    FAQ because im a very important person
    “some of these song choices were bad!” im aware, i didn’t want to show brad only music I thought he would like
    “why didn’t you include x artist?” this stream was already over four hours long
    “why didn’t you chose spring day for BTS?” i’ve shown brad spring day and he hated it
    “why didn’t you chose haru haru for bigbang?” i probably should’ve
    “why did you spend so much time discussing controversies in kpop?” kpop is a deeply flawed genre and culture and it’d be a great disservice to those who have been wronged by it to not include criticisms
    “what headphones are you using?” airpod pros :sob:

    49:07 girls' generation is actually a fitting name for the group since back then girl groups were still pretty much under the shadow of boy groups, and they were able to pave the way for other girl groups and women in the industry. gee was the first kpop music video to reach 100 million views here on youtube, and was recently ranked as the greatest song in kpop history by rolling stone. a funny fact about this song is that one of the group's member, taeyeon, cried before recording it because she hated the song so much 😭 but yeah, gee is without a question one of the most influential and important kpop songs ever

    I did enjoy this rundown of the history of Kpop but it did make me wonder how much research was done and I also took note of the clear bias. I am an old stan, I grew up listening to Kpop, but I have also done university projects on the topic of cultural diplomacy, cultural industries and cultural products which included the history and presentation of Kpop, while also having written passion projects on the history of Kpop, especially SM.
    I found that a lot of vital information was missing, and it didn’t focus enough on the actual developments within Kpop, rather just some of the iconic groups, and their achievements, which of course is also an important element. For example, in the BIGBANG section it was lacking information on how the group seriously impacted stan culture, they were the first group to have a unisex appeal, as well as one of the groups pioneering rap in idol groups, it is also recognized that GD designed the first light sticks when fans used to use balloons, raincoats and later glowing sticks, apart from this he is also recognized as the origin of Airport Fashion.
    Many of the most important groups were brushed over and made it seem as if there hadn’t been done thorough research on them, especially EXO (only spent 3 minutes on them excluding the song), SEVENTEEN (unmentioned) and SNSD. There were also a few points of misinformation, which were fair assumptions to have made, but nonetheless wrong.
    While I understand it is important to point out that the industry and groups are flawed, I found that it was mostly with groups disliked by the presenter and was focused on more compared to their impact on Kpop as a whole, which to me reads as a focus on presenting groups rather than the actual history of Kpop.
    So, to sum-up my opinion, there were good points and a decent choice of groups, yet I found multiple erroneous assumptions and mis- and lack of information. Overall lacking but a fine introduction to the music over time, with a heavy focus on contemporary groups.
    To finish off, this is not an attack on the presenter. Do not send hate towards them. This is merely my opinion based on my research and experience.

    • @sixeysemks
      @sixeysemks 11 месяцев назад +7

      This is a great summarisation of what went wrong with this presentation. It is also notable that the speaker's inherent bias impacted many groups, like NCT. NCT, despite being mentioned as a 5 unit group, did not have mention of other units, especially since NCT DREAM and WAYV are quite impactful in KPOP as a whole, and instead gave ample lee-way for BTS to present the best songs. Girl's Generation got dust in reference to their overall impact, as did BIG BANG, which was a cultural pioneer as you mentioned and was mostly self made, with GD producing most songs. Quite an inaccurate and somewhat limited scope, due to the speaker especially.

    I understand he admits he doesn't know much about the genre prior to the later 2000s and isn't an expert, but I think he missed WAY too much throughout this.....
    In a broad sense, it's missing entire major GENRES within kpop (ballads from Kim Gun Mo onwards, hiphop from TigerJK/Dynamic Duo onwards, RNB from wheesung onwards, the rise of independent solo artists culminating in IU of the modern era, etc).
    In overviewing artists themselves, he completely wiffed on critical details on many of them. For example, for Seo Taiji, failing to mention the man's multi-decade solo career with one of the most tours done by a musician out of Korea, a highest-selling album for a year almost a decade post Taiji Boys with virtually zero promotions/marketing, his influence on multiple generations of new artists, etc. He also says he's a big fan of Epik High and then chooses one of their lesser known/arguably meh songs (subpar lyrically, thematically, production-wise, etc)...with a verse from NEITHER of the members of the group?

    1. Made room for more groups.
    2. Prevent Brad from having preconceived notions about the songs.

    I WILL NOT TOLERATE THE NCT SLANDER!! lol but for real, I know NCT's "noise music" isn't for everyone, but they do have some certified bangers (Cherry Bomb, Super Human, Baby don't stop, Boss, and a lot of smooth R&B ironically), and I do appreciate that they can be a little unpredictable and try some wacky stuff, it seems a lot of people (execs) are afraid to get out of their comfort zone nowadays, and this may be the reason a lot of kpop feels so westernized. And a lot of the groups shown here also have their wacky moments or phases, for example I think Bad Boy is not a defining track for Red Velvet, people who enjoy their discography know that while there are glorious R&B, there's also weirdness and some fun nonsense (see Rookie and Zimzalabim), so a bit unfair to judge NCT just based on that, just saying. I'm not mad, I just wish Brad could give them a chance one day lol (Edit: typo)

    the presenter didn't research enough for this presentation. It might've been better for someone who has been around the Kpop scene awhile and not someone that started in 2020, so barely 3 years ago, who only knows recent groups... its fine if they just wanted to show him a few songs/try to get Brad into Kpop, but they weren't really informed enough to give a literal HISTORY of it. Its possible had they done proper research, but they haven't. They included groups that were more obscure, and left off actual influential groups that influenced Korean Youth/society... It really feels like they just googled a list of Kpop groups, picked random ones then grabbed info from their Wikipedia articles...

    I don’t think I might ever get that into kpop as a genre. Not because the music is bad, I heard some, pretty good. But whenever I hear a fan talk about it, everything is important, the performances, live shows, music videos, interviews, they rarely talk about albums. That’s the only thing I care for, the album experience. And most idol groups aren’t known for albums, but their showmanship.
    Correct me if I’m wrong though of course. Just got this from discourse I see about kpop.

    • @admin-yo1ee
      @admin-yo1ee Год назад +62

      As a Kpop fan, I have to say that a you're right in saying that discourse doesn't focus enough on the album experience. However, that doesn't mean that this is something the genre is lacking. Just like its western counterpart, Kpop has albums that are whole and justify their runtime by delivering a great experience as well as albums that are incoherent or focus on having a few good singles. Older gen fans may claim that only older gen groups and idols gave good album experiences, but I find that newer groups can do just as well or badly as their older counterparts - on both full-length or mini (usually a bit longer than a conventional EP) albums.
      If you want some examples of a good album experiences, try Eyes Wide Open by Twice, Apocalypse: Save Us by Dreamcatcher, or Reality in Black by Mamamoo. If you're looking for examples of mini albums that still deliver a great experience, I'd recommend Reborn by PIXY, Fearless by LE SSERAFIM, Guilty Pleasure by Hwasa, or my personal favourite [12:00] by Loona. These examples are all from within the last 5 years because the more recent stuff is what I'm partial to but if you dive back you'll also find gems.

We have more disposable income, but we're also planning for our futures and not going to drop $1,000 on buying multiple albums simply for the sake of getting a photo card of our favorite member. As a fan of NCT, i can definitely respect Brad's opinion in that Kick It (and Sticker as well) is incredibly compressed and hard to listen to, for those unfamiliar with NCT's sound. What does hurt is Brad saying that all of them are a dime a dozen, which just simply isn't true. NCT has some fantastic vocalists, and they can be heard on any b-side or solo/unit project. Although I have to say, if Kick It is cause for such a strongly negative reaction I can certainly see not wanting to check out anything else in the (very expansive) NCT discography, and that's a shame because they have some great songs.
    Edit: also, Stray Kids was done incredibly dirty. For there to be so much praise for groups who produce their own music, and then ignore Stray Kids' hard work? And then to only play Thunderous while God's Menu, THE song of the 4th generation, is right there??
    At first I felt neutral about this 'history of kpop', but now i see there's actually quite a bit of misinformation and blatant bias. It's fine to have a preference, but to deliberately ignore or exclude groups who've had a massive influence on the industry as a whole is shady at best.

    Showing only Bigbang's title tracks like Fantastic Baby and Bang Bang Bang is so unrepresentative of their music, no Lies, Haru Haru, Blue, If You, Sober? Like if you were gonna do that, you might as well have used Ring Ding Dong and Lucifer for SHINee since it's their most viewed MVs and see how his reaction to those songs would have been, but then you put in Replay and a Jonghyung Solo? With that logic should have used BigBang's Only a Fool's Tears and Taeyang's solo Eyes, Nose, Lips.

    I don’t know why I’m surprised that Brad is cool enough to do a 2-hour K-pop stream, but he earned some major brownie points. I’m a big K-pop fan and his reactions here were on point. He enjoyed the iconic tracks, the stuff that really matters. Sure, I Am the Best is an iconic song too, but no one is going to deny that it’s aged poorly for a new listener. I’d personally have gone with Clap My Hands but even though I think he’d have enjoyed it more, the production is also quite dated, to be fair.
    Anyway, cheers to the presenter who had the daunting task of choosing the songs and bands to feature. I think it was a fantastic balance, and you can’t cover everything.
