TBH I got interested into Kpop because of BTS. So my knowledge of Kpop is solely limited to BTS. It's good to expand a bit and this video was quite helpful
@UCDb4ce0lP_gDfOn2ekeez-g although I respect your opinion, remember that PSY made KPOP to be known. I still remember Ellen and Britney talking about his song and dancing on it. As well Obama's mention about SHINee. Let's respect the work done by the rest of people and their contributions to what KPOP become today. There is no deny that BTS went big but there is no need to disregard the steps paved by other KPOP groups. 😌🙏
Hes actually 48....but takes a great effort to take care of himself, I watched a video once where he showed how he only eats supplements , a banana and yogurt for breakfast and follows a weird and strict diet. So yeah basically a vampire

But the problem was the DVD didn't made the audio justice specially from BTS mics , and the audience , it was waaaaaaaaaaay better in the live performances and fancams , it was so hype , specially in class idea. And people were cheering when they included some bts verses from no more dream ( it's also about school system in SK but more current ofc )the people in the audience aren't bts fans. One of the best part of the concert. Look to fancams.
Hmmm "unpretty" that's insulting, no matter how much some fans or haters try to deny,it won't change the fact that their looks plays a vital role in their popularity and success
The fact that Seo Taiji suddenly came in 2017 and declared BTS as his rightful successors itself says a lot. BTS definitely changed a lot of perspectives in the way how songs are written so that everyone can connect to them. I am just so proud of BTS Anyways 7Fates CHAKHO OST is coming soon :)
@@yessymoreno5967 if by 'famous' you mean when they blew up exceptionally, then let's take the works since 2020 1. BE- not one track in the 'BE' album was generic, production wise or lyrically. Infact it had the most creative and unique sounds, all the more appreciable since this album had heavy involvement of all members in the production and writing and not just the rappers. It was critically acclaimed by critics worldwide with very high ratings. 2. The three English singles- Having listened to a lot from their very vast discography, there are songs that are much more superior in comparison to the success of these songs. But for it to be completely different from the styles they have previously done, it was good to have light hearted Funk songs that showcase the diversity in comparison to all the dense topics they keep hitting. 3. The 3 new tracks of PROOF album- lyrics narrating their history. Yet to come was pop blended with old school hip hop. Run BTS was a mix of various styles of hiphop, and edgy vocals. For youth is a slow moody yet upbeat song which really pulled of even more with live vocals during shows. 4. Japanese singles (stay gold and your eyes tell) are such pretty and soothing songs with a steady build of vocals that bts's Japanese songs always give. 5. Special mentions (Subunits, collabs and solos): •My universe- by Coldplay and BTS •Stay alive, CHAKHO- by Jungkook (Prod. Suga) •That That- by Psy (Prod and Feat. Suga) •My You- by Jungkook •Left and Right- by Charlie Puth and Jungkook •Jack In the Box (album)- by Jhope [Generic? Musically, the tracks in here were such a risky move, with pure hip hop rock elements, super dark, hard hitting, real and personal lyrics, stacked to form a story. This was significant in kpop for an idol to to talk about such dark topics unabashedly. Something that always stood huge with bts and clearly the member still hasn't lost that essence. Check out jhope at lollapalooza. If you mean pre 2020, cause in terms of popularity they made it to the west and western awards by 2017, then this comment won't end explaining all the ways in which they have been anything but generic, musically, artistically or creatively.
I got goosebumps when Mic drop came and there was B T S. The fact that Seo Tajji chose BTS to remake his song Come Back Home even before BTS was this huge shows that he saw potential. BTS were approved by the man who started the whole revolution. Shows that BTS’s success wasn’t any accident, but they deserved it. Each of the members are highly qualified making them a group way powerful than kpop could have imagined. A group that spoke about topics kpop never dared to touch back then. BTS have inspired many groups since and now we see groups who talk about the society n issues, we got groups who make their own universe... it’s wonderful. Stream D-2!!
"Kinda ironic how Seo Taiji's independent, socially aware and self-made music is the foundation of the now shallow mass-produced idol industry. I'm glad he could see that BTS are one of the few who are branded as idol groups that are actually continuing his legacy, albeit in their own way." from when Seo taiji invited BTS to his 25th anniversary concert
Seo Taiji is really special because he is not just special in terms of music, but he has completely changed the Korean music industry. The concept of comeback comes from Seo Taiji. Before there was a concept of comeback, the singer didn't have any special authority, but Seo Taiji didn't want to do it. He wanted a cycle of making songs with plenty of rest, working for some time, relaxing and making songs. That's why I did it, but it was possible because it was Seo Tai-ji, and after that, everyone followed suit and became a culture.

@@DKDKTV 051720 This was really really well organized, had a little humor, and good information. I know you had some puzzling goal of covering the whole subject in 20 minutes, but it took me so long to watch it, with all the pausing and trying to go back to catch the part I wanted to see, or read, along with developing a bit of a headache/eyestrain. The timing is probably some viewer attention span thing ( though Kdrama and BTS fans such as myself don't seem to mind), but perhaps it could have been in 2 parts, like 1st and 2nd generation, with a pace where more of the info could be grasped and retained. I look forward to your explanatory videos. I'm interested in phenomenal BTS, not Kpop, but wanted some general overview, which this was. I also don't favor rap, but found your videos on Ddaeng and Ugh interesting, as well as Idol, the Jung MOTS info, what seemed like a simple fluff piece in Boy With Luv, and others. I also liked your interview with the North Korean woman escapee. I was fascinated by the D & D Korean style Engrish you wrapped up one of your reactions? with and played it several times. I do usually prefer David's choice of words over some of Danny's. Thank you for your hard work.
I thank SNSD, SUJU, 2NE1 AND BIGBANG for completing my teenage years and now I am forever grateful of BTS for being my companion during my dark, sad and happy days for almost 3 yrs since I became an army. I just can't explain how their music touch so many people and their humble experiences are so inspiring. I'm just so proud of them for opening the gate for all the other artists too 💜💜
Ooo YASSS sameee Shinee, SNSD, F(x), SuJu and etc were definitely be the best moment in my childhood life until my now teenage is now complete with BTS and EXO 😭💜
So happy you talk about Seo Taiji. I feel like he's wrongly left out of KPop history talk nowadays, which seems to start with gen 2 mostly. I had no clue the 3rd gen started out being disliked bc of oversaturation. Wow. Thanks for the broad overview! This is actually a great vid for calming down fanwars I think. Stating facts.
Hey You I love Seo Taiji tho. I’m actually not a huge fan of KPop generally. I’m an ARMY and I like some of the more catchy KPop songs by other groups. So I like hearing about Seo Taiji bc I really respect his view and where he’s coming from. He’s such an admirable person.
*Mic drop starts playing* "There is a ONE group that needs a thorough separate section in k pop history and it is ... BTS" "BTS is now bigger than all of kpop combined" I swear to God i got goosebumps ... look how huge they are and how much they went through ... that's all by their talent and HARD WORK... IAM SO FREAKING PROUD BRAGGING ABOUT MY BOYS
I don’t wanna brag but I can’t help it. Bighit has selled more albums than the big3 companies with ONLY ONE GROUP, meanwhile there are the big3 who have multiple groups and haven’t exceeded numbers like BTS and Bighit have. Now if that isn’t going to be written in the books then what is. Bighit paved the way for small companies and it’s true, they said, “we may be small but we got big dreams and we’re gonna achieve them no matter what”. I’m so proud.

Mad respect for Sao Taeji! Y'all might be fighting for "who is the legendary group" but don't forget Sao Taeji the REAL legend. Kpop exist because of him.
That is why the video maker spent considerable amount of time in the video to talk about Seo Taeji. I know Kpop during 2nd gen and get hooked in 3rd gen. Good to know the 1sr gen roots.
As someone who loves Korean history and Kpop, this was very entertaining and I honestly loved it. It really is making me think and wonder who the 4th generation of kpop is. And I believe groups such as TXT, ITZY, ATEEZ, and other Monster rookie groups will definitely take the lead on that. Pretty much what you said, groups that fall under post BTS. I can't say how long I'll stay a kpop fan but hopefully, it's long enough to continue to see the changes and growth in the industry.
I think right now we are going through a transition stage between 3rd gen and 4th gen idols. Because I think idol groups that have debuted in the past few years are different than say BTS or Twice (to name a few)
Groups that debuted in 2019 are 4th gen. groups that debuted in 2017 are 3rd gen. 2018 is where the discussion is. Take Loona, many consider them 4th gen since their debut was 2nd half of 2018. But others count Loona's 2 year pre-debut period, So then they count from 2016, which makes them 3rd gen. (G)I-dle debuted in the first half of 2018 and are by many considered as the last big group from 3rd gen, others also think they are the start of 4th gen. So until a deffinitive place is set as the start of 4th gen, say 2nd half of 2018 is the start for now. ;)
So it's safe to say I'm start listening to kpop in 2bd generation but have no idea I that it IS K-pop, because anything airing in TV is dubbed so I don't know how to differentiate between Chinese, Korea and Japan except when they use traditional clothes Now I feel stupid
Thanks for the history lesson. I am an Army so you know I loved that you got to BTS at the end. I am from Ohio...USA...and am 65 years old. Never too old to have your heart made new again.
As someone who's been through the 3rd gen (and after having this discussion with some more groups of 3rd gen stans), i'd say that the 4th gen started off with Ateez, TXT and ITZY (including groups like everglow and Gidle too)
I agree. Also as someone who's been a kpop since 2009, I'm so happy that finally we can end the discussion about which gen Apink is in. I've always said this, but generations really can't be divided per decade. With that being said, I FULLY agree with EXO being the dominant group within the transition to 3rd gen, meaning ggs like Apink, Girls Day, AOA, and the like are all late 2ND GEN groups. :)
I live in America, and I can say HANDS DOWN that when people hear "Korea" they ask "Do you know BTS?" That kind of instant recognition is something I don't see with any other kpop groups.
@@m.sindhu5277 😆 BTS has some bops & I like their music. The McDonald's/BTS collab cracks me up, tho. I've heard the question "what is a BTS meal" from people that don't listen to any music remotely pop-ish. B-bacon, T-tomato, S-? Sandwich? So I'm explaining that the B-T-S doesn't have anything to do with sandwich ingredients; it's the name of a band from South Korea. Kpop literally means nothing to some people but BTS may & I think it's clever marketing on their part. No negativity here...
The amount of effort and time this must’ve taken is unbelievable and it’s so helpful! I’m gonna show this to my family to help them understand. Thank you💜🤗
Seo taji is a living legend and it amazes how he said know this is the moment of BTS and BTS literally went and dominated everything, BTS and Seo Taji living legends !!!!

Hey Indian ARMY, I am really happy that BTS were able to grow this much in India because here Bollywood is the biggest thing and actors here talking about BTS is hugely a great thing. India being a very large country with a number of cultures, traditions and languages, I am proud of BTS who were able to attract so many fans fron here. I wish more and more people get to know them in India and that they hold a concert here also !
I am a big fan of Bollywood music and loved to hear your statement as an army. Hope bts will visit india and I will visit them there as I live in Bangladesh

They achieved more than what they think . I got goosebumps. Armys will always support them . Bts is more than kpop . Purple you bts 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 LEGENDS 👑👑👑 KINGS BTS👑👑👑👑
It shows that many artists have contributed to K-pop's world domination. BTS, like many before them, have just taken it to the next step. Many after BTS will also keep taking it up to new heights. What makes BTS special (besides all the amazing things that make them special 😂) is that they have broken into mainstream media. That is arguably the biggest obstacle foreign artists face. But they haven't broken it just for them, they're allowing other groups to come through too.
*Mic Drop* "Finally, there is one group that need to thorough separate section in KPOP History and it is BTS" "It's not an overstatement to say that BTS is probably bigger than all of Kpop combined" I got Goosebumps!
This video deserves a salute!!! So thorough and clear surely a non K pop fan would easily understand everything. A quick guide to k pop history till now. BTS surely deserved a separate section ✌️
"Bigger than all of kpop combined" as an army since the start these words made me tear up because I saw bts grow gradually. I saw them at their lowest. They had thought of disbanding in their early years because no one thought they would make it. It even took 2 years before they got a mere music show win where most rookies get after a year. They were mocked, bashed, mistreated and I saw it all happen. Now that theyve become so big that even the word kpop cant contain them, I feel so damn proud! I vowed to myself that I will walk with them whatever happens, until the end.
I feel the same way , I was army since 2015 and I've seen them get a lot of shit. I also remember when they didn't have a single daesang and people mocked them for it , people thought they would never make it. Finally in 2016 they won a daesang becoming the first non big 3 act to do so but people still questioned them , they claimed the award was manipulated and all that bullshit. Now I'm more than proud to see them be bigger than the Kpop industry who treated them like shit. BTS , I will be there with you till the end , we all will.
I got into kpop because of bts in 2013 (I already know abt kpop at that time but never intended to watch it) and they were my first group I stan. I understand your feelings when bts didn't have anything with small fandom . I had always wish that bts could perform in big stage in large scale ( and now they did it). Let's us become the best fandom ever.
Yes, BTS really deserves that section! And I love how it started with Seo Taiji & ended with BTS. And even though they are from two separate eras, they share the same energy with their music-tackles a lot about social issues. When the general public couldn't take Kpop seriously anymore & started to separate idols & artists... I think, BTS broke all those stereotypes carrying the same "concept" but different purpose. No wonder why Seo Taiji "passed" his "throne" to Bts, treated them like his sons and chose them to perform with him on his 25th anniversary concert when there's a whole "YG entertainment" which is established by his former groupmate (I knew all these infos already lol). BTS redefined Kpop & opened bigger doors for it. They made musical, cultural, and economic impact. And even though there's so much hate, racism, xenophobia, and stereotyping that comes along with their popularity... Their names will go down in the history whether people like it or not. BTS became bigger than Kpop itself already it's insane. I started to become a fan because their music resonates my heart & their artistry that shows through their concepts, stories, series of albums and songs which amazed me. As a person who loves different kinds of music, their discopgraphy really speaks to me. I didn't think I would be stanning such a BIG group I'm so proud.
I laughed when a picture of V came up when you mentioned people criticized BTS' visual. 😂 Nice, easy to follow summary of Kpop history. I'm new Army and my only exposure to Kpop before BTS was Psy. It's good to see where Kpop's roots came from.

I'm a BigHit stan from the bottom of my heart. But you cannot deny the fact that SM contributed a lot in the beginning to bring for KPOP industry since the beginning. They gave birth to Artists like HOT, SES, SHINWA, BOA, TVXQ, SNSD, SUPER JUNIOR, SHINEE.. they're still going strong like damn. I read this somewhere that "SM IS NOT THE BEST BUT SM HAS THE BEST" and I couldn't agree more, specially after seeing this video. I hate their management styles specially how they handle trainees and how the managers are so cruel to the idols, they don't give a damn to their emotional wellbeing but they certainly do have crazy talented idols. *(... And I just realised Park Jinyoung is literally a vampire)*

I got that vibe too just from watching this, Seo Taiji - born rebel coming out of no where, different than the mainstream, dominates all genres, criticizes the government, speaks about social issue, thus changing the Kpop world in 1992.... sounds like our boys BTS
When I saw the part of seo taiji talking about important issues like these, immediately thought to myself people at that time had great artists to look upto just like for me now BTS
I think that point kind of disregards that fact 1st and 2nd gen idols became popular with less access to content via the internet ( VHS, tv interviews, magazine, film and tv show soundtracks). The access to content was delayed and it was harder to find. Plus these artist were popular even though the content wasn’t translated full in English.
I remember when I first fell into Kpop (maybe 13y ago), I talked with one of my friend's aunt who at that time told me she used to be a huge Kpop fan when she was young. She grew up with the first wave. I asked her why she didn't listen anymore, and she told me that when you grow up with a specific group, they're your everything. So much so that nothing can ever replace them in the future, no matter how much "better" they are. I don't think this applies to everyone, but it did end up happening to me. Growing up with the 2nd wave, I just don't think I'll ever be able to feel the way I did for those when I was growing up for this new generation. I grew up with them and they were my comfort in some of my toughest years. I am so amazed and happy for how far kpop has come globally, but no matter what, I think my era of kpop will always be stuck on the 2nd generation.
My era too for nostalgic reason. As much as I love the 2nd gen there was a very strong label influence and a lack of artistic freedom (except BB), even the top groups like TVXQ! was so hush hush about it all. What I love about BTS is that they are the group that delivers honesty and creativity with meanings in the presence of a lot of autonomy, which was not balanced back in the days. But I guess it is the timing that makes hero.
Totally understand how you feel. I got into kpop somewhere between the 2nd generation and 3rd generation. Now I barely listen to kpop except for bts and a couple groups. Guess I'm not really into the new music. But I'm glad at the surge of popularity even though it throws me off sometimes lol
BigBang introduced me to kpop in 2015, ‘Loser’ was the first non-English song I downloaded and listened to often. Got7 was the first group I was super invested in personality wise, watched literally every video and show with them on it. Not long after, BTS really got me first with their music then with them as people. 2020 I’m not as caught up with what’s happening in the kpop world but I’m still so completely in love with BTS. Was suppose to see them for the first time this year 💔
When he said "Finally there is ONE group that needs a thorough separate section in KPOP HISTORY" and MIC DROP plays in the background, I was screaming "Its coming, its coming"......and BOOM❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
As a new KPOP listener from Spain I loved this video, it is great to have a wide context on the genre and found it super interesting. The first kpop song I ever listened to, before I even knew what kpop was, was Nobody by Wonder Girls. I found it on youtube when the platform was brand new. Me and my sister were 12 years old and couldnt stop dancing to it. A few months ago I watched BTS Carpool Karaoke with James Corden and since then I am totally hooked :')
Interesting! I'm from Austria and I personally like many Kpop groups as a music lover of pretty much every genre. What is your prefered genre or music? (curious) My introduction to Kpop was Big Bang, Super Junior, 2PM, SHINee, BTOB and EXO back in 2012 and I've been hooked to many groups since, including BTS. My current favourites are TXT, Monsta X, EXO, WayV (and all of NCT), Seventeen, Ateez and Dreamcatcher though and have been for a while now, especially TXT since their music, lyrics and stories resonate a lot with me.
The fact that K-pop started with seo taiji, someone who made a musical career based on rebelling against society, denouncing totalitarian behaviour and then after that, the intention of K-pop became more of what's basically the pop music in America with huge labels similar to UMG, Atlantic, columbia in the U.S., still great catchy music with plenty amazing artists though but then when noone expected, BOOM- BTS, a group that made a career out of rebelling against the norms, denouncing totalitarian systems- from education to society and unintentionally becoming the biggest most influential artist to ever exist, ....and SEO taiji,at the 25th anniversary concert of SEO taiji and boys, after waiting decades passes on his legacy to BTS announcing them to be his heir, he yells out his concert to his audience "this is BTS's era"....and mind it this was back in 2017 and how true his words became since then.
True, I join the fandom in dna era. So I'm really surprised to know seo taiji and to here that time what he said about bts era. But now 2020 it really became a bts era

This is so interesting and informative! My Korean friend in high school introduced me to H.O.T. back in the days and I was so in love with them (I still have their CDs, Candy was and still is my favorite from the group!), never knew they are now considered the 1st generation of K-pop! Since my college years I didn’t really pay much attention to the K-pop scene till I became an army last year! 💜 BTS!

Yes thats the point of learning history because you realize however far out they might seem the legacy is there some way or the other. Plus there are pretty good jams in every gen of kpop.
4:18 - H.O.T!!!!! They were actually my first exposure to K-pop 20+ years ago, when my best friend in high school was going on nonstop about them. It was only recently (upon discovering BTS) that I really got to listen to and appreciate them. @DKDKTV, thanks for the throwbacks!!!
We are all aware of the fact that TXT started off big due to being the brother groups of BTS. They gained a lot of attraction from their per-debut era. But because they were so different to other groups, they lost many fans as soon as they started. However, over the year they managed to build their own fanbase who supports them for who they are not for them being in BigHit. Being the first male to perform at wango tango, a sold showcase in US just after two months of debut, rookie grand slam. There is no doubt in the fact that they are working towards becoming the leaders of 4th generation.
Yes that’s true but their comebacks aren’t doing well as their first ones are, they are definitely not “leading” but instead having an impact on their era

That was before they got famous, now most of their songs are super generic and full of autotune
@@yessymoreno5967 if by 'famous' you mean when they blew up exceptionally, then let's take the works since 2020
5. Special mentions
(Subunits, collabs and solos):
•My universe- by Coldplay and BTS
•Stay alive, CHAKHO- by Jungkook (Prod. Suga)
•That That- by Psy (Prod and Feat. Suga)
•My You- by Jungkook
•Left and Right- by Charlie Puth and Jungkook
•Jack In the Box (album)- by Jhope [Generic? Musically, the tracks in here were such a risky move, with pure hip hop rock elements, super dark, hard hitting, real and personal lyrics, stacked to form a story. This was significant in kpop for an idol to to talk about such dark topics unabashedly. Something that always stood huge with bts and clearly the member still hasn't lost that essence.
Check out jhope at lollapalooza.
If you mean pre 2020, cause in terms of popularity they made it to the west and western awards by 2017, then this comment won't end explaining all the ways in which they have been anything but generic, musically, artistically or creatively.
@@yessymoreno5967 what do you mean by that?

The fact that Seo Tajji chose BTS to remake his song Come Back Home even before BTS was this huge shows that he saw potential. BTS were approved by the man who started the whole revolution.
Shows that BTS’s success wasn’t any accident, but they deserved it. Each of the members are highly qualified making them a group way powerful than kpop could have imagined.
A group that spoke about topics kpop never dared to touch back then.
BTS have inspired many groups since and now we see groups who talk about the society n issues, we got groups who make their own universe... it’s wonderful.

I can't say how long I'll stay a kpop fan but hopefully, it's long enough to continue to see the changes and growth in the industry.
i agree
So until a deffinitive place is set as the start of 4th gen, say 2nd half of 2018 is the start for now. ;)
glad you like it! wishing the best for 4th gen!
So it's safe to say I'm start listening to kpop in 2bd generation but have no idea I that it IS K-pop, because anything airing in TV is dubbed so I don't know how to differentiate between Chinese, Korea and Japan except when they use traditional clothes

This was 2 years ago. Now, BTS is known as the Princes of Global Pop. As Time magazine mentioned, BTS is no longer limited to K-Pop.
"Bigger than all of kpop combined"
as an army since the start these words made me tear up because I saw bts grow gradually.
It's a blessing that you are with them from the start.
I'm crying :')... until the end.
🙂💜
I'm crying in corner while reading your cmnt. I'm feeling so proud. Bts is our love. Love you bts and my armys

When you said "BTS need a separate section of their own" I swear I got goosebumps, they always make me so proud 😭
So when you were jamming to the second wave of kpop I was being born lol
Totally understand how you feel. I got into kpop somewhere between the 2nd generation and 3rd generation. Now I barely listen to kpop except for bts and a couple groups. Guess I'm not really into the new music. But I'm glad at the surge of popularity even though it throws me off sometimes lol
What's crazy is till this second, BTS hasn't reach their peak yet
Seotaiji and the boys x bts concert is criminally not talked about enough-
BigBang introduced me to kpop in 2015, ‘Loser’ was the first non-English song I downloaded and listened to often.

My current favourites are TXT, Monsta X, EXO, WayV (and all of NCT), Seventeen, Ateez and Dreamcatcher though and have been for a while now, especially TXT since their music, lyrics and stories resonate a lot with me.
The fact that K-pop started with seo taiji, someone who made a musical career based on rebelling against society, denouncing totalitarian behaviour and then after that, the intention of K-pop became more of what's basically the pop music in America with huge labels similar to UMG, Atlantic, columbia in the U.S., still great catchy music with plenty amazing artists though but then when noone expected, BOOM- BTS, a group that made a career out of rebelling against the norms, denouncing totalitarian systems- from education to society and unintentionally becoming the biggest most influential artist to ever exist,
....and SEO taiji,at the 25th anniversary concert of SEO taiji and boys, after waiting decades passes on his legacy to BTS announcing them to be his heir, he yells out his concert to his audience "this is BTS's era"....and mind it this was back in 2017 and how true his words became since then.
