Sean, seeing you grow as a critic over the pretty short time I've been following you has been wonderful. That said, Mark is a top tier pop nerd, with quite a few years of this under his belt.

    • @ethantepfer8815
      @ethantepfer8815 3 года назад +8

he 100% didn't? he got the time period, the genre (folk/indie rock as appose to country), and her level of popularity at time of release all wrong. The only thing he was right about was that Taylor Swift would make rootsier music at some point, something anyone could have told you.

The tally if anyone was curious:
    2010
    - 2
    2011 - 6
    2012
    - 7
    2013
    - 10
    2014
    - 3
    2015
    - 6
    2016
    - 4
    2017
    - 5
    2018
    - 3
    2019
    - 4
Surprisingly, 2013 ends up with the most entries with a whole 10 songs represented. 2017 also deserves mention for having four songs placed in the top 10, including the top spot with Praying. 2010 has the least songs represented with 2, although 2012 has the lowest list-topping song as So Good was only placed at #20. The biggest rise from previous list came for Good Time, Never Forget You, Counting Stars and Mirrors which were only honorable mentions, and #Beautiful which wasn't on 2013's list.
As for songs that missed the cut/songs that were in the Top 5 for the Best Hits of their respective year but didn't manage to hold up for this list:
Haven't Met You Yet, Stuck Like Glue, Animal, King of Anything, Rolling in the Deep, Somebody that I Used to Know, Climax, Get Lucky, Team, Take Me to Church, Uma Thurman, In the Night, Starboy, Delicate, no tears left to cry, IDGAF, and Money in the Grave.
Fantastic video by the way. Can't wait to see what lands on your next year end lists (for albums and hit songs) :)

Less people have said this but, with how excellent 2013 was for popular music, I'm satisfied with that! Still not better than 2015 but that's alright. And oh yeah 2010 was completely awful.

I got teary-eyed when you put #1 at the top of it's year-end list, and I got teary-eyed when you put it at the top here too. It's such a powerful and moving song on its own, but for it to become a hit as well? That makes it even more impactful. And I think you captured that perfectly as you talked about it.

This is a fantastic list +SpectrumPulse! There’s obviously a ton of thought that goes into what you do, so congratulations on tracking a full decade’s worth of material like this. I may not agree with all of your picks, although I’m surprised with how many I do agree with, it is too thoughtful to deny. A few questions though:
    1. Would you consider giving more Canadian Considerations in the future? Cause these are often fantastic picks!
    2. Are you planning on doing best songs of the decade or best albums of the decade? Or are you just leaving it here?
    3. Of the albums that are about to be released, are there any you would consider doing a traditional album review for?

Watching the Canadian Contenders section, I'm kind of amazed how some of these songs were so big up here, I just kind of assumed they were hits down south. Except Marianas Trench; I am painfully aware of how underrated they are.

Kesha, fun., Macklemore, and the Zac Brown Band are my favorite musicians of the past decade. I am shocked to find someone else who loves them all too.
The first time I heard Praying I was driving home from college at about 80 miles per hour. I had to pull of the highway because it was so powerful. I had followed her court case but hadn't been keeping track of her career because I frankly expected it to be over until she was pulled back in another decade or so out of a sense of nostalgia.

Theres so many I know I'll forget alot of them, but in no particular order for best of the decade (if it was songs I just loved this decade it would be too long. Plus excluding alot of the non mainstream artist I absolutely adore):
    Bruno Mars-Finesse
    Clean Bandit-Symphony
    Travis Scott- Sicko Mode
    Elle May-Booed Up
    Sam Smith-How do you Sleep
    Taylor Smith-Style
Kendrick Lamar-DNA (that shit is just amazing)
    Post Malone- Circles
    Bruno Mars-Uptown Funk
Ariana Grande and The Weeknd- Love Me Harder
    Kesha- Praying
    Clean Bandit-Rather Be
    Adele-Hello
Lil Nasx-Panini and OLD town Road
    Kendrick Lamar- Alright
Dua Lipa-Electricity (quickly became my favorite song of hers)
    Demi Lavito-Cool for the Summer
    Sia-Elastic Heart and Chandelier
    Drake and Rhianna- Take Care
Kanye West- All of the Lights
Sam Smith- Dancing with a Stranger
    Honorably Mentions:
    1. Janelle Monae in general. Seriously it's a crime she is not more popular. Dirty Computer is probably one of the best soundtracks I've heard all decade. Special mention go to Make me Feel where she is channeling the spirit of Prince, Pynk, Crazy, Classic, Life, and Django Jane.
    2. Emotional Oranges. Words cannot describe how happy I am to see a group keeping R&B and Soul alive. Their entire discography so far has been a hit to me so far. Highly recommend people check them out.
    3. Rynx. Another group with nothing but hits so far for me. Great drops and music period.
    4. Krewella. Very underrated group that deserves way more attention.

Weren’t you listening to what he said? It’s because he finally realized how well developed, on point and necessary the satire of pop music is. It’s like if Marianas Trench actually knew what they were talking about when they made Pop 101. It’s a song that realizes how terrible just the idea of pop music is, and even hates itself for having anything to do with pop. Truly a brilliant masterpiece.
