Your new shawl is stunning - very elegant. Cool tips. I"m going to favorite this and save it. Your channel is a veritable encyclopedia of helpful information and is always clear on how best to accomplish a goal. By the way, those pink gloves are gorgeous.
Thank you, I really knew none of the tips you presented (except maybe the concept of SSK vs K2tog being reverse leaning to each other) So, I learned many things. Your way of explaining and showing is very clear; once a regular knitter gets over the yarn placement and finger movements of a continental knitter!
Amazing tips, Norman! You said it was going to be mind blowing but I still wasn't prepared to *actually* have my mind blown. I'm still on the newer end of being an intermediate knitter, but I think almost all of these techniques are ones that I can make use of now or in the near future. I'm definitely not at the advanced level, but with how you explained everything I was able to follow 99% of what you said. I appreciate that your tips are widely applicable for a lot of projects, especially the cast on/off and increases/decreases. I can't believe how simple the Turkish cast on is, I've somehow never seen it before now. The combined cast on is a huge game changer. And the shaping possibilities with stacked increases!! This video is definitely one I will be revisiting in the future to reference. Thank you so much!
31:18 I recognize these stacked increases! The Fox Paws wrap is based on these! The stacked decreases are just as fun! Using the increases for gingerbread man arms is genius~ (Incidentally, I finished my latest Fox Paws wrap with a crocheted edge to bring in my favorite colors for the ends and make them compliment each other. I'm very happy with the result
yeah, that shawl uses them (albeit in a slightly different method). I always wanted to knit a variation of it but ...well..it does become a bit tedious :P
I have the fox paws pattern and class but I haven't started it yet. It will be a new technique for me. I've been knitting for 28 years and there's always something new to learn. 🙂
I used to consider myself a proficient knitter until the day I collapsed into a coma for five days. My life is as divided as our calendar convention BC/AD. We have a different convention now but I prefer the older. It took a year to be able to, without a pattern cast on for a stockinette hat in the correct size and you get the idea. This is an awesome video. It reminds me of techniques and teaches me new ones. I’ll have to watch it to relearn. He has put so much information in this with small swatches. Brilliant
Okay, I’m feeling smart because I figured out that the crochet magic ring works for starting a nice, neat start to a dpn project a few weeks ago. As a crocheter for many years and a new knitter I’m excited to learn how to combine my love and passion for crochet borders and my new love of knitting! You are so inspiring. I can’t wait to play today. Never ending thanks, Norman.
I am about to teach my friends how to knit, and will definitely be giving them the link to both of your channels - your attention to detail and willingness to go so in depth is unmatched in all of the other tutorials I have come across. As someone who need the why of why we do things and not just the how, I am so grateful.
I love love love your eye for details! ❤ I have just resumed my knitting. I used to knit a lot when I was young, but now I really want to improve my knitting technique and focus on the details. Your tips help me a lot! Every time you show me something that takes me to the next level, I'm so grateful. You are a great inspiration! You are the best! 🙏🤩❤
Thank you for yet another amazing video. You are an excellent teacher 🥰 I do love to crochet and have done that many more years than knitting. Actually only took up knitting again recently after watching your videos. I learnt so much new today - thank you Norman ❤🙋🏻♀️🙃
I am an experienced knitter with decades of experience, yet I saved this video in my playlist because I learned a new thing or two. I have been doing your SSK decrease and bind off for a few years now as I find that neater and less fiddly than the traditional methods. I will have to rewatch this video a few times to get all of the information. While I do think that your YO method does produce a neater finish, I think depending on the design it might make it different than what the designer intended. I am thinking about the Felix pullover being one situation where this might be the case. I always love your videos, and maybe it's time I do hit Subscribe 😅
Well, sure enough. It might change the look..especially if they didn't use directional yarn overs to begin with..that could be a problem but problem common sense for an advanced knitter. And yeah, feel free to subscribe any time if you enjoy my content but only then. 😉
I love this tip video! I have figured out about most of them myself but I never fail to learn something new from you! I particularly love the one on unbalanced cast off on both ends of the same row. It was genius! kinda looked a bit like knitting intarsia(? ) in the round but is flat instead! thank you SO SO SO SO SO much for the tips! I really really appreciate your videos!
Thanks so much for the wonderful video, Norman! I have been painstakingly using provisional cast-on and Kitchener style bind-offs to get my finishing edges nice and neat. Turkish cast on and twisted long tail cast on are such great and easy alternatives to have around! I also find twisting slack loop to keep the working yarn at spot a very neat trick. Can't wait to exercise them in my new project :-)
Norman you are a genius! And a hard and thorough worker. I will definately rewatch this video again and again. I learned a lot - and I am not a very beginner knitter, I already know my stuff with knitting. Thanks.
One of my knitting patterns literally RELIES on the fact I can cast on & off stitches on one side of the work (it's for a miniature jumper for toy figures). I've even used casting off as a decrease before I knew how to decrease, so decreasing as a cast-off makes sense too. Also, the knit/crochet combo makes my day, especially as I took up crochet earlier this year & for many things it's so easy!!! But knitting also has advantages, so combo work makes sense too!!!
Norman, you did it again!! My mind is blown 🤯 in the best kind of way!! Your attention to detail, your video quality and clarity are amazoling! The symmetrical eyelets are fabulous!!
i personally learned crochet before knitting, and the second i learned how to cast off i knew it would be easier and faster for me to chain-bind off with a hook! I also love the circular needle hack stripes, and not cutting yarn between colors for 2 row stripes- I recently used it on a sweater and did NOT miss weaving in those extra ends!
👏🏻 love this video! I won’t remember most of it off the top of my head, but I’ll most definitely be coming back to watch again! I’ve been considering attempting the Master Knitter program for years. So glad to have found your channel… you really know your stuff!! Great resource for stepping up my skills! 🤗
I always use M1L and M1R for increasing but I don’t like how it tightens the beside stitch. Do you have tips on this or other options for our stitches look nice and consistent? Thank you 😊
Oh..really....that's weird to a point where I could share some opinions 🙈 But glad to hear that didn't deterre you. Thank you so much for supporting my work.
Thank you! and thank you for having the personality and content that attracts such a great community of people whose comments give so much pleasure. Proud to be a Patreon subscriber.
Ooh I am in love with the colors of your beautiful shawl myself!! This video was a real eye opener for me, especially when you get to the section about lace!! I love knitting lace and those techniques will definitely come in handy!! Thank you for your work!!
Combining BO techniques also works when you want more elasticity than the standard BO, but don’t want the flare of an elastic BO. I sometimes do 1 st standard BO and 1 st elastic BO, or sometimes I’ll do a 3 to 1 ratio depending on the project. I would love a lace tips and tricks video! I did notice that some YO eyelets looked bigger than others, but didn’t know what caused it and what needed to be changed for symmetrical eyelets. Now I know! Thanks Norman! ❤
I really enjoy you sharing your knitting expertise. Thanks Norman. I like the crochet bind off. The neater increase/decrease is perfect timing for me with my current project. My go to for improving my knitting skills. Many thanks.
Love all the tips! More lace tips!!! I’m wondering if you could use Tunisian crochet to get the loops back on easily? I have an interchangeable set…always think about it but never tried it? But…I have no idea, maybe it wouldn’t work? 🤷🏽♀️

I have been knitting for years but I have learned so much watching Norman's videos. Thank you for all the time you put into making these videos. They're wonderful.
Thank you for another brilliant, informative video! I love the pace and that you always address the reasons why these tips work. I would really love further videos on lace techniques, as I already employ some tricks (like ptbl on the return row for ssks), but feel there's so much more I could be doing to neaten things up. I can't really afford the upper patreon levels right now - although I'm sure they're more than worth it - but will subscribe at the lower level as there seems to be so few people doing such in-depth work. Thank you again
thank you for this! and yes, I would be very interested to learn how to fine tune lace knitting. I struggle to keep up with about half of your work but still learn so much.
I thought your short row insert technique was interesting, but I don’t see that it compares in any way to intarsia. Intarsia preserves the rows, but the short row trick inserts fabric between two longer rows, creating an eye, or as you briefly mentioned , a sort of bobble insert. In other words it warps the knitting- sometimes to wonderful effect, but intarsia stays flat. This was well worth the watch! Appreciate your efforts here showing these subtle differences that make knitting really pop.
weeell. of course it's not the same. But if you offset these "bobbles", knit with a loose gauge and block things, it will even out more or less. Tons of shawls out there that work with that principle. And there are many many projects where the "warping" effect could actually be very pretty. Say, you are knitting a decorative pillow cover or a wall decoration - even in a very avantgarde sweater it could look nice.
Hi Norman. I've subscribed on here and favourited you on Ravelry. Thanks for your time and effort of going through all these knitting videos, techniques and answering simple questions to some, but perhaps more difficult to others. I do find some of the knitters on Ravelry a bit snappy and short on Ravelry, so I think I'll stick to just the polite professionals like yourself with ideas and advice. Thanks again. 😊
Oohhh, I've always been annoyed that my eyelets didn't perfectly match on the left and right side. Thank you so much for the genius hints how to fix that! 🤩😳 Very much appreciated 👏👏
glad to be of help. Tho i recommend knitting a lil swatch. These are minuscle details and tension and knitting style might change that a bit. Just like a lot of people say that SSPK lookks better for them than just SSK..however, for me slipping that second stitch purlwise doesn't look neater at all.
Norman, you Are absolutely incredible ❤ you are by far the best knitting teacher I have ever followed. Thank you so much for your effort. And yes please, more lace knitting tips would be much appreciated ❤❤❤

Now I look forward to using your tips to improve my results. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us. Your tutorials are always so clear both your voice and your camera work are exceptional. ❤
I’m fairly new to knitting, and have once again tackled socks. This is a beautiful pattern that involves cables and eyelets. But if I notice a mistake and have to frog several rows, I end up with too much yarn where I made a yo. I’m going through your videos to see if you have a video on frogging and picking up the work again. You are a great resource and will continue to watch all I can. I have liked and subscribed. Signed, A new fan
You've got me so excited to get back into knitting. I've done some basic stuff in the past like knit and purl, scarfs and square mats and things but after watching many of your videos I'm going to give knitting in the round and hats and socks a try. Hopefully after I'm done with that I can try to move onto some mittens.
I'm someone who is very much at home with English knitting but who is trying to learn continental style. (I'm now at the stage of being moderately confident with knit stitches and wobbling along with purl. I'm still a lot faster on the flat with my English style.) Perhaps because I'm already used to the yarn in my right hand, what I can do is reverse (or left-handed) continental knit stitches. (Left handed English style is, at least for now, one bridge too far!) This also means that I can do a cable cast-on on my right needle, so I don't have to turn the work around. (The only thing you have to look out for is that these stitches are twisted around compared to your regular stitches, so you will need to work them tbl when you work them in the next row.) I'm also a left-handed crocheter - so when I recently did a provisional cast on with a crochet hook, I needed to work those stitches tbl when I worked the first proper row.
I love to see you mixing crochet with knitting. To me they are part of the same thing. Add Tunisian crochet hooks and transitions for larger projects become a breeze. Possibilities are endless!
Loving your tutorials that the camera is so focus on what you are showing. At times for a newbie I need to see behind the fingers and this is often difficult. But you do have “Nimble” hands also. Truly support your channel. Keep up the great tutorials and suggestions.

Great tips on fixing little annoying problems with how knitting looks ! Better results with easy substitutions! ❤
It's here to stay and to be rewatched! 🥰
31:18 I recognize these stacked increases! The Fox Paws wrap is based on these! The stacked decreases are just as fun! Using the increases for gingerbread man arms is genius~
(Incidentally, I finished my latest Fox Paws wrap with a crocheted edge to bring in my favorite colors for the ends and make them compliment each other.
Brilliant
You really are such an amazing teacher 🥰.
I’m so scared of lace and the second I go wrong I’m done.
Thank you Norman ❤
lifelines...lifelines! but yeah, I'll try to compile a lace video.
Good on you! Seems like you are a natural
Fantastic tips! Around 95% of them were new to me. I would love to hear more improvement tricks for lace patterns. Thank you so much!
I am about to teach my friends how to knit, and will definitely be giving them the link to both of your channels - your attention to detail and willingness to go so in depth is unmatched in all of the other tutorials I have come across. As someone who need the why of why we do things and not just the how, I am so grateful.
Awesome! Thank you!
I love love love your eye for details! ❤
I have just resumed my knitting.
@NimbleNeedles I always do so I did! I will always enjoy learning new tricks.
So many wonderful tips to add to one’s toolbox. Thank you! (Love your videos.)
Thank you so much for this video, Norman! These tips are wonderful!
Before I watch your video, incredible scarf, Norman!! 😮
Thank you. Still need to work on the pattern 🙈🙈
Thanks.
Thanks so much for all your time working these tips out to make our knitting easier, you are very talented and such a good teacher xxx
Your eyelet tip blew my mind 🤯 I would love more lace knitting tips in future videos.
I love your tips! Thank you ❤
i personally learned crochet before knitting, and the second i learned how to cast off i knew it would be easier and faster for me to chain-bind off with a hook!
heh...well you can always bookmark this video and come back later. Not gonna delete these videos :)
Great section on lace/decreases. Thank you!
I always use M1L and M1R for increasing but I don’t like how it tightens the beside stitch. Do you have tips on this or other options for our stitches look nice and consistent? Thank you 😊
kindly watch this video. I also talk about increases there: ruclips.net/video/ddbwjw9R6sU/видео.html
I tried becoming a patron, but the membership doesn't allow for Chilean pesos, so I will just have to gift you every month.
Oh..really....that's weird to a point where I could share some opinions 🙈
But glad to hear that didn't deterre you. Thank you so much for supporting my work.
Thank you! and thank you for having the personality and content that attracts such a great community of people whose comments give so much pleasure. Proud to be a Patreon subscriber.
very happy to be here for you
Hey. You are respectful except… but could you please answer why did you remove Jesus Christ icon ?
who said I removed it? I finally hang it on the wall, among other things.
Yes I would like to see more about the cast one and how to
Great tips! It would be amazing to sit and knit with you. But the videos will have to do!
heh, i guess, would be a rather crowded room otherwise ^^
As a beginner knitter, I am in awe of all of the skill in your tips! I hope to one day be able to put these tips into action! Thanks Norman
i am sure you'll get there sooner than later with a bit of patience and lots of practise!
Ooh I am in love with the colors of your beautiful shawl myself!!
This video was a real eye opener for me, especially when you get to the section about lace!! I love knitting lace and those techniques will definitely come in handy!! Thank you for your work!!
it so suprises me that so many seem to enjoy that section so much. I was thaaaaat close to cut it out, lol!
Yeah, thx for adding that. We'll, means there are still some gaps to fill in a future video 😅
SAME wi the cast-off combo!!!
yes, that works very well, in fact. But most knitters don't have one at home so... :P
@@NimbleNeedles really it does?! I kinda thought it would but never tried it! Thanks Norman I’ll get it out and it! You have taught me so much, and your videos are the best!! Thank you for all the time and detail you put into your work, it’s such a gift and blessing to all of us! 🙏🏼❤️🥰
Thank you Norman! This was unbelievably interesting and I cannot even imagine the amount of work it took!
I LOVED the trick for symmetric eyelids, I will definately start using it from now on! Thank you so much for sharing
Great tips! A few I knew but most were new for me and some will be incorporated into my next project. Thank you for all your hard work in putting together your tutorials. Also I’m looking forward to seeing your new workspace.
Heh. Give me a couple of weeks please. But I'm just excited to share it with you guys!
Love your lessons and I absolutely would love to learn how to knit lovely lace garmets. How you fixed the problems was super to watch. I will try this out for myself on a future project that’s for sure. Thanks Norman 🥰🧶
You are such an amazing technician
I have been knitting for years but I have learned so much watching Norman's videos. Thank you for all the time you put into making these videos. They're wonderful.
Thanks again Norman, clear explanation and really helpful. You’ve aced it again.
Thank you again
thank you for wanting to support my work
The eyelets tip with ask is pure genius!! I will use it in my next shawl for sure. Thanks!! and yes to more lace tricks.
Your videos are always informative, especially to a self-taught, fumble along my own way sort of knitter!
thank you for this! and yes, I would be very interested to learn how to fine tune lace knitting.
@@NimbleNeedles indeed I just knit a huge shawl featuring these “eyes” designed to look like mineral inclusions in rock- for my earth scientist kid.
Norman, you are a master knitter. I always learn so much watching you. Thank you for expanding the way we see and conceive knitting
LOVE the symmetrical bind off! I've been looking for that for years! 18:34
I looked for days for the kfb mirror!! of course you would include this in this GOLDMINE of knitting hacks! ❤
Knitting a swatch definitely makes sense, I will do that next time I will work with lace and eyelets 😊👍
Norman, you Are absolutely incredible ❤ you are by far the best knitting teacher I have ever followed. Thank you so much for your effort. And yes please, more lace knitting tips would be much appreciated ❤❤❤
Wow 🤩🤩 what a great work! I'm really flashed. Deeply diving in knitting technics. Thank you so much 💗💗
Seriously, your attention to the finer details blows my mind. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise! You truly are a wizard!
The even double-sided bind-off is brilliant! Thank you for all of your work and research.
You’re an incredible knitter! I am so very appreciative of your skills and willingness to share such in-depth knowledge.
Dear professor, I’m so fascinated by your intelligence applicated in art! Thank you for teaching how to improve our knitting passion.
I’m interested, as you mentioned, in lace tips and tricks and wait for a tutorial.
Thank you so much 💚🌹
And as we would say in Argentina: AGUANTE NORMAN!!!!!!
Some of these techniques are a bit beyond my capabilities at the moment but worth keeping in mind for the future.
I love the tips on balancing eyelets as it is something that has always bothered me and made avoid lace work as the imbalances caused dissapointment.
Signed,
A new fan
I want more! Lovely details and with your explanation, doable. Thanks so much.
You've got me so excited to get back into knitting. I've done some basic stuff in the past like knit and purl, scarfs and square mats and things but after watching many of your videos I'm going to give knitting in the round and hats and socks a try. Hopefully after I'm done with that I can try to move onto some mittens.
Not me, knitting for 20 years, only now discovering SKL...
(Left handed English style is, at least for now, one bridge too far!)
This also means that I can do a cable cast-on on my right needle, so I don't have to turn the work around. (The only thing you have to look out for is that these stitches are twisted around compared to your regular stitches, so you will need to work them tbl when you work them in the next row.)
I'm also a left-handed crocheter - so when I recently did a provisional cast on with a crochet hook, I needed to work those stitches tbl when I worked the first proper row.
Thank you Norman. I love watching and learning from your videos . 👍❤️
Norman, you are brilliant. Thanks for all of the great tips. Definitely some great ideas here! Keep up the fantastic work.
Yet another helpful video packed full of good tips. Thank you Norman 😊
Your knitting stitches are beautiful.
Thank you! 😊
I aam new and WOW ! I am crushed by your knowledge …. Totaly terra incognita. Thank you !
Thank you Norman! I didn’t know most of those tips, so i appreciate you sharing. :)
