First tour of duty in Viet-Nam was at the end of December 1966. I remember someone boarding the plane carrying a black guitar case with Lefty Frizzell's name printed on the case with white letters. The plane was totally loaded so one could not move around on the plane during the long flight. Often wondered who this young man was and if he made it back.
Here is a wonderful quote about Country Music's greatest original singer: "Not enough folks know the name Lefty Frizzell. Not enough people know Lefty Frizzell’s music. If you stop and listen, you can still hear his influence everywhere. Every time a singer goes soft and low instead of long and hard, that’s Lefty. Every extended vowel in a tender ballad, that’s Lefty. Every slippery vocal trill, that’s Lefty. His legacy is everywhere, even if his name is not." (quote from Andy Miller [The Bluegrass Situation blog])
Back during the resurgence of traditional sounding country music in the 80s, so many new performers would claim Hank Sr. as their biggest influence, while trying their best to sound like Lefty.
This is what drew us to country music and kept us there after it changed. Lefty Frizzell still hasn't gotten the credit he deserves, opening the door to our heart, soul and mind.

Lefty was simply the BEST! I only wish he had taken better care of himself, and maybe I would have had the chance to see him in person. My 85 year old cousin actually met him in 1952.
My dad showed me this song back when I was in my adolescent years. I remember him giving me a little music history lesson one night (father-son bonding moment), and he told me about Lefty Frizzell and showed me this exact video (this and Saginaw, Michigan). My father had a strong sense of remoteness, aloofness and detachment to his character, but the passion in his voice and face when teaching me about the musicians from back in his day, and how they inspired him to play guitar like how they did back in his youth, really showed one of those rare moments of seeing the lively and jovial side to him, which for me was a real gem. That and the fact that my father kind of looked like Lefty Frizzell made watching this video seem like he was singing to me as father to son. Sounds cheesy and dramatic, but it's how it came across at the time. May Gary Lynn Johnson (1948-2019) rest in peace. A kind and gentle man, and one whom I have memories of with this being one of them. 🙏🏼🙏🏼
