Somewhere in my genealogy he’s supposed to be a cousin of mine I believe from the Wages side of the family. I’ve always felt close to him through his music as it’s touched my heart for over the 50 years or so. At 77 I still don’t know but I treasure his music and especially this song.
Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, George Jones, Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty, Keith Whitley, and Gospel music's Kenny Hinson, you all were among the best of the best singers in history, thanks for all the wonderful recordings,
Wow, what a great voice Jewel has, it complements Merle Haggard's singing voice. Country Music never dies, it get's better with age. Thank you for posting.
dang im still not over it....i wanted to watch this video because i was there and ithis is the only time i got to see Merle.. then the tears started flowing RIP Merle we miss you buddy...
A country legend I've had the pleasure of seeing live 3 times and I only wish I could have seen these 2 aing together live..a legend and an Angel together..thanks Jewel for singing with the HAG
ya i have seen Merle live 3 times as well, during the last show he played my favorite song "Silver Wings" and parlayed it into a 25 minute jam which was the greatest thing my eyes and ears have ever seen and heard to date!
@bill nalder I'm so happy there is another Hag fan like myself...he's been on so many other people's songs a.d albums...butmy his old school stuffs the best...he sings 2 my heart and my past life
Saw Merle in Palm Beach in 96/97. Great d show ! We got back stage coz my ex knew Johnny Paycheck’s drummer ( Paycheck was the opening act) it was great fun! Bonnie Owens was still singing with him.
Wow, their voicea just blend perfect, Jewel with her high pitch voice and the Hag with that gorgeous deep voice is like heaven to my ears. Luv both, RIP Merle Haggard
Silver wings has always been my favorite Haggard song. That's the way love goes sounded really great and jewel was a lucky lady to get to sing with him at the end it was like his job was done.
I was fortunate (?) to be visiting my brother at Shasta Lake City, California...eight miles away from Merle's Ranch, when he passed on April 6th. The entire community of Lake Shasta, and neighboring Redding, and Red Bluff, mourn his death. He was a "local", and everyone here gave Merle his privacy, whether at the Market, Lulu's Restaurant in Redding, of Lake Shasta Dam, where he loved fishing for bass. My brother and sister in law were very lucky a year ago, to be eating at Lulu's for breakfast, with Merle at his favorite table. They waited til Merle finished his pancakes, biscuits and gravy, and was sipping his coffee, when brother went over and c hatted briefly with the great man. He allowed them to take pictures together with him. Classy, humble, and loved his fans as much as his music. I wish I could share these two photographs, with my bro and sis with everyone. It is Merle, older, and grayer, but still with a twinkle in his eye. He shines in our family album now.
REST IN PEACE MERLE HAGGARD ! YOU WERE A TRUE ICON & INSPIRATION TO REAL MEN OF AMERICA & COUNTRY MUSIC! YOU PAVED THE WAY ! I SALUTE YOU SIR & WILL NEVER FORGET BY ALL THE GREAT MUSIC THAT YOU WROTE & ENTERTAINED TO THE PUBLIC ! JEWEL I RESPECT YOU JUST AS MUCH AS A GREAT BEATIFUL FEMALE MUSIC ARTIST HAS DEEP SOUL SINGINGING VOCALS ! THANK YOU BOTH FOR THIS GREAT PERFORMANCE !!!!!!!!!!!
Two people who had it hard growing up and triumphed. Beautiful. Merle's voice was better than ever here. When he drops down to the low bass range on the last part of the word "life" at the 54 second mark I get chills.
Merle made my Dad's life and mine so much better! Dad would sit on back porch, drinking a beer, I would put Merle's records on our record player and sit and sing Merle's songs with him!
Love, love.... we need more of this...different genres forgetting asinine political differences and just enjoying and reveling in each other's artistic work.
Wow! Never knew much about Jewel but she knows Marla. This song is about true love. One loves with actions the other says, " I love you too. " Fabulous job by Jewel. She feels what Merle intended with this song.
Jewel is one of a kind and no one sounds like her and her passion that we here in her voice is awesome. Putting down Jewel is like putting down Janis Joplin...Variety is the SPICE OF LIFE....JEWEL WILL ALWAYS BE AT THE TOP!!!
i grew up with hr family,i don't know her but I am very familiar with her family. Please dont be so critical. she is a lovely lady with a lovely voice and bless heart to put herself in a position to take your nasty remarks. We don't see YOU out there trying... because it is so much easier to sit back and insult someone. Go get'em Jewel, we Kenai Penn's will always be proud of you
This is the Great Stuff the good old Music is the best love this song I remember my dad and mom singing it playing around Miss them so much R I P Mom and Dad til we get down in Heaven country style love and miss this kind of tunes a lost art.
The timbre of Jewel's voice kinda throws me off coming in after the Hag's, but I appreciate the tribute, and this is one of my favorite Merle songs. I don't think anything could match the perfection of the studio version, though... Merle's voice with its inflections on the album version of this song, is like golden butter on a hot biscuit. Merle Haggard is the real thing...
Lots of people on here dissing Jewel, I believe most of you haven't heard her sing anything else. I suggest you find some of her many videos on youtube and don't judge by 1 song. She is really a very talented singer.

Somewhere in my genealogy he’s supposed to be a cousin of mine I believe from the Wages side of the family. I’ve always felt close to him through his music as it’s touched my heart for over the 50 years or so. At 77 I still don’t know but I treasure his music and especially this song.
