We're lucky to even have what we do. The depression killed record sales. If the blues revival hadn't happened and hadn't been helped by the English bands of the 60s, we wouldn't be able to enjoy performances like this at all

      @@TheJ2effectOne of the true
greats and by all accounts a
      very fine gentleman
      The much more often
      celebrated Robert Johnson, a
      more aggressive musician,
often claimed to be related to
      him to impress people but
though a Delta Blues icon, the
two Lonnie imitations fall very short of the mark. The
old Blues and Jazz cats I jammed with (b.1910/1923)
told me : "Remember: you can't
beat a man at his own game!"
You must be proud to be related to such a giant. Tell
those who don't know him to
check out the man who inspired B.B. King. His early
stuff like Blues for the West
      End Is sublime. 😮❤😊

Lonnie was my first houseguest in London Ontario ( I bought a nice yellow brick home at 177 Central Av in 1966 $ 13,000 bucks) I think it was 1968 and Lonnie was the darling of the folk music set in Toronto. He was playing a very odd gig at a fleabitten old country/Western Bar. The audience was very unsure of what was happening on stage as Lonnie obviously had nothing in his repetoire to suit their tastes. The closest he could come was a number called "My Mother's Arms" (which he performed in every other set,I think. Noone there had any idea that this fellow was a living legend of the Jazz Guitar, having virtually invented it along with his friend Eddie Lang. Lonnie played with The Duke way back in '27

Lonnie Johnson was the father of virtually all modern blues, rock and jazz guitar, way of soloing, single lines and all. He recorded With Louis Armstrong in the twenties, toured with Bessie Smith and a lot of other stars, influenced Django, Charlie Christian, T-bne Walker, Robert Johnson... in his early records Elvis Presley imitated his way of singing and took a lot of his gestures, inflections, vibrato...

The name of the group was called the Cumberland Rivers in the other group he used to play with was called Slim and The Morning Echoes. He had a special way of playing his guitars he was like an old style playing the Blues I'm listening to how to use the play is guitar in I'm thinking now that he used to play it just like the blues players but I believe he told me that somebody when he was younger talking about to play a good time when he was younger and the way he played it is like John Lee Hooker. That's how my father used to play the guitar when I was growing up . I remember when we used to go to my uncle's house and he used to have cookouts at his house. The kids have to go down in the basement in a grown-ups be upstairs. And they used to play the blues all night long. And when my cousin was asleep they used to wake him up to see him dancing to the funky chicken or whatever it was crazy they are working out of his sleep and they would brag about their son know how to dance and they will wake him out of his sleep to make him dance do funky chicken or whatever it was crazy . Now Father's Day is coming up and I feel some type of way.😢 but listening to the Blues bring black good memories of my father.😢😢😢😢😢

    • @shayanchoudhury5764
      @shayanchoudhury5764 4 года назад +7

I know what you mean is a positive response to the music but I just wanted to reiterate that making people feel an emotion is not as easy as copying licks and running all around the fretboard. It is to choose notes which have relevance to the mood and the message you're trying to push through.
Also nowadays, if you look at pop music, it isn't as musically rich as this. There are changes, movements, a simple story, and man hear that piano in the background and the walking bassline.
For a songwriter today to make this music, well I think they would have to hear his music.
This is seamless integration of so many different elements, and also musically different stuff on the different instruments.

Music tastes change and many people have a habit of hating newer music. I remember some of my Grandparents not liking THIS music because it was different than what they grew up with. Fortunately, you can find hundreds of genres now and pick whatever you want as someone is always playing the type of music people like from all eras of music. I met a 17 year old years ago who only liked music from the 1700s. Luckily you can find that too. It’s all out there and it’s still being played or influencing new music.

      Yes
      Well, another night to cry
      Baby, just cryin' over you
Well, I've got another night to cry
Another night to cry over you
You hurt me so bad and so long
And there's nothing I can do
I'm so in love with you
And you know it, and I can't help myself
Yes, I'm so in love with you
And you know it, and I can't help myself
You laugh at my face when I say, I love you
And walk away with somebody else
You can't keep on hurtin' me
      Unless you get hurt yourself
You can't keep on hurtin' me
      Unless you get hurt yourself
      'Cause your misusin' ways, baby
Has drove me to somebody else
Well, go on and have your fun
Do anything you want to do
Yes baby, go on and have your fun
Do anything that you want to do
'Cause it's my last night to cry
      I'm really through with you

If you really love this stuff, this video comes off a wonderful DVD, The American Folk Blues Festival 1962-1966, Vol. 1 As old-fashioned as this may sound, it's worth buying the DVD ....Unless you've got a hole in your soul, you will NOT be disappointed. The other volumes of that DVD are worth getting as well. RUclips is great, but consider supporting the folks who go to the trouble to produce this great art by buying what they created .... at least sometimes!

Lonnie Johnson was a true maestro and a peerless gentleman, for whom clarity was everything. Observe the guitar licks, sharp and clean as a straight razor, and his precise enunciation. He wasn't a howler or jive-talker. He was a stylist to the bone, and would not pander to any audience.
