Oksana had the full support of the Soviet government. They give them everything they need and they don't have to work to get money for skating lessons. In a sense, they are already professionals. In 1991 The Soviet Union came apart, but she already had a head start on others. They are pampered like babies and the average citizen is understandably resentful of the special treatment they gave to their athletes.
I was referring more to emotional support/morale. Average citizens don't have to resent US athletes. Both Nancy (the girly ice princess, then the attack victim) and Tonya (the tomboy athlete from wrong side of tracks and who some believed was unfairly accused) had outpourings of support from the public and then Nancy had her family as well. After "the attack" each of them probably got more attention than they would have otherwise.

I will always know Nancy Kerrigan to be a complete bitch. 5 years after this, in 1999, I was 17 and went to get some Chinese food at a restaurant in Stoneham, Mass (where she's from) and had a run in with her. She parked her SUV next to my car as my bff and I were gathering our purses and getting ready to get out of my car, when all of a sudden she swung her car door open right into my car with a lot of force. She then just started walking towards the restaurant entrance with her family. I got out of my car and said "hey, what the hell?" That's when I noticed it was her. She gave me and my friend a dismissive look and huffed, then continued walking. It was as if my friend and I didn't exist. She couldn't care less that she could have damaged someone else's property (my car was fine). I couldn't believe it. Just say sorry, that's all. She's still waiting for an apology from Tonya Harding, well I'm still waiting for one from her. Anyway, I was young and a bit of a smart ass, so I started holding my knee and screaming "Whhhhyyy, whyyyy me!" Petty, I know. But just the level of entitlement. I can still remember watching this and being shocked at Nancy’s rude comment. And that scowl on her face as Oksana was getting the gold medal showed her true colors. I was glad Oksana won that night. She was such a beautiful skater who put so much emotion and artistry into her programs. Nancy’s program might have been more difficult technically but it was boring. Chen Lu showed such class that night. She looked appalled by Nancy’s rude remark about Oksana crying.
This vid should’ve included the playing of the anthem and raising of the flags. Nancy stood there with a thundercloud over her head as millions of viewers worldwide witnessed her obvious anger.

Not just that - she had collided with another skater during practice and had bruished her back as well as gotten a laceration on her shin which required stitches. She had been injected with painkillers (which had to be approved beforehand) but I doubt she was completely pain-free. Others in her place would perhaps withdrawn from the competition.
There has never in history been a more overrated or undeserving winner as Oksana Baiul. Baiul is just lucky that the behind the scenes judging deal making that fraudulently gave her the gold medal was never publicly exposed as it was during the scandal in Salt Lake City in 2002

Oh, this was so long ago. But here is what I remember: at one point during a warm-up, Oksana collided with another skater. They both fell and were injured. Katarina Witt (who was my personate favorite) was the first skater to whoosh over to Oksana in a heartbeat. She showed great concern and was the first to offer help to *both* injured skaters. Other skaters rushed over as well. Other skaters except one -- Nancy Kerrigan. Nancy Kerrigan was the ONLY skater not to go see how her fellow Olympian was. She continued practicing, totally ignoring the situation. I understand that athletes need to be focused, but it smacked of a selfishness that was unpleasant to behold. Little things can be telling.
Kerrigan is a stuck up bitch, plain and simple. She actions were an embarrassment to her country regardless how long ago they were. Total narcissistic personality!!

At the time, Kerrigan was marketed as being this luminous goddess out on the ice, but none of us knew (until this) how tactless, classless, and undignified she actually was off the ice. Ungrateful, entitled, and much less mature than other skaters younger than her, like Chen Lu for example. So either her support system never bothered to teach her the fundamentals of how to be classy and mature off the ice, or they tried and she ignored it. So many other skaters I've watched over the years have suffered even more devastating losses on the ice, and the way they react to it when they know the cameras are on them is inspiring. This display from her is embarrassing.

Garland English there is more to it than just technical points. Kerrigans skating was neat, polished...she is attractive....however, she has no spirit, no fire. She was kind of dull, there was nothing about her performance that really shined.
I felt worse for Michelle Kwan, who has to watch asalternate to let Nancy skate. She was the second qualifier but Kerrigan got a medical bye based on her last contest so if her knee healed she went instead, And Kwan was still far more gracious in her Nagano silverto Tar Lipinski and bronze in Salt Lake City than Kerrigan was

I remember watching this event when I was 10. My family and I were so mad that Nancy didn't get the gold because one judge gave Oksana a higher score, which resulted in a tiebreaker. But watching this almost 30 years later, I'm GLAD Oksana won it.

I had the privilege of having the best seat in the house at the 1992 Campbell Soup World Tour after those Olympics. I got an autograph from Tonya Harding and Kristi Yamaguchi but snubbed from Nancy. After this and way before the attack, I realized what a prima Dona she thought she was. This just proved it. Tanya had nothing to do with the attack nor planned it. Her husband at the time and bodyguard planned it. She only knew AFTER the fact and got banned. Too afraid to tell but came forward anyway. So sad. But Oksana’s performance stole the night. Too bad that at 25 she couldn’t have been a better sportsman to a 16 year old child who was an orphan. So glad not to see her involved anymore in a sport I truly love.
Tonya was asked where Nancy Kerrigan was practicing as Shawn (her body guard) had a niece who was a fan so she drew the map of where to find her. Personally if I wanted to take out my competition, I would’ve taken out Midori Ito from Japan who was the only other woman who could land the triple axel, not Nancy.

What really happened is that the organization can't found Ukrainian anthem, and that took them so much time. Oksana was an orphan, how she's not gonna cry, she was brilliant at her performance.

Nancy Kerrigan was a terrible face for the US in figure skating. Terrible attitude, lack of sportsmanship, and average skating. Not to mention she ended Tonya Harding's career because of something that was not even Tonya's fault. Tonya was far superior compared to Nancy.

She seems completely embarrassed by the whole ordeal. I remember very well when Oksana won the gold; she was so young yet so talented. She became the princess of these Games. She had an incredible story and it touched everyone. Also, I didn’t realize fully then (I was 12) how important that medal was for Ukraine, as this country was still a Soviet republic only a few years before.
I never got chills from watching Nancy K. skate the way that I did when Oksana B. skated, she was just magical. Nancy clomped around the ice in a sort of mechanical, robotic, stiff way. I then got to see both of them skate live multiple times after the Olympics, and it was the same every time. Even as Oksana became a young woman, and was getting used to her new physicality, she was still a much better natural & fluid skater than Nancy. It's unfortunate that Nancy didn't have anyone around her that was telling her to work on the RBF and the public perception...and if they did, and this is still how she portrayed/carried herself, even worse.
Perfectly described - clomped. She had the stiffest arms of anyone I’ve ever seen. Whereas, Oksana to this day is known as one of the most comprehensively skilled and expressive skaters of all time - up there with Buttle, Kwan, Hanyu, Medvedeva. She uses her whole body when she skates
I've seen a few excerpts of that here on YT - it was all about working herself through the bone and dancing through the pain, of which she made a big show. And I can understand that the numerous miscarriages she hads are a very bad experience for a woman to go through, but I am not sure DWTS is the place to spill the beans about it. Not to mention that it is the very treatment she submits her body to in this show (and did so before when skating) that caused this whole issue. She later admitted that she had an eating disorder at the time also - this may have messed up her body. I wouldn't necessarily say that she is unpsortmanlike or bitchy or spoiled or anything like that; I know she comes across as such, but her issue rather seems to be how to behave appropriate in a given situation (which includes, but is not limited to, knowing when to speak and when to keep her mouth shut).. Her reactions are not spoitaneous, they're just off in some way; her problem seems to be social skills (or the lack thereof) more than anything else.
@@karengrace6890 She reminds me a bit of Heather Kuzmich from America's Next Top Model (or rather Kuzmich reminded me of her) - I've never watched that show much, but once I came across an episode and I do remember this girl. Look up her Wikipedia entry - I think Kerrigan might have the same condition, or perhaps a milder form of it. And one thing I must say I have learned from watching Kerrigan , she plays the princess on the outside but for the reasons outlined, she comes across as having "trailer trash" manners. But Tonya Harding, for instance, always comes across as spontaneous and therefore authentic - and the movie about her makes a point of how much she wants that authenticity to be accepted, to be taken for what she is. This is also why I believe her when she says that she knew nothing about the plans for the attack, though everybody likes to cast her in the role of the witch on ice and say that she really did.
This was the first major victory AT THE OLYMPICS of a Ukrainian girl and the first performance of our anthem. My family watched this award ceremony live. When the anthem began, my husband stood up and said to our children: “Our anthem is being performed for the first time at the Olympics, please stand up.” When we lived in the USSR, we never did this when the USSR anthem was played and never stood up when we heard it on TV. She had 2 dumb mistakes in the short. An unbelievable flub on a double flip -- a jump she could have done wrapped in cellophane on a given day I'm sure. They weren't falls, just breaks in concentrating. Had she had it a little more together, had she had fewer media watching her practice, we could have seen this.
I woulda liked to see Tonya edge her out of the whole podium. Have Tonya land a flawless triple axel for gold , baiul win silver and chen lu beat whiny why me again pity party Nancy for the bronze. PRICELESS.

I think it’s very interesting that every time Tanya and Nancy shared a “dressing room” Tanya had a malfunction with her skates, I think it’s more than a coincidence that Tanya’s laces broke, I’m sure that it rattled Tanya so her performance wasn’t her best.
Oksana had true passion and emotion flowing through her like the Force during her performance. It gave her the edge. She won fair and square. I'm not saying she's necessarily a better skater than Nancy (of course this was 24 years ago, lol), but the gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded based on ONE performance (though I think Tonya got another chance due to a lace issue, not that it helped her any). And during that one performance, where everything came down to it, Oksana's performance won her the gold. Nancy and I'm sure many of her fans weren't happy, but face it people. Life's not fair. On another night, maybe Nancy would have had the edge. No way to know. Oksana deserved the gold that night, and after 24 years, isn't it time to accept it and move on (if you haven't already)?

Agreed. The moment Oksana started her program, I knew she had it in the bag if she didn’t fall or mess up. Kerrigan’s program was stiff and boring. It was a technical performance but totally lacked artistry. I think Kerrigan‘a high scores was more from her reputation than actual performance.
@@PungiFungi I think Nancy's program was the result of one of 3 things. 1. Nancy's injuries were far worse than she led on and her coaches decided she needed a "safe" program. Now this doesn't wash with me because it was her 3rd and last shot at a gold. Isabelle Brasseur was in a similar situation in the pairs competition and had broken ribs and skated a FAR more dangerous free skate with her partner tossing her around like a potato sack. 2. Her coaches knew she didn't have a chance against Oksana regardless and ran a safe program hoping Oksana would blow it, or to put an asterisk on her performance. This is the most likely because Nancy and Tonya had been bluffing each other since the attack. 3. Nancy called an audible thinking she had it in the bag. Brian Orser made this mistake in 1988 and skated to not lose rather than skate to win. At the end of the day, I think this entire result was a perfect storm of judges being utterly fed up with the Nancy/Tonya drama as it spilled onto the ice itself. (The skate lace incident was the 3rd time Harding had pulled a stunt like this at an Olympics or worlds, as she stopped mid skate the same way in 1991 and 1993.) I think the judges were done with the gamesmanship and drama and were prepared to give the gold to ANYONE but Nancy or Tonya. What they likely didn't expect was for Oksana to steal the show like she did. Unfortunately, I think this cursed Baiul because the media and skating community put an asterisk on her performance and win because of this. I think this was one of the major causes of her self destructive behavior in the years following 1994. That and on the pro circuit Nancy was given top billing for years to come in spite of losing to Oksana not once but twice.

Ahh yes, I remember it well. In my circle of skating friends absolutely no one that I can recall ever felt sorry for Kerrigan or thought of her as anything but an over rated B$!ch. Oksana was definitely the more talented of the two and deserved to win for that performance. Fair and square, and that should have been the end of it. How ironic that Nancy couldn't contain her nastiness and showed the world her true colors.
The way Kerrigan handled her Olympic defeat says it all. The goodwill and sympathy she won after the attack came crashing down. People now see thru her fake smiles. It's how you handle victory and defeat that says the most about your character, and Nancy's were ugly !
Nancy’s a Brat. Oksana lost her parent and grandparents, and she was suffering from head injuries, and she had just won a gold medal, all of this and Oksana is only 16, but Nancy is 25 and has fortune to be supported with a family 🙄
Head injuries? I know that she had suffered a leg and back injury, due to a collision (in fact, you can see her bandaged leg, if you look closely). But, what is this about a head injury?
Kerrigan had the perfect look, the perfect smile, and a fine technique. But in addition to Baiul’s athletic talent, her ballet and dance training helped to transform her into a sensitive artist when she performed her program. Kerrigan seemed colder than the ice in the arena.
The only reason these people wanted Baiul is because they hated Nancy first. It has nothing to do with who performed the best. They make up stuff in order to justify it, but Nancy was far better than Oksana. Baiul. It is not even a close second. After watching Chen Lu on her performance, both the short and long programs, maybe the British and Canadian judges were right. Oksana should have gotten the bronze, and Chen Lu the silver.

She is not the mean girl that has been portrayed by the haters of Nancy Kerrigan. They make up so much stuff that is just not true and read bitchy into everything She says. I read it and can't figure out for my life where they get that from when she is being interviewed.. I understand now and they are gossips with nothing to do but make verbal assaults on her. That is the only reason why they think Oksana won the gold and their skating judgement is the corniest thing they have done and it is with malice and hate. They sure don't know much about ice skating. A lot of them are Tonya Harding fans and use Oksana as their main reason to justify their hatred for Nancy. I have a lot of experience with Communist judges during the Olympics and overlooking her mistakes in this one with those high technical scores is typical of them. By plenty of experience, I am talking decades. The worst was the 1972 basketball game they gave to the USSR. The team supported by their coach refused to show up at the medal ceremonies and accept the silver when they knew they won the gold. That would be humiliating. Nancy was in no position to do this.
How could they not have a copy of the Ukraine National Anthem on hand when the reigning world champion is from the Ukraine? The fact that she was second after the short also could have maybe prompted some planning ahead.
You just think when organising an international event of that scale and at such an elite level you would get a copy of the anthems for all the countries before the thing even starts, especially those who were medal contenders. It's not like she came out of nowhere to win. And even two days before when she did so well in the short they could have thought it might be a possibilty
You'd think so but this was also the first Olympic games to be held just 2 years after the previous one. An event of this scale somethings are bound to slip through the cracks.
Ukraine gaining their independence in 1991 has absolutely zero to do with Norway - the 1994 Olympic host nation - having 6 years to prepare for an event where "Have participating nations' anthems on-hand" should have been at the top of their "To-Do" checklist prior to the Opening Ceremonies. Particularly given that 1994 Olympic contenders weren't even selected until late 1993 - two full years after Ukraine had gained sovereignty.

Melissa McDowell In eastern Europe, all figure skaters and rhythmic gymnasts receive ballet training. It's required as part of the "curriculum." Japan is following in their lead too, hiring Russian coaches. You'll notice Mao Asada has ballet training. So does the Japanese guy from the 2010s (don't remember his name). Canadian pair (forgot their names but they were popular in the 2000's) hired a Russian coach because they kept losing to the Russians. The coach said they'd only work with them if they took ballet training first. It's only a novelty in the West that a figure skater would pursue additional dance training. I wonder why it's still a novelty. It's like you need math for science. You need dance training for grace in artistry. Figure skating lessons covers skating technicalities only, not arm placements and body lines. My favourite skater of all time, Sasha Cohen, started off in gymnastics. That flexibility made her untouchable once she combined it with ballet and figure skating.
But Oksana screwed up a couple of landings and didn't do but one combination jump, a very weak double double. The 5 Commie judges refused to deduct any points and scored it deliberately she could win fraudulently. Nancy ended with a spiral that was so beautiful and Oksana's spiral was like a beginner.
I remember watching this as a kid and how my family was turned off by Nancy's bad attitude and thought Oksana rightfully won that night. And then to witness her being a sourpuss while riding with Mickey Mouse in the parade. My dad would always say that there was something fake about her and was pretty candid of how much he wanted to puke every time she did that spiral move with her huge overbite.

At 25 you are on the decline in skating and the next Olympics she'd be 29 and way over the hill. Oksana was only 15 and had a couple more chances to win. it still is nasty considering the girl was a child and an orphan. Nancy just has a very cold personality. they also say if u don't win gold ur nothing . id still be thrilled with silver but to be in the history books and remembered as the best u have to win gold. to be honest in an ironic way the incident of her knee getting hit made her much more famous if not nobody woukd remember her

Nancy was a fine skater but a poor sport. Oksana beat her twice head to head - at Worlds the year before where Oksana won and Nancy bombed to 5th and at the Olympics. I remember being a young girl and waiting in line to get Nancy’s autograph at a local mall in Mass. I was next in line with my sister when she had “somewhere” else to be. She high tailed it out of there while I stood there in tears with my sister. We were told to basically scram because the meet and greet was over. After that I never liked her.

They took Michelle Kwan's place for Kerrigan to attend those Olympics. Quite naturally, nobody on team Kerrigan bothered to thank the Kwan family for their sacrifice. Over the years, I've found that people, who are empty, arrogant, shallow & meanspirited tend to support Kerrigan, no matter what. Kerrigan's story proves that personality does matter after all. Oksana was so inspiring. She added elements DURING her performance because she knew she had to in order to win. She FOUGHT for that gold. Kerrigan felt entitled to it. The right athlete won.

Oksana had the full support of the Soviet government. They give them everything they need and they don't have to work to get money for skating lessons. In a sense, they are already professionals. In 1991 The Soviet Union came apart, but she already had a head start on others. They are pampered like babies and the average citizen is understandably resentful of the special treatment they gave to their athletes.
I was referring more to emotional support/morale. Average citizens don't have to resent US athletes. Both Nancy (the girly ice princess, then the attack victim) and Tonya (the tomboy athlete from wrong side of tracks and who some believed was unfairly accused) had outpourings of support from the public and then Nancy had her family as well. After "the attack" each of them probably got more attention than they would have otherwise.

I will always know Nancy Kerrigan to be a complete bitch. 5 years after this, in 1999, I was 17 and went to get some Chinese food at a restaurant in Stoneham, Mass (where she's from) and had a run in with her. She parked her SUV next to my car as my bff and I were gathering our purses and getting ready to get out of my car, when all of a sudden she swung her car door open right into my car with a lot of force. She then just started walking towards the restaurant entrance with her family. I got out of my car and said "hey, what the hell?" That's when I noticed it was her. She gave me and my friend a dismissive look and huffed, then continued walking. It was as if my friend and I didn't exist. She couldn't care less that she could have damaged someone else's property (my car was fine). I couldn't believe it. Just say sorry, that's all. She's still waiting for an apology from Tonya Harding, well I'm still waiting for one from her. Anyway, I was young and a bit of a smart ass, so I started holding my knee and screaming "Whhhhyyy, whyyyy me!" Petty, I know. But just the level of entitlement. I can still remember watching this and being shocked at Nancy’s rude comment. And that scowl on her face as Oksana was getting the gold medal showed her true colors. I was glad Oksana won that night. She was such a beautiful skater who put so much emotion and artistry into her programs. Nancy’s program might have been more difficult technically but it was boring. Chen Lu showed such class that night. She looked appalled by Nancy’s rude remark about Oksana crying.
This vid should’ve included the playing of the anthem and raising of the flags. Nancy stood there with a thundercloud over her head as millions of viewers worldwide witnessed her obvious anger.

I remember shortly after the skandal happened one American crime show had an episode about a skater who's never skated a wholly clean program in competition in her whole career and then she got whacked on the leg in a similar fashion as Nancy, but it later turned out she herself has orchestrated the whole thing to profit from the pity that this would bring her...Unfortunately I have forgotten which show it was.

Not just that - she had collided with another skater during practice and had bruished her back as well as gotten a laceration on her shin which required stitches. There has never in history been a more overrated or undeserving winner as Oksana Baiul. Baiul is just lucky that the behind the scenes judging deal making that fraudulently gave her the gold medal was never publicly exposed as it was during the scandal in Salt Lake City in 2002

Oh, this was so long ago. But here is what I remember: at one point during a warm-up, Oksana collided with another skater. They both fell and were injured. Katarina Witt (who was my personate favorite) was the first skater to whoosh over to Oksana in a heartbeat. She showed great concern and was the first to offer help to *both* injured skaters. Other skaters rushed over as well. Other skaters except one -- Nancy Kerrigan. Nancy Kerrigan was the ONLY skater not to go see how her fellow Olympian was. She continued practicing, totally ignoring the situation.
I understand that athletes need to be focused, but it smacked of a selfishness that was unpleasant to behold. Little things can be telling.
It seems there were enough there to help, why need all of them?

At the time, Kerrigan was marketed as being this luminous goddess out on the ice, but none of us knew (until this) how tactless, classless, and undignified she actually was off the ice. Ungrateful, entitled, and much less mature than other skaters younger than her, like Chen Lu for example. So either her support system never bothered to teach her the fundamentals of how to be classy and mature off the ice, or they tried and she ignored it. So many other skaters I've watched over the years have suffered even more devastating losses on the ice, and the way they react to it when they know the cameras are on them is inspiring. This display from her is embarrassing.
Nacy was robbed from getting gold by an orphan and her story instead of talent. I would want to get the ceremony over with too.

Garland English there is more to it than just technical points. Kerrigans skating was neat, polished...she is attractive....however, she has no spirit, no fire. She was kind of dull, there was nothing about her performance that really shined.

I had the privilege of having the best seat in the house at the 1992 Campbell Soup World Tour after those Olympics. I got an autograph from Tonya Harding and Kristi Yamaguchi but snubbed from Nancy. After this and way before the attack, I realized what a prima Dona she thought she was. This just proved it. Tanya had nothing to do with the attack nor planned it. Her husband at the time and bodyguard planned it. She only knew AFTER the fact and got banned. Too afraid to tell but came forward anyway. So sad. But Oksana’s performance stole the night. Too bad that at 25 she couldn’t have been a better sportsman to a 16 year old child who was an orphan. So glad not to see her involved anymore in a sport I truly love.

Tonya was asked where Nancy Kerrigan was practicing as Shawn (her body guard) had a niece who was a fan so she drew the map of where to find her. Personally if I wanted to take out my competition, I would’ve taken out Midori Ito from Japan who was the only other woman who could land the triple axel, not Nancy.
We don’t know for sure if Tonya knew of the attack or not. I’m still 50/50

Oksana....a beautiful skater that sneer on Kerrigan's face will be around forever
I remember thinking how grateful I was that this lovely Ukrainian girl has made the tedious Harding/Kerrigan feud irrelevant.
I remember very well when Oksana won the gold; she was so young yet so talented. She became the princess of these Games. She had an incredible story and it touched everyone. Also, I didn’t realize fully then (I was 12) how important that medal was for Ukraine, as this country was still a Soviet republic only a few years before.
I never got chills from watching Nancy K. skate the way that I did when Oksana B. skated, she was just magical. Nancy clomped around the ice in a sort of mechanical, robotic, stiff way. I then got to see both of them skate live multiple times after the Olympics, and it was the same every time. Even as Oksana became a young woman, and was getting used to her new physicality, she was still a much better natural & fluid skater than Nancy. It's unfortunate that Nancy didn't have anyone around her that was telling her to work on the RBF and the public perception...and if they did, and this is still how she portrayed/carried herself, even worse.
Perfectly described - clomped. She had the stiffest arms of anyone I’ve ever seen. Whereas, Oksana to this day is known as one of the most comprehensively skilled and expressive skaters of all time - up there with Buttle, Kwan, Hanyu, Medvedeva. She uses her whole body when she skates
What a nasty piece of work, making fun of a kid. Not only a kid, but an orphan who was alone in life.
Kerrigan was, and still is a spoiled, sore loser who loves to play victim. She was so annoying on DWTS as well. Ugh. Love Oksana. And Tonya
I've seen a few excerpts of that here on YT - it was all about working herself through the bone and dancing through the pain, of which she made a big show. And I can understand that the numerous miscarriages she hads are a very bad experience for a woman to go through, but I am not sure DWTS is the place to spill the beans about it. Not to mention that it is the very treatment she submits her body to in this show (and did so before when skating) that caused this whole issue. She later admitted that she had an eating disorder at the time also - this may have messed up her body.
I wouldn't necessarily say that she is unpsortmanlike or bitchy or spoiled or anything like that; I know she comes across as such, but her issue rather seems to be how to behave appropriate in a given situation (which includes, but is not limited to, knowing when to speak and when to keep her mouth shut).. Her reactions are not spoitaneous, they're just off in some way; her problem seems to be social skills (or the lack thereof) more than anything else.

@@karengrace6890 She reminds me a bit of Heather Kuzmich from America's Next Top Model (or rather Kuzmich reminded me of her) - I've never watched that show much, but once I came across an episode and I do remember this girl. Look up her Wikipedia entry - I think Kerrigan might have the same condition, or perhaps a milder form of it.
And one thing I must say I have learned from watching Kerrigan , she plays the princess on the outside but for the reasons outlined, she comes across as having "trailer trash" manners. But Tonya Harding, for instance, always comes across as spontaneous and therefore authentic - and the movie about her makes a point of how much she wants that authenticity to be accepted, to be taken for what she is. This is also why I believe her when she says that she knew nothing about the plans for the attack, though everybody likes to cast her in the role of the witch on ice and say that she really did.

This was the first major victory AT THE OLYMPICS of a Ukrainian girl and the first performance of our anthem. My family watched this award ceremony live. When the anthem began, my husband stood up and said to our children: “Our anthem is being performed for the first time at the Olympics, please stand up.” When we lived in the USSR, we never did this when the USSR anthem was played and never stood up when we heard it on TV. This was the premiere of our century-old Ukrainian anthem, which was banned during the USSR. This is how our children were born a patriotic feeling for Ukraine.
I'm an American and I was pulling for Oksana. She was a beautiful, graceful skater. I had seen enough of the Tonya/Nancy feud!
I was SO happy for Oksana when she won GOLD! She deserved it!! We all need to learn to ignore petty cattiness. 🥇

She had 2 dumb mistakes in the short. An unbelievable flub on a double flip -- a jump she could have done wrapped in cellophane on a given day I'm sure. They weren't falls, just breaks in concentrating. Had she had it a little more together, had she had fewer media watching her practice, we could have seen this.
I woulda liked to see Tonya edge her out of the whole podium. Have Tonya land a flawless triple axel for gold , baiul win silver and chen lu beat whiny why me again pity party Nancy for the bronze. PRICELESS.

Oksana had true passion and emotion flowing through her like the Force during her performance. It gave her the edge. She won fair and square. I'm not saying she's necessarily a better skater than Nancy (of course this was 24 years ago, lol), but the gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded based on ONE performance (though I think Tonya got another chance due to a lace issue, not that it helped her any). And during that one performance, where everything came down to it, Oksana's performance won her the gold. Nancy and I'm sure many of her fans weren't happy, but face it people. Life's not fair. On another night, maybe Nancy would have had the edge. No way to know. Oksana deserved the gold that night, and after 24 years, isn't it time to accept it and move on (if you haven't already)?

Nancy skated rings around Baiul. There were 5 judges in particular that were highly suspicious. Way too suspicious but oh so obvious.
She is doing a lot better than you ever will. Lillehammer will not be finalized until the God of the Universe sets final judgement. He will judge you for your hatred of her. Agreed. The moment Oksana started her program, I knew she had it in the bag if she didn’t fall or mess up. Kerrigan’s program was stiff and boring. It was a technical performance but totally lacked artistry. I think Kerrigan‘a high scores was more from her reputation than actual performance.

1. Nancy's injuries were far worse than she led on and her coaches decided she needed a "safe" program. Now this doesn't wash with me because it was her 3rd and last shot at a gold. Isabelle Brasseur was in a similar situation in the pairs competition and had broken ribs and skated a FAR more dangerous free skate with her partner tossing her around like a potato sack.
2. Her coaches knew she didn't have a chance against Oksana regardless and ran a safe program hoping Oksana would blow it, or to put an asterisk on her performance. This is the most likely because Nancy and Tonya had been bluffing each other since the attack.
3. Nancy called an audible thinking she had it in the bag. Brian Orser made this mistake in 1988 and skated to not lose rather than skate to win.
At the end of the day, I think this entire result was a perfect storm of judges being utterly fed up with the Nancy/Tonya drama as it spilled onto the ice itself. (The skate lace incident was the 3rd time Harding had pulled a stunt like this at an Olympics or worlds, as she stopped mid skate the same way in 1991 and 1993.) I think the judges were done with the gamesmanship and drama and were prepared to give the gold to ANYONE but Nancy or Tonya. What they likely didn't expect was for Oksana to steal the show like she did. Unfortunately, I think this cursed Baiul because the media and skating community put an asterisk on her performance and win because of this. I think this was one of the major causes of her self destructive behavior in the years following 1994. That and on the pro circuit Nancy was given top billing for years to come in spite of losing to Oksana not once but twice.

Kerrigan had the perfect look, the perfect smile, and a fine technique. But in addition to Baiul’s athletic talent, her ballet and dance training helped to transform her into a sensitive artist when she performed her program. Kerrigan seemed colder than the ice in the arena.

The only reason these people wanted Baiul is because they hated Nancy first. It has nothing to do with who performed the best. They make up stuff in order to justify it, but Nancy was far better than Oksana. Baiul. It is not even a close second. After watching Chen Lu on her performance, both the short and long programs, maybe the British and Canadian judges were right. Oksana should have gotten the bronze, and Chen Lu the silver.

I have a lot of experience with Communist judges during the Olympics and overlooking her mistakes in this one with those high technical scores is typical of them. By plenty of experience, I am talking decades. The worst was the 1972 basketball game they gave to the USSR. The team supported by their coach refused to show up at the medal ceremonies and accept the silver when they knew they won the gold. That would be humiliating. Nancy was in no position to do this.
How could they not have a copy of the Ukraine National Anthem on hand when the reigning world champion is from the Ukraine? The fact that she was second after the short also could have maybe prompted some planning ahead.
You just think when organising an international event of that scale and at such an elite level you would get a copy of the anthems for all the countries before the thing even starts, especially those who were medal contenders. It's not like she came out of nowhere to win. And even two days before when she did so well in the short they could have thought it might be a possibilty
You'd think so but this was also the first Olympic games to be held just 2 years after the previous one. An event of this scale somethings are bound to slip through the cracks.
Lillehammer won the bid to host the 1994 games in 1988. They had 6 years to prepare.

Ukraine gaining their independence in 1991 has absolutely zero to do with Norway - the 1994 Olympic host nation - having 6 years to prepare for an event where "Have participating nations' anthems on-hand" should have been at the top of their "To-Do" checklist prior to the Opening Ceremonies. Particularly given that 1994 Olympic contenders weren't even selected until late 1993 - two full years after Ukraine had gained sovereignty.

It was well known that kerrigan wasn't very well liked by almost everyone in the skate community. The media just made her into a princess because it sold papers and advertising slots to do so.

In eastern Europe, all figure skaters and rhythmic gymnasts receive ballet training. It's required as part of the "curriculum."
Japan is following in their lead too, hiring Russian coaches. You'll notice Mao Asada has ballet training. So does the Japanese guy from the 2010s (don't remember his name). Canadian pair (forgot their names but they were popular in the 2000's) hired a Russian coach because they kept losing to the Russians. The coach said they'd only work with them if they took ballet training first.
It's only a novelty in the West that a figure skater would pursue additional dance training.
I wonder why it's still a novelty. It's like you need math for science. You need dance training for grace in artistry. Figure skating lessons covers skating technicalities only, not arm placements and body lines.
My favourite skater of all time, Sasha Cohen, started off in gymnastics. That flexibility made her untouchable once she combined it with ballet and figure skating.
But Oksana screwed up a couple of landings and didn't do but one combination jump, a very weak double double. The 5 Commie judges refused to deduct any points and scored it deliberately she could win fraudulently. Nancy ended with a spiral that was so beautiful and Oksana's spiral was like a beginner.

I remember watching this as a kid and how my family was turned off by Nancy's bad attitude and thought Oksana rightfully won that night. And then to witness her being a sourpuss while riding with Mickey Mouse in the parade. My dad would always say that there was something fake about her and was pretty candid of how much he wanted to puke every time she did that spiral move with her huge overbite.

wow how ungracious. the only thing I can think of is nancy knew this was her last shot to win gold at the Olympics. At 25 you are on the decline in skating and the next Olympics she'd be 29 and way over the hill. Oksana was only 15 and had a couple more chances to win. it still is nasty considering the girl was a child and an orphan. Nancy just has a very cold personality. they also say if u don't win gold ur nothing . id still be thrilled with silver but to be in the history books and remembered as the best u have to win gold. to be honest in an ironic way the incident of her knee getting hit made her much more famous if not nobody woukd remember her

Nancy was a fine skater but a poor sport. Oksana beat her twice head to head - at Worlds the year before where Oksana won and Nancy bombed to 5th and at the Olympics. Just look at the dirty look on her face as Oksana receives her medal. As an American she made her country look bad. What an embarrassment. Poor sport all the way. I'm glad she lost the gold.

I remember being a young girl and waiting in line to get Nancy’s autograph at a local mall in Mass. I was next in line with my sister when she had “somewhere” else to be. She high tailed it out of there while I stood there in tears with my sister. We were told to basically scram because the meet and greet was over. After that I never liked her.

They took Michelle Kwan's place for Kerrigan to attend those Olympics. Quite naturally, nobody on team Kerrigan bothered to thank the Kwan family for their sacrifice. Over the years, I've found that people, who are empty, arrogant, shallow & meanspirited tend to support Kerrigan, no matter what. Kerrigan's story proves that personality does matter after all. She was beautiful on the outside and ugly all over on the inside until she became too ugly to watch entirely. Wearing a pretty designer dress & expensive make up isn't enough.

Oksana was so inspiring. She added elements DURING her performance because she knew she had to in order to win. She FOUGHT for that gold. Kerrigan felt entitled to it. The right athlete won.
I believe Tonya on Nancy's behavior when they had time together away from spotlight. Nancy is so not how the media portrayed her, and they covered up for her big time.
I think because so many people put it in her mind that she was the chosen one. The one to win gold, that it went to her head and was bitter placing second. Second place in the world is nothing to be upset about. I’d be thrilled to be second best in anything.
Agree- the storyline wherein a gold medal is achieved after the attack and setbacks would've been an amazing finish, and I'm sure Nancy knew it.
Oksana 's performances were completely memorable. Truly exquisite and unforgettable. Cannot say that about Kerrigan's skate.

Very disappointed in Nancy Kerrigan's attitude. I personally believe Lu Chen was the actual winner that night, but look at how well she handled it. Nancy was upset the delay was caused by Oksana Baiul when in fact the organizers couldn't find a copy of the Ukranian national anthem.
