quietcorner293
      @quietcorner293 9 лет назад +4

      I think Country Music is due for the next major revolution. Just like what happened to Rock & Hip Hop in the early 90's. Rock was in the same boat in the late 80's & early 90's like Country is today. Remember all the Glam/Hair/Pussy Rock bands making money off of crappy ballads? Then came the pure punk sound out of Seattle.
      Hopefully the next major wave is coming that will shake Nashville to its core. I'm sure there are Outlaw musicians out there just waiting for their music to take over.

    • @sledge1960
      @sledge1960 9 лет назад +6

      Jeffrey Teeselink Country music has been a great friend to me all my life, I'm in my 50's now and it's carried me through a lot of bad stuff. The thing about the old traditional country sound, when they sang about sex, addictions and the bad things in life that make it so hard at times it was more often a warning whereas when Rock & Roll addressed those subjects it generally glorified them, Country music tells the truth about it. I agree too that what's coming out of Nashville today is a joke.

    Lefty sang this song first. I used to live in Nashville and become friends with his nephew Corey. They both had that same kind of red hair. Corey looked more like lefty than he did his daddy. David Frizzell is Corey’s dad. David is a great singer also! He had a major hit with Shelly West called your the reason God made Oklahoma. When I lived in Nashville I was very fortunate enough to meet and know Corey a little bit. His uncle Lefty gave Corey his diamond ring and bo when I tell you a diamond ring that’s exactly what it was! Good humble people. Corey has a talent. It’s not music but it is his drawings. He has an art for drawing. Funny thing is I never sang for Corey or his daddy. I was nervous and drawed back knowing how great Lefty was. The opportunity was there but I let it slide by like a fool. The direction of this song is correct. Lefty made it a hit! What is so cool about Lefty is he was Merle haggard’s hero. That’s why he covered this song. I’m not gonna try to start an argument about this but Keith Whitley one of the most greatest voices that’s ever been idolized Lefty even though he started in bluegrass. He thought Lefty walked on water. We’ll they are all in Heaven now and I’m sure they have enjoyed each other’s company. I can’t wait to get there too so so I can hear that harmony! Wow! Take care Corey, I reckon you don’t box no more. See y’all!!!

    @dannynanner Keith adored Lefty and modeled his singing after Lefty's legato style. When people said that Keith sounded too much like Lefty, Keith took it as the highest praise one could give him.

    @RossM3838 Its a shame Keith passed away before he recorded more of Leftys covers. Hell, its a shame period he was a great singer, one of a few from the 80's i like to listen to. Lefty and Keith both great singers.

    They have pictures of the guitar all over their website.

    Very nice version. This song was cowritten by Whitey (Sanger) Shafer and it really suited Whitey’s voice better.

    The very first LP I bought as a 15 year old was "Lefty Frizzell sings the songs of Jimmie Rodgers"! Lefty will always be my all-time favorite country singer! That tribute album to Lefty by Willie Nelson was atrocious! Especially the way he messed up my Favorite Lefty song "Look what thoughts will do". He omitted the last verse which was the "punch line" and ended by repeating the first verse. I bought the album only because it was supposed to be a tribute to Lefty, but what a big let down! Incidentally, In the 1960's Willie was one of my favorite singers. We have all of his RCA Victor albums, but after he took on the "last of the old hippies look" and changed his vocal style my wife and I dropped him from our list of favorite country singers! The only Columbia album we bought by him was the Lefty tribute and, as I said, what a big disappointment!

      +witheforddon He did a cover on this one? Would love to hear that one. I understand he has a lot of "unofficial" recordings that haven't made it to youtube yet. I'm crazy about Whitley.

      +witheforddon Wow, wish I was around in the 80's. Born in the early 90's... I'm actually from Sweden (yes, this country has gone insane) and I would love to visit sandy hook, see his statue, see the place he grew up in and see what Kentucky is like. But first I gotta make enough money ;) His sort of song you say, wow. He surely put his magic on "I never go around mirrors" for example. I remember I saved a fan page a long time ago where the Admin lay out a list of a lot of songs that you could request and he could send it to you but the page sadly looked kind of dead, so I never contacted him. I think I will have a try and contact him and maybe he has this song. It is always great joy to see comments like yours on youtube that shows how dedicated Whitley's fans are.

      That's one of the demos Keith Whitley did when they were probably developing a new album that eventually got shelved for whatever reason. I assume because Don't Close Your Eyes was in the pending at that time.
