I believe you missed a stitch in both samples. That little end stitch that seems oddly tangled is a stitch.. It's a bit easier to see if you pick up your stitches before unzipping. Take a look at your work and how each row has 10 stitches... you only ended up with 9 on the needle afterwards. It's because of the whole/half stitch thing when you turn upside-down. That little tangled stitch is the half stitch you need to pick up in order to maintain your stitch count. Confuses most people.

thank you!! I’m knitting a 1898 Seamen’s Hat, and needed to start with the provisional cast on, you made it seem easy and thank you for showing how to start knitting.

very clear explanation, thank u.. would this be a good method for starting toe-up socks?

There are some patterns that ask the knitter to begin with provisionally casting on stitches at the top of the toe, then knitting around the toe using decreases and then back up the bottom side, making the toe pocket. Then you pick up your provisional cast on and begin knitting in the round. Look up a pattern called Firestarter by Yarnissima on Ravelry for an example of what I mean.

Love this. When would you use this?

If you were knitting a shaw, or any pattern, that asked you to pick up live stitches and knit another direction.

I always use the first example when I am starting a toe up sock. I really liked your video, it was very clear. I always have trouble when trying to get my cast on end chain picked out. Thanks again for the video.
