So great having all of these ways. I used to pass by patterns that say provisional cast on. Now it doesn't scare me as much but unzipping is still a struggle. This will help.
This was the best provisional cast on tutorial I have seen. I think I like the method where the crochet hook and needle are parallel. But....as you said, I reserve the right to change my mind based on the project at hand. Thank you!!!
masterful teaching and demo, thanx so much ... I love that people like you are teaching the finer points that have turned knitting into a fine art for many of us. Elegant lady! Love your sweater too.
Another great tutorial video! Again more techniques I get to learn! Puts a big smile on my face :-) like many I only used the first traditional crochet cast on. Also I always had to count my stitches after taking the provisional cast on out as I never knew if I needed an extra stitch or not. So, the explanation about a half stitch at each end is a big help and now I know what to do and know I will not need to count stitches! Thank you sooooo much!
This is a fantastic tutorial! Thank you SO much for showing several ways to do a provisional cast-on. It's good to have alternatives. You are a very good instructor -- clear, concise, and you don't babble on with unimportant nonsense. The lifeline idea is really good. It's nice to know there's a way to make sure you won't lose any stitches when you take out the provisional yarn. Love you, Laura Nelkin!
That's fantastic. I always thought I was doing something wrong because of the extra half stitch/disappearing stitch. Such a relief to know it's just the way it is.
This is fantastic! I never realized you could cast the stitches directly onto the knitting needle (I've always made the crochet chain first and then tried to pick up stitches later and been annoyed). Also the lifeline is brilliant! And what timing! I'm working on the sleeve of my NovelT sweater now and I think one of the next steps is to add stitches with a crochet cast on! Thank you!!!
Love this video - I am always learning stuff from you and it is great. Using the cable to cast-on is new to me and maybe I will use it today because new is always fun!! Thank you!!
Very helpful. Thank you! I used a provisional caston at the bottom of the body of a fair isle hat and it really worked out well. I was able to try on the finished upper part and pinch the excess fabric to get an accurate number of stitches to decrease for great fit for the band.
What a great video! Very clear instructions. I love the cast on with the cable. I love my interchangeable needles and this would be great, the stitches are already on the cable! Could you do a follow up video about provisional cast on in the round? How to start and then pick up the stitches?
Oh, that's a great idea! But it isn't hard! I would do your provisional cast on for the number of sts your pattern calls for, then work one row with your working yarn. Then, don't turn your work, but place a marker and then continue, joining into the round.
I really like the 2nd crocheted cast on, but I will try the 1st one too. The lifeline is a great idea and learning about the 1/2 stitches in the ends. Great video, I’m saving it. Thanks
This is an excellent tutorial! I've tried one of the techniques before, but loved seeing the other options, as one of the patterns I'm using recommended another version, and I think it may work best for the pattern I am working. Great Job! Definitely will be saving, and watching many times over when I need to review! :)
That video was a wealth of information! Thanks! I can crochet as well as I knit, so I’m comfortable using a crochet hook. I usually use the first method you showed. I have never seen a demo of the cable cast on. I’d like to give that one a try sometime! Your videos are the BEST!
I really needed this. I just finished weaving ends on past projects and I do not like the start and finish. This will definitely go to making my work look a lot more professional. Plus it's way easier (I never count past 20 when knitting) in getting large counts without a million tries.
Thanks for sharing! does the half missing stitch mean the columns won't line up? would it work for something like 2x2 ribs or would the columns of the ribbing go wonky
Thankyou for this video, the three techniques were great to see, the project I am about to embark on requires a provisional cast on, one question for my project will be knitting with 2 strands of DK through out, do I need to have a similar weight of scrap yarn for the cast on ( I’ve been told cotton is good for this as it doesn’t catch your working yarn when unzipping) ?
Seems like an under-utilized technique. Allows options for later. I am using it in-the-round for a hat brim I want turned up and sewn on the inside. Maybe a way to avoid grafting (hate grafting) on one of those long symmetrical stoles where each half is worked from the middle out. Worth a try... Nice video. Thanks!
Thank you for this! I love all your tutorials and all the different provsional techniques in this video! On another note, I also love the "multi-toned" blue yarn in your demo - do you recall the brand/colour?
I love that you added the lifeline so I don't have to go and put the stitches one by one on the needle as I unzip the cast on. Also, how would I work the cast on directly onto the needle in the round? Can I ask what yarn you're using? It's gorgeous. Thanks
Oh, and to work in the round you'd provisionally cast on the number of sts you need, and then when you start working with your working yarn you'll join into the round at the end of the first row!
Hi Laura, I want to make a double sided hat. Mina Phillips just released her inside out hat pattern. She says it starts with a provisional cast on.vim trying to wrap my head around this cast on. Would you say the cable cast on would work for this pattern? Thanks for you advise
I would provisionaly cast on the number of sts you need, then work one row with your working yarn and join with row 2 to work in the round! Great question!
Question : I am a tight crochetor and knitter when it comes to casting on . I was wonder if the crochet hook needs to be bigger than the knitting needle ? if So how many sizes larger dose the the crochet hook need to be ? Is the a bind of method that will mimic this provisional cast on ?
I think if you know you crochet more tightly then it totally makes sense to go up a size or two hook... that way you'll have an easier time going into those stitches!
When casting into the cable I can’t figure out how to knit the first stitch. It wasn’t slow enough at that section for me 🥲 I’ve rewatched like 20 times
I don’t believe you’re counting right. You don’t have a knitted row until you actually knit into the stitches you made with your working yarn. Remember you’ll be removing the crochet chain, so you can’t count those bumps as stitches, they won’t be there.
Thank you for showing these ways so clearly. The cable cast on is the most interesting for me :)
So great having all of these ways. I used to pass by patterns that say provisional cast on. Now it doesn't scare me as much but unzipping is still a struggle. This will help.
Thank you so much. I didn’t know there were so many ways to work a provisional cast on!
You are so welcome!
This was the best provisional cast on tutorial I have seen. I think I like the method where the crochet hook and needle are parallel. But....as you said, I reserve the right to change my mind based on the project at hand. Thank you!!!
The provisional cast on with the circular needle is something I have never seen, look forward to trying this. Thank you 🙋♀️🌷

Hi Laura, after watching your excellent tutorial, I finally have the courage to start a project that requires provisional cast on.
Thanks a million!
You can do it!

Love the cable cast on!! Your explanation of all the cast ons are very succinct!
So glad!
Thanks for the many choices. I especially liked the cable cast on, it makes things very simple, will try it the next time I use a provisional cast on.
Excellent tutorial, you covered all the procedures.
Glad it was helpful!
What a great video. All in one place. Love you did mulitiple ways and how to undue them. From A to Z. Just love it

Yes! New Cast On for a new project! I love it!!!
Thank you so much for this clear, comprehensive tutorial. I feel like I can try provisional cast on again!
I enjoyed this video. My favorite is the alternative crochet cast on. It’s new to me and I am going to use it with Tasca today. Thanks so much!
Excellent! That was my goal that y'all would find this useful as you cast on your Tasca's!!!
Great video! ❤

AMAZING VIDEO LAURA!! Thank you!!!
THANK YOU MARCI!!!! I upped my game :)!
Thank you, so clear to understand
Glad it was helpful!
Wow thanks! Now I might try provisional again!!
Great Teacher! Thank you.
thank you for these tutorials - I had watched several others that were not as clear and caused me some confusion... this is great thanks so much
You're very welcome! I really appreciate you expressing your gratitude!!!
Love this tutorial. I usually did the first cast on. I am excited to have options. Thank you for sharing this with us. 😊
You are so welcome! I'm thrilled you enjoyed it!
Well, I’m late to the party, but, thank you for this video! Great teaching techniques and I think the life line is going to be my cup of tea!

Awesome! Thank you!
I use the cable needle to cast on for toe-up socks. Love it!

I’ve only done the crochet provisional(around the knitting needle) , but now I’m excited to try the last one, on the cord without the scrap yarn…
Thanks for sharing! does the half missing stitch mean the columns won't line up? would it work for something like 2x2 ribs or would the columns of the ribbing go wonky
Wow great thank you
Laura, love this video and really love your sweater. Is there a pattern for it available please?
Oh, thanks! That is called Tasca Tunic... you can see it here:

Great tutorial -- thanks for posting. What's the beautiful yarn?
The cast on yarn is some cloudborn Cotton DK left over from my Pacificus DK, and the handpaint is Spun RIght Round DK left over from my Baby Tasca!
From what I can see, I love your top! Would there happen to be a pattern??
Oh, thanks! That is my Tasca!

What is that rainbow yarn swatch in the first still? It's beautiful yarn!
You are the best! I really learned a lot from you. BTW, what is that gorgeous varigated yarn you are using..brand, color name?
It is from Spun Right Round... I totally forget the color name but all her colors are so good!
I love that you added the lifeline so I don't have to go and put the stitches one by one on the needle as I unzip the cast on.
Also, how would I work the cast on directly onto the needle in the round?

It is Spun Right Round DK I used on Tasca for babies! www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/tasca-for-babies

I am doing the cOWL from October. Do I need a 2nd yarn to do the cast on or just use my MC for my cOWL?
To see the 1/2 at the end, would you put a marker so you can see it when you picke. Up?
You could, but I think it is very obvious once you get to it!
What ever your wearing is nice .Did you make it?
Yes, that is my Tasca Top! A fav of mine!
@@LauraNelkin do you have a pattern for me ?😊
What is the best way to join in the round with provisional cast on? Making a hat. Thanks
I would provisionaly cast on the number of sts you need, then work one row with your working yarn and join with row 2 to work in the round! Great question!

I think if you know you crochet more tightly then it totally makes sense to go up a size or two hook... that way you'll have an easier time going into those stitches!
What is a slippery yarn for the provisional cast on? What type of fiber is used? Weight?
You want to use a yarn that is a similar weight to your working yarn... just make sure it isn't too "fuzzy" or grippy so that it will unzip easily!
what does it matter which way you do the provisional cast on if you are going to pull out the stitches later?
It is really how you like working it!
Oh I thought that provisional cast on was the same as the icord edge. I'll look for a tutorial for Icords.
How to working a knit one purl one on a provisional cast on ?
When casting into the cable I can’t figure out how to knit the first stitch. It wasn’t slow enough at that section for me 🥲 I’ve rewatched like 20 times
This won't work with k1 p1. Everything twists and you'll need to cut the provisional off.
Very helpful and informative; a keeper.....BUT, the out of focus segments gave me a slight headache :-(
Sorry... I film these all myself and try to keep them in focus as much as is possible for me.
I don’t believe you’re counting right. You don’t have a knitted row until you actually knit into the stitches you made with your working yarn. Remember you’ll be removing the crochet chain, so you can’t count those bumps as stitches, they won’t be there.
