I’d never heard of Luke Combs before. Never watched The Voice, and country is typically not my cup of tea. After watching this video, I wanted to look him up to hear this song. I was not ready. My father passed away recently and this Christmas was the first I’ve been without him. This hit me like a ton of bricks. Been crying like a baby for ten minutes now. Thank you for turning me onto this song.
As someone who lost her mother a few years back, I feel you. It gets easier as time goes by. I hope life has been kinder to you since you commented this.
Blinding Lights might just be the most deserving year end #1 of all time. Right alongside Every Breath You Take, Yeah, Rolling in the Deep and Uptown Funk
And by "Every breath you take" you mean by the Police, right? Yeah...I think Puff Daddy's I'll be missing you is so much better. In my opinion anyways...
"Blinding Lights" is gonna top a lot of lists, I think. It's such a towering song. I'm a little surprised neither of Harry Styles's big hits got even an HM.
@Shock System It's a single sure, but even with the Super Bowl, I doubt it will be in the actual setlist. Im praying we get some traction for In Your Eyes.
In all fairness, Todd is literally the only person who I’ve heard say that he doesn’t like the song. And even he’s aware that it’s a pretty contrary opinion to the general consensus
I wish Physical had become a hit in the US, this was one of the best songs this year imo. Same goes for Midnight Sky As for hits, Rain On Me was my favorite, Don't Start Now and WAP were really great too
The way I put it is that Blinding Lights, Levitating and Everything I Wanted are some of the best hits of all time. Physical is one of the best songs of all time

Blinding Lights is a really, really good song, and I like it a lot. It's been a year now, and for the life of me I don't understand what everyone finds so special about it.
It gets a lot better in the context of the album, so if you haven't heard the album, maybe you're missing that. After spending eight songs of him being depressed that he couldn't make his ex stay, it is the moment where he decides he is going to call her back and change for the better.
Yessss I'm so happy Blinding Lights was your number one. I thought it would be but you never know haha. Also so glad Mood made a spot, that song is fabulous. Kinda wish Don't Start Now made the list proper cuz it's my second favorite this year lol, but still glad it got a mention. 2020 sucked overall, but wow if I didn't love the music more this year than I have in a while. Great work as always Mark, so happy I found your channel this year :D
Your points are valid, but I can’t bring myself to forgive “Dance Monkey” for how painstakingly staccato the hook is, and the vocals aren’t just bad. They’re distracting. I’ll admit it has strong qualities, namely in the production, but the vocals are worse than the rest of the song is good. It’s all I can hear when I hear the track come on. It’s hard to even listen to what she’s saying, so I find the lyrical relevance irrelevant. I don’t know. I’m glad you like it, and I love the list. I just can’t stand that song.
Some of my favourite hits this year 1. Say So 2. Come & Go 3. Death Bed 4. Everything I Wanted 5. Wishing Well 6. Blueberry Faygo 7. Don't Start Now 8. Adore You 9. Rain On Me 10. You Should Be Sad 11. Dynamite 12. Mood 13. Blinding Lights 14. Break My Heart 15. Juicy
I always thought he liked it, maybe the Marshmello drop? Posthumous release? Or I don't really know why that hold back in that list also I'm surprise Does to me didn't get an honorable mention
I disagree with you suggesting how barely anyone was thinking about "This is America". How could no one think about that song during the the massive BLM protests happening this year?
@@SpectrumPulse that’s fair maybe it’s just my personal experience but “This is America” got played a lot at the BLM protests I attended here in the states and were played over what felt like all protest montages of police brutality I saw on RUclips and tik tok . I guess it did sorta die down past the mid point of the year after the initial protest wave happened
Foreign countries have better taste in music than Americans. For example, metal festivals are cultural events in South America and in Europe. It's not seen as a niche, scary thing like in the US.
@@jayromeo940 Geographically bigger ;) I think the push to play more Canadian artists means that radio (and a lot of our TV as well) gets to dig a bit deeper and find stuff that’s just not getting traction in the US, but is pretty good. When Marianas Trench were getting the most radio play, they weren’t signed to an international label yet.
Marianas Trench. Making songs like Green Light, Symphony and Galway Girl hits in 2017. Even this year, they had In Your Eyes, Be Kind, Lover and Midnight Sky on their year end

I realize that Dance Monkey is supposed to make a point, but at the end of the day, making a song with obnoxious vocals still means the song has obnoxious vocals in them, and very few people, especially people who listen to music for the sake of listening to music, are going to want to listen to it. The fact that everyone came together and decided Blinding Lights was the greatest thing of the year in way I don't think I've seen since Yeah! means that 2020 produced something good, after all.
@@Suzyiz actually, it may have a chance at 2021's list after the Christmas music goes away, everything on the Hot 100 will gain, and maybe it will last long enough to make next year's YE, but that seems unlikely to me
What i always find amusing is how the Scottish charts are to the UK charts what the Canadian charts are to the US charts (excluding the fact that the Scottish charts contributes to the UK charts). I will admit the Canadian charts are superior however. By quite a bit.
I don’t know what you’re referring to with “This Is America” not being as important as people thought and people not thinking about for a long time. It literally went viral on TikTok this summer.

Funny, the vocals are probably the only part of "Dance Monkey" I actually LIKE. The rest of the song is just cold, joyless and sour in a deeply unpleasant and non-cathartic way for me. I don't despise it, I just don't ever want to listen to it. On a different not, it's a shame "Midnight Sky" doesn't qualify for the list proper on the US charts, that song's probably my personal No. 1 or 2 of the year (I keep going back between it and "Blinding Lights", they're both excellent).

My 5 best songs for 2020" 1. Blinding Lights by The Weeknd 2. Heartless by The Weeknd 3. In Your Eyes by The Weeknd 4. Don't Stop Now by Dua Lipa 5. Midnight Sky by Miley Cyrus Even though we had a terrible year, we still have some good to great music to listen to.
Mine is Luke Combs. my mom passed away shortly before COVID and last Christmas I had a tearful moment on the streets of new York listening to what had become my go to song since her passing. Breaking down and being about to feel so much emotion because if this song. I know the track is about sons and dads but it just hit me so when I needed it most.
My songs of the year: 10) Dua Lipa - Fever ft. Angèle No one seemed to notice this collab, but this song Is SOOOOO good, I love the chemistry between the two of them. 9) King Von - Took Her To The O Really liked the storytelling, sadly I discovered this really late this year. 8) Ava Max - Kings & Queens Didn't really like her debut album, but I still feel like she's still really underrated, there are some bops like this one in her album. 7) Pop Smoke - What You Know Bout Love Pop really has a classy vibe in this song, beat Is great and really cool production 6) Dua Lipa - Dont Start Now 5) Dua Lipa - Break my Heart These both songs are just great highlights from FN, sadly BMH didn't stay in the charts for a lot 4) The Weeknd - Save Your Tears Got a soft spot for this, It was my favourite song of the album for a while. 3) The Weeknd - Blinding Lights After hearing all of the songs out of After Hours I prefered In Your Eyes, but this Is still song of the year. 2) Dua Lipa - Levitating My favourite song from Future Nostalgia right from the beginning, really makes you feel like you're levitating 1) The Weeknd - In Your Eyes This was my song this year. Literally every time I heard it it was just a great vibe. It even gets better with the Kenny G. remix HMs: Jessie Ware - Save a Kiss 24kGolden - Mood ft Iann Dior Ava Max - Who's laughing now Ava Max - OMG What's Happening Miley Cyrus - WTF Do I Know Miley Cyrus - Midnight Sky Megan Thee Stallion - Savage ft. I was about to throw a fit if Blinding Lights wasn't the top song on this list. Because, yeah, there's never been a more deserving No. 1 hit of the year!
Blinding Lights causes a very specific feeling in me I can't quite explain that is deeply connected to lockdown and I don't think it coming at any other time would have produced the same visceral...something. It moves it from being a great song to me to one that is something even more than that.
My top 10: 10) Dynamite 9) You Should Be Sad 8) Break My Heart 7) Supalonely 6) Heartless 5) Dance Monkey 4) Don't Start Now 3) Rain on Me 2) Everything I Wanted 1) Blinding Lights
i've seen you make some controversial list picks before but "RYM's lowest-rated 2020 US year-end hit at no.7 on the best list" beats them all (i'm definitely on the hate train for that song but at least i think it's bad in an interesting way)
Before I got to #7 I thought this was a different song than it was, and tailored my remark around that. That said, my assertion is still true of that song as well: A large proportion of RYM's userbase is deeply humourless and self-important, culled from the backwash of Reddit and 4chan's notoriously pretentious music boards, and their collective opinions on pop and hip-hop tend to suck in a very predictable, not terribly fun way. And I say this as someone who uses RYM to find new music! It's not all bad! But a lot of it is indeed very bad. And I'm not even that big on that song. But at least it's interesting.
@@ConvincingPeople i have to admit i gave it a 0,5 on Rym 😅 but i understand your comment, it is interesting lyrically but i absolutely can never like how it sounds even if i have never heard it on the radio. im a huge poptimist on RYM, but dance monkey is painful
@@hyperionnova2854 The sheer number of creepy racist metalheads who call anything with a tune (that isn't Arghoslent) a sellout, ex-Tumblr social justice clout chasers obsessed with harassing and brigading minor fandom figures, vaguely misogynistic wannabe Scaruffi bros who use 1/5 scores as a baseline, and basic-ass teenagers who downvote anything more experimental than Yeezus is just stunning.
@@cioccolato2124 I've grown progressively more aggressively anti-poptimist over time, not because pop music can't be brilliant and groundbreaking and shouldn't be taken on its own terms, but because the whole endeavour critically speaking has kind of turned into an excuse to ignore or denigrate art which is actually challenging or uncommercial in favour of praising art of variable quality which has already been elevated by the industry and/or the public, insofar as those are separable things in certain aspects. Don't consider that an attack, but I'm just saying, I think I align more with This Heat's notion of promoting and creating art which is radical both in form and content, not to the exclusion of the popular (I'm here, aren't I? :P) but more to champion the unsung and uncompromising… insofar as I have a unifying philosophy of musical criticism, which I don't really think one needs. That prolly sounds hugely pretentious, but, I dunno, I find my fun in strange places, I like what I like, et cetera. You're free to do the same while feeling very differently. :3
Gotta be honest, I liked his honorable mentions way more than his top 10, with the exception of "Blinding Lights." Amazing how that song still holds up! I think I'll put After Hours in my "2020 Albvms" playlist now.

The reasons I love WAP 1. It's intentionally over the top 2. They sound like they REALLY need a cold shower, but compared to raps from men about sex that sound degrading and gross, this is an improvement 3. You can't tell me that you wouldn't want your girlfriend/wife to be in that mood!
@Cr1tikal’s Yu Gi Oh Collection Every artist has songs that don't work for certain people, he won't deny that and will point out flaws in a lot. And while WAP is good, not really an essential listen and I don't like elevating songs that have cultural impact on my list regardless of the scenario, and I think there were better songs released this year that deserves attention. But on that topic, if we want to talk about Mark's relationship with Bacardi, we be here all day.
Great list Mark, my favorite song of the year is probably also Blinding Lights, it in a way reignited my love for The Weeknd music when I heard it for the first time and months since didn't shrunk on me even a bit. Also, while I personally can't enjoy Dance Monkey (for same reasons as everyone- vocals), I get what it's trying to do and why you liked it, so I'm not gonna be a pissbaby like some people in the comments and say "not for me, but I'm glad you liked it".

I also wonder if Graveyard by Halsey would've made your list if it became a hit?
My thoughts... HM1: Like you said, this is a collaboration that shouldn't work, but it somehow does! I love the chemistry between all three artists here too. HM2: Man, I really wish this got to #1! It's such an uplifting, addictive banger that we all needed in 2020. HM3: I love the gentle vocals & deep lyrics here, but the production didn't hit as well as I've liked. Still good though! HM4: Probably Selena's best hit since 'It Ain't Me'! This really hit hard for me. HM5: Billie is an amazing songwriter, especially for her age! This feels like more of a story than a song to me, although 'No Time To Die' showcases her talents even more in my opinion. HM6: I feel I'm one of the few people who gave 'Chromatica' a decent replay factor! This was still the highlight of the album though, haha. HM7: This one snuck up on me! Sure, the lyrics are cheesy as hell, but I don't think this song was ever made to be taken seriously anyway. #10: I'm still not sold on the drippy production nor Lil Baby's warbling delivery, but man, I have to respect this for its important message alone. #9: I don't know what's happened with Mustard lately, but his production has really suited the artist that he's working with! 'Ballin' is yet another example of that. #8: 24kGoldn & Iann Dior both bring so much charisma for this! The melody is also so warming, especially with the hook & the electric guitars backing it up. #7: The vocals are indeed horrible, but that might actually fit the content here! I don't mind the groove either, but yeah, the overplay got to me on this one, haha. #6: Ooh... this is a polarising one! Cardi's rarely won me over with her flow sadly & I can't excuse some of the "lyrics" here either, but at least we got an absolutely fire verse from Megan. #5: I appreciate Roddy Ricch switching up his melodies so much (it shows he's a very competent rapper), but some of the punchlines didn't hit for me sadly & the "eeh-ooh"s kind of killed it for me a bit. #4: Hmm... I wanted to like this one way more than I did! The Weeknd sounds sincere on the hook, which adds to the brutality of the lyrics which he can sell very well, but he just sounds a bit strained on the hook for me. It's not bad, but he's done this kind of this darker vibe better many times before! #3: Jhene Aiko has a pleasant R&B tone, but again, this didn't really stick with me for some reason! It's easily the far better of the two "pussy" songs here though. #2: Man, this one got to me! Luke Combs' raw vocals sound incredible & the content is both heart-breaking but hopeful, even if the instrumentation does go a bit over-the-top on the hook for my liking. It's still among the highlights of country music in 2020 for me! #1: It's a very obvious choice, but come on, for a smash this euphoric, I can't blame you! The synth line is incredible & you just feel a huge rush of hype & excitement from this start to finish. Honestly, within the next few years, I could see this getting the same "modern classic" status that 2010's smashes like 'Uptown Funk' received, especially when the critical acclaim agrees with the commercial success! Even outside of the hits, this might be my favourite song of 2020 that isn't 'Head & Heart'. It really helped me keep my spirits high throughout lockdown! I also love all four of the Canadian chart shout-outs too! Impressive taste once again, Mark. :)
I agree with the Cardi point. Took me awhile to get on board with her voice and flow which isn't for everyone and while I'm not and given Cardi public behavior.... Look I don't hate her as much I did back in the day, but for women in hip-hop, eh you can do better, but much worse. Really what saves WAP for me beyond flat production (need to listen to more Baltimore Club) and Cardi's struggle with catching a good flow is the charisma and the quotables.
The point you made about the organic nature of Tones and I’s voice contrasting with the slickness and artificiality of the instrumental is actually one of the reasons I love Electric Blue by Arcade Fire. It’s in a similar ballpark for me, with a singer whose voice is, to say the least, an acquired taste coupled with really good production and overall atmosphere.

This is simply an amazing list in many different ways. The amount of knowledge, skill, and detail that was put into this list is awesome and fantastic. You really stretch out your thoughts and you expand upon them in a whole different level imaginable because you were able to capture your personal thoughts on these entries perfectly. When you critiqued each entry and honorable mention, I love that you touched on all parts of the song and you also looked on to the artists who made the song and you do all of that with such a multi layered and great analysis on them. Blinding Lights is a really, really good song, and I like it a lot.
It's been a year now, and for the life of me I don't understand what everyone finds so special about it.
@TrumpIsALOSER lmao Agreed. It is overrated a bit but it is still a fantastic song.
In your eyes deserved better though
Drive down the highway in the middle of the night while playing that song. See if it doesn’t give you a rush of adrenaline
That it's a hit song. Music of this quality rarely catches on.
It gets a lot better in the context of the album, so if you haven't heard the album, maybe you're missing that. After spending eight songs of him being depressed that he couldn't make his ex stay, it is the moment where he decides he is going to call her back and change for the better.
Great take on Heartless, I also found it grew on me heaps in the context of the album
its his best song in my opinion
Yessss I'm so happy Blinding Lights was your number one. I thought it would be but you never know haha. Also so glad Mood made a spot, that song is fabulous. Kinda wish Don't Start Now made the list proper cuz it's my second favorite this year lol, but still glad it got a mention. 2020 sucked overall, but wow if I didn't love the music more this year than I have in a while. Great work as always Mark, so happy I found your channel this year :D
Mood, Heartless, Midnight Sky, Dance Monkey, and Blinding Lights were some of my favorite songs of this year.
i will absolutely agree that dont start now is not the best song on future nostalgia. Physical and love again are both excellent.
Holy shit this is a crazy list
Your points are valid, but I can’t bring myself to forgive “Dance Monkey” for how painstakingly staccato the hook is, and the vocals aren’t just bad. They’re distracting. I’ll admit it has strong qualities, namely in the production, but the vocals are worse than the rest of the song is good. It’s all I can hear when I hear the track come on. It’s hard to even listen to what she’s saying, so I find the lyrical relevance irrelevant. I don’t know. I’m glad you like it, and I love the list. I just can’t stand that song.

The biggest pleasant surprise of this list: Lose You To Love Me making the honorable mentions

Great list,
And why are the Canadian charts always better.
Foreign countries have better taste in music than Americans. For example, metal festivals are cultural events in South America and in Europe. It's not seen as a niche, scary thing like in the US.
It helps Canada is a smaller country than the US
@@jayromeo940 Geographically bigger ;)
I think the push to play more Canadian artists means that radio (and a lot of our TV as well) gets to dig a bit deeper and find stuff that’s just not getting traction in the US, but is pretty good. When Marianas Trench were getting the most radio play, they weren’t signed to an international label yet.
Dance Monkey is number 1 on the 2020 canadian year end chart instead of blinding lights
Marianas Trench. Making songs like Green Light, Symphony and Galway Girl hits in 2017. Even this year, they had In Your Eyes, Be Kind, Lover and Midnight Sky on their year end

You don't need to brag about how your charts are better you already have universal health care
I honestly don't mind Tones & I's voice on the song.
I actually thought the voice was hilarious the first time I heard it. Then it got really annoying the more I listened to it. 🤷♂️
Very few people are going to want to listen to it yet it's one of the most popular song of the year?
As a Canadian myself I cannot BELIEVE midnight sky didn't chart in the states based on how much it plays, and also how good it is
it charted, just didn't make the YE list. It got caught between years.
@@urtarreviews6484 ah, fair enough
@@Suzyiz actually, it may have a chance at 2021's list after the Christmas music goes away, everything on the Hot 100 will gain, and maybe it will last long enough to make next year's YE, but that seems unlikely to me
You're lucky - the UK charts were not nearly as strong, although many of the biggest hits were the same
What i always find amusing is how the Scottish charts are to the UK charts what the Canadian charts are to the US charts (excluding the fact that the Scottish charts contributes to the UK charts).
I will admit the Canadian charts are superior however. By quite a bit.
The UK charts were definitely better in 2020 than they were in 2019 though

Funny, the vocals are probably the only part of "Dance Monkey" I actually LIKE. The rest of the song is just cold, joyless and sour in a deeply unpleasant and non-cathartic way for me. I don't despise it, I just don't ever want to listen to it.
On a different not, it's a shame "Midnight Sky" doesn't qualify for the list proper on the US charts, that song's probably my personal No. 1 or 2 of the year (I keep going back between it and "Blinding Lights", they're both excellent).
Interesting take.

Blinding Lights causes a very specific feeling in me I can't quite explain that is deeply connected to lockdown and I don't think it coming at any other time would have produced the same visceral...something. It moves it from being a great song to me to one that is something even more than that.

i've seen you make some controversial list picks before but "RYM's lowest-rated 2020 US year-end hit at no.7 on the best list" beats them all (i'm definitely on the hate train for that song but at least i think it's bad in an interesting way)
Before I got to #7 I thought this was a different song than it was, and tailored my remark around that.

SUGAR is the best hit this year in my mind 🇨🇦

Also, your analysis and review on this years’ chart and music is also spot on with so many details and knowledge of it. This is such an excellent list.
